I finally realize why I don't have and reviews for bars because I get too drunk and forget to write them. Anyway, this is not my first go around at Bar 35, but I enjoy coming here...usually for First Fridays, but especially when it's not First Friday because it's way less crowded. Because of our crappy service at Thirtynine Hotel (see review), we came here this past weekend. The beers are cheap, the choice is overwhelming and the service is great. This is probably the premiere bar in chinatown for pau hana or late night. I would definitely recommend Bar 35 and I would definitely be back. 5 stars hands down! read more

Easily the coolest place in Honolulu on a Friday night. The place is packed with a good mix of busy professionals, legal college students and other locals just looking for a good place to kick back on a friday night. The Bar is actually split into two parts - an inside lounge with tables and random seating and an outside bar that would rival any rooftop bar back East. The place serves a great selection of beer and the bartenders can make a mean martini and a decent pizza to help soak up all the fun you will be having. We got here at 9p, fairly early on a party Friday. We ordered a round of $6 Kettles and caught some prime real estate right across from the DJ booth. They have a long bar. I love long bars. In busy bars, it's most efficient because you have more surface area. Or circular bars. Come to think of it, the most efficient use of space would be a multi-tiered bar, tended by midgets. The DJ played hip-hop mished-mashed with house. I hate it when DJs slow the music to almost a halt. I feel like I'm being tested. Anyways, I always pass the test. Or maybe it's DJ code for "There's someone on the dance floor that I want to go away." The bathrooms are tidy and stalls are plentiful, but they're broken up in weird ways. Like there's a omnisex bathroom next to the men's bathroom in front, then in the back there's a ladies bathroom next to an omni? But there never seemed to be a problem with long bathroom lines, so maybe that's the ideal formula. Anyways, I got walked in on in the omnisex stall I was in. Lock doesn't function as lock, but as decoration? Girl that walked in on me, look for my ad in Missed Connections Craig's List Hawai'i. Come find me and I'll pee on you. There are private areas (I'm assuming bottle service), partitioned by cascading curtains of dogtag chains. There's also an outdoor area with satellite bar that we didn't bother with. It seems with these bars in Chinatown that offer outdoor seating, the outdoor seating fills up first. Makes sense. read more

Since I'm not a drinker, I'm reviewing their famous pizza that everyone raves about. Although they do carry my favorite lambic, Lindeman's Framboise . . . mmm, raspberry beer . . . good with pizza . . . wait, everything's good with pizza! I have no idea what kind of pizza I ate since I spent the whole night in a jet-lagged, sleep-deprived haze. I had flown back from L.A. that afternoon, went straight to work, then thought I was only having dinner with the girls. Turns out it was dinner and a pub crawl. Bar 35 was our 3rd stop. Thank goodness it wasn't our 4th, because I fell asleep at that one! The pizza (whatever it was) had a crisp, thin crust but the crust could have had more bite to it. The flavor was fine, but the pizza was so salty. I know bar food is usually on the salty side so you drink more, but the excess salt ruined the balance of the pizza. As far as pizzas go, this one was average. I think I have to go back to sample more pizza specimens, though. I like the atmosphere of Bar 35, especially the back area with the bamboo. I'll try to stay awake next time too! read more

I was still hungry after eating half the pizza though...it's real thin crust and cut into rectangles instead of slices. I usually eat 2-3 slices of a normal sized pizza, but I ate like 6 rectangles and was still hungry. Hmm...maybe it was just that the sweet bangkok pizza is sooo good. read more

Been coming here for years and it seems like it never changes, well a few changes have taken place. They recently renovated their back deck area which is much more spacious and comfortable. The pizza and french fries are the best. Make sure you try the different sauces they have for the french fries. If you dont like loud music bring some ear plugs because the music bounces off the walls and it stays pretty loud. The bartenders are super fast and efficient even when the bar is packed to the max. There is a huge selection of beers to choose from that are all imports. They have a great happy hour. read more

