I'd give them a 0 star if I could. My husband really wanted beef ribs and he called to check if they were in stock. When they confirmed, he went over to get them, paid at the counter only to be told they were out of them. Disappointed, he nevertheless ordered the beef brisket meal with two sides and bbq chicken. They gave him greasy friend chicken instead of bbq chicken, the brisket was oily and tasted terrible, the Mac and cheese was flavorless and greasy and so were the hush puppies. Backyard BBQ Pit is listed on line as one of the top 50 BBQ spots in America and top 3 in Durham NC. I enjoy BBQ and I travel throughout the USA. I've eaten BBQ at road side sheds to Franklin's in Austin. I ordered the beef brisket, m&c and baked beans. Baked beans are an excellent Boston baked bean savory and sweet with right amount of brown sugar and molasses. m&c is a traditional m&c, even though it has an wonderfully cooked crust it was was cold when I got out to my car. The brisket was a huge disappointment. Grey in color. There was no bark. There was not even a smoke ring... the fat was not even rendered. Their brisket tastes more like grandma's overcooked Sunday pot roast than a smoked brisket. Brisket was tough and dry without a smoked flavor. If you want a good smoked bbq beef brisket, this is not the venue. It's the first time ever I did not finish my brisket. Last, the signage inside the restaurant is in chalk. The problem is most of the chalk is worn away and looks more like a grammar school chalk board at 230pm... smudged and ready to washed by the student in detention. read more

So upon entering the restaurant there were teens standing at the door handing out Halloween candy. There were just in the way to be honest. I could barely get in the door and they didn't move out of the way. Ok let's get to it... -appearance not one staff member was wearing a mask properly. Most of them didn't even have it on their face at all. Only one person was wearing gloves. That was the person that was taking payment AND fixing drinks. So don't get me started on the cross contamination from money to drinks. Then the people fixing food were either missing a hair net or just dirty looking in general (clothing). One had on a white t-shirt and it was so dingy. It looked like he had just finished working on a car. And don't get me started on them eating from the serving buffet. I'm going to leave the details about that out. -food I ordered a two piece pork chop plate with a side of Mac & cheese and yams/ sweet potatoes. I also ordered a flounder fish plate with Mac & cheese and collards. And a cup of lemonade to drink. I didn't like most things that I ordered. The pork chops had ZERO seasoning. I had no flavor at all. The "Mac & cheese" was more like "cheese no Mac "I can literally count my macaroni that was drowned in the cheese because it was so few of them in there. And no seasoning in to at all. The yams were oily. Like they just had too much grease in it or something. The collards had way too much vinegar in them. The only thing that was seasoned pretty good was the flounder fish and the complimentary hush puppies. The lemonade was very sour. No sugar was used to make it. They are usually on point with the lemonade but not today! Overall I am very unhappy with my food today. I was super hungry before I arrived and was very excited to order some wonderful soul food but I was very disappointed. I lost my appetite as I tried the different foods on my plate and it wasn't good each time. I paid over $35 for food that is in my trash can right now. The food is good, no doubt about it. But the service is really slow (to the point it was obvious I wasn't going to get food and be able to eat in lunch hour so I had to leave). They don't take orders over the phone. And I've stopped by during business hours and they were closed for special events (which I get - restaurants do that) but when I reached for the door some dude was (to put it politely) brusk. To my disappointment, I pulled up to the door and there it was...C-L-O-S-E-D... But the hotel dinner of suspicious salmon tonight gave me my best opportunity to convince a small group to ask the hotel van driver to bring us to Backyard BBQ Pit! So there we were a group of 5 political scientists, sociologists, and critical race scholars... We walked into the joint and up to the counter. Service was fast despite the long line of hungry patrons. The workers were super friendly. One of them noticed one of my colleagues who was looking really tired, and got her to smile. I got the pork ribs dinner with collard greens and mac & cheese, which I'd heard was amazing. Plus a sweet tea ... less than $11!!! I would have ordered a bottle of Fat Tire (BBQ with a great beer!), but I haven't had legit sweet tea in YEARS. So I had to go with the tea. We all sat down with bottles of hot sauce/secret sauce all around... as our table got quiet, everyone had smiles on their