Fantastic Punjabi burritos, very quick service. Cash and Venmo only. Good outdoor seating.

I tried something different, mustard green with tofu (one piece-maybe that's normal for adding chicken?) and with curried chicken from my usual but wish I stuck to my jerk chicken although I still need to try the pumpkin curry again. All the little side flavors on the plate are delicious- the chutney and yogurt sauce and the bonus- I was not cooking. One weird pice of chicken- can't bite through, my husband had the same-that is one thing we really get bummed about when ordering out, but with papadums and the 2 plates of food to go was $41. The service was fast. Ambience is small inside cozy and chill if u are outside. There is a stern vibe always- that can't totally relax into too friendly. I feel like the vibe in Sausalito is more friendly but it has been a while and that is a restaurant space. I decided to try this place reading everyone's recent comments, slashing their ratings. I appreciate this place for its diverse offering in this town but in this economy- it does feel a bit pricey for a to go plate. We found it to have little flavor and Not good. It was partially frozen, maybe that is why? Anyways, definitely would not to recommend it. I would not recommend this place. The food quality was poor: very greasy, mostly rice with very little meat. The lamb was ground meat instead of actual chunks, which was disappointing. They should state it in the menu. The pumpkin lamb dish tasted like canned pumpkin puree with ground lamb. The food was so greasy that it actually left my throat feeling irritated afterward and I didn't even finish it. Cleanliness was also a concern. The kitchen area was very dark. The woman handling service (possibly the owner) was sitting near the kitchen bare feet crossed legged. She prepares the orders, handles checkout. Customer service was particularly problematic. There was no working payment system - no receipts, credit card system, and their Venmo wasn't functioning properly. She insisted on me leaving a credit card number because Venmo didn't work. Payment should be secured first especially if systems aren't reliable and she seemed to be aware of it. When I pointed it out and asked why these systems weren't available, she just said "I know I know". Perhaps this was just on my account but overall my experience with food and payment was misleading. read more

Came here after a long hike at Mt Tam, and wow the food here really hits the spot! My friend has been here a couple of times before and recommended I try the mustard green tofu burrito. There is a blend of so many flavors inside: the mustard greens, tofu, fruit chutney, rice, pickled carrot, etc. Each bite is savory, rich, and fulfilling. The clever usage of Indian bread around to hold it all together is such a good decision/idea! I've had Indian Pizza before, but haven't ever had an Indian burrito. Avatars Restaurant does just the right twist on a classic staple! Low key going to plan future hikes to Mt Tam just so I can come back here to try more of the burritos and the plates. Heads up: cash or Venmo only! And the seating inside is limited, but creates a nice cozy vibe. Service was quick, and you could tell from the interactions with the customers that this place is a beloved hometown classic as well as a worthwhile stop for those passing through. read more

First of all, the sign outside the restaurant says "Avatar's Punjabi Burritos." I stopped by here this afternoon, because I was looking for parking for a sandwich shop when I spotted this place and thought, "That sounds better." The ambiance is really cute, like most mom and pop shops in this tiny mountain biking beach town. A couple of indoor seats, and a few more outside. Kind of Davis meets Santa Barbara vibes. When I walked in, a man in the kitchen waved, so I waved back. He pointed to the side of the restaurant. I thought he was gesturing for me to come in through a side entrance or order at a window. I looked around for a moment, confused, before I noticed a woman watching me. "Oh!" I said. "Sorry, I didn't see you there." "How can I help you?" "Can I just get a curried chicken burrito?" The total was around $15. She said that she would have to run my card through her Sausalito shop. I said that was fine, thinking she just meant the name would say Sausalito. She picked up the phone and called someone to give them my card information. A little sketch. As she was doing this, with the phone balanced on her shoulder, she was using both hands to put together my burrito. It was pretty much done by the time she finished the phone call. I said, "That was fast, thanks," and took it outside. She didn't say anything. It's so weird being around city people after living in a national park for the past year... I took the burrito out to my car, and tried to eat it with the foil still wrapped around the bottom. Two heavy pieces of foil did not stop a good quarter cup of curry sauce splattering all over my clothes. I changed my shirt, dumped the burrito into a bowl, and went back inside for a fork. This was nowhere near a "burrito." It would be a stretch to call it a wrap. It was not something you could eat with one hand while driving, or even with both hands without a fork. The flavor was pretty decent. VERY greasy, but good flavor. There wasn't much chicken, but it was good. The veggies and sauce all had good fresh flavors. If I ate here again I would definitely opt for a rice or dinner plate instead. Edited to add that something funky did happen with the card situation. I was originally overcharged by $10, but then after I posted my Yelp review the next day, I got a separate charge for a $10 refund from Avatar's. I called my bank for clarification. They said that they had also double charged me, but then fixed it. Taking payments via an incompetent associate at a remote location and then not offering a receipt and then "accidentally" charging the wrong amount but then fixing it after a review is posted seems pretty sketch... If you choose to pay with card here, make sure you watch your charges carefully. read more