It was a Saturday night and my friends and I wanted a cool place that you could dance but wasn't too much like a club. My friend asked a random person where to go and they suggested Bar 35. I'm so glad my friend did that. This place was awesome. When I first walked in, noticed how big the place seemed. The bar was long, they had some tables and there was a DJ set up on a stage with some random movie playing in the background. I felt like I was in Austin or something with the setup. Then they had a patio area as well and some I guess lounge area inside near the bathroom. The bartender, George, he was amazing. The place, and I remember it, doesn't have draft beers but they have hundreds of bottled beers. So it became a game with myself and the bartender, where he would just pick out random IPAs for me to drink. Honestly, I only maybe liked one of them (Shipwrecked by Mission Brewery) but these were beers I had never heard of. Among them, Galactica by Clown Shoes and Humboldt Brown Hemp Ale. Although they weren't my particular cup of tea, I'm so glad he didn't waste my time with like a Sam Adams or something. The guy was legit. The DJ was playing some great hip hop. It would fluctuate from some older stuff like Biggie Smalls and jump back to not as old stuff like Ludacris. Overall, it was a nice mix and made you want to dance. Too bad the place just didn't have enough people in it. It was maybe around 11. Don't know when people party in Honolulu. I thought last call was 2. It'd be a shame if people just didn't like the place. There were some other people getting down as well, so it wasn't a ghost town. We also ordered some fries from the bar. They were nice and hot and hit the spot to soak up some of the double IPAs I had been drinking. Overall, loved the vibe of the place, George was an awesome bartender, and it had great music. I used to avoid this place because I'm not a huge partier, and I really hate paying a cover. Then, I realized this is the place to be NOT on Friday and Saturday! I went here yesterday with my boyfriend, and there really was not much of a crowd at all. The happy hour specials were great, and we were able to get served very quickly. The beers are like $4 and the martinis are on sale also. And the happy hour is pretty late compared to other bars...lasting until 8pm. Most places' happy hours end at 7pm or even 6pm. The waitress recommended "The Geisha," which is the most popular happy hour martini, and it was a great call....liquid deliciousness! We ordered the flatbread that has brie on it. I don't recall the name, but it was great. We also got fries with the garlic aioli, also recommended by our waitress. All in all, we had a great time yesterday. This place is a go to bar/dance place. But it depends on the night and weekend and DJ. They aren't consistent in the turn up mood, so it's always a surprise. You either get super dead and boring or super packed and turn up. We park on Nuuanu Avenue and North Beretania street, in the parking lot and just walk. It's usually hot here, since there are so many people. We usually order from the back bar because it is less crowded, sometimes. The bartender, Gretchen, has a mean resting bitch face but she's the sweetest and realest bitch there. Love her! Love when we get to listen to her playlists. So many throwbacks. read more