faces. One of my colleagues (a professor of political science) started dancing in her chair because the beans were that good! She let me try a bite, and I think there was brown sugar, a touch of cinnamon, and definitely a dollup of crack cocaine... OMG... amazing! It was sweet and smoky and filled with flavors dancing in my mouth. My pork ribs... I never used my knife. Fall off the bone, smoked to perfection with a perfect sauce with a slight kick of spice and a sweetness to it that really made this whole week! The ribs were so tender that even the bones were falling apart. The mac and cheese was not skimpy on the cheese... good quality cheddar cheese. I could have eaten a big bowl of it. And the greens were really good - just a touch on the too vinegary side, but the combination of flavors between all of the items on my plate - sweet, spicy, sour, savory, salty... Like I said, it all brought me to shed a few tears in front of people I've known strictly professionally since 3 days ago. And I wasn't the only one to exhibit emotion. Oh, and the servings were so massive that I could not finish my dinner. Don't worry... it didn't go to waste. Like some of my other yelper friends, it's hard for me to cast foodie judgement upon Backyard BBQ. If you're looking for a grungy BBQ spot where the door hits you on the bum on the way in (more figuratively then literally) this place might be your spot. Walls filled with compliments from all the satisfied people so you know people like the place, but in my opinion, it's a little off from the BBQ I usually go for. I have to agree with everyone else that the service is stellar. Of course, you only interact with them during the initial order. After entering the doors, the menu is directly in front and you'll usually have some time to glance at it as there's (commonly) a line of people in front of you. The food is lined up in a buffet style (only you're not serving yourself). The idea of food sitting in hot plates has never wowed me, and always gives slight hesitation for stomach issues. I tried the BBQ plate with pulled pork, mac and cheese and sweet potatoes (served with hush puppies as well!) and my lunch date tried the rib plate. Overall, food tasted good, the mac and cheese was overly oily and the sweet potatoes were fine. The ribs were more on the fatty side which isn't my favorite. Overall, the food was fine but didn't WOW me. I was also disappointed that the only condiments available were in giant bottles with the silverware and there were no small cups to put sauces in. Individual bottles on tables would be nice or tiny cups so you have a chance to taste the variety of sauces (I feel like that's a big deal in NC?! I'm no native so correct me if I'm wrong). Obviously people like Backyard BBQ Pit because they keep going back, maybe I hit them on a bad day or maybe my expectations are too high. I LOOOOOOOOOVE this place!!! I keep scouring the Southeastern United States to find a better pulled pork than Martin's Bar-B-Que (Nolensville, TN) and I haven't found it. But wow, did this place come close! And I must say, the excitement of going here is pretending it's one of those places you just happened upon during a road trip (rather than scouting it out on Yelp five years in advance). It's always fun to find those amazing places by accident, but I'm a classic firstborn and everything is so planned out these days. I enjoyed walking in to this classic hole-in-the-wall joint feigning surprise when eating this mind-blowing food, a completely different experience than the rustic décor and legendary status of Martin's where you expect greatness. Smoked over oak and hickory wood, their brisket is perfection, their pulled pork is juicy, their okra is sensational, and their macaroni and cheese is straight up dope!!! As a result, my odds of finding 5 Star places are extremely good! Having said that...WOW, what awesome bbq! The sweet, smokey chopped pork is delicious and stands on its own without sauce, but add some of their slightly spicy, Eastern Carolina vinegar-based sauce, and this Q explodes with flavor and awakens your taste buds with a sweet, spicy, tangy greatness that sets it apart from most bbq! My side of Brunswick Stew was also excellent--I have come to greatly appreciate the different takes on Brunswick Stew throughout the southern states! Unfortunately, the Mac & Cheese was just okay, but I've never had better hush puppies! They had an incredibly crunchy crust and were as sweet as a donut inside, making them perfect for sopping up juice from the leftover bbq sauce and Brunswick Stew. This place looks exactly like a great bbq restaurant should, and the service was efficient, helpful, friendly, and enthusiastic! Taking a break from breakfast to tour Cameron Indoor just a day after Duke's dramatic win over UNC it was onward to the first of two lunches that the dining adventure progressed and arriving just after 1:00pm to a space where the