Nanxing soup dumplings: one broke, but rest were good!
    Kelly Y.

4.5 stars! Atlanta has many options in Chinese dining, but I was looking for something that is more accessible to 2 people instead of a group of 4+, where the portions are too big for us. Bao Gogo fits this category. The interior is bright, clean, and casual. Parties of 1 to 6 can feel right at home here. Their portions are perfect for 2 to 4 sharing. Their soup buns are probably made in house since they had a 20min wait time. They were tasty and soupy. Although one did break. We loved the fried wontons' thin crispy skin and slightly spicy coating. The star of the evening was the intestines stirfry w jalapeños. There was no funk at all!! #iykyk The intestines were perfectly chewy and tasty. I polished off the whole thing. Service was friendly and efficient. We would gladly return when we're in Atlanta again!

General Tsos Chicken ... PLEASE de-feather the d*mn chicken. It looked so good and the sauce was amazing but the texture was AWFUL.

I swear, some Chinese restaurants have given me trust issues with the quality of chicken they serve. I'm aware that many restaurants are trying to squeeze everything that they can out of a dollar these days, but WHYYYYY did Bao Gogo bread up pieces of chicken with the feathers still attached, deep fry it, then serve it to the customer in a sauce? The sauce was very good, by the way. BUT the customer (ME) doesn't want to be pulling hard ass feathers out of their mouth when trying to enjoy a meal where they presumably paid for the meat of the CHICKEN, not feathers. It's a horrible business practice and oversight in my opinion. Just say you guys don't de-feather the meat on the menu so that we have the choice to battle through bones when eating. The dumplings and buns were so good. I want to rate this restaurant higher purely for that reason. I'd probably only come back for those alone. Service was good enough for a takeout order. I still cannot get over pulling fried feathers out of my mouth... I don't want to sound ignorant or culturally insensitive at all because maybe eating the whole chicken is okay? Somebody message me if I'm wrong! I love General Tso's chicken. But the feathers.... UGH. Hai in Decatur wouldn't do this to me.

    Hot & Sour Soup

I love spicy / Szechuan Chinese food so was very excited when Bao Gogo opened up. I finally had the chance to try it today for lunch and I had higher hopes. The crackers with the soup tasted stale, and the fish dish had a strange plasticy flavor. Maybe they were having an off day - I'd give them one more try before writing them off. The server was very attentive - almost too much. But I like an attentive server more than an absentee server. And the restaurant was bright and clean.

I visited for lunch and took my food to go. Was craving hot and sour soup, but noticed they had some great $11 lunch specials so decided to take advantage of that. The inside is pristine, it must have just recently opened because everything is clean and bright. The woman who took my order was friendly, and when I asked a couple questions she wasn't sure about, she went to the back to get clarification, which I really appreciated. I got the Szechuan Chili Chicken lunch special and a hot and sour soup. The chicken was spicy and tasty, but a little bit more oil than I'd prefer. It came with a large portion of white rice. The hot and sour soup hit the spot, it was the perfect blend of tangy and spicy. It had a great amount of tofu, mushrooms, and bamboo shoots, which I love. The leftovers reheated well, also.

    2. Grandmas Noodles I'm not sure who Grandma is, but she can sure cook.

This location is a newly opened branch of the Alpharetta restaurant and boy, is it ever good! The menu is a short but sweet mix of traditional Chinese cuisine and Chinese-American favorites. We ordered chongqing chicken, Xiao long bao, dry-fried string beans, and Grandma's noodles. From its Buckhead strip mall location and simple decor you might be inclined to underestimate the food but that would be a mistake. The chicken was boneless, possible an accommodation to the anticipated Western customers, and had a wetter sauce than what I'm used to but it had plenty of Sichuan peppercorn and was really rocking the ma la. Very delicious. The XLB may be the best I've had yet in Atlanta. They were plump, juicy, and tasty, 5 to an order. And in a smart move the dumplings are served with a small bowl to catch the soup that may spill from your spoon. I'm a confirmed string bean hater. I believe they should not be allowed to exist. I reluctantly tasted one of the dry-fried string beans. I won't say it was life changing ('cuz it wasn't) but it was damn good. I definitely would eat this again. And as far as Grandma's noodles go, I have no idea who Grandma is but she sure can cook. The noodles are hand pulled and are unfortunately the only dish on the menu to feature hand pulled noodles. The light, clear sauce also features a distinct smack of Sichuan peppercorn, along with scallion and garlic. The prices are good for the area and they offer a weekday lunch special for $11. The staff is extremely friendly and very eager to help with the menu and to offer suggestions if needed. They genuinely want you to love their food and it shows. Absolutely worth stopping in for a snack or full meal.

