I haven't made up my mind about Honolulu's Chinatown in the evening. On one hand, the area has a cool, edgy vibe that attracts the hipsters to the stylish clubs, restaurants, and art galleries in the area. On the other, that same edginess exposes the unsavory activities you would expect in an area overtaken by homelessness. Tread carefully. Into this fold is this very chill bar with a large bar and a stage for live music. Stopped in at one of our go-to bars in Honolulu, bar 35. This is One of those places we kind of hate to brag about because we don't want it to get too popular so we don't have a seat at the bar anymore Gretchen is the perfect bartender, nice to chat it up with, and keeps an eye on your drink. We're always lucky to have her there when we stop in for a visit. The bar itself is fairly large with the small outdoor area in the back. Lots of nooks and crannies if you want to kind of be by yourself. Good happy hour menu and the beer selection although 95% of it is canned or bottled, is fantastic. Parking in the area with super easy, and if you park close to 6:00 p.m. you don't have to pay after 6:00 p.m. so your meter charge will be very negligible. We use the app to make the payment on the meter and it was super simple. read more

This place used to be at the top of my list. It still is, but after my last couple of visits, it's now sadly at the top of my Do Not Recommend list. Roll back the clock 10 years and this place was king! It was the place to go for pau hana and also late night shenanigans. I've had many good nights at Bar35 and remember it often having a long line to get it. Fast forward to 2024 and I feel it has achieved true dive bar status. This is very sad. I'm disappointed to see this and will not be back. I really don't know what went wrong here? Is it COVID that ruined them? Is it the lack of motivated staff, a problem that seems to be plaguing the service industry work force everywhere. Worst customer service ever. I presented my Drivers License and the door guard kept it asking for another ID. When I asked why he said there was something odd. He then got incredibly aggressive with other patrons saying that we were too close to his butt and he had a hundred things going on right now. Eventually his boss came and said there was no issue with my state issued drivers license. I will never visit this place again with this person working security. Pure incompetence. read more

Gretchen and staff certainly make this place a fun and happy place to enjoy a martini/beer/shot! There is air conditioned indoor seating and natural air patio seating in the back. The interior corner seating areas has been revamped and the patio furniture and decorations has been updated. There is Happy Hour, but even at regular price, their drinks are reasonable. They have original martini concoctions on their menu to try. My personalized custom fave is a not-so-sweet lychee martini. Cheers! read more

I can't tell you how many times I've been to Bar 35 and somehow it's escaped a review. I love this place and am glad to see it survived the pandemic relatively unchanged (if not better). Located in Chinatown on Hotel Street, it's a great stop on a pub crawl or exploration of the area. The bright sign beckons you in; friendly bouncers and staff are welcoming to sit down and stay a while. The inside is exposed brick, high ceilings, and is kept dark to enjoy the ambience and fun conversation with friends. I love these old buildings and how they've been repurposed for a modern crown. The main room has a long bar along the left wall with various seating arrangements on the left. At the back right are private booth areas for groups, I assume they take reservations for these for parties. Beyond that are numerous restrooms (most reserved for those identifying as women), then the kitchen and walkway to the best part - the outdoor seating area. Under the stars of Honolulu, you can enjoy the fresh night air in large shared couch areas, plus smaller two-seaters, standing room, and the outdoor bar top. They have a huge selection of beers; you can order anything you'd like indoor or outdoor. Plus mixed drinks and wine, there's something for everyone. On a recent visit before a show at the nearby Hawaii Theatre, we arrived in time for happy hour, which was even more reasonable then the regular prices (I feel this is the kind of place that wants you to stay and relax a while). Once upon a time when I worked in the financial district of Downtown Honolulu, my colleagues and I would go to the Chinatown area for happy hour (HH) and First Fridays. Those were the good old days where you'd hang out with your office mates winding down with adult happy juice. We'd usually patronize our favorite spots where Bar 35 was one of them. Located near the corner Smith Street and N Hotel Street makai side, Bar 35 has been in business since 2006 offering craft beers, cocktails, flatbread pizzas, sandwiches, and an array of appetizers. Recently, a, a friend suggested coming here for HH. I was off that evening and had been swamped at work so this was a great idea to wind down with some friends. Upon entry, you are carded immediately so have your ID ready. It was just before 5pm and still early, so we selected our seats. After studying the menu, I decided to get the Gyromatic Pizza and a Cucumber Cooler to