And fetch me a heaping basket of fries with curry mayo - deep-fried carbs do temporary wonders for endorphins. Failing that, I could turn to a $5 happy hour Belvedere martini with two olives, served with a perfect floating layer of ice shards in a ginormous glass. Or shall I revert to one of the best classic drinks ever invented, Satan's Whiskers? A powerful concoction, yes, a glass of Tanqueray and orange juice laced with sweet and dry vermouth and Grand Marnier, but so, so, so, so delicious I'd take one over a mimosa at brunch any day. Bar 35 is seriously an awesome (and sometimes strange) bar for all the facets of its eclectic vibe and decorative choices. When you walk in you think it's definitely a pizza/sports bar, a little further back you're pretty sure it's some VIP lounge in Vegas, then still further back you're outside under the stars and palm trees sitting upon zen-inducing cushions talking about whatever moment of alcoholic clarity you've discovered. But this melding of styles makes Bar 35 charming and so fun, and the best part is--they've got a HUGE dance floor. Their happy hour is amazing and on top of that, the drinks are poured well and with consistency. Not sure if this applied to the beers, but mixed drinks were $3 before 10:00. Can't get much better than that. The bartenders and servers are all so friendly and if you're lucky enough to snag a seat in the very Vegas VIP lounge, the server will be back there constantly to make sure you're getting everything you need. We ordered five pizzas (none of which I was able to taste...I'm still mourning over that) but from what I heard they were delicious, especially the Bangkok. The only minor downside is that their music is sometimes hit or miss. So if you're purely in the mood for hip hop and traditional dancey stuff, make sure you check to see if they have some "theme" going on because you might be let down. The last (and by far the MOST strange) thing about Bar 35 is that it seems to double as a venue for burlesque shows that don't get quite risque but are definitely quite PG-13. One time there was a "fashion" show where a group of women went on stage to show off some vintage lingerie. (Trust me, we walked in totally by mistake but boy was the club crowded that night). This last visit there was also a burlesque show, but only one woman performed. It was sort of a peep show, but more of a fascination to watch the audience to see what they were making of it. When downtown, Bar 35 is a must hit. Classy vibe, very "mainland" with the exposed brick and sleek furniture. Always has some funky weird videos showing while the music is pumping. This place can get prettty packed though so come early and kapu a spot if you plan on eating their delish pizzas on thin, cracker-like crust. I recommend the Sweet Bangkok or the smoked salmon. All of them were good, actually, these just seem to be my favorites. The fries are yummy too but then again, what fries aren't after a few cocktails? If you're a beer drinker, this place is your heaven. I've had some interesting fruity beers, beers I've never heard of, and some beers that I can't pronounce, but you can get your boring domestics here too. Went for happy hour on a Friday with coworkers. We sat on the back patio and enjoyed our martini specials. Waitress was slammed and tried to get all our orders and we applaud her efforts. Maybe if they had more servers we wouldn't have had to wait so long for our first round. I was not impressed with the pizza but did enjoy the fries. Relaxed atmosphere will definitely go again. Bar 35 is undoubtedly my favorite downtown bar. If you're looking for a great downtown Happy Hour, this is the place. Beer and vodka cocktail/martini specials from 4 pm - 8 pm (plus beer tasting on Wednesdays... $20 for beer sampling plus puupuus), there's a little something for almost any bar goer. The pizzas are all very tasty, crispy thin crusted affairs, best shared between 2 people ($10+ for a 6 small slice pizza). Alternatively, they've somewhat recently added crostini (6 slices of toasted bread topped with melted cheese and bits of bacon) to the menu which is also very tasty, indeed. If you're looking for a place with more of a people scene, I have to agree with Sylvia that you can always find at least a few "post-work-downtown-financial analysts that think they are much cooler than they really are". Nevertheless, there are also a number of HPU students, and other barflies who are much more interesting. Lastly, on your way in, if Frazier is at the door say hi and on weekdays, look out for Brandon at the indoor bar. On Fridays and Saturdays, head straight to the back patio and look for Eddie who can make a martini that will change your life! I finally had an evening free where I could sit back after a day of work and enjoy a drink with some friends. So, of course what better way to do just that than happy hour at Bar 35? The prices are great, $3 for martinis. They have a HUGE menu of girly drinks, which suit me just fine. I may enjoy a pink cocktail from time to time, but really I am a beer drinker at heart. They have a HUGE assortment of beers too, including my new favorite, Portland import, Rogue Dead Guy for just $3! The bar was pretty empty as it was only a Monday night. So after a while me and my small party decided to move it out back. This is where you can sit out under the trees in swanky, gray chairs that rock back and forth allowing you to bust some sweet moves in your seat. I love the ambiance and especially the selection of drinks here. I will definetly be back! read more

Second best pizza place I've visited on the island. Agostinos my more recently discovered pizza place on waiki still holding number 1 in my book. You absolutely must try the black forest ham pizza here. The super thin crunchy crust is amazing. Two rooms each with a full bar, the pizza is located in between. It's almost there taunting you every time you go from one room to the next. There's also rooms that offer a bit of privacy behind some curtains. Theres couches which make the group rooms more relaxed and lounge like. Bar 35 is one of my all time favorite places to hit up during first Friday. read more

