I had the pleasure of dining at Madcap last year for my birthday. I'd been eyeing the restaurant for a while, intrigued by their fusion of French and Japanese cuisines--because honestly, who doesn't love that combination? What I didn't realize at the time was the sheer pedigree behind it. It turns out Madcap is Michelin-rated, and Chef Ron Siegel is a celebrity chef. A Top Chef alum who headlined at legendary spots like The French Laundry and Michael Mina. Ironically, I didn't learn any of this from a food blog or Yelp. I heard it from my dentist in Vallejo. Talk about a random convo! As for the food, Chef Siegel's creations are pure joy--a celebration of culinary genius that feels genuinely divine. It's the kind of meal that evokes deep emotion; it really is magical. I can honestly say it's the best restaurant in Marin, Point Reyes included. We paired our meal with a beautiful bottle of sake by Pharrell Williams (yes, you read that right), and to top off an already incredible evening, we got to meet Chef Siegel and take a group photo with him. What a cool dude! Inside the restaurant, the decor was refined and classy, featuring rich dark wood accents and curated artwork. What a delightful fusion experience--not only of French and Japanese ethnic cuisines, but also of artistry. Unlike the dictionary definition of "madcap" -- wildly impulsive or chaotic -- the exquisite dining experience at this Michelin-starred restaurant is anything but. My experience was calm, intentional, playful, and deeply refined. After living in the San Francisco Bay Area since 2005, I had just learned about Madcap and was thrilled to celebrate a friend's birthday there. From the moment we were greeted by Kim at the host stand -- warm, poised, and genuinely welcoming -- we felt special. Anticipation built immediately. Our four-course prix fixe menu was printed on artisanal, handmade-feeling paper -- textured, elegant, and thoughtful. With a minimalist design aesthetic, every detail serves a purpose and is beautiful in its restraint. The luxury here is subtle but palpable. Large, colorful, whimsical paintings line the walls -- one even reminded me of Jane Fonda as Barbarella. The chopsticks and flatware are distinctive and sculptural. Nothing feels accidental or unintentional. From a 15-page beverage menu, I selected a 2023 Raventós i Blanc Blanc de Blancs Cava from Conca del Riu Anoia, Catalunya. Crisp, celebratory, and the perfect opening note. If you might assume "small courses" won't satisfy, think again. I left completely full. Welcome Snacks Before the first official course, we were surprised with a small welcoming assortment. I couldn't name each component, but they were colorful, beautifully balanced, and layered in flavor and texture -- playful yet precise. A lovely crescendo into what followed. First Course Nicasio Valley egg, lemongrass spuma, pine nuts. We chose to add the optional Black Périgord truffle. When pierced with my spoon, the bright yellow yolk blended like a brushstroke into the white of the egg. The spuma (an airy, savory foam created by aerating a sauce) added a delicate citrus-herbal lift to the richness of the egg. The pine nuts brought delightful contrast texture. Oh, and that exquisite toast! Elegant and harmonious. The delicately-shaved truffle provided a heavenly mouth-feel. Second Course Winter salad, shima aji, orange olive oil or Sunchoke tortelloni, spinach, shiitake, thyme jus One companion chose the vibrant winter salad -- stunning in color and textures including shima aji, a premium Japanese fish. I chose the sunchoke tortelloni. Although I'm usually not a fan of al dente pasta, here it worked beautifully to contrast the creamy filling. The green-tinged spinach tortelloni were visually striking and balanced by the earthy shiitake and fragrant thyme jus. Third Course Mount Lassen trout, abalone & carrot risotto, lobster cream or Flannery beef ribeye, artichoke, Banyuls, black garlic We all chose the trout. The fish was executed perfectly -- caramelized, crisp exterior, yet it flaked effortlessly into large, tender pieces with the fork. The carrot risotto leaned slightly sweet for my palate, though beautifully textured. The tiny slivers of abalone, however, were surprisingly overcooked and chewy. The lobster cream had a thinner, almost broth-like consistency and didn't meaningfully elevate the dish. For reference, Banyuls (used in the ribeye preparation) is a French fortified wine like port from the Roussillon region that creates deep, slightly sweet reductions that complement richer meats. Fourth Course Shiso panna cotta, pineapple vanilla gelée. The panna cotta was softly set, cool, and subtly sweet -- a lovely, light finish. The Japanese mint herb of shiso was subtle. The crumble beneath added wonderful contrast and texture. A small piece of pineapple was firmer than expected, though the overall composition remained balanced and refreshing. With it, I had a decaf Americano. It was so smooth and flavorful I drank it black -- and enjoyed every sip. Post-dessert course We were pleasantly surprised with a pearlized white box of what appeared to be handmade confections: caramel, a sugar-dusted berry gelée, and a ganache-filled chocolate truffle. The