After decades of fine dining, my wife and I hit a wall a few years ago. All the high-end restaurants (not just in Atlanta but everywhere) seemed to either be formal "fancy" dining with boring menus and crazy high prices, or chef-centric places more interested in showing off the kitchen's chops than providing an enjoyable experience for diners. We'd rather find a hole in the wall on Buford Highway. But with a big anniversary coming up, we thought we should go someplace nice. I chose Avize because the menu looked much more interesting and cohesive than any of the other fine dining options I checked out. I was not disappointed. It was one of the best meals I've had in Atlanta in years. Service was very attentive though, admittedly, we were one of only a couple of tables. The sommelier spent a long time with us discussing our tastes and recommending options before settling on a funky and delicious bottle from a small producer in France. For the first course we ordered venison tartare and ramp and morels three ways. The ramp and morel dish was a showcase, though the venison was probably the star of the evening. For mains I got the fermented carrot Bolognese. Delicious and well-executed, though probably less adventurous than the name suggested. The lamb definitely showcased the chef's skills, with four or five different cuts and preparations on the plate, but focused on flavor rather than showiness. We also shared two sides. The tartiflette - a cheesy, bacony potato dish - and fried artichokes in a delicious pesto cheese sauce. There were no disappointments. Every dish was inventive, beautiful, delicious and reminiscent of our time in Switzerland and northern Italy. It's also worth mentioning that the portion sizes were just right - we left full but not stuffed. Total came to under $300 including wine, tax and tip, which is quite reasonable for that level of food and service (the tasting menu is quite a bit more). Avize wants to bring the Alps to West Midtown, and, on the plate, it mostly pulls it off. North America's 50 Best. We came in ready to be transported. The mains earned it. My steak was right, and my wife's fermented carrot bolognese was a complete thought--the dish you only get somewhere willing to take the swing and connect. But the openers were too clever by half, at least in execution. The North Georgia trout carpaccio came out like Swedish Fish. The peach salad arrived with prepubescent peaches. We were checked out enough by the end to wave off dessert. Then the actual room reminds you what a top-50 actually bought you. The dining room ran cold, so my wife asked for a blanket. She was told there were two, both taken, and that requests to buy more had already been refused. Read that again. A top-fifty restaurant rationing blankets like wartime supplies. She ended up flagging a woman on her way out for the one she gave back. The Alpine, immersive, cared-for experience--outsourced to a departing stranger. The service lost the thread early and never found it. Ninety seconds after taking our drink order, our server asked whether we'd ordered drinks. Later, wine had to be flagged down, and when it arrived he couldn't remember what we'd requested. And the fruit flies. At our table, and--for thematic consistency--in the men's room. Fruit flies. At No. 29 in North America. The kitchen can clearly cook. But you don't crack a top-fifty list to ration blankets and split the room with fruit flies. They validate parking for 3 hours if you self-park in the garage next to the restaurant. There's also valet service available. We chose to self-park and made a reservation in advance for our anniversary dinner. It was my first time visiting, so I was amused by the life-size alpine goat décor in the center of the restaurant. The server was knowledgeable about the menu and attentive, though it became a bit harder to find him toward the end of the dinner. That said, the other servers were also very professional and friendly. The food is good, though some dishes had unexpected flavors. Not bad, just not what I personally expected or preferred, but my boyfriend happily finished those dishes. We had: - Amuse-bouche: a complimentary starter from the restaurant - Pretzel bread with homemade butter: complimentary and perfectly balanced in flavor - Dandelion salad: a bit too sweet for my taste the more I ate it. The sweetness comes naturally from marigold pollen and nuts, but it was a bit much for me - Lemon pepper frog legs: slightly too salty and sour for my preference - Pomme rösti (trout roe with cream on crispy layered potato): this dish was good, though I kept thinking it looked like fried tofu - Jäger schnitzel: this chicken entrée was very good - Halibut: I didn't want the curry, so they kindly accommodated my request and served the curry on the side, even though it normally comes with the fish - Tiramisu for dessert, and they also brought us white pepper ice cream as a complimentary anniversary treat. That was a really nice gesture. The ice cream was refreshing with an interesting flavor Keep in mind that the complimentary bread will be charged if you request a second serving. If we had known, we probably wouldn't have ordered