Really disappointed. Came in