Come if you like super-greasy, overpriced Italian food. I came to Bacaro with high expectations, given that so many people like it better than Al Forno, but I was definitely underwhelmed. The pizza was dripping gallons of grease, and the tapas were not fresh. Bacaro's USP is its extensive tapas menu and selection of charcuterie/cheeses. I'm vegetarian, and a quick scan of the tapas menu revealed that the only vegetarian tapas were crazy cheesy and/or deep fried. OK with me...however, my tapas didn't taste fresh at all...I'm pretty sure they made them ahead of time and just reheated them for me. I tried the eggplant parm and the battered grilled cheese sandwich. However, I will concede that the Shropshire cheese was delicious. To balance out the grease, I ordered the mango, beet, and avocado salad. While the salad had beautiful presentation, I didn't think the flavor of the mango meshed well with the avocado. I'd avoid it if/when you come here. The one thing I would definitely order is the mushroom pasta with truffle oil and a poached egg. This is INSANELY delicious and has a really lovely truffle flavor. Rented an Alfa Romeo two years ago and drove from Rome to Milan experiencing the great tables of Tuscany. Bacaro would fit right in. I could easily spend an hour describing our dining experience at Bocaro and the individual dishes we each enjoyed. Let me instead point out what sets this fine restaurant apart from other Italian restaurants. The choice of small dishes is extraordinary in both the number of options and their creativity - they cover 2 columns of a double sided legal size sheet. Cheeses, vegetables, fish and meats galore. For example - Anchovies pressed between two sage leaves and fried, bresaola - air cured this slices of beef, creamed baccala over small polenta cakes and flatbread with crispy Jerusalem artichokes and crushed chickpeas. I spent a long time considering the equally creative selection of entrees. I selected spaghettini with oil , garlic, preserved lemon and grated bottarga (cured tuna roe). It was not at all oily, but lite, bright and flavorful and an excellent twist on a traditional. I've found that my female friends tend to LOVE this place and their significant others are more "meh" - so may not be everyone's favorite, but never had a complaint. I really enjoy small bites of many things, and a leisurely meal with many dishes. This place delivers every time. It is so sad to think that there are people who will not eat pork. What a delightful restaurant, butressed by its over-achieving salumeria and wine bar. The restaurant has an extensive menu. But when I was presented with the list of meat's and cheeses available, I put down my menu, and picked up my pencil. You see, ordering here is a bit of a different experience. Our waiter told us there are a lot of different kitchens and things come out at different times, when they are ready. To order the deliious meats and cheeses, one must actually fill out a form. Luckily, the waiter has an extra supply of golf pencils. This ordering gambit can be a bit tricky, especially if you are with people who are interested in all sorts of different things. For me, a highlight was the thin cold slices of roast suckling pig. I have no idea how they did it. My guess is they deboned a whole baby pig, tied it up, and roasted it with herbs. Then put the whole thing in their hand powered meat slicer. A little more education from the staff (a plate of 3 meats was dropped off without acknowledging what each one was), smaller portions of the gargantuan entrees (with slightly lower prices to match), and a slightly more accomodating ordering system would make this place unbeatable. Oh, and the pizza is fantastic. Just don't bring a child who loves pizza and think that THEY will be happy with pizza. It's a bit rustic. Thin and crispy and delicious. But it doesn't LOOK like pizza. After all the anticipation, when it came, the little one burst into tears. Hearbreaking, truly. Luckily the kiddo filled up on prosciutto. That's my boy. read more

I call Bacaro the Al Forno lite-- and that's not a diss. It's a delightful restaurant with greater antipasto, drinks/wine, pizza, entries, and dessert. Their prices are similar and inexpensive for what you get but it's not a knockout punch like AF. The parking and location sure is a hell of a lot better than most Federal Hill places or AF. The charcuterie boards are probably the best of any of the italian restaurants in Provy. You'd only do better going into Tony's Colonial or Venda Ravioli and ordering in bulk. The pizzas are grilled and similar in size/flavor to AF as are the tart deserts. I wouldn't be surprised if it's owned by similar folks or utilize similar pastry chefs. However it still lacks the same muster. The entrees are fair with good handmade pastas. The fungi truffle dish with warm egg takes the cake. It's a legit 5star pasta. I can't stop ordering it. Try the Bacaro Cocktail if you enjoy campari and grapefruit. It won't disappoint. Service is very good and certainly less snoody than most italian providence joints. My wife and I haven,t been there for about a year and 1/2. We were very excited because the last time we went