more. The server suggested the bread would pair well with the frog legs and asked if we wanted extra, so we went for it. However, the bread actually paired better with the butter than with the frog leg dish. When checking out, they give you a chocolate truffle in a mini chest. I loved the mini chest! I decided to try the girl dinner happy hour with some girlfriends on a Wednesday after work. We got there at like 5:30ish and they only had this low table and a variety or chairs left but that was the only table that wasn't outside so we took it. The normal "happy meal" is unlimited Caesar salad, truffle fries, and a mini martini for $20 which is a great deal. None of my friends are martini drinkers so we decided to just get unlimited Caesar and fries which is $16 and order the happy hour margaritas which was $10 and not too bad. The Caesar salad is kale and sprinkles of broccoli which might not be everyone's vibe but the salad is delicious. The fries are seasoned well and are nice and crispy. I just would've preferred a nice aioli to dip it instead of ketchup but that's just personal preference. I only had the Caesar and fries but my friends tried the burger, bougie chicken nuggets and the duck and they all said their food was really good. My only complaint was they ended up opening the windows/doors so it made the whole place super stuffy and hot and flies were flying all around our food. I visited Bar Avize, the bar & patio area behind the Avize restaurant, for the happy hour. The bar area is gorgeous and nicely decorated. It is a quaint atmosphere, with a decent amount of seating. We started with the happy hour meal (served 5-7pm everyday) which was the endless broccoli Caesar salad, endless frites and a martini. My friend and I also ordered the caviar bump and the bougie chicken nuggets. Everything was delicious, especially the chicken nuggets. The broccoli Caesar salad was very unique because it was broccoli and kale mix, but we all really enjoyed it. It's a perfect restaurant for a girl dinner to start a night out. read more

We had a great dinner last night at Avize Modern Alpine in West Midtown. I've been to a lot of restaurants and can't say I'd ever been to an "Alpine" restaurant until now. Avize describes Alpine as "a mashup of French, Italian, Swiss, German, and Austrian cultures." To me, it felt like a New American restaurant with European flair. The food, drink, service, and ambiance were solid. I think this is a fine choice for a nice night out in Atlanta. It's certainly unique. For details, keep reading. Avize opened on October 3, 2024 in West Midtown's Stockyards mixed-use development; same place as The Painted Duck (bowling). During our visit, parking options were $5-plus-tip valet and self-parking in the garage. Avize validates self-parking for 3 hours (after that, it's $5 and up). If you self-park, exit the garage on Level P3 for Avize. This is a beautiful, swanky restaurant, highlighted by a white mountain goat in the center of the dining room. In the back, there's the more casual and loungey "Bar Avize" and outdoor patio. Reservations are recommended (Resy). The two co-founders have a lot of industry experience, including in Atlanta at now-Michelin-starred Atlas (both worked at Atlas), Bacchanalia, and Mujo. Co-founder/sommelier Taurean Philpott was the one who checked us in and validated my parking. I liked that the food menu was fairly simple and straightforward. We tried most of it. We were told some of the restaurant's investors have their favorite steins here. This and the Young Grass Hoppa were fantastic. The one thing that struck me about the food is how original and creative the dishes were. All around, they were well executed and consistently delicious; there wasn't a single bad dish. Also, they were all excellent in terms of plating and presentation. My favorites were the Beet Carpaccio, Frog Legs, Foie Gras Parfait, Deer, Halibut, Tartiflette, Pommes Rosti, and Tiramisu (finished off at the table with shaved truffle). The Deer was tender and appetizing. The Duck was a bit tough, but still had terrific flavor. There were some unexpected Asian influences, like the matcha in the dessert cocktail and the milk tea in the ice cream. Why four stars instead of five? It's close and I'm being picky here, but none of the dishes blew me away. Also, the attention to detail could've been better. For example, one of the plates served to me was wet; not a big deal, but that wouldn't happen at a place like, say, Mujo. Another example is our leftovers were boxed up and hung by the exit. No one told us they'd be left there. When we left, we had to open the boxes to figure out whose leftovers were whose (there was another unmarked bag of leftovers hanging by the exit too). Finally, there were a couple fruit flies/gnats flying around our table, one of which got into my wife's wine. I realize these are nitpicky things, but my standards are higher for a fine-dining restaurant. I recommend Avize and I hope it succeeds. Came to Bar Avize with some friends for happy hour after seeing so much talk about their girl dinner. The "happy meal" is unlimited Caesar salad, truffle fries, and a mini martini for $20 but the