It had been about a year since I'd been to Denny's Latin Cafe on Overseas Highway in Key Largo, and…read moreI decided it was time to make the trip back to what I've previously called the best Cuban food north of Havana. I walked in and was greeted warmly, and within minutes I was reminded why I remembered this place so well. It's authentic. No gimmicks. No trying too hard. Just good Cuban food. Since breakfast is clearly one of their superpowers, I went with the breakfast burrito loaded with eggs, cheese and potatoes. Wow. "Delicious" doesn't really do it justice. The eggs were perfectly seasoned, the potatoes had that beautiful crispness, and then they brought out their jalapeño hot sauce. I put some on the burrito and immediately asked, "Do you bottle this?" Yeah. It was that good. We also had the steak and eggs, and they nailed that too. Perfectly runny eggs next to a juicy, flavorful flank steak. Exactly what breakfast is supposed to be. A year later, the verdict hasn't changed. Yeah, this is the real deal. I still maintain that Denny's Latin Cafe serves the best Cuban food north of Havana. Five stars. And if somebody knows where I can get a bottle of that jalapeño sauce, we need to talk.

We come to the Keys every year for lobster season, and even though this café requires making an…read moreextra drive and a U-turn to get to, it's always worth it. It's become one of our annual traditions. The restaurant is a great size with plenty of seating. You can grab a seat at the bar if you want to enjoy breakfast there, or choose from one of the many tables throughout the restaurant. During our three mornings in the Keys, we never actually sat down to eat. Instead, we stopped in each morning for a café con leche and a few pastries to take back to the villa where we were staying. Everything was fresh, delicious, and the perfect way to start the day. The service is always friendly, the atmosphere is welcoming, and it's one of those places we genuinely look forward to visiting every year. If you're looking for a great breakfast stop in the Keys, this place is definitely worth the extra drive.

The appetizer was excellent, but the main courses were a major disappointment. I was in the mood for a hogfish sandwich, and Hobo Cafe puts its own twist on it with a Parmesan-crusted fish. Unfortunately, the combination didn't work for me. My wife ordered the lobster and shrimp Po' Boy, and we counted only two tiny pieces of lobster and about three and a half shrimp. The sandwich was covered in cheese and lettuce, which seemed to make up for the lack of seafood. The portions and execution were disappointing, especially considering the price. On the positive side, the inside of the restaurant is beautifully decorated and has a really nice atmosphere, which is quite different from the outside. Unfortunately, this was a first and last visit for us. I really wanted to enjoy this place, but the main courses simply didn't deliver.

AWFUL customer service. I called around 11 AM on a weekday to place a pickup order and was met with…read moreunnecessarily curt and rude service on the phone. We ordered five wraps and a sandwich, but were informed that an 18% gratuity would automatically be added due to the "large order." This was actually two separate orders placed together for convenience--should we have just called twice instead? Regardless, we agreed to the charge. When I arrived to pick up the order, it took twice as long as the time we were told on the phone, resulting in a lot of waiting. The in-person service was also brusque and unfriendly. To top it off, the food was incorrect: the mini Cuban sandwiches were turkey instead of the pork advertised on the menu. Why an automatic gratuity charge was added to a pickup order was already surprising, but I could have possibly overlooked that had the service not been so unpleasant and the food had been true to what was advertised on the menu. Sadly, I can't recommend this place and won't be returning, not even for pickup. It felt like they were annoyed to have any orders at all. With the service they exhibited, I'm honestly shocked they're still in business.

Most of the ingredients are local and house made, and some of the produce is grown onsite or nearby. Their coffee drinks are smooth and inventive (tarro root latte, anyone?) and there are SO many items on the menu one could visit multiple times a day for months without even beginning to tire of the options. After much review and deliberation I ordered an acai bowl - unmodified, which comes standard with vanilla almond granola, strawberries, bananas, pineapples, and toasted coconut. My dining companion dressed hers up with almond butter, chia seeds, and coconut nectar drizzle. Pricing is reasonable for house made, vegan magic, and there is plenty of outdoor seating in the shade, perfect for settling in to enjoy one's chosen delights. I do wish they offered self-serve water, rather than just bottled water, as it would be nice to save a little plastic. Other than this one wrinkle, Seaside Eatery is hands-down a must-visit vegan dining destination.

My husband had the frito mixto appetizer -- fried calamari with fried shrimp and fried zucchini -- as his entree. It came with a small container of tomato sauce for dipping. The portion was large. It looked quite good. For dessert, I had a slice of torta della Nonna. It is one of my favorite Italian desserts. It was listed on their website, but not on their menu, so I was happy to see they had it. Imported from Italy, it was exactly as it should be. And a nice light, but not too sweet dessert.
