I came here for Arizona Restaurant Week and it was a letdown. It was $33 for a margarita, Mexican corn, 3 tacos (barria, chicken and carnitas) and churros. It would be a good price if the food was actually good, but most of it was not. The only good parts were the margarita, which was awesome, the barria meat and churros. Even though the birria tasted fine, the meat and the tortillas were served less than warm. The chicken and carnitas tacos, the rice, and the black beans had absolutely no flavor. I finally decided to come check this place out since I saw they were running a bogo on all tacos as a cinco de mayo event. This was a really busy day but the service was good no long waits and very attentive. Like any good Mexican food restaurant it started out with some free chips and salsa and I will have to say this is probably my favorite salsa now.we decided to try a bunch of tacos like Carne Asada, Pollo Asada , Shrimp , Fish , Birria ,Al Pastor all were good and I was definitely full at the end of the night. The Barrio is a spot we like to go to often. Very authentic and fair price for some Mexican food. The service is always great there as well. I love the dia de los muertos vibe and decor in this restaurant and they even have an area where you can buy tee shirts and souvenirs. Today we tried the menudo and were very impressed with the flavor and size of the serving. I think they got the hominy just right as it was soft as opposed to other places that don't cook them all the way thru. The size of bollio bread was also a great compliment to the dish. I also ordered 2 chicken tings tacos, a fish taco and a shrimp taco. I just love their fresh artisan tortillas. The cabbage and garnishes in the tacos combined with their salsas is so good. We also had some Mexican street corn which is always great! To wash it down an ice cold Jamaica (hibiscus ice tea). I really enjoy fish tacos. However, the fish tacos at Barrio Queen are the absolute BEST that I have ever tasted!! My daughter really enjoyed her misaka & egg skillet as well. The chips are light & crispy paired with flavorful salsa. Great service and beautifully decorated inside. I don't know why I had not come here before but we will definitely be back!! We went to Barrio Queen late on a Wednesday night and the place was basically empty, so I was surprised that the service was still super slow. Our waiter was really sweet and quirky, but definitely not efficient. It took a while to get anything going, and we were sitting around a lot. We started with tableside guac, which I was excited for, especially because it came with pomegranate seeds. Unfortunately, it really missed the mark. It was bland--like it needed a serious hit of salt and some citrus to brighten it up. The queso was fine, but also tasted like it was missing something. The highlight of the appetizers was definitely the elote. For my main dish, I ordered three tacos: chicken, shrimp, and fish. The chicken was super underwhelming. No real seasoning, and the toppings didn't do much to save it. The seafood ones were definitely better - the shrimp and fish had decent flavor. But honestly, none of the tacos blew me away. The interior decor is beautiful--colorful and vibrant with lots of cool details. It definitely has the vibe down, I just wish the food and service matched it. When things change and improve I am the first to jump in and change my review, we gave Barrio Queen in Avondale another shot after 3 years and what a difference, the food and service was fantastic! The waitress was wonderful and gave suggestions when asked. She was friendly, attentive and knowledgeable. I went on Thurs at 1pm (Avondale location), to meet an "out of town" friend for lunch. The restaurant was empty except for two occupied tables. When I walked in, the woman that was also sweeping the floor, asked if I wanted a table or booth. When I opted for booth, she placed the menus at a booth, (so she doubled as a Hostess?). Meantime, I waited in the entry area for my friend, and commented to her (in surprise ) at how empty the place was. Her reply was "Yes, sometimes it's "hit or miss." I found that statement to be rather telling, and not reassuring. Needless to say, we sat at a both across from the Bar. The Bar Tender doubled as our Waiter. He was pleasant and attentive. We ordered soft drinks, Sprite for my friend, regular Lemonade. I found the Lemonade to be quite diluted. I ordered the Chile Verde combo (Rice, Refried beans, and Pork in green sauce, with Corn Tortillas) was served on a skillet. It appeared that the skillet was only used to heat the beans, and a 1/2 cup each of Rice and Meat added afterwards, because the Rice and Meat were lukewarm. The portion of Meat was VERY small, I could count the small cubes of meat in the runny sauce. The Mini Corn tortillas (in a foil pack) were rather room temperature, VERY dry, and not of good quality in comparison to other restaurants. My friend for dietary reasons, ordered ala carte Grilled Chicken, Onion, Green Bell pepper to eat over a side of Rice. The Chicken was served cubed and rather dry. The portion of Rice was also small, and the entire meal was lukewarm. We were there approx 2 hrs, and still no additional customers. I will not be returning. There are other Mexican restaurants in the area that provide better service and value! read more