wash it down. One of my friends came to Bar 35 just to document their outdoor patio with a bar adjacent to it. Above, they have a cool arrangement of colorful umbrellas. Inside, they also have multiple private rooms. We were advised their kitchen starts from 5pm so we used the waiting time sipping on our drinks and catching up. The next thing we know, our flatbread pizzas were delivered to our table. I was able to sample the Smokey Heaven (smoked salmon, cream cheese and capers), French Kiss (French brie, pesto and ham), Veggielicious (zucchini, olives and mushrooms) and the Gyromatic (lamb and beef Gyro meat, and tzatziki sauce). They were all good but clearly my favorite was what I selected, the Gyromatic. I'd order this again. I got the Cucumber Cooler (Smirnoff cucumber lime vodka, homemade sweet & sour and soda water) and just enjoyed it. This gave me a slight buzz where I found myself ordering another one as we had a designated driver that evening. Service was pretty good that evening. Our waitress was friendly but borderline rude. I was trying to take a photo where she intentionally stuck her body part into my photo, not once but twice. She may have been joking but this wasn't received well by me. This was shortly after we entered, and I sure wasn't going to make a scene so I let it go. Overall, a decent time having HH with some friends and I wouldn't hesitate to come back again. I haven't been to a club ish bar in such a while, but it was my first time here. I like how at a certain time, a dj got set up, and music started bumpin. The dance floor got filled up pretty quickly and it got packed. There was no entrance fee the night we came, and they had some pupus and drinks to order. Seating was very limited in the main entrance area due to it being turned into a dance floor, but there were private areas available and an outdoor area. I came here during their happy hour. Their food happy hour is Monday through Friday 5-6pm (1st Fridays not included) and Saturday 7-8pm which includes 25% off any 2 regular pizzas and 25% edamame & euro fries. Their drink happy hour is all night Monday, Tuesday through Friday 4-9pm, 1st Friday 4-8pm, and Saturdays 6-10pm and includes $3.75 Three Olives cocktails, $5 Hangar 1 martinis, $2 off $5-$7.50 bottled beers, and $3 off draft beers. This was one of the few bars that were still open (something about a global pandemic...) so I didn't really have a choice but to stop in here. Luckily it was during their happy hour! For drinks I ordered the cucumber cooler ($7.50 during HH) which was a refreshing drink with lots and lots of cucumber flavors. If that sounds like your kind of drink this is a good one for you. My second drink was the berry Asian ($7.50 during HH) which was definitely on the sweeter side and had a lot of sweet flavors. For food because of their 25% discount of 2 pizzas I ordered the sweet Bangkok and the deep forest pizzas. The sweet Bangkok pizza was something I've never had before! It has Chinese sausage (or lap cheung) on top and it's a pizza with a sweeter flavor profile but it is still really good. The deep forest was also good but I preferred the sweet Bangkok more. I was already pretty tipsy even before coming here and all I can remember is devouring these two pizzas like it was nobody's business. I also liked that the pizzas were thin crust! Overall this was a pretty good happy hour spot with good deals on food and drinks if you can navigate through all the special happy hour times. It was our first time in Oahu and it was cinco de mayo, so naturally we had to have a fun night out and Bar 35 did not disappoint. Drinks- We were in Chinatown for a block party and wanted to get some drinks at a bar nearby. It was 7PM on a Friday, so thought it'd be a long shot to find a place that still has happy hour but there it was- Bar 35 has HH until 8! Food wasn't on HH anymore; I believe it ended at 6:30. But at $4.50 for a specialty cocktail, we were not concerned with the prices of anything else. Yes, you read that right, $4.50!!! And they don't skimp you on the alcohol either. We tried the berry asian, pineapple plantation, miss Chinatown, cucumber cooler, and lychee martini - basically almost the entire HH drink menu - and all were delicious! The lychee in the martini tasted so refreshing too. Food- We only tried one dish since we were going to dinner soon, but it was very tasty. It was some kind of pork belly pieces on a stick that were nicely charred and sweet, paired very well with our cocktails! Ambiance- We walked in while daytime light was still out, but as we entered Bar 35, it was like we were taken to an entirely different place... like a Miami club at 3AM. The first portion of the bar was only about 20% full at this point, but the way the DJ was bumpin the early 2000s hits, the energy felt at capacity. It seemed like most of the patrons at this point were locals. There was one girl celebrating her 25th birthday, and she kindly came around giving everyone candies as treats. At some point, when the bar filled up a bit more, the DJ announced a special surprise for the birthday girl, which was a lap dance from who I think was her boyfriend, or at least I hope so! I personally don't know of any bars in LA that would have a birthday lap dance going off for a patron at 8PM on a Friday night, so this was quite