Our first visit, nice & straightforward clean inside, with attentive, kind service. Chinese music was a nice appropriate touch. Fair prices & portions. Dan Dan Noodles & Fried Eggplant with sweet & sour garlic sauce were eaten, & liked. Will be back to try more!

Great new spot for chinese food! The restaurant is really cute and the service is good. The food is phenomenal!! We'll definitely be back. We had the pork soup dumplings, general tsos chicken, and hunan chicken-- all stellar!

New dimsum place in Buckhead. Best Chinese food in the area. The grandma noodles was the standout. But the fried tofu and mayo tofu was exceptional. The spice level was adjusted to our likeness. Service was great!!!

Kung pao tofu, broccoli tofu, fried dry mushrooms!
    Pam M.

Fresh, clean, delicious! The food was not pricy but so very good. We literally v loved everything! Spring rolls--veggie and supper crisp. Obviously just made fresh. Dry fried mushrooms have good spices and were not at all greasy. My husband got tofu broccoli and fried rice. I got kung pao tofu. Right spice level and so freshly made. ( many organs can be ordered with chicken, beef or tofu. Why don't everyone do that?) We just loved it all. The owner and staff are super friendly. This is close to our house and it's our new favorite. Some Chinese can be oily and glunky . But not here! Try it!! We're coming back.

Spicy food was spicy. Dried fried eggplant was great. Crispy and hot. Egg rolls were a bit thin so not much inside. Hunan chicken was the best. Very flavorful. Had a spicy Szechuan chicken which was really spicy and they were kind enough to make it over. Still good. Server came by several times to see if we needed anything like refills in the drink. Restaurant and bathrooms were clean. I will be back

Great spot, very nice environment, amazing food and great service. Very recommended!!!

The Canton House on Buford Highway is my family's go-to for authentic Cantonese dim sum in Atlanta…read more The food is always up to expectations each and every visit. Having been at least once every couple months for years, it's our Chinese comfort food as dim sum is meant to be. Although I would recommend arriving at anytime they are open, we find the absolute best time for dim sum is to arrive right at opening on Saturday or Sunday. This time lets us beat the wait, get a great table fast, and the food is super plentiful, hot and fresh out of the kitchen. The chrysanthemum tea is a must have and complements the food as a perfect, tasty, and just sweet enough palate cleanser (although I would prefer to add the rock sugar myself to my tea, they serve it with sugar already inside the pot). For the absolute best pairing with your chrysanthemum tea, make sure to save room for the awesome pineapple buns while supplies last. They were out today and we all collectively cried (will be going back just for the pineapple buns soon...we are just not complete without them!). We love all the dishes, but our absolute favorites (outside of the pineapple buns) are the pork spare ribs with black bean, the beef rice rolls/noodles, shrimp dumplings, and turnip cakes. Add some spicy sauce to the spare ribs and turnip cakes to really set them off! For iced coffee lovers who like it really strong, don't pass up on the iced coffee. It has legs that are strong enough to walk, but completely complements the dim sum with a little extra boost to help you enjoy the day. So, I challenge others to find a better dim sum place in Atlanta. That is why Canton House earns my 5th star and looking forward to getting my pineapple buns (really) soon!

We started with the flower tea, amazing choice! Sweet and warming, nicely aromatic. Perfect start. Then the dim sum carts rolled in and we chowed down. DISHES I ORDERED - Siu Mai: Not the best I've had. Quite oily on the outside, but the flavor isn't bad. It does...taste like siu mai. It's just nothing spectacular - Chinese Broccoli: A classic! Very good - Beef Chow Fun: A very chewy and bouncy home made flat noodle dish. Savory, salty, and flavorful! Good amount of tender beef too. - Shrimp Balls: Crispy and fried on the outside, yummy, with good big shrimp ball. Yummy classic sweet and sour sauce too. Delicious - Egg Rolls: Good, not too oily, a normal egg roll - Spare ribs: Possibly my favorite dish! Tender, not too chewy, good savory sweet flavor. -- Overall, it's not bad but it's nothing to write home about. My favorite item was probably the spare ribs. The rest were standard in my opinion. However, service is fast since it is dimsum, so perfect to eat when hungry! Also great ambiance for big group parties or hangouts!

There are some differences to how menu items are made/taste from when I first had it, so I feel as though the chef has most likely changed. It's both good and bad because the menu items with taro aren't quite as nice as before, but other things are either the same or better like the Beef Ho Fun for example. The chicken feet have changed too, but both were good. All the classic items are still basically the same. I liked the pan fried chives dumplings and beef cheung fun here. I can't speak for dinner or how it is on the weekdays, but it's quite busy over the weekends, which is expected for dim sum. It's a large space too, but once it's busy, you'll have to take a number and wait for a table. There's some seating along the side of the entrance to wait, but it may still take awhile. Usually, only one person really has to go and take a number, so if possible, one person should strive to get there earlier.