unexpected welcome bites and post-dessert confections made the four-course prix fixe feel even more generous and thoughtfully orchestrated. Madcap is an experience of delightful visual artistry and intentional composition. The overall execution, ambiance, and hospitality created a memorable evening. P.S. While I typically eat gluten- and dairy-free, making those substitutions would have fundamentally changed the menu. For this celebratory evening, I chose not to alter the chef's composition. I had wanted to come here for a long, long time but being that its in San Anselmo, it's definitely difficult for a random week night. My gf surprised me for my birthday by taking us here and we had such a fun adventure because there was some kind of festival going on in downtown San Anselmo which this was quite close to, so we got a chance to walk the downtown and explore all that the town had to offer before our GNO dinner date. We were one of the first to be seated, and the space is mad sexy (mad cap... mad sexy ... get it? har har ...) I loved the friendly and relaxed atmosphere but the upscale food. It makes you feel like you can chat and talk at ease and really get into catching up with someone vs a place that's a little more stiff where you don't want to speak too loudly. We loved almost every single dish except for one that had a particularly OVERPOWERING amount of fennel. It was a rather odd flavor combination which put both of us off, and it seems like almost all of our neighboring patrons felt similarly. Outside of that, the menu is delicious and super great value. We love to try out fine dining restaurants whenever we celebrate birthdays and since this is our 10th yr anniversary, we decided to go to a Michelin star restaurant. We live in RP so we chose to go closer and found out that MadCap is in San Anselmo. Its 11-course tasting menu! Food is amazing! My favorites are the honey nut squash tortellini, the slow cooked egg and the fish dishes. Service is also amazing but I put 4 stars because I feel like the staff esp in Michelin restaurants can be more a bit enthusiastic about the food and how they can describe it to the guests. Sometimes, having to mention their personal favorite and their knowledge about the food make the guests enticed and excited about what they will eat. The ambiance is warm and cozy but we were seated beside a group of men who were a bit louder so me and my husband, we couldn't really hear each other well. There were more seats for 2 people in a little corner were other couples were and I wished we could have sat there. Its no biggie but I think its good for people to know so they can request it next time. Desserts are amazing as well! I probably will go back to try their next tasting menus in the future. read more

I don't always have a car, but when I do, I like to use it (to go places I wouldn't otherwise go.) I booked Madcap because it was a Michelin star restaurant in the North Bay and I wanted to explore! It was easy to get a reservation a week or two in advance. It was hard to do the week of. Last-minute, I had to change my time to an earlier one so I called and they were very accommodating. Madcap is located on a busy street but they have a free parking lot. When we walked in around 5:15pm, it seemed like the staff were all gathered around each other talking waiting for customers to arrive. We were the first customers there and it slowly and surely filled up with girlfriends and couples. Service was very good and my boyfriend got the wine pairing and I sampled some. One sake came with the pairing as well. We enjoyed some courses more than others--standouts included - Shrimp hasami, tempura and satay - Jidori egg slow cooked topped with toma cheese, black truffle - Caramelized sunchoke tortelloni, thyme jus and broccolini - Seared stonington sea scallop topped with pork belly, trumpet mushroom puree and trumpet mushrooms - Seared Sonoma duck breast, cauliflower puree and purple cauliflower, carrot curry Everything was fresh. There were some unique dishes and some risks were taken--some paid off, but some didn't. There's only 1 bathroom. I like the dark decor. My friends and I dined here to celebrate Galentine's Day. Our reservation was at 5:15 pm. At first, we thought they were still closed due to the large curtain by the entrance and dark/dim decor and lighting. However, once we passed the curtains and saw the staff, we were directed to our table quickly. There was an 8-course Valentine's prix fixe menu. I could not eat raw fish or meat, and the staff clarified my dietary restrictions before serving the food, which I greatly appreciated. All the dishes were delicious, but our favorite was the dry-aged flannery ribeye steak. It had a beautiful crust and was perfect medium rare. It was so earthy, and the meat was tender. I could go back here just for their ribeyes. Overall, my friends and I enjoyed our visit to Madcap. Although we spent almost three hours here, it didn't feel that long. Probably the best Michelin place I've been too. Note, I prefer the taste of food much more than presentation, uniqueness etc. this place had so many wonderful hits that made it stand out. I'm vegetarian and they have a veg friendly option which is appreciated. Ingredients felt very high quality, fresh and flavorful. The favorite notes were the bao, the peanut sauce accompanying a small bite, and also this wasabi flavor sauce accompanying another small bite. I left content but could've had another dish or two to leave full. One complaint on the vegetarian menu is it's very fruit forward and not much protein incorporated. I would've appreciated either more veggies and protein or a lower pre-fix price point compared to the seafood offering to make it feel worth it. read more