the show for us. And how could I forget the very instagrammable neon bar sign and cool paintings! My review is about the food only. They make a very delicious pizza called Sweet Bangkok and no other place on Oahu has something like that. They put lup cheong on top of a cheese pizza with cilantro and drizzle sweet chili sauce over it. The pizza is more on the savory side and you get a small kick from the chili sauce. When you order pizza during happy hour, you can get 25% off on any 2 regular sized pizzas. Their pizzas are $19 each. They're cut in small rectangles so it's great for sharing. The Deep Forest is also good, it has prosciutto and mushrooms drizzled with olive oil. The euro fries and chicken nuggets are also tasty but the portions are small so you might want to double up on those appetizers if you here with a group. The inside of this place is dark and the leather couches are worn in. They have a small outdoor seating area where you can use for company parties. It's nice outside but once the sun sets, it's hard to see since they don't have too many lights up. Happy hour is Monday to Friday from 5-6pm and Saturday from 7-8pm. We came here after the fireworks cruise. We didn't realize how tired we were lol. There is security in from which is nice. The inside was nice with a huge bar in front, a stage with a dj, and amazing lighting. There is also a bar in the back which is in a small outside patio area. Very nice and come great group sweating outside. We didn't have any food but my wife had the Mexican lollipop which was great. I had a whiskey sour. We didn't stay long because I had a headache but the bar tender on the patio (lady of orientalist descent) was so amazing. She was really concerned about how we felt, she talked to us like buds, and she recommended places for us to go and things to try outside of the bar. Great pizzas and Happy Hour! I was a bit hesitant to go here because it's in a questionable part of Chinatown... you know... Hotel Street... However, the interior, the ambiance, and our server, Mandy, made my first visit a pleasant one! When I walked in, I selected a corner with comfy sofas. She checked up on us, cleaned away the used dishes, and said, "See you next time" as we left. Wow... she was so professional and cheerful! My friends got the beer flights (four varieties) and Sheryl gave me the glass of cider - I liked the slight fruitiness with a tart theme. I got a Blue Coconuts (coconut Vodka, pineapple juice, Lemon juice, and alize bleu float) and a Chocolate Moustache (vanilla Vodka, Bailey's Irish cream, and creme de cocoa) which was my favorite. Dan also ordered the Happy Hour pizzas (ends at 6pm). The veggie pizza had a slight kick in the sauce. The Gyromatic (lamb pizza) was yummy with the tzatziki sauce! AMBIANCE: Parking: Street parking and also some lot parking as well. Most are free after a certain time. There are good eateries, bars, and everyday errand shops. The space itself is pretty spacious but it's no hidden gem. It can get pretty popping easily. The DJ was awesome the ambiance was vibin. In the outside bar, is pretty dim but not that dark. I enjoyed the hip-hop vibes and it was a space where to chop it up. FOOD & DRINKS: Gyro Pizza (Recommend) Pretty good. Reasonable portion. It's moreover a thin pan pizza then you're conventional heavy round slices. Good for two people. French Fries (Recommend) Surprisingly wealthy portion. String fries that was pretty crispy. Good beer selection, non-draft that it's. I think like 5 taps for the draft selection. They've got Kroenenburg 1664 which is hella nostalgic for me because we used to drink that with the British Army in the desert so that was a pleasant surprise to come across. Decent pricing for the beers. We've visited a few times now and the draft menu seems to rotate a steady variety of beers. Food here is better than expected especially for bar food. The lumpia is good. The wings are good too. Ordered twice baked. Pizza is nice too. Really thin crispy crust and it all had good flavor. There's a couple tables and a decent length bar. There's another bar in the rear that's outdoors work seating and another area indoors for seating with more tables. Service is good but when it gets busy the servers are not set up to handle the work load causing waits to build up but I guess it is expected all considering. Aside from that they are very friendly and helpful. If you're trying to come on the weekend get there early because not only will you hit a cover charge after a certain hour but you will also find yourself standing and not at a table. They've got a DJ that starts at like 9 and typically plays a variety of music trying to please the whole crowd. Lots of dancing and drunken drink spilling going on on the dance floor area. The men's bathroom is useable and I don't recall the wife complaining about the women's one, so must be acceptable as well. Parking is strictly street and paid city parking lots so be prepared for that. You may be hunting for a spot for a hot minute if you get to town too late. There are a bunch of bars and eateries all around this area so it's usually pretty poppin' especially on Friday night and the weekends but we tend too have a good time and might out when we come here. read more