there with our Son and his wife it was Spectacular. The couple we went with were very impressed with the Ambiance and how fast we were seated at our Reserved table. The food we ordered was just Ok, but not Fantastic like before. High ceilings, exposed wooden beams, and amazing views of either the river and downtown or the bustling kitchen makes this a really lovely place to spend an evening. The first floor has the bar, but if you go for dinner, I'd definitely request a table on the second floor which seemed more lively to me (plus, that's where the kitchen is!). Bacaro has a huge menu of salads, charcuterie, pastas, pizzas, fish, meats, desserts, etc., and also a tapas menu filled with a ton of different small bites. We came here for the restaurant week prix fixe, but we just couldn't resist trying one of the tapas dishes. They all looked so good! We decided on the duck breast with blueberry chutney on toasted brioche. It was amazing. Loved every bite. Our other food was good, but not as delicious as the duck breast. I had the pasta con i fungi (basically pasta with poached egg + mushrooms + cheese + butter) which was served perfectly al dente. Future husband had the crispy chicken over pasta fagioli which was decent but a little bland. For dessert we had the doughnuts filled with a Nutella type sauce and the quince and apple crisp with caramel ice cream. The crisp, which came out piping hot, was by far the better dessert. I'd call this review a "mixed review". We spontaneously went here this past Saturday night with no reservations and the hostess assured us that she'd make something work. Which she did. She was fantastic! On a busy waterfire night and a busy loud restaurant, a quiet and whispering - soft spoken waitress was who took our order, was less than ideal given the environment. Despite feeling hearing impaired we were able to place our orders (we are early 40's). The cornbread fritters were excellent and the different staff member who brought them brought them to us also brought the positive energy the rest of restaurant had! ;) In fact every staff member who brought our orders had great energy and presence. Then the mixed greens arrived. Can't recommend this. We were expecting a mixed green salad instead a plate of lettuce with quite a salty dressing arrived . FYI, it's literally just salty lettuce. I'd skip it. However the pizza that came next was fantastic. The wood smoke flavor was like another ingredient! We loved it. We also loved the way it was cut. Really enjoyed the pizza. We would have gotten dessert but we were told at the beginning by our server that desserts are made to order and need to be ordered when we placed out food order. So the hostess, pizza and the corn fritters were a 10 out of10. Well done and thank you! In a sea of great restaurants in Providence, Bacaro definitely holds its own. I went to Bacaro with some coworkers and were quite impressed with the menu, service and ambiance. The restaurant has a bit of old world charm with wood paneling, brass rails and an almost old steakhouse feel complete with eclectic music selection. I was also very happy to see a case of cheeses and meats that are fresh cut to order as we walked upstairs to another dining area. There is a long ranging cocktail list and plenty of wines to choose from which is good considering the extensive menu Bacaro offers. From a small bites menu to a long list of meats, seafood, and pastas, everyone will have something that they appreciate. I personally went with the grilled swordfish and the kitchen was happy to replace the jasime rice with quinoa (a side for a different dish). I will say I felt the price point was a bit high for what we got (entrees ranging from $28 - $38), but the quality of food is definitely there. Service was friendly, attentive and not intrusive. The only reason I didn't push this restaurant to 5 stars is due to the price to value. I'm fine spending money on quality food, but Bacaro didn't fully impress me for the price. If you're looking for a great night out and are less worried about cost, Bacaro is a great choice. read more

I generally have dinner early at Bacaro's as the restaurant can get quite busy. One seasonal item that is an absolute must is the Native Tomato and Sweet Corn salad. I tend not to eat whole or portioned tomatoes but make an exception for this dish. This is a very fresh dish with flavorful red onions, basil, croutons, and balsamic vinaigrette. Another great dish is the Crispy Chicken over Pasta Fagioli. The noodles are heavily buttered in a good way, and the chicken is always moist inside the crispy exterior. Other dishes worth trying include the Pasta Con I Funghi, and the Roasted Narragansett Littlenecks. A lot of other people dining at Bacaro's will talk about the pizza so I won't say much except they can be a bit on the salty side and the crust could be made to be a bit more crispier (the pizza can get soggy quickly). Overall, the food is excellent, the bar staff (when it's the women) are excellent, the hostess great and the cocktails are great. While the food and other service are excellent, the table wait staff requires some serious professional training. This represents the greatest threat to excellence at this restaurant. The table staff (the male servers in particular) have a terrible habit of abruptly interrupting table conversations and tend to be aggressive in doing so. I wonder if this table-side manner is because they are all fairly young and may be compensating for not feeling heard. This is a bit off-putting but I suspect it is a temporary COVID-related issue that will adjust itself in the near future. read more