Dining at Madcap is a great experience! Each dish is beautifully crafted while balancing creativity with impeccable technique. The presentation is artful and the ambience is intimate. The meal feels thoughtful and refined. Some dishes were fairly unique and quite tasty while some others felt just slightly lacking (still good, but didn't leave me as satisfied). We have been wanted to try here for a very long time and finally made it to celebrate my sister and aunt birthday. It's a beautiful quaint place with vibrant atmosphere. My family truly loved the experience but I just eaten at 7 Adams the night before and the menu was so similar mad ethe starch contrast of not hitting the mark a bit more obvious. The service was great food was good if you have nothing else to compare it to. Sadly it didn't cut it for an 5 stars exceptional meal, I know my family who live near by will come back but with SF offering of food choices it will be harder for me to say I would want to come back again. I have always loved Ron's cooking, so I chose Madcap to celebrate a friend's birthday. The food, the service, and the kindness of everyone at the restaurant were all truly wonderful, and we felt warmly taken care of throughout the evening. So I've been at this restaurant a couple times and it's always been good. The last time I went was quite off-putting. One of the individuals in the party had an allergy to eggs so we asked the person/staff if any accommodations be made for that dish and this person sarcastically said oh yes that chef loves doing that or it came off sarcastic. I have never experienced anything like that before and honestly if it was not possible that individual was fine with skipping that course. It's just so strange to have such reaction to a request which is clearly indicated on the madcap website. My partner and I dined here based on a recommendation of a local. Again this is definitely a place to experience for us and not a day to day dinner place. The tastings were just that, a tasting and beautiful. The experience is about 3 hrs + We asked to kindly box the last two items so we could leave, we had been there since 5:45pm and is was already 9:15pm. This is definitely a place to have a great conversation over and time to invest. The place is clean, only one bathroom for the entire establishment so there is a line to wash hands and wait during a three hour dinner. This is the Iron Chef winner Ron Siegel's restaurant. Set menu was excellent. Nothing too extravagant, so perfect for someone still getting into fine dining. I'm bummed to give Madcap 3 stars because I've heard so many great things about it from my friends but unfortunately several things fell short during my experience that I think would be good to share for constructive feedback. This was an 11 course dinner (12 if you count the bread plate) for $165 and I'm not sure that everything lived up to the value. To start with food, it's important to note that the first half of the menu up to the corn tortelloni are like super small bites. Everything felt kind of like an amuse bouche and took painfully long to come out. For example, we waited 16 minutes (from my photo roll) to transition from the ayu fish to the burrata with cracker plate, which was a bit surprising since the burrata dish isn't something that takes time to cook... it was a tiny scoop of cheese next to a sliced plum and cracker. The one standout of the smaller bites had to be the jidori egg. This was chef's signature dish and was absolutely delicious. The warm steamed egg reminded me of chawamushi and had a homey, slightly sweet flavor with bright orange yolk and delicious, buttery bread. For the other small plates, nothing really stood out to me. I do have to give props for this tempura-fried satay shrimp wrapped in a shisho leaf. I really loved that innovation and those flavors. Our table was also a bit surprised that in between the 4th and 5th course of small bites, we were given a plate of bread and butter. Since the plates were so small we joked that maybe this was the way for Madcap to make sure you left full... I did end up eating 2 slices because I truly was still hungry and it was taking a while for us to get the next courses. For some positivity, though, once we got to the corn tortelloni, the portions became a bit bigger. I for one really enjoyed the fresh, sweet corn tortelloni but did not like the flavor of the tarragon emulsion by itself. The sea bream, eggplant and noodle dish looked impressive and the sea bream was cooked to perfection- so crispy and nice. The dashi however was way tooo salty. Another standout dish to me was the liberty duck breast with pork belly. I love love loved the