Seems to be a popular choice for visitors to the Paso Robles area, yet HIGHLY overrated in terms of service and experience. While the atmosphere (look of the tasting room and view) are great, expect inattentive, disengaged wine pourers and unpleasant food staff. We were given about half a swallow of wine per pour (if that) and the pourer didn't even bother to tell us about what we were tasting. "Here's the first red," for some reason left me wanting...go figure!? One of those places where pourers fail to take you seriously and brush you off the moment they lay eyes on you. Waited about 50 minutes for food from a server who seemed like she had better things to do. What a disappointment. Definitely going to pass on Grey Wolf and their (apparently) associated Tooth and Nail winery in the future. read more

Knows all the breakdowns of all the wines and their pairings. Beautiful family run winery, the tasting room is adorable and cozy, feels like grandma's house. There are tons of photos of the family, their dogs and historically lush bearded men. When you first arrive you're greeted with a lovely pooch who (its) told was left in the area and runs out to each car in hopes of finding it's family. It's a very Joe Dirtesque tale. I enjoyed the wines and perusing the grounds and the barn where 'the magic happens'. The Predator was my favorite, probably because I have a new found love for Syrahs. All the wines have fun names like Southpaw, Jackal, Big Bad Wolf, etc. and are as tasty as they are whimsical. read more

Bar like experience--not a a tasting room. THREE DIFFERENT people just poured it and walked away when you bought the tasting. No description on flavors or the grapes. They actually left us waiting for awhile at the bar and when we asked for a description of the wine her reply was "I don't know bc I don't like this one." Fantastic. They make some of my favorite Paso wines, including Trapper (tempranillo), Soulmate (syrah blend), and Tundra (petit sirah blend). I'm not a big fan of their zins or cabs, which is odd because those seem be touted as their specialties. They are a bit too on the sweet, fruitbomb side for me. The tasting room is very homey, and the dog will probably greet you on the doorstep if he isn't sleeping inside on the couch with the cat. They have a few items for sale without overdoing it...just the necessities like t-shirts and waiter's keys. The tasting room people are always extremely nice. I've been a club member for a couple of years now, and they throw a good party for us a couple of times a year. Joe is a cool guy to talk to. There are a couple of reasons I don't give them 5 stars, though, both having to do with the wine club. First, as I mentioned previously, I love about half of their wine and am not so crazy about the other half. On the times I've been able to pickup my shipment, this hasn't been an issue, because they would let me choose the bottles I wanted; but I'm not always able to do that. The other issue is the billing. I'll see a charge on my credit card without having received any notification that there is a release. One time i didn't look at my statement for a few months and finally got an email saying "Come pickup your wine! It's been here for months!" It would be nice to get some notification that there is an upcoming release, what it will consist of, and when you will be billed. I get that they're a family operation but this does bug me. Which reminds me, I just saw a charge from Grey Wolf last month which means I'll have to plan a trip up. Things could be worse! read more

This is a quaint winery out in Paso Robles. The tasting was reasonably priced and our server was friendly. The wine maker happened to be in so we got to taste 2 wines not on the tasting list which was awesome. It felt a little rushed (maybe because it was close to closing time) but other than that it was a great stop. read more

Sells wonderful wines under their Barton label. Their varietals are superb and the blends are to-die-for. Their big wine is called "The Dance" and WOW is often heard when people were tasting it. The wines are good, but their business practices indicate that they really don't care for their members or customers. As a result, both my best friends and I just withdrew our club membership, because while we all enjoyed their wines, the following chain of events disgusted us. We attended their annual dinner, and as a thank you, paid for our two guests as well. From the moment we arrived, the appetizers consisted of a stingy plate of cheese and salami, but no crackers or anything else. And there were probably about 75 guests, and just two 12" trays of cheese; one inside, the other outside. I mentioned to the server that they were out of crackers and he responded "oh, we don't have any". The wine they served was good, but the pour was about one ounce. That was a sign of things to come, because all of their pours that evening were one ounce in size. The dinner was equally stingy, with a bizarre street-taco-sized main dish of some shredded lamb over pureed cauliflower. Yuck! But here's what triggered our membership withdrawal. When we visited the winery two weeks ago, and mentioned the dinner to see if they had plans to change there was no indication that there was concern or interest in the feedback. So I wrote them an email last week, and all they gave me was "sorry you had a bad experience at the harvest dinner. We have cancelled your membership immediately". Wow! How does that sound? And this is a direct email quote from them! So no point in making suggestions or issuing a complaint. No concern or interest for their customer...especially a member-customer. So, while their wines are good, until their business practices shows some concern and care, they are off my list and I will be sure my Paso-frequenter-friends know that as well. There are MANY other fine wines in Paso, such that Greywolf/Barton really can't afford to be so arrogant. Too bad... read more

I've spent one weekend in Paso Robles. I've spent two weeks in Napa. I've spent at least a month in the Solvang/Santa Barbara country. I've gotten lost on the hot, hot Temecula highway too many times, but I'd never admit it. And yes, I know this Joe who trades. So, what do I remember of my Paso trip, on my birthday two years ago? Well, I remember that I got in a hot tub with my grandparents when they were frisky. But this is neither here nor there. Mostly, I remember how warm and inviting Grey Wolf Cellars was. As inconspicuous as it was hidden along the road out to Justin, the theoretical behemoth as far as wine travelers are concerned, it was not inconspicuous with its wines. Yes, they were quite flavorful, and if you like strong reds, well, make a point to stop; but please, don't confuse what I call a strong red with what you call a strong red. These are not $2-$15 wines. And don't read this if you are a white lover, I don't like whites. These are wines, to quote a lovely couple whom I met that day said, "that you forget about for 5 years, drink, and then scold yourself for 5 hours because you had not hidden away some more somewhere in the house." While you are there, you might be able to enjoy the dog and cat show. The cat usually just sits there, but the dog will look for some attention if you happen to be in the attention giving mood. Grey Wolf is about as charming a winery as I found in Paso - and much like movies, I prefer the indies over the biggies any day. read more

Beautiful, large, country-style tasting room with a great view of the neighboring vineyards. This was our first stop on a wine tour of the West side of Paso Robles. They are known for their Zinfandels and I fell in love with their "Predator" blend. Yummm! We took home a bottle and learned that they rarely ever use the same blend twice. So next year, the delicious Predator might taste completely different. I look forward to tasting the next vintage. read more

We found ourselves there not knowing it was a tasting weekend- and that wasn't the best experience. Liked it- didn't love it- but the wine glasses are the best and our new favorites. I'd try it again when there was a slower day- one guy was hanging out and talking like there was nobody waiting, and it left the other lady covering too many people to be able to talk with anyone. Stopped by Grey Wolf to finish out our day wine tasting for a friends birthday. When we first pulled up the place looked very inviting. Walking into the tasting room we instantly loved the place. The interior was rustic and the patio and grounds were beautiful. And of course the wine was wonderful too, so much that my friend joined their club. It was after 5pm, so the kitchen and distillery were closed. But, we will be back again (with husbands in tow) to try the food (menu looked amazing) and the tastings at the distillery. We went to the tasting room but were quite disappointed. They were completely out of everything except their Zinfandels. Attended Zinfandel Weekend and was introduced to this Wine by my family who are locals. I was blown away by the quality of this fabulous wine! We enjoyed cupcake and wine pairings!! What a yummy idea. We decided to stay for lunch and were NOT disappointed. We sat outside and enjoyed a really "cool" musical trio. I wish I could remember their name! The owner are friendly, the dog is adorable. My only regret is that I did not buy a couple more cases of the Soul Mate Rose Wine!!! read more