My husband and I went out for date night with another couple and we were all looking forward to a nice dinner and adult atmosphere. We made a reservation for 5pm and arrived promptly at 4:59. The restaurant opens at 5 so perhaps they should stop making multiple reservations at the same time because when we got there there was a line out the door and around the corner onto the street. Since people were social distancing, there were only 3 parties ahead of us, who we assumed had 5pm reservations as well. It took the hosts 12 minutes to seat 3 tables, which is pathetic since there were literally 4 people at the host stand who were working on this. The second we were finally greeted and allowed to check in after watching them looking around and not acknowledging us at the stand, the first thing out of the hosts mouth was "Well, its 5:10 and your reservation was at 5 and we have a reservation for your table at 7pm so you will have to leave by then." EXTREMELY rude, especially since we were on time and it was their incompetence that caused us to be late. The attitude out of the host (white shirt, thick curly hair) was disgusting and immediately turned us off. We pointed out that they could check the cameras and see that we were in line on time and had to wait for them to get to us. We were polite about it, but after being snapped at before even saying a hello or good evening, we felt the need to point out that it was not our fault. I would have been completely understanding if the issue was ours, but I don't find it appropriate at all to be nasty when they were incompetent and in the wrong about the whole thing. Our waitress, Courtney and the bar staff were amazing. The food was great and we enjoyed our appetizers, dinner, and desserts very much. Thank you to Courtney and the bar/wait staff for being so hospitable and wonderful! Unfortunately, at 6:53pm some poor girl got suckered in by the rude hostess and was forced to come to our table with the check and say "I was told that you were told to leave by 7, so here's your check" ... all while the hostess watched her do this from the corner. Not sure who that hostess thinks she is but apparently she's a bully to her coworkers as well. We made our payment while discussing with ourselves how inappropriate this girl's behavoir was and our poor wait staff just said "I'm so sorry, that doesn't make for a good experience at all. They take too many reservations and do this to us all the time." I also want to point out that there were 5 empty tables upstairs as well as several downstairs at this point... We paid our bill and were ready to get the hell out of there (as we clearly weren't welcomed from the start) when the bitchy hostess came to the table and told us we needed to move to the bar because she already told us we had to leave. My husband quickly told her she needs to work on her attitude since we were just standing up to leave. She got even MORE confrontational and was flailing her hands around, barking at us that we were late - when we weren't and that was enough. My friend asked to speak to the manager or owner and she just went "YEP!" and spun around and stormed off. We left our table and waited downstairs for ANY type of leadership to come and nothing. No manager or owner came. We even reached out to the owners directly (social media can give you a lot of info) and no response. Completely dispicable. Clearly this hostess runs the show and does a terrible job doing so. If you can't get 4 people to sit 3 tables faster than 10 minutes, then don't make your guests immediately feel attacked due to your incompetence. Perhaps stop starting around at the walls and acknowledge your patrons immediately if you are so worried about being prompt. EVEN IF A GUEST IS LATE THERE IS STILL AN APPROPRIATE WAY TO SPEAK TO PEOPLE. The great food and drink were completely drowned out by the terrible lack of leadership, bad attitudes, and clear disconnect between host and service staff. This is the place for amazing delicious food with a seasonal menu that is creative without being pretentious. Bacaro pays homage to classic Italian dishes such as Rigotoni Bolegnese (which one of our friends ordered), while adding some flair to staid and true pasta dishes. For an example of this I ordered papardelle with spring peas and lamb meatballs. My wife had trout which looked like it could have graced the cover of Bon Appetit. The flavor profile was just as satisfying as the look. Our other friend ordered manicotti in a crepe style with ricotta infused with essence of lemon. Just fabulous! It's our 3rd time to this restaurant in as many months. The appetizers and tapas are worth the start and save room for the homemade ice cream. A nice wine selection will leave you