fattiness from the pork belly and the delicious duck over sweet potato (?) puree. Finally the ribeye was great as well and I enjoyed the delicate squash blossom. Desserts were also great. I feel like Madcap should offer a 4 course dinner and do the jidori egg, liberty duck, ribeye and hazelnut cake, because those were definitely the standouts! In terms of service, I also have to be a bit nitpicky here. We were never greeted by a specific waiter and didn't really know who was helping us during our dinner. The staff also never introduced themselves to us. The person who came to our table first just said "hello, do you have any questions about the menu? Would you like the supplemental caviar course?". It would've been nice to know his name, and hear a little bit more about the restaurant, the seasonal food highlights etc. I'm not sure if the kitchen was short staffed that night but timing was also a big hinderance to our meal. My whole table and I felt like it was taking a really long time to clear plates and bring out the next courses- especially when they came out to be just bites. Finally, I do appreciate that after I had called to let them know we were celebrating a birthday, they brought out a nice little birthday treat for our birthday person. I wish their reservation website had a place for us to indicate this instead of me having to call. Overall, the ingredients are high quality, but because of some of the hits and misses and service, I can't say I would come back. read more

Just checked out this restaurant since we heard a lot of good things about this place from our friends. It totally lived up to our expectations~ The chef's tasting menu changes very often since it highly depends on the seasonal ingredients' availability. For this round, a bunch of dishes used either peaches or tomatoes to pair with the main ingredients. We could also tell Chef Ron likes playing around with different kinds of fruits in the dishes. Very creative and refreshing! The dinner evolved from lighter snacks and appetizers to heavier main courses, then ended with not overly sweet desserts. Layers and layers of different flavors and textures were jumping on the palate. The entire menu was very well-thought-out and balanced. The tasting menu was $140 pp (with additional $30 for the caviar dish which we thought was definitely worth it). We both very much enjoyed this experience and every dish was such an adventure. Kicked off my husband's birthday weekend w/ this lovely meal. I must say, it was quite far w/ traffic and all coming from SF on a Friday evening. The meal had so many great pairings of flavor and textures that we really enjoyed. For the $125 price point, you get a well curated menu of beautiful dishes and quality proteins. I personally loved the fish w/ its crispy skin and gorgeous broth. Dessert was quite good. The ice cream that cake w/ the cake was creamy and the cake was spongey. We were quite full up until this point and asked to have the rest packed. However, we forgot to grab it on the way out so can't speak to the the rest of the goodies. read more

Having followed the career of Chef Ron Siegel since his win over Iron Chef Sakai, Chef Siegel opened his first restaurant, Madcap, which serves French cuisine with Japanese influences. I put it on my to-try list and after seeing it featured on CheckPlease!, it made my desire to dine here even more. Recently, we dined here for a birthday celebration. Reservations on made via Tock with a $100 deposit requirement. The reservation stated that the dining time is 2 1/2 hours. With a 5:45 reservation on a Friday, I was able to find street parking half a block away. Checking in with the hostess, she welcomed us and walked us to one of the two booths in the front room. That's when we noticed Chef Siegel standing there and we talked to him and got a picture with him. Our waiter was Troy, who was very personable as we engaged him in conversation during the course of the meal. The prix fixe tasting menu consists of 10 courses. Troy said the menu is fluid and courses can change based on what the Chef procures from farmers markets and local farmers. The courses this evening consisted of: Snacks - pork belly bao, smoked trout roe kabocha, thyme mushroom soup Cashew Cheese with Asian pear Shrimp hasami with satay Lobster with butternut squash A loaf of brickmaiden bread with butter was served. It was so good that we request another loaf. Apple, cardamom fennel salad Jidori egg with candycap mushroom crumble Shimi aji with concord grapes Mt Lasses trout with dashi Pine mushroom tortellini Dry-aged Flannery ribeye, vadouvan Passionfruit mousse over cake and, banana ice cream. It was a nice touch that caneles with a candle were brought out as well for the birthday celebrant. Mignardises - a little box of chocolates was provided at the end. The courses were brought out by Troy and two other servers. They described the dishes and they answered our questions about the courses. Once the server was not sure and she went to get clarification and came back with the answer. The dishes were beautifully plated in colorful stoneware dishes. The courses were delicious with my favorites being the shrimp hasami, jidori egg, shima aji and the