writing is literally 'on the walls' it was clear that the folks of Durham had missed their 'cue during the previous weather related two-day closure, nearly every seat in Backyard BBQ Pit filled with a small line just barely ending inside the doors. Undoubtedly a place where the food is more motivating that the décor, a discolored ceiling and tube lighting overseeing Formica tables that proved tightly spaced and rickety at best, it was with my mother waiting out a table that she had to clean off herself that I entered the quickly moving queue and soon standing at the counter it was with $13.99 paid that a "2 Meat and 2 Sides" tray was assembled, the pork an obvious choice while the turkey was promoted by the man beyond the counter as 'out of sight.' Featuring plating and utensils as upscale as one would expect from the steamy, sharpie-stained space it was no less than a few minutes after settling the tab that first bites were taken and although the pork at first seemed a bit too heavily vinegared subsequent bites revealed themselves as more balanced with even a bit of smoke peaking through at times, though certainly not as much as was the case with the surprisingly moist turkey that easily stole the show as neither sides nor the cornbread nuggets were particularly memorable save for the fact that the yams were essentially inedible amidst all the sweet glaze. read more

You know, I used to really like this place, maybe 4 or 5 years back. But my most recent visit left me slightly disappointed. I used to come here for the pulled pork barbecue, which was juicy, smokey, and delicious. Recently, I came and ordered some pulled pork, and it was still smokey, but definitely on the dry side. Even adding the vinegar sauce didn't help much - and it lacked the depth of flavor it used to have. It's still not terrible barbecue, but it's just not as I remembered it from before. The fried catfish I also tried was pretty good. The outside had a really nice crisp to it, and the fish was tender and moist. The hush puppies were pretty disappointing too. It wasn't really corn meal-y, it was more doughy than anything. Almost like a doughnut hole, which was kind of weird. They were out of okra when I went recently (go early, or they might run out of some things), so I had collards and mac n cheese as sides. Both sides I was happy with. The collards had really good flavor (although a bit on the greasy side), and it's hard to go wrong with mac n cheese. The place feels like a hole-in-the-wall - it definitely has a barbecue joint vibe to it, with the writing on the walls, the somewhat-sticky floors, the dated tables and seats, etc. The service is friendly and helpful, though, and the prices are fairly reasonable, for what you get. read more

I came from some authentic NC 'que and the Backyard BBQ pit did not disappoint. I was a little bit wary about this joint as I rolled up on it because it is in the middle of a typical Interstate exit commercial area. When I saw the little sign and the partial gravel parking lot I started feeling better. The deal was sealed, though, when I walked in the door and saw the menu hanging from a clothesline with homemade snapshots taking the place of more traditional POS images. The folks behind the counter looked authentic and there were quite a few people in line that knew their BBQ. I wanted to some different stuff so I ordered the Chopped Pork Plate with ribs, slaw, and mac and cheese. I also got an extra side of Brunswick Stew. TBH, the ribs, slaw, and mac and cheese were OK. The ribs were meaty, done well, with just the right amount of sauce, but they were a little too much work to get off the bone. You have probably had the mac and cheese at every church covered dish dinner you have ever been to. The slaw was cold, well chopped, and a nice complement to the pork. All three of these items were good and you won't be disappointed, but you won't go out of your way to come here for them. The Brunswick Stew was a little too salty for my taste and they put a big ole chunk of tater in my bowl that took up about half the portion. I only wanted a taste anyway, but I would have been disappointed if I had really wanted the stew. There was a nice mixture of corn, green beans, potatoes, and shredded pork. The chopped pork, however, was DELICIOUS and definitely worth going back for. That wonderful vinegar taste, the mix of colors with the smoke ring, the tenderness, the toughness of the outside portions - all were excellent. If you are going to be average in some places and amazing in others, I would vote to be amazing on your 'cue every time. The folks behind the counter were courteous - not overly friendly, but courteous just the same - and they were nice enough to throw a piece of white bread on my player upon request. I had prepared myself for walking into a slum - I had assumed, like good fried chicken, it was necessary for good bbq. When I drove up (in my rented PT Cruiser, no