group opted to just get unlimited Caesar and fries which is $16 and order the happy hour margaritas which was $10. A few of us got some additional items like the duck, the burger & the bougie chicken nuggets. The Caesar salad was soo good, definitely right up my alley and the fries - who can say no to truffle?! Only thing that would've made it better would have been an aioli or something other than ketchup. The bougie chicken nuggets were really good but be mindful they are spicy! I didn't mind but one of my friends couldn't take the heat. I'd opt out of getting these again next time. I was told the burger and the duck were really good! Food was really quick to come out! All you had to do was order your refills or new items directly from the website. Towards the end of our visit they ended up opening the windows/doors which let in the heat and tons of flies flying all around our food. Came for the vibes, stayed for the fries... eventually I decided to check out the viral girl dinner happy hour--because, obviously, endless truffle fries and martinis sounded like the dream. Let's start with parking: yes, there's a covered lot and they'll validate for 2 hours (maybe 3?), but before you even get a chance to pull in, there's a valet guy channeling bouncer energy. He was practically insisting on valet like he was gatekeeping the lot. I respect the hustle, but he was creating a mini traffic jam and seemed a little too annoyed that I knew self-parking was even an option. First attempt: no reservations for happy hour (which is fair), but when we arrived, it was patio seating only... on a 90° day. Hard pass. We bailed and hit up Rock Steady up the street instead (blessed A/C!). Round two, weeks later: same valet drama, but we scored indoor seating this time. Sort of a win? It was still warm enough inside that girls were fanning themselves with menus like they were at a Beyoncé concert. The A/C was trying its best, bless its heart. Now to the good part: I ordered the NYC Happy Meal (aka the girl dinner)--a martini, endless truffle fries, and endless broccoli Caesar salad. Honestly? It slapped. Everything was delicious and the portions kept flowing like a bottomless brunch dream. The servers were super on it too--refills came out fast and hot. My wife and I came to this restaurant to celebrate my bday and it did not disappoint! The service was excellent thanks to all of our servers (special thanks to Gabby). Such a vibe! From the first dish to the last, all the flavors were top tier. We've bee on a mission to try out off of Atlanta's fine dining offers and so far, Avize sits high up on that list for us. For the food, we started off with Pumpkin Gnocchi and the Venison Tartare. I could eat the tartare every day of the week! Both of this starters were excellent. We then moved on to the mains where my wife ordered the lamb and I the duck. Both of those dishes were excellent as well! Super creative. Service was good, you order from the app and they will bring it to you. But the staff is available for any assistance. The only reason I gave this place 4 stars is because the happy hour menu isn't much of a deal unless you get the unlimited refills option, which did not come with drinks I liked. IG helped me find this spot. It seemed like such a great deal. You can bet a Caesar salad and fries. Plus a martini! We popped over on a Friday. It was a little tricky finding how to get in. I would say walk through the parking deck to the back to find the door. We sat outside. The patio was nice just hot. Would be great to have some fans out there. The Caesar is i made with broccoli which is nice because it keep that crunch. I do wish I had added on the chicken nugget. I had my martini with gin and it was light and crisp. For the app we got the Venison Tartare that they're like known for. It was extremely satisfying, so much flavor. For my entree I got the Poulet Grenbloise which was 10/10! Amazing portion too. Loved the food at Bar Avize! Hated the way our waitress Erin/Aaron charged me for additional items that weren't ordered. A group of us went for happy hour and ordered drinks plus a happy hour meal. The waitress charged me for 3 extra orders of fries and 3 salads that we never ordered. She did this without my knowledge and ran my credit card. When I saw the amount of the bill I immediately asked why it was way more than expected. She told me that because my friends ate a FEW of my fries, she had to charge me for an additional order for each person at the table. Never in my life have I heard of anything as absurd as this. Of course I requested the manager and after waiting for about 30 minutes, he reversed the charge and corrected my bill. But as a vegetarian, I don't feel like you get to experience the full extent of the menu and the chef's perspective. I think a good way to approach this restaurant is to get multiple items and share them because the portions are small, but the flavors are super intense so you wanna try everything and have a couple bites. The fries were perfect and the salad was so satisfying. I got the roasted duck and I loved how crispy the skin was and tender the inside was. My husband got the bratwurst and enjoyed