After seeing Chelsea Clinton at Indigo, we headed around the block to Bar 35 to grab another drink before going to Aloha Tower. As you walk over, don't j-walk - we got stopped midway by the cops who were kicking it on the corner. He stopped us, we apologized and he basically said, "Do you think saying sorry is enough of a consequence? When you J-walk right infront of us, it's basically disrespecting us infront of other people." We said sorry again and didn't get written up - thank gawd. *I had no idea crossing streets with ZERO traffic or cars parked on the street, was a violation.**I Bar 35 is totally legit as it's spacious, has a huge bar, comfy couches, screens, and an outside patio with bar. The chef in the back is from Italy too, but unfortunately, we weren't hungry enough to get one of his pizzas. Great outside area in the back and bartender in the back - he provided solid service and there's great music that plays. We even came back again the same night to close out the joint. First, wow, it has been a long time since I walked the streets of Downtown Honolulu. I must say, lots of improvement with so much potential. While on my way from the parking structure on Smith Street to the Hawaii Theater for a performance later in the evening, I strolled around downtown and came upon Bar 35. I remember reading some post and threads about the place, so I had to take a look. Well, the first thing that caught my eye was the atmosphere. It is sort of like some swanky hotel lounge (aka W Hotel) with comfy sofas and mood lighting. They played some music and had a large screen with some video on the wall. The place was pretty empty, but that is because it was still in the early afternoon. The second thing that caught my eye was all the different beers on the wall. "99 bottles of beer on the wall", well, I think there was more than 99. Anyway, I had to order a Carlsberg as that was the first one that caught my eye. I wished they had a menu so that I can keep track of all the beers I drank. Maybe have a Beer Club. Well, I am a novice here so not sure if they do or don't...but one thing is sure, I will be back, and very soon! They also have a beer tasting on Wednesday! read more

Came here a few times in 2007/2008. Most of the times on First Friday. Loving the indoor/outdoor lounge areas with seperate bars. I like hanging out in the back patio... This place gets packed. free cover last I knew. Only thing with Chinatown... parking is on the street if you're lucky which is free... or park in the paid parking lot. I don't drink alcohol... but when I had the once in the blue moon "drink" with my friend who begs me to have one with her... (who loves to drink) we would get the lychee martini... and I would say "easy on the alcohol and extra sweet!" (^_^) so yah... try the lychee martini! yummy! Bar 35 is one of my favorite spots in Honolulu to go to... hang out and sip on my "almost virgin" lychee martini! I miss bar 35! good times! read more

Ever feel like the nightlife on Oahu leaves something to be desired? If so, you should check out Bar 35. It's a great space-nice leather couches (still in good condition), open spaces to walk around or stand and talk, an outdoor patio with ample space and nice, reasonably clean bathrooms. It's like a club (with less fighting and police and a much better crowd) but not as much dancing. So why the four stars? Location, location, location. While Chinatown is centrally located (and I'm sure First Friday brings in a lot of business) parking can be a pain (pay for it, walk to and from through CHINATOWN AT NIGHT). So, a word to the wise, carpool. You can split the parking fees, or, at the very least, you'll have a group to walk with. read more