Yummy burritos with an Indian cuisine twist. Yes, they offer the same meals in plates instead of burritos as well, but I got the burrito! They only accept cash or Venmo, no credit card! Got the curried pumpkin burrito with curried lamb and a curried lamb burrito. I was not expecting ground lamb for the meat, I was hoping it would be shredded lamb at least. However, the curry did not disappoint, lots of flavor and good portion of meat. I felt the burrito was missing something, like a fresh flavor or crunch. While eating the burrito, I thought it would be great to have some type of crunch like fresh or pickled radish inside. To my surprise, there were some pickled carrots way at the bottom of the burrito, for both burritos. Also, would have been great to have some fresh herbs or a cream sauce to go with the burrito, that would make it 5 stars for me! We tried the curry lamb burrito, curry lamb burrito with sweet potato, the roasted eggplant burrito, and the blackened veggie burrito with salmon. All of the burritos were similar in profile: flavorful but mostly one-note. The lamb was tender. The burritos had a lot of rice which hides the other ingredients a bit. The fruit chutney was a nice addition in terms of sweetness and texture variation. But the burritos needed yogurt (we didn't see any) and cilantro or something to offset the singular curry taste. read more

We sat outside with our dog, and enjoyed hot chai, papadum, carried chicken with vegetable and curried lamb with smoked eggplant. The plates were beautiful, as well as delicious and a little spicy. It was just the right amount to eat without having to bring a cooler and take food home. Highly recommend the food, friendly woman, and choice of indoor or outdoor seating. I haven't been to Avatar in over a year. I was a little disappointed. I walked in at about 6:30 on a Saturday. I heard the owner tell the customer ahead of me that she wou only accept Venmo or cash. Avatar's is probably one of the best restaurants I've visited in the bay area since a long time. If anyone is visiting Sausalito/Marin County, this is a must visit - I cannot stress enough! It is a quaint joint very close to the Sausalito boardwalk. We were hosted by Mr Ashok who was very excited to know that we are vegetarians and offered to decide what we would like the most and we loved the whole spread! The whole spread was vegan, and very light yet flavorful- Saag tofu was actually made with leaves of sweet potato plant which was mind blowing. The enchiladas had a taro filling, and were topped with curry sauce which had an amazing balance of flavors The ravioli was stuffed with tofu and methi, and the sauce was nice and tangy. We were extremely happy with the personal attention we got, and since the restaurant wasn't super crowded, we were served pretty fast. read more

The plate for my kids was not properly cooked similar to other reviews posted here. She asked me to sit down as I was standing to read the menu. Strange behavior, but I was put off after I saw she was much warmer, kind and nice to her Caucasian clientele but visibly rude to me - seems she has a different attitude towards Indians. Tam ventured to this place for some hot chai and some food recommended by my hiking buddy. Tucked in a quite street in downtown with outside patio dining options, the quick service and food was tasty. Although to my palette, spice level is little mild catering to local community. I had their salmon plate with rice, my friend had special roti and mixed veg curry. Had nice brief convo with owner Ashok about recent celebrity cricket sports players guests from India (Sunil Gavaskar, Kirmani, and others) and about politics in India. Delicious!!! Quick, friendly service, great location. It's a messy "burrito" made from what I believe is makki di roti, loosely wrapped around a delicious, in my case, roasted eggplant and lamb curry with rice. Ugh. So good! I visited Avatar's with a group of friends after a hike in Mt. Tam because a few in our group had been there previously and highly recommended it. The staff were very accommodating and were able to seat our group of five without much of a wait. The ambiance was pretty standard, but nice and warm on a cool night. Our server was very kind and explained the menu to us, but also emphasized that we could kind of "DIY" a meal if we wanted to. We shared the vegetarian samosa plate and paratha with chutneys. I had two Pubjabi enchiladas, one with beef and one with chicken. It was fine, but nothing to write home about. I think that the menu is very creative, and I like that they blend cuisines that are not typically fused, but to me the food was just ok. I would recommend to try if you are interested in the novelty aspect, but I probably won't go again. read more

We passed this spot on the way to the Mill Valley Library on a beautiful Saturday afternoon. My roommate and I, being Indian, knew we had to stop there for lunch hehe. They have limited outdoor seating and indoor, however I suggest the outdoor when it's nice out. The owner and staff were very friendly and nice. They take venmo or cash only I believe, so be prepared for that. We all got the curried chicken burrito, which is basically chicken curry mixed with rice, chickpeas, and some veggies all wrapped in a roti. It tasted very homemade and authentic in my opinion, a very satisfying meal for lunch! Portions were decently sized, I definitely had leftovers. You order in the front and they deliver your food to you if you sit on the outdoor patio or you can take it to go. I ordered the curried sweet potato which was delicious and instead of a tortilla, it's wrapped in roti bread. They have a lot of options for drinks like Snapple, apple juice, bottled water and sodas, my fiancé and I both got orange cream sodas. If you just want water you can ask for a cup for free. These were a delicious end to our hike on the Dipsea Trail. They're right at the entrance along a quiet street near downtown. We ordered the chicken and lamb burritos. The "tortilla" was thick and delicious and the filling was flavorful. It was enough for two meals! I also ordered a rose lassi but should have stuck to the mango. Was I disappointed? No, I was 'appalled' by the exorbitant price ($14) and the poor quality of the burrito. The burrito consists of a poorly packaged roti wrap with some not so great mildly spiced eggplant or meat with rice. I can bear bad customer service/ ambiance if the food is even half way decent. Mind you, I didn't expect bay area Indian food standard although it's priced that way. The concept sounds decent but the execution is unfortunately a huuuge letdown. There's so many flavours you could experiment with in an Indian burrito but alas. Oh and one more thing, it's only cash or Venmo- FYI.