satisfied from the start. Waitstaff is kind and courteous without being stuffy. They'll chat with you, share their favorites and tell stories of how committed the kitchen staff is to getting everything right. Don't dine at the bar - first experience at Bacaro was less than welcoming and enjoyable. NOT because of the food ( I'll get to that later) but because of the male bartender with star tattoos on his elbows. I can assure you that was the only thing about him that was *star quality! Dismissive and arrogant best describe him. He treated the bar back and customers similarly. It was as if he was the (bad) teacher and we were his students. We ordered a bottle of wine and I asked for bread. To which he quipped, "When You Order Your Food I'll bring you bread" ( gasp! I was completely caught off guard) so so rude. Then without being asked, the bar back brought bread and olive oil. When we could get the bartender's attention - he was more obsessed with the people standing behind the patrons at the bar ( seemed like his friends) we ordered two appetizers the wood grilled octopus ( the sauce was super good.. and prosciutto sliced perfectly was good as well. Onto the main course ribs ( large portion and very tender) and the Pasta Bolognese.. there really was very little sauce on pasta dish and was a bit over salted( didn't complain about that) so bartender was asked for some extra sauce and he assumed Bolognese and quickly snapped "I'll have to charge you $10" ... But we told him we just wanted the pomodoro aka marinara sauce which is no charge. After dinner my Dad was able to get the bartender's attention to order a drink- a simple beer to be exact.. Star Elbows took the order, but didn't get the beer, instead he just started making a bunch of drink orders he had just received after my dad's order. When asked if he could get the beer first before making all those drinks he was very rude.. and said he had drinks to make ( the other bartender spoke to Stars and she returned and asked my dad if there was anything she could get for him. She was very nice.. more like an actual bartender. So as you can see, this review wasn't food focused - I apologize. I went to Bacaro about 2 weeks ago for my friend's birthday and the experience was amazing. I had never been to Bacaro, and I've been to about every restaurant in Providence, as a Providence College student. The experience was off the charts. First off, we were a party of 10 that was easily and comfortably accommodated for on the upstairs level of the restaurant. We all ordered our drinks that arrived in a very timely manner. I am an expert on Aperol Spritz and they made it perfectly. We then put in a couple pizzas for appetizers and oh my god were they delicious. We ordered the regular Margherita and then the pizza with prosciutto and arugula. My favorite was the prosciutto and arugula. For entree, we all ordered different things. I ordered the Pasta Con I Funghi and it was one of the best pasta dishes I have ever had. I also asked them if they would be able to add pancetta, and it was absolutely no problem. I am excited to go back and order a charcuterie board next time because the cheese and cured meats section on the first floor looked insane. The tapas also caught my eye and I definitely want to try them. It is important for me to point out that I usually like to go to Federal Hill for Italian food. My go-to spots are Siena and Constantinos. These restaurants were my favorite for a while, until Bacaro blew it out of the ballpark. I still have my fave meals at Siena and Constantinos, but Bacaro is now my favorite spot hands down. The menu is so diverse and there is something for everyone! I can't give this restaurant high stars even though the food is generally good because the service is so very bad. It is very disappointing because we heard very good reviews about this restaurant. I will start with the good. When my husband made the reservation, he told them it was a special occasion and the table we received was very nice with a view of the river. As we had been to Bacaro once before and had similar service issues, we decided to give it another try again last night after receiving a gift certificate for our wedding. We got there an ordered a bottle of wine that they did not have. We selected another based on the staff's recommendation which was a little more expensive but not nearly as good. This would not have mattered except we could not order food for at least another 30 minutes. So we had plenty of time to ruminate over the selection because we could not even get a slice of bread. O (On our first visit, we did not get the wine we ordered for at least 30 minutes and had to start our meal without it. I am not sure which was worse.) Once we finally were able to order, only some of the first course came. They completely forgot about our appetizer and one of our small plates. They did comp one of the appetizers and they corrected the issue before they brought our entrees (on our last visit we barely got appetizers and our entrees arrived so this was an improvement). The entrees were ok but not great and it was close to 10:00 pm on a Tuesday by the time we got them (7:30pm reservation). I