it. They were pretty good at getting the food out fast. The outside entrance is unassuming with the numbers in the window above the main entrance door, and you then walk into the waiting hostess area, bordered by thick velvet curtains. Once unveiled, you enter a swanky alpine-themed restaurant. The servers are kind, knowledgeable and truly seem like they are happy to be there! We started with a complimentary amuse bouche (yummy savory layered custard within an eggshell). We then had the venison tartare (very refreshing, texture was interesting and almost minced) and the Flammkuchen (yummy flatbread with crème fraiche, bacon and onions - comfort food) to start. I had the alpine swizzle initially to drink -- refreshing rum drink, topped with snow cone ice, not too sweet, very tasty! We shared the main course of Schlutzkrapfen 'mezzaluna' (moon shaped pasta filled with mushrooms with a brown butter creamy sauce) -- pretty small portion with about 6 small pastas and the side of the Pommes rösti (essentially a hashbrown topped with elderflower crème fraiche and roe). Finally, for dessert, we had Mont Blanc (small tart within banana, brown butter caramel flavor and a nice meringue topping) and I had the Young Grass Hoppa (creamy Grass hopper drink). We received two dark chocolate passionate fruit caramels at the end of the meal. AMAZING. Self-parking is validated by the restaurant, or there is $5 valet parking right by the entrance! I attended a DuMOL wine dinner at Avize last night along with approximately 30 other guests. This was a private, prepaid/ticketed event that was $250 per person, including a multicourse meal with wine pairings. Tax and gratuity were also included. This was mine and my husband's first time at Avize and after reading all the accolades and hearing our epicurean friends hype it up for so long, we were really excited to dine here. Well, let's just say our experience left much to be desired and we left feeling like we didn't get what we paid for. The host who greeted us when we first arrived was welcoming and professional, but his manager, who was the main person running the show and pouring everyone's wine, was lacking all warmth of hospitality. My husband and I, along with our dining companions, got the distinct impression that this gentleman was irritated with us being there in his restaurant. I was amused to later find out that this gentleman is none other than the beverage & hospitality manager/part owner. We were immediately seated upon arrival and we were given menus, but we were not made aware that the "Welcome Beverages" on the menu were not included with our ticket price and had to be ordered at the bar. Not a problem, except by the time we found out, the winemaker and wine rep had begun their introductory speeches and it was too late to go get a drink at the bar. A restaurant of this caliber should inform guests when they arrive what the appropriate procedure is so their guests can have a seamless experience from the get-go. If the guests had been instructed to start a tab at the bar from the beginning, that would have put more money in the bartender's pocket too. My husband and I had originally purchased three tickets for this event, but our third had to cancel after we had already confirmed our reservation. We did not ask for a refund, but we did ask if it was possible to still get our friend's allotted portion of everything since we had already paid for it and the food had already been prepped by the restaurant. Our query didn't just get rejected, it went entirely unacknowledged, as if we had been asking a brick wall. For a wine dinner, we were served a surprisingly paltry amount of wine. As in, 2 full glasses of wine all day. Me and the other guests actually looked at our glasses like "is this even 2 ounces of wine???" Ask me to buy a case of $$$ wine after only 2 glasses of wine all evening, the answer's gonna be no. Ask me after 6 glasses of wine, the answer will be "swipe it on the Amex!" Throughout the evening, there was a breakdown in communication between the front of house and back of house and, ultimately, we the guests suffered. The disconnect resulted in the food and wine pairings being inappropriately timed so it was difficult to enjoy the food and the wine together. Remember, we were only served a small splash of wine for each course, so when the wine would be poured 15 minutes before the accompanying course, we would have to ration the wine so we could have something when the food arrived. Oftentimes when the food arrived, we only had a sip (if anything) to enjoy with it. In the end, my husband and I spent an extra $800 on cocktails for our table to tide us over and keep the conversation flowing. Half of the guests were female, but there was a distinct dearth of female staff and it affected the maintenance of the ladies room. In the middle of dinner, we were already down to half of a single roll of toilet paper for two stalls. Yours truly had to divvy up the roll so no one would be caught sans toilet paper in the next stall. I have to give credit where credit is due - the food itself was on point and flawlessly executed. The flavors and presentation were imaginative and the