Royal China - Disappointing Experience…read more We have been coming to Royal China every year as part of our Christmas tradition, and we've always loved their Peking duck. Unfortunately, this year's experience was extremely disappointing. The service was terrible. We waited 40 minutes just to get our drinks, and after placing our food order, we waited another hour and a half with no food arriving. We were repeatedly told that the food was "coming soon," but nothing came. For reference, we ordered very simple dishes -- green beans, cauliflower, and eggplant -- items that should not take over an hour to prepare. Eventually, the duck arrived after an hour and a half, but none of the side dishes came with it. We had to speak to the manager three separate times, and the staff was rude and dismissive throughout the experience. The restaurant is very authentic, and we were clearly in the minority as guests, but that should never justify such poor service. Sadly, our five-year tradition of spending Christmas here was completely ruined. If you decide to visit this restaurant, be aware that the service can be extremely disappointing.

Admittedly this location is in need of a DEEP clean and a major facelift. It's like stepping into a vintage time capsule. But hey, at least there's yummy food inside. Considering that, the prices do not really match the ambience at all in my opinion. However it seems they might have a big staff to support, especially those who make their dumplings and noodles from scratch. I'll pay a lil extra at a takeout spot for the food quality because it's certainly there. The staff has been pleasant enough, which is a nice plus. The pork buns are a great mouthful (I prefer steamed). Same for the soup dumplings. Unmatched in the texture of the dough. I've tried their hand-pulled noodles in a soup as well as a stir-fry and they certainly held their own. The noodle consistency is incredibly dreamy, so much so it has become a craving in my household. I don't like the beef they use as it can be a bit dry but the flavor is really nice. Nothing has been salty so far and the flavor profile is always robust. Numbing spice on deck. Again, the food is a hit. Where this place falls short is appearance and service. It just feels stuck in another century, and not in an endearing way. I ate here once, saw the condition of the restaurant and the health score, and settled on the blissful ignorance of takeout from thereon. The parking lot is rough and an eyesore. Yes, we call it a "hole in the wall" -- it's literally in the basement of an optician and not the flashiest place you'll ever see. But don't judge a book by its cover. The quality of the food is far beyond what the exterior suggests. This is our one and only go-to spot when we need a true Chinese food fix in Atlanta. Simple, no-frills, and all about the food. It's not trendy or polished -- and that's part of the charm. You're here for authentic, bold flavors, not fancy decor. Service is pretty solid, even with the occasional language barrier or when the person hand-making dumplings steps away for a break. Even during peak busy times on previous visits, they've handled things well. One thing we learned the hard way: don't ask them to modify dishes. On a past visit, we asked for a change and they refused to preserve authenticity -- and honestly, I respect that 100% now. Lesson learned: trust the chef and learn to handle the spice! This place is all about explosive, authentic flavors. Our usual star is the Spicy Griddle Cooked Fish Fillet with potato chips, carrot chips, lotus root, and purple yam. It's a full-on flavor bomb -- numbing Sichuan peppercorn heat, bold spice, and perfect for sharing. Absolute showstopper. The Twice Cooked Pork Belly with Cabbage is my new favorite -- juicy, succulent pork paired with crunchy cabbage and an incredible sauce. Just phenomenal. The Black Pepper Beef was flavorful, though this time it leaned a bit heavy on green peppers and lighter on the beef. Still tasty, just slightly unbalanced. The Egg Fried Rice complemented everything beautifully -- and best of all, it wasn't oily. And the Lamb & Zucchini Dumplings? Worth every minute of the wait. Handmade and packed with flavor -- another absolute winner. We can't wait to go back. This is the kind of place you proudly take out-of-town guests -- they'll be blown away and talking about it the rest of their trip. Northern China Eatery never disappoints.

The eggplant with garlic came with a bright red sauce that had no garlic in it. When I mentioned to the waiter that it was the wrong sauce, she said "No, that is spicy garlic sauce." I have had that dish at this restaurant at least five times and more than 20 times elsewhere. It was the wrong sauce and the sauce wasn't good. She and another waiter spoke to the kitchen and later apologized. Assessment: I think ownership changed and they took their cooks with them. Instead of the lite, complex flavors of Cantonese food of which they were once masters, this meal felt like mediocre Chinese takeout. While the waitstaff is lovely and mistakes happen (I still tipped 30% because it was Christmas), the food just wasn't good enough to warrant a return trip. I'm sad because this place used to be my favorite...one summer a friend and I ate there three times in one week. But things have changed and definitely not for the better.