Welcome to AZ Restaurant Week! Gourmet dishes at delightful prices! I visited Barrio Queen in Avondale, Arizona, during AZ Restaurant Week. They offered a four-course meal for only $33 per person, which was a great deal. All courses except for the main course only have two choices. Since this was our first dining experience at Barrio Queen, we decided to order one of each (for the 1st, 2nd, and 4th courses) so that we could taste most of what they offer on their menu. The meal started off with a flight of margaritas, with the blueberry and cucumber ones being especially good. The Casa Margarita was also tasty and refreshing. For the 2nd course, we had guacamole and cocktel de elote. The elote was another highlight, perfectly seasoned and delicious. I skipped the guacamole since I don't eat it. For the main courses, we ordered the pork chile verde, which was incredibly tender and flavorful, and the enchilada trio, which was delicious, although the red salsa was a bit too spicy for my taste. The cucumber and onion salad that came with it was a nice side dish. I didn't really enjoy the crunchy but thick chips they served. For dessert, we had both churros and flan but requested to have them to go. The food was good but the service needs to improve. Hence, the reason for giving it 3 stars. The pork chile verde we ordered initially came out incomplete, lacking rice, black beans, and corn tortillas. We had to call the server's attention, and after waiting for several minutes, the manager (I assumed) delivered the correct order. Although the manager's effort was commendable in rectifying the oversight, the wait staff should have continued checking on us, which they failed to do. Despite the slip-ups, I like how spacious the restaurant is and the large paintings hanging on the walls. It feels like you are dining in the middle of an art gallery. I visited Barrio Queen for the first time a couple days ago for lunch. It was a week day and the place wasn't packed at all so we were seated immediately. Service was good. Our waitress was friendly and checked-in multiple times. The chips are made fresh. They are good but could use a pinch of salt. The salsas were decent, although I wish their spicy salsa had more heat. For entrees I got 3 tacos and my boyfriend got the Arizona Burrito. I liked 2/3 of my tacos. The Quesabirrias was by far my favorite. The Pescado Asado was alright, the piece of fish was extremely small - they tried to make up for it by piling a heap of slaw on top. I was not a fan of the Alambre Beef. Don't think the flavors mesh well and the entire thing fell apart in the flimsy blue tortilla. My boyfriend liked his burrito. He didn't rave about it, but didn't have any complaints either. The decor inside the restaurant is really unique. Everything looks new and the place has a polished look to it. It's not the best Mexican food I've had, and I'm not rushing to come back with the variety of other Mexican restaurant options in this area - but I will come back eventually. AZ Restaurant Week #1: Barrio Queen Avondale offers a 4 course meal of $33!!! Complimentary hot chips and salsas: Mild and Habenero! Both are tasty. The Habanero has a nice smoky kick. Course 1: Margarita Flight House Margarita was so refreshing rimmed with salt. Cucumber Margarita was also a delight laced with Tajin. Berry Margarita was deep and sweet with a sugar corona. Course 2: I was going to pick the guacamole but for Restaurant Week, the guacamole is not made table side. I was not upset at all by the elite! It was served off the cob and had lovely flavored notes from sour tangy, spicy, creamy and sweet. Course 3: Enchiladas Trio I loved the black beans and cooked vegetables. I like the sauces but the enchiladas themselves were under stuffed so most of what I tasted was the lovely corn tortilla and the sauce. I should have tried the tacos. Course 3: Dessert I picked the churros without pecans but they brought me the flan instead. The flan is a little heavier than I would prefer. But different people enjoy different textures. Props to my server she was