less), it was an unassuming brick building in a perfectly tolerable neighborhood. Then I got out of the car. What a heavenly smoky smell. Fast forward, back to reality. I opened the door and walked in. I'm sure the fixtures haven't been updated since the late 70s, but everything was clean. However, I'm sure some people find it oddly charming, but there was scrawl all over the walls. People are apparently encouraged to sign their names all over and instead of being cute, it was overly reminiscent of a giant bathroom stall. Please note that in lieu of napkins and dispensers, there were just a few rolls of paper towels lying about. Why 5 stars? AMAZING FOOD. I came wanting delicious dirty barbeque and greasy sides and that's EXACTLY what I got. Perfection. My ribs were delicious. Fried okra to order - not overly greasy, either. Collard greens with just the right amount of astringency. Golden, round, crispy-outside-soft-inside hush puppies. (LOVE the hush puppies.) All washed down with sugary delicious pineapple lemonade (with canned pineapples of course). I didn't find the bbq overly sweet, but it is on the sweeter side. The people were SO NICE, too. SO nice. Pescatarians can find some solace here with their meat-eating counterparts. I chose this place specifically so my fish-eating boy could have something to eat. I asked the reception at my hotel where's good BBQ, and he told me this place... and he said that "people seem to like it." I just had the ribs (two giant ones) and chicken (maybe a third of a chicken) combo plate, with two sides (mac n cheese and green beans) and now I'm way full. It didn't look like that much in the serving trays... but looked much bigger on the plate. The place is a hole in the wall, and that's kind of being polite. If it didn't smell so good outside, I would have never walked inside, but you have to give it a go... Made it there 15 minutes before they closed at 8pm, and they were locking the door 5 minutes after I arrived... Must be southern punctuality.. and glad I was rushing for once... But anyways, for $13, the combo plate was gut busting filling and fall off the bone, moist and delicious. Came with 3 hush puppies, and they were soooo good. The mac and cheese, somehow stays kind of moist despite sitting in a big ol' tray over steaming water. And the string beans must be for people with no teeth. Maybe just not my cup of tea. Best bbq in durham hands down! In comparison: Qshack hushpuppies are better (personal opinion) The pit in durham=awful I got the pork bbq with sweet potatoes/yams and collard greens. The pork was so juicy tender and delicious (unlike the pit which is always so dry and flavorless) The sides were also delicious and I'm not even a fan of collard greens! Friends loved the Mac and cheese too I had leftovers to take home and it was even more delicious later! I was hesitant to try this dingy looking place but its literally the best tasting BBQ I have had in NC so far. I know it's almost closing so here's the deets: bbq ribs- it's not as tender or falls off the bone(I'll give them the benefit of doubt maybe it was one of those days that it didn't cook right). Turkey, pulled pork and brisket it's ok but I've had better ones. The Mac and cheese saved the day for me. It's not overly cheesy but it's well seasoned. My verdict: this will be my first and last to go there. I'm not a fan. Sorry I did try my best to like it but it wasn't enough for me to really love it. Their smoked chicken is the only one I like however it didn't have any Smokey flavor in it. It just taste like regular rotisserie chicken to me. Nothing so special about it. Everyone loved the pork bbq, and the brisket was very much liked by the one in our group who got it. The pork bbq looked very good, but I'd had a bunch of pork recently, so I went with chicken, mac n cheese and collards. Collards were tender and very tasty...they sure weren't the low-fat version I make at home. Again, the real thing. The mac n cheese that everyone else raves over, I found to be greasy and floppy and very cheesy. Not quite my thing (except for the cheesy part), but this is the way it's done down here, and they do Southern to a T! Chicken had a great smokey flavor, but I found it to be dry. Extra sauces come in handy. Food is served in styrofoam, divided containers. Servings are large. Love the sauces that are offered...all good! Service was very friendly. And for anyone worried about cleanliness, sanitation rating was 97. Soft drinks are in cans. I will say it was HOT in there. We went on a Saturday afternoon. And not that hot outside. This place is crave-worthy. I've been here only a couple of times but definitely will be back. It's a hole in the wall place with great Carolina style BBQ. My favorite here is the pulled pork sandwich and I put on extra vinegar, bbq sauce, and hot sauce. Not sure how the locals do it, so I just put everything on it and still dream about it today.