First time trying their pizza and it was very tasty! We had a large group so shared 6 different pizzas. Pipping hot, very thin crust, bursting with flavor. Nice bites to keep your stomach happy which drinking so you last longer. There were some other guest that would occasionally smoke a cigarette in the vicinity and would blow towards us. This is definitely the best bar to go to for a night out especially compared to manifest which is always WAY too packed. I have also had some fries from here and it was really good. Bar 35 is located smack dab center of Chinatown on Hotel Street. Hipster décor; 70's music, great adult beverage pricing for Happy Hour and a nice appetizer menu. A couple things to remember: 1) Happy Hour food menu ends at 6 pm. After 6 pm, you will be charged the regular price. Happy Hour drink prices end at 7 pm 2) Tuesdays is $25 wine and pizza night or beer and pizza night. You get a full bottle of wine or a 60 oz pitcher of beer with your pizza 3) Thursday is their martini special night 4) They have a private room and a private patio so depending on the size of you entourage; you may want to reserve either the private room or patio 5) Friendly staff Nuff said! Read a good review about a cool bar that has a smoking patio, so I think it's great because I smoke cigars, so I call to make sure it's a smoking patio, and I'm told yes. So I show up, wait in line, get to the front bouncer, ask me what's in my humidor, I show him he says cool pay the cover go inside get my drink and light up my cigar. Waitresses come over and say no smoking. I said I called and asked if it was a smoking patio and told yes, and the bouncer confirmed it was, then she says very rudely, the bouncer dosen't know the bar rules (it's it their job to know the bar rules) and we only allow (nasty) cigarettes or vaping not cigars. I say I'm going to finish my drink and go, but your bar is going to get a bad review for me. I can't believe this day and time that people are still discriminating against peoples choices. I love love love this place! It's one of the nicer air conditioned bar in China town! They normally have a live dj on Fridays and their happy hour is the best! My friend ordered the flight of beer with was ok, their selection this month wasa bit light but regardless they have so much selection when it comes to beer it's not even funny!!!! This is Bar 35? Geez, it's been a while since I last stepped foot into this place. Maybe 2 or 3 years? But even before that, things were a lot different. I remember it being more of a club rather than the bar/lounge type of place that it is now. Like there used to be an open area for dancing and among the crowd there would be go-go dancers gyrating and moving their junk around! LOL! Auriiite! But that's another story. Hehehe ;) So with the above said, I was a little thrown off when one of my friends said she really wanted to come here for Happy Hour. You do?! Shoots! We go! :D Well apparently, not only has Bar 35 changed over the years, but they also have some pretty good Happy Hour drink specials. Oh, AND their flatbread pizzas are one of their winning grinds! Only I wouldn't know about the pizzas because I got there late due to that humbug thing called, work. But I saw a lot of pictures on Yelp and my friends did confirm that those pizzas were hella good! I guess no sweat about the pizzas for now because I'll probably go back for that soon. But since beer makes everything better, I got a beer flight for 7 bucks! The inside area's atmosphere has a club vibe - the music, lighting, etc. The outside area is the place that I liked. It's a chill atmosphere and it felt nice drinking while feeling the breeze. I had two cocktails: Berry Asian & Cucumber Cooler The Berry Asian came with Lychee which was sweet and delicious. The Cucumber Cooler was refreshing and perfect for the hot season. We needed to order one food with our drinks so we had the Spicy Edamame which was a flavorful finger food. We didn't order anything else since we came here for just drinks after having dinner but would love to try their other menus next time. read more

Ambiance is loud and crazy. Fun place to be. Two different bars you can chill at... one inside with a dance floor and a long bar then one in the back with outdoor comfy couches. I tried the mozzarella basil pizza which was AMAZINg! It was a little on the smaller side (plus a thin crust)so I'd share with only 2 hungry people or 4 not so hungry people. Great for small corporate gatherings! My company organized a client pau hana on a Thursday, and the staff and management were terrific to work with - very gracious and accommodating to our requests. Pricing for their in-house catering was reasonable, and the food was great - they provided a great selection of finger foods such as flatbreads, lumpia, charcuterie, edamame, etc. Although the gathering was set for their outdoor patio space, they allowed to spend the first hour inside (they opened at 4 pm), which was welcome given the August heat. The patio was warm for some, fine for others. One last tip for event planners - might want to ask about plates as they indicated they don't regularly carry them, instead offering napkins for the finger foods. They were able to find some styrofoam plates for our party, though, so it all worked out. Our client was pleased with the venue and indicated he'd like to do another one here again! read more