horrified to find out that I didn't get my churros. She went off to make sure that I got the dessert of my choice. The churros was amazing! Barrio Queen is a Mexican restaurant with a light "day of the dead" theme. It's fairly new, open, airy and has Mexican music playing. We were greeted immediately on arrival and seated. Chips and salsa were delivered quickly and the server took our drink order. Their chip are thicker than chips at other Mexican places and go well with their homemade salsas. Two were delivered with the chips: mild and spicy. Both are great! The spicy one has some heat without being too much. I ordered the Machaca burrito. It was ok, but quite dry. The home fries were burned. My wife loved her Gringa tacos! Our son ordered the birria tacos. These are his favorites, but, he doesn't like them as much since they no longer dip the tacos in the au jus before grilling them. Our daughter in law had the mole enchiladas and loved them! It was my first visit here looked over the menu had a variety to choose from. Went with their street tacos it says made to order with freshly made corn tortillas. Didn't meet the expectations. Carnitas flavor was good. However, the Carne Asada was dry and cold. I normally don't send food back but it was that bad. They replace him with Carnitas tacos, but that being said freshly made tortillas shouldn't be cold. It's like they've been sitting there with warm meat on top of it . Our party of 5 was promptly seated and we were given Brunch menus (it was Saturday) so many options I'm glad we all tried something different. I had the 3 tacos for $15 & added chorizo beans & rice for $6. Asada, Carnitas & Pescado tacos were excellent!! Quesa Birria Grilled cheese with Consume, OMG!! This one you have to try!! The Beef was seasoned perfectly and so tender! Couldn't finish it. My daughter got the Cinnamon Dolce Pancakes. I had to sneak a bit and they were delicious! So fluffy and yummy! By the end of our meal, ants were crawling all over the table--and on me. When we told the server, his response was basically a shrug: "The host wasn't supposed to seat anyone here, there's an ant problem." That alone is outrageous. If you know there's an active pest issue, why are you serving food at that table? We paid and asked why the manager never came over. The server said he told him. So we asked for the manager directly, and when we told him there were ants on our table and I was bitten, his response was just as careless: "We paid $400 for pest control--it's an ongoing issue." No apology. No concern. No offer to make it right. Just excuses. The manager showed zero professionalism and even less basic human decency. Not only was there a health hazard, but there was absolutely no accountability or effort to resolve the situation. He couldn't even fake an apology. This place is unsanitary, mismanaged, and clearly doesn't care about customer safety or experience. I wouldn't eat here again if the meal were free. Had to ask for salt twice, wanted cheese dip with mushrooms but got peppers instead. They need a bartender who stays behind the bar esp since the bar actually had customers. Also, the only reason we came to Bario Queen is because they are a participating restaurant in the AZ restaurant week. That said, this restaurant had a special menu for patrons participating in restaurant week. This special menu only has a couple options and it was 4 courses. You got a choice of margarita, appetizer entree, and dessert. You would pick from 4 entrees.... that's it. See my picture with their menu. I ordered the Pork Chili Verde from this menu. Perhaps the restaurant failed to tell the employees about their restaurant week menu because when they brought out my meal it looked like a bowl of soup. See picture of the bowl. I told the server immediately that wasn't what I ordered and they told me it was what I ordered. A customer should never have to argue and make a point to an employee of the restaurant. They asked why I thought it wasn't what I ordered and I pointed to the menu and said it comes with rice, beans, and tortillas....and here I'm looking at a bowl of soup. About 10 minutes later the manager comes over and sets down what I actually ordered and made it seem like it was my mistake. Acted like it was what I ordered. No, it wasn't. They treated the customer like it was the customers fault. The customer should never feel that way. I felt it ruined my date, my dinner, and my mood. Then, after all that, they basically ignored us. After no one came by for 10 minutes I had to ask someone walking by to refill my water. That was when I realized our server was no longer coming by to check on us. Why? Did we do something wrong? That's what it felt