We fell in love with Back 40 A1A while renting an airbnb in the neighborhood. The staff was so very friendly and accommodating, and the prices are very reasonable. It is a beer/wine restaurant/bar with a nice variety of sandwiches, salads, burgers, and best of all, tacos. Outside tables are dog friendly with bowls of water available. Inside is clean and comfortable and decorated with assorted art by local artists. We enjoyed many lunches and dinners here during the month of March. Nice place for lunch or dinner after visiting the beach! We walked in here as were staying in the area and were greeted with friendly service. All of the employees are wearing masks and they have patio seating available. They have a bar inside and plenty of seating. They only do beer and wine so we tried their wine-based margarita. It was pretty good! Very close to the flavor of a traditional margarita but slightly sweeter. We started with the chips and beer cheese queso which was creamy, flavorful and comforting! You can definitely taste the beer in this cheese dip. Then we shared the Datil Pepper Shrimp & Grits. The bowl is filled with cheesy garlic grits and six Cajun shrimp. So yummy! (And what wine you don't drink you can take home in a corked bottle) The wait staff are super friendly and quick to serve. The restaurant is bright and clean and has a good vibe. There is a bar area to sit and also tables. We all ordered different tacos to eat. One person at our table was gluten free so he ordered his tacos on a corn tortilla instead of a flour one. The ingredients in each taco was fresh and flavorful. There was a good amount of filling in each taco. The sauce wasn't too spicy but if you're looking for more heat there were bottles of hot sauce on the table. The hot sauce was available for purchase so of course we bought one to take home. Honestly 1 taco and the side would have been enough. Husband had shrimp poo' boy with pasta salad and enjoyed his as well. We were passing through on I-95 and it was surely worth the trip. About 5 miles off the highway. I was a little disappointed that we weren't on the water - couldn't even see it. But, lunch today wasn't about the experience. A very clean and neat place to grab a drink and or a meal. Having driven for a couple of hours we became hungry between the usual meal times. Using Yelp to find a place to eat Back 40 came up as close. They had a fair number of customers given that it was mid afternoon. The server (wearing a mask) gave us menus and our drink orders were taken. I took the chance and ordered coffee. In the afternoon it can be iffy reheated morning brew. It was fresh and delicious. The food came quickly thereafter. My cheeseburger and potato salad fasted great. My wife got chili which she said was delicious. After two couples left, the server quickly sanitized the table and chairs where they been seated. We saw locals come in and be greeted by the staff. I have never left a negative review before as I worked as a server when younger and am usually not one to complain, however, this was the worst dining experience I've had in while. After ordering our food, almost an hour went by without our server coming back to our table. We had to wave down a separate server to ask about our food who said it would just be a few more minutes. The food took another 30 minutes and when it came it was below average at best. The chicken was dry and the food was bland and flavorless. All in all we arrive at the restaurant at 7:30, put in our orders before 8, then got our food at 9. We expected to get a discount off our check for waiting over an hour for our food but instead were greeted with a single slice of pie as an apology for the 4 of us. This place was a little hard to find if you're unfamiliar with the area, but it was well worth the hunt. I have very picky kids, and they absolutely loved the sweet potato fries. My husband ordered the drunkin burrito, which was HUGE and tasted amazing. I got the jerk chicken tacos, and I'm not sure what sauce they put on it, but I asked for extra and dunked my tacos in it.