smoked trout roe kabocha snack. Appreciate the upscale dining and intimate and casual setting. The friendly servers gave just the right amount of attention without the formality of some upscale restaurants. Our meal lasted exactly 2 1/2 hours! We had family from out of town visit, so what better way to celebrate than dinner at Madcap? Our dinner started immediately after sitting down because we had to finish in 2.5 hours to clear the table for the next seating. Every dish was beautiful. The plating was a work of art, and the pottery was gorgeous. My favorite dish was the slow cooked egg. It was creamy and so comforting paired with the buttery toast. I also loved the shiso ice cream, which was so refreshing. Every dish was flavorful. My only comment was that the same flavors were similar among many dishes. The dashi broth, yuzu, and radish were common, and though delicious, I was hoping for a broader range of flavors. Service was great. However, towards the end of the meal, we felt rushed to finish on time. We had 2 people with food allergies at the table, and although they asked about allergies and made accommodations, it was a little concerning that the modified dishes were served to the wrong people. We made sure to confirm with each dish. No allergic reactions that night, so yay! Overall, it was a great experience, and we had a wonderful evening. read more

It is very important to keep seafood fresh. The food is nicely arranged and presented. However, there was a not-so-fresh smell in one of the dishes that worried me, especially because the raw ingredients weren't cold enough when I put them in my mouth. I have plenty of experience eating raw fish in Japan and Asia, and that unpleasant smell should never be present in Michelin-starred restaurants, even if it's just a little bit. Running a restaurant and handling raw ingredients can be challenging. When chefs choose the menu, they need to be especially careful. The bread needs a little bit more salt or something. I should have asked these questions when I was at the restaurant instead of writing about it here, but I had other priorities for my evening. I am not intended to make restaurant look bad. Parking lot is small and full so we went around and parked in a residential neighborhood in the back of the restaurant and walked through a pedestrian bridge over a stream to get back onto Sir Francis Drake blvd. We were greeted immediately when we arrived and taken to a small table in the second dining room of the restaurant all the way in the back corner. My left shoulder was squished up against the fire extinguisher hanging on the wall behind me. Not a good spot to put an extinguisher especially because the tables are so small already and pushed up against the corner. I was not too comfortable the whole night. We had the set Valentine's Day menu. I made a note during the reservation and also via email that my husband doesnt eat seafood and I dont eat raw foods. Was disappointed to see the menu was the "standard" Valentine's day menu that everyone received. Small touches like menu changes makes a difference especially when you are charging $200/pp plus a mandatory 20% tip it came to over $500 for dinner. Yikes! Now the menu changes was noted but I was told, they didnt want to print separate menus for it. Got it. Food was not bad, many flavors. The menu starts of small and gradually increases to bigger portions. Even the bigger portions were pretty tiny but plenty of dishes and by the end of the night, I was stuffed. Some of my favorites were the chestnut soup, smoked pork belly bao, chilled dungeness crab and the ribeye. My least favorite was the sonoma duck breast, Im not a fan of duck so sent it back. The slow cooked egg was also not my favorite. Middle of dinner, I had a bad migraine come on. I dont know what it was. Maybe just being squished up against the wall or just a long drawn out dinner. We were there for 2.5 hours. I have no idea. Either way, it was a nice Valentine's dinner, we both enjoyed it a lot. Service was not bad, we had various people come serve us throughout the night. They continue to knock it out of the park. Been here a few times now, and last night was my favorite meal yet! They really nailed the Autumnal Marin flavors, integrated so uniquely into ever part of the meal. I love how they continuously reinvent seasonal aspects for the menu, all while staying within the bounds of a familiar flow. Feels comforting, welcoming, and unique every time we visit. Also love the little details - the ginkgo chips on the poke dish sent it over the top for me! Best restaurant in Marin. And the best deal you'll find on a tasting menu around the Bay. read more

A friend recommended this place to me - mentioning it was a Japanese/French tasting experience. The mix of cuisines were too intriguing to resist, so I found myself at Madcap a week later. It was definitely an enjoyable experience overall; from the cozy, intimate ambience, to the incredibly well designed & tasty courses topped off with impeccable service. My favorite dishes of the evening were the Stonington sea scallop & Somen, uni, oyster plant veloutė topped with caviar. Highly recommend if you're in the area - reservations are a must.