have been coming to this restaurant for years always great food and great service until last night when I went to my niece's birthday!!! First of all the service was horrible!!! The waiter was removing drinks and food without even asking!!! I had the crispy chicken and pasta and beans and it was horrible. I wouldn't even take the rest home!!! I ate half a piece and left the rest!!! At one point when the birthday cake was taken out I had to ask the waiter three times to get a knife so my niece could make a wish and he kept telling me me they cut the case and then service!!! After three times of telling him she wanted to make a wish and finally telling him I needed the knife for her to make wish it was a family tradition !!! He finally understood. And we were rushed out the restaurant because they had 8:30 reservations but they starting pushing it at 7:15!!! We finally got up and left at 8!!!! We're back in Providence! Nice week for bit of stress reduction. Providence is a town rich with history and has grown into being a fantastic food destination. This will be our first but not our last meal at Bacaro. Italian tapas, a Salumi menu, hot and cold antipasto, it's difficult to describe how many tastes that are offered inside their very complete menu. Desserts are made to order. No crusty confections. No refrigerated pre prepared commercial bits. Which also describes everything else on the menu. Preparation, presentation, imagination and most importantly, satisfaction! An absolutely fantastic experience. With my living 3.5-4 hours from here, my memory will be taxed remembering the details and the nuances of this fabulous Restaurant Thank You Bacaro for the opportunity to sample a small portion of your goods. From the tapas to their cheeseboard - everything is delicious and I had a Caesar salad to start and it was probably the best Caesar salad I've ever had. I don't know why more people don't talk or come to Bacaro because everything is excellent. The staff is also super friendly and attentive. Although this place is expensive! I chose this restaurant for my birthday dinner. We had a reservation but got there early to have a drink at the bar. We sat for several minutes before being acknowledged, which was frustrating. While making others' drinks we observed the male bartender putting his hands on the tops of the glasses and tapping the tops of the straws into the drinks. This seemed weird since this is where people put their mouths. Our dinners were tasty but pricy for what we received. We had a delicious Caesar salad to start with, but $15 for it was steep. I dined at Bacaro this past week for the first time. I initially sat at the bar while waiting for the rest of my party to arrive. The bartenders were very pleasant and definitely know how to make an excellent Cosmo. Others enjoyed a basil vodka gimlet which was garnished with a basil leave, lime and was very delicious. While being shown to our table there was a little confusion. We started off on our way upstairs and then were told that we were sitting downstairs (I would have thought that this was already decided as we had reservations). Service from the start was terrible. The waitress seemed overwhelmed & her retention span was lacking. We had to ask for bread after being served our appetizers . We waited for water & grated cheese and finally obtained these items from another waiter. We asked a young kid going by to take an empty glass to which he responded that he was not doing that job tonight. Reluctantly he did take the empty glass. The waitress forgot a drink ( she only had 3 to remember & 2 being the same). Basil vodka gimlets ordered at the table came with no basil garnish. No consistency. Service was lousy but the food was DELICIOUS. The zucchini flowers & corn salad were very good as was the bolognese. It's just too bad that the service was extremely lacking. For the price that we paid for the evening, I was very dissatisfied with the service. No matter how great the food is at a restaurant, if the service is terrible people are reluctant to return. Hopefully management can rectify this problem as the food was above my expectation. read more

My fiancé and I were in for dinner last Saturday , the food was delicious however the service was not up to par. Our server did not ask us how our meal was once until we were both finished , another waiter brought us bread and oil because we couldn't get his attention to bring it himself , and the grated cheese I received was from another waiter as well because ours was non existent most of the night . We also felt obligated to order dessert because we were asked 3 times if we wanted any . We received a gift card from family for Christmas to use here but if this is the way the service is , we probably won't be back . read more

Came here for dinner on a very busy night. The staff was phenomenal. The bartender Crystal was very friendly and welcoming. I started with some wine and arroncini from the tapas list. It was excellent. For my entree I had the pasta con i funghi, it was incredible. One of, if not the best meal I've had in Providence. Place had a great vibe with plenty of parking. I cannot wait to go again. read more