quality of the ingredients was incomparable. When it was time for the next course, all the food came out at once and not a single table was left waiting on a course. The cocktails were delicious and once we ordered, the bartender kept the drinks coming so quickly they didn't even have a chance to water down. The servers and support staff were on their A-game. Our silverware was replenished in a timely manner and the descriptions of each course were clearly and enthusiastically delivered. I'm not some Buckhead Betty who is out of touch with the reality of working in a restaurant. My husband and I have spent two decades in the hospitality industry in a variety of roles in both front and back of house. We have passed the sommelier exam. We know what it is to give hospitality and we know how much it takes to put on the show day in and day out. This isn't our first rodeo. Do better, Avize. Atlanta has too many wonderful restaurants for people to spend their hard-earned money where they will be treated with warmth and generosity. I wanted to kind of scoff at the idea of a modern alpine cuisine. I'm an idiot, this was my best restaurant experience of 2025, and a must try or die for any foodie in ATL. We were meeting old friends at the bar before dinner and we accidentally walked into the main dining room. They didn't tell us where to go, they personally escorted us through a back door. Overall the service is world class and Michelin worthy. The staff is very friendly, adorable and warm. There is a bar in the restaurant, but there is another bar for light snacks and drinks in a separate space. The separate bar is more bright and chic, while the main restaurant is dark and cozy. This is incredible double date spot as you will want to try everyone's dish. We had the ravioli, haystack smoked duck, deer tartare and the "quit jerkin my gherkin" cocktail. We paired each item we ordered with the wine suggested. I was blown away with how affordable the wine pairings were. 8 bucks for a half glass of wine with each item. The wine pairing for the deer tartare was the best wine I have ever had. I got my neighborhood wine shop to order me some ($22). If you see Zweigelt "Kieselstein," Claus Preisinger on the menu, order it. It is the most unique wine I have ever had. My favorite dish was the wild mushroom ravioli. The deer tartare was refreshing and light. The haystack smoked duck tasted like southern bbq. The gift from the chef was so unique, tucked inside an egg shell with truffles and whatever. It was indescribably good. My cocktail "Quit jerkin my gherkin" was so refreshing and tasty. You'll just giggle yourself silly reading the cocktail names. Note the cocktails are different in the bar than the main dining room, but you bet a place with this kind of service doesn't mind making an exception. Go on the website before and read about the restaurant and remember what the owner looks like. He came by our table and I made sure to tell him how much I liked his wine pairings. He gave us the whole story about the wine and why that wine was so meaningful to him. He was the sommelier at Bacchanalia, so the guy is an encyclopedia on wine. Overall a Michelin level experience, with food that is incredibly detailed and inventive. Get the half glass wine pairings! A great spot for a double date or a romantic celebration. Avize. I honestly felt like Dale after he got into Kahn's nephew's car in a paranoia induced dysphoria and ended up thinking he was stuck in the future just outside of Arlen Texas. In a way, my experience at Avize was very similar but much more positive. When I left, I was firmly convinced I was back in New York at Gabriel Kreuther.. not in what used to be a scrapyard in West Midtown Atlanta. Avize does Alsatian food extremely well. And also leverages minimal and tasty levels of molecular gastronomy to make the food truly stand out. What shocked me about this place is just how complex and sophisticated the flavor profiles were. It is easily on par with 2 Michelin starred European restaurants. The rabbit terrine blew me away. The caviar course (with crème fraise stuffed profiteroles) left me gasping for air in a fit of ecstasy. The drinks (especially the alpine swizzle) could not be improved upon even if you got all the former staff at Pegu Club in a room and locked the door and forced them to come up with improvements. I ordered the "Happy Meal," which came with a martini, Caesar salad, and truffle fries (honestly, 10/10 combo). We also tried the chicken tenders which tasted as good as the Chili's Honey Chili Chicken Crispers There's street parking and a nearby structure, so parking was easy. I went to the bar side of Avize (bar Avize) to try their viral $20 all you can eat caesar salad, truffle fries, and martini. The ambience: It is a quaint space so don't try to come with a huge party because it is mostly seating for 2-4 per table unless you want to sit outside. They also had the patio doors open which defeated the purpose of having air conditioning on a 90 degree atlanta day, so I have to dock a star for that because I was sweating and swatting a fly by the end of my meal. The bad: ordering was annoying-- you have to do it