like. So the last serving was dessert and we had been waiting over 20 minutes without anyone checking on us. I sort of said out loud that no one was coming by anymore and shortly after our server came by and we asked for the check and the dessert to go. The food was under-seasoned and tastes like it was boiled. I got carne asada tacos and al pastor. The carne asada was a very light grey with no seasoning while the al pastor was a deep red despite having no flavor. The salsas were mild and mostly consisted of tomato's so I'm assuming it's to cut down on spice but ends up making it taste more like i'm eating a whole tomato with shavings of other spices. The service itself was good, I wouldn't write home about it though. Maybe I wasn't the clientele they wanted because I was skipped a couple of times for people that matched the other customers (lighter people). The inside was nice though, a bit weird to have a portrait of Michael Jackson on the ofrenda but I thought it was a bit cute. The guacamole was very good table side and their chips are definitely not your typical tortilla chips they have a little more heft to them. I decided on the California enchiladas which has Oaxaca cheese which I LOVE, red sauce, onion crema and cilantro . I added an over easy egg to the top for $1 talk about reasonable. The egg was perfectly runny and the red sauce had a nice kick to it that was about all I can say, the tortillas were so dense compared to the fillings (chicken BTW) and cheese that you were basically eating tortilla and sauce I felt ... My partner had the Baja Shrimp Burrito and he didn't read the description (his fault) when I think of a shrimp burrito I think of grilled these were battered and fried, rice cabbage, pico de gallo and aioli........his response "I like fried shrimp, I like burritos but I'm not sure I like them together"......my review is ONLY based on my meal I can't fault the place because he didn't read the menu....would I give it another shot ? It's too bad this brand has been divested of its soul as a result of franchising. We had a group of approximately 20 people for brunch which we called ahead and they should have planned for. Our waitress was essentially non-existent. When she was there she seemed extremely dissatisfied with the fact that we existed in the restaurant. And it's not like there was a ton of people in there because there was maybe a handful of tables and some people at the bar . I did watch whoever was the GM or manager sit at the bar the entire time on his laptop as our waitress disappeared for 45 min at a time. The food came out and frankly I remember visiting the original Barrio Queen. The food that they serve at this location has nothing to do with the original brand. I'm quite confident that the green enchilada sauces from a can. My chilaquiles had essentially no chicken, just a limp fried egg on top of some chips with some canned enchilada sauce. My husband's chorizo was likely frozen and I'm going to guess the eggs are made from powdered eggs. The michelada cart is cool but after you get past there's little left to write home about. I was able to order one drink in the 2 hours that we were there it was a mimosa flight and they were taste or glasses from a beer flight. There were three of them mostly juice. There were little fruit flies flying all over the place so I will assume that there are bar fruit has probably been sitting for a while. In a hour my husband and I got one round of drinks and I actually got up to go order my own drink at the bar only to think I shouldn't be that hard to order a drink. With a group of 20 you would think that they may put two waiters at our table but I guess whatever was happening on Facebook with the GM was more important then contributing or even noticing the fact that the entire group sitting right behind you was getting frustrated because we couldn't find our waitress. Today was sadly the last time I will come to this restaurant. It's a shame because the other locations are ran really well. The service wasn't great. We ordered the guacamole and we didn't get chips until the end of our meal. We asked twice for chips and refills and our server didn't come back. It wasn't until we asked a different server when we actually got our items. Last thing... the chips were stale and water..yes,the water! Tasted horrible. I was shocked, and I'm not a picky at all. The water had a moldy taste, almost as if someone had put something in it. Idk, I hate writing bad reviews but I hope something changes. I've been here two other times and each time had terrible service. I came back because I liked the food, but with the new menu change the food isn't what it was. So long Barrio Queen Avondale!