Other than First Friday, I like Bar 35. Im not sure if the liquor commission has been cracking down but waiting in line outside on First Friday nights for 30 minutes doesnt seem realistic. Once in there on a First Friday night, it isnt that crowded! NOTE: Dont be like Level 4 and have this huge line outside only to have a handful of people inside. If you happen to be a beer lover or if you have a friend that is a beer lover, look no further than Bar35. They have one of the most impressive beer lists on the island, if not the best selection. They offer fantastic cocktails, good food, and a great staff that is incredibly pleasant (especially for a bar). Located in the growing nightlife district of Chinatown, its location is hard to beat for the downtown working crowd. If you aren't part of said crowd, it can be a bit of a challenge to find street parking and you might feel intimidated by the area at night. Yet, don't let that deter you, there are a plethora of municipal and private lots all within a short walking distance and if the neighborhood scares you, carpool and bring a friend! The beer selection is amazing with more than 150 beers in their arsenal. However, if beer isn't your thing, check out one of their cocktails or stick to your drink of choice. The bartenders pour good drinks that certainly will please the palate and quench your thirst. They offer a good selection pizzas and a smaller menu of bar noshes. However, the pizzas are what you come here for with a well baked crust, flavorful sauces, and great toppings. The Sweet Bangkok was a pleasant surprise with lup chuong, sweet chili sauce, cilantro and cheeses all working really well together to create a spicy, yet sweet and mild pizza that works together in a great orchestration to your palate. If Asian isn't your thing, there are a ton of other pizzas influenced by other areas like the smoked pizza with flavorful Gorgonzola cheese with smoked salmon and the French kiss which features brie cheese, pesto, and ham that all work together to become very flavorful pizzas. The New York loft feel is very industrial and comfortable for both smaller parties and large gatherings. Be sure to check out their outside patio if it is open, plus there is another bar out there. The bathrooms can be its one downfall in busier nights as they are limited. The staff are fantastic with bartenders pouring great drinks and servers constantly coming around to take orders and clear the spaces. Note, it does lack a little on busier nights such as First Friday, however if you expect stellar service on nights like that you are in for a world of disappointment. I was pleasantly surprised by the food and beer selection at this establishment. I've been here before, but not for dinner. We were just bar hopping late at night. Now that I've entered my 30s, I appreciate just sitting and eating. Tucked in the back corner of the bar is a tiny restaurant that serves outstanding food! We ordered the Winter's Bone pizza and charcuterie platter and were not disappointed. The owner served us our dishes and joyfully boasted about his cheese selections. Not long ago, he rode his bicycle from Germany to France and discovered his favorite cheese, Roquefort blue cheese, which he serves on the charcuterie platter. The Winter's Bone pizza is light and refreshing with artichoke, pears and bechamel sauce. Bar 35 also has several different happy hours. When we came on a Friday night for dinner, we enjoyed discounts on their beer selection and vodka cocktails. The pineapple plantation was outstanding. I look forward to coming here again! read more

This was a hidden treasure, surrounded by a bums and trannys. So if you've ever lived on O'ahu, you know that Hotel street is a dump. It goes through Chinatown and not always the most pleasant places to visit. Well, I gotta say that this place is worth the walk through the slums of Hawaii for! The place has a very trendy bohemian chill vibe. Theres a brick wall with a long bar, couches everywhere, live bands and another seating area in the back. We got the nuggets, fries and pizza for food and it was good. Thin crust pizza, crispy fries and juicy nuggets. My friends and I had a mini reunion, some of us reuniting after 9 years! I thought this was the perfect place to go to for this celebration. When I'm in town again, I'm going to make sure this place is on the agenda and so should you! read more

Depending on when you come this place is a hit or miss. I would advise coming on First Friday's or block party nights when its get jam packed to the point where it is uncomfortable crowded and hot. Also, people smoke back here so beware tiny dance floor with top 40 music. bouncers are pretty adamant of keeping the line for the bar and the crowd dancing separate so there's space for people to walk or employees to move around items. Away from Waikiki Beach, its a nice place to drink and do a little dancing. read more

I was worried that our last stop in Hawaii would be a bust, but after we started our trip down the Wednesday beer tasting, the servers loosened up, and Roman Holiday started playing on the projector, we were in for a fun night. It's a pretty good deal - 8 samples for $25, plus ample explanation from the resident beer gurus and free pizza samples as they come around. If you're thinking on subsisting on those free samples, I would urge you to order an entire pie for yourself and a buddy because as the crowd builds the samples are harder to come by. The pizzas are pretty decent, but not as good as the name "Valentini Gourmet Fusion Pizza" would like you to believe. Nice tavern-style crust and some thematic ingredients that place uniqueness over everything else. Which isn't to say the Sweet Bangkok's sausage, sriracha, and cilantro wasn't good, but pizza creativity is abound in 2013 without the need to attach "fusion" and "gourmet" to everything like it's 1992. read more