on your phone and it refreshes constantly so you end up having to make a new tab. The good: baby that salad and fries were 10/10!! The salad is not a traditional caesar and it does contain broccoli so if you're not a broccoli/kale fan this is not for you. But I loved it and the fries were salty and fresh and they really bring you as much as you want. I think I had 4 salads and 4 orders of fries and they were all delicious. The martini is not endless (you only get one with the special and it cannot be subbed for anything else) but it is a delicious martini. Overall, y'all have to try this happy hour!! Walked in and the hostess immediately sat us you walk in behind the curtain and we were surprised by a giant space, beautifully decorated. My wife and I had anniversary dinner planned. The menu was very good at highlighting the key parts of dishes if you weren't 100% sure what they were, you atleast knew you'd like them from the description, our server was very knowledgeable the service staff worked as a team to keep the table cleared, fill waters run food, even saw managers running drinks and serving food or wine. The service went above and beyond, Taurean described the wine varieties so well, extremely knowledgeable and just elevated the experience that much more. To top it all off the food matched foh service and was above and beyond, they started you with a fun amuse that came in an egg shell, we got elk tar tar, trout cru and the flammkuchen. We got pairings for the elk tar tar and trout cru they paired perfectly, all dishes were seasoned and executed perfectly. They brought out pretzel bread and house made butter before brining out our entrees; bolognese and American Wagyu strip and couldn't overlook the cabbage side vegetable, we opt to get pairings with these as well. Pairings again over the top, but the entrees themselves were insanely delicious. Finished up with the Mont Blanc, dessert menu wasn't extensive but I think as long as you are making perfectly executed desserts it doesn't matter and it seems they did just this. Dessert was amazing, when you don't finish a dish they box it and you pick it up at the host stand which was really convenient and not something we had experienced. All and all this would be in my top three of best meals of all time and I'd have to think really hard on if it's not number one. Starting at the end. We walked out with another couple and the wife asked "what did you think?" My wife said "very disappointing ". And they agreed. Which led to a shared set of observations including unfriendly service, food too salty to eat (they took their whole meal home in to go bags to not be rude. We were less thoughtful.), and confusion as to why this was an "Alpine" restaurant. We were both really mad at the NYTimes who put this restaurant on their top 50 in the US list. I would not put them as top 50 in Atlanta. Was not even thr best restaurant on the street (Miller Union is great.). My wife made the observation that the restaurant must have one hell of a publicist, because they did not get on that list for their food. Booo, NYTimes. Ok, the actual meal. The amuse was interesting. Not sure I loved it, but points for creativity. My wife ordered the pumpkin gnocchi and the lamb. The waiter had to come back on two separate occasions to tell us they were out of each of them. I had the trout appetizer which was fine. Wife wound up with the dandelion salad, which was also ok. Entrees were much worse. My halibut was so salty that I could not finish it. My mouth was kind of burning. Wife had the carrot bolognese. I thought it was interesting, but a little went a long ways. She did not care for it. We had the cauliflower as a side, which I liked and she did not. And then we had this terrible potato, cheese and bacon thing that was just a mess. All of those things are delicious and the kitchen totally messed them up. The desserts were pedestrian as hell. Like Creme Brulee and Tiramisu. It was an alpine restaurant and the food was distinctly Italian. Desserts, doubly so. Should have put a molten chocolate cake other dessert menu, just to make the other dishes feel at home: Other notes: the Som had words with our waiter, who, up till that point had been doing a great job. Whatever was said kind of took the steam out of our waiter and he became much less attentive. My note here is that a fine dining restaurant, I don't want to see how the sausage is made. You have a problem with a staff member, talk about it somewhere where I can't see or hear it. Really ruined an already sub par experience for me. Also on the Som, my wife got a glass of white wine in the middle of the meals. He literally poured it while looking around. Could not have been less interested in her reaction to the wine. Which was not positive. When she told him the wine was not great. He finished the pour and walked away. I asked my wife if she wanted me to say something and she said she would talk to the Som. As we left, he clearly walked away from us. All in all, just a crap job. Go to Atlas or Lazy Betty or Miller Union. Actually, you will have a better meal if you go to Miller Union and just order the chicken. Really. It is great. read more