Woo Bar 35! I love this bar, so many memories were made here.. LOl, birthday wise! Their happy hour is awesome lasts till 8 pm, which was great when I used to work right around the corner. Great selection of alcohol, (over 100s of international beers!) Their food is awessssommmme! Although the amount of furikake fries has gone down, its still delicious. I recommend their garlic and kimchee aioli's! Their pizza's a exquisit, the Gyro is one of my favorites. But all of them are really great. The atmosphere is really chill, lights are turned down low and the music selection is great. The back area is open and outdoors, they don't have a huge selection of alcohol as they do as the inside, but still great. The bartenders are quick and friendly, also the waitresses. Never had a problem with them and George is awesome. Sometimes they have some interesting things they play on the projector, really random at times lol. But nonetheless great bar. Find either street parking, or park in one of the municipal parking structures. One of the better ones are located on South Beretania or Smith Street (Marin Tower), if you park after 5 it's $3 till 12am. read more

I was here with my husband during First Friday and it was packed by 10:00PM. At first I was a little hesitant to stay because we only saw the bar near the entrance and seems it doesn't have the look and ambience that I was expecting. Then I saw their "chill out rooms" where you can bring your group of friends and you can sit in the couch with table at the center for your drinks. I was surprised that there's a good bar downtown! I was even more surprised that they have an open air bar at the back, of course the music was very inviting (and I was ready to dance) Although it is situated at downtown, no worries because hotel street was closed and cops were there for security. I love my beer. No, not in a "chee huu green bottle" way. I like to try different styles and %'s from all around the world. I thought I died and gone to beer heaven when my friends introduced me to this place! Other than Yard House, a place where I can check off from my beer bucket list. I actually prefer the set up at Bar 35, since I'm a dork and look at the beer label/bottle (in between checking out the fine ladies in attendance of course!) The staff is pretty awesome. Most of the time I come here during First Friday when it's loud and packed like sardines. I never had an issue of them not hearing my order correctly. They also know when to include the correct glasses to go with the beers. Food here is kinda a mixed bag though, but then again the focus here is the beer. The pizza and fries were good. I'd like to apologize though for using the wooden spatula it's served on to paddle the behinds of my fine female company. Liquor was definitely flowing that night! On the other hand, the chicken nuggets were Costco bought so don't expect anything other than to fill you up. There's three areas - the main area in the front, private party rooms and the outside patio. The main area has 2 small tables at the entrance, 2 couch lounge areas and chairs at the bar. I have a pet peeve though. If you party is small (4 people), please don't hog up all the space - offer a small area to other people when it's packed. The outside area is pretty chill, but if you don't like smoke then you're outta luck. The beer selection is smaller here, but still vast. Prices are actually good. Their website has the selection and prices. Most beers are $6, which is standard import price. Then again, they are truly imports rather than the standard Heineken and Corona. You pay more for higher alcohol % and taller (like the Rogues) brews. Great happy hour prices for the drinks. Nice place to start off the night before you get smashed nearby at manifest or bar hop your way around China town. The back patio is real nice and has a separate bar there as well. Back patio seating is nice but if it does sprinkle be careful of the seats because they're generally never covered. Typically there isn't covered but busy weekends like first Friday or holidays some times has cover charge. read more

Is there such a thing as "too packed" for a bar? Bar35 on a First Friday makes me feel like a sardine. Nothing wrong with a full house, however when a extremely drunken girl (or girls) happens to start dancing right next to you, watch out. There are four possible outcomes... 1. She spills her drink all over you. 2. She drops her glass on your foot. 3. She drops on your foot. 4. All of the above. Anyhow, other than being way too crowded every time I've been there it's still a pretty cool place to hang out once in a while. I really wish they had bud light though. I'm a bud light and goose guy. I like Bar35. It has a warm, special place in my heart for reasons I can't share ;) I always end up here at the end of my night. I get their Framboise (the raspberry beer) since it's one of the only places in the city that serves it. I feel like it makes my boobs bigger somehow. Maybe not true? But alas I digress. I've had most of their food here. Their french fries sound gourmet, but really it's just some fancy salt & a pricey bill for potatoes. I'll pass thanks. i'd rather have their pizza!! Yummy! There's nothing better than splitting one amongst your very drunk friends. I like the veggie one best. I like the scene here too. Good local people having fun. While their atmosphere is really cool & their couches are comfy, if you want to socialize you'd better get off your ass. I love their beaded area, but again- it screams anti-social. i've had great, amazing nights here & others a total bust so it all depends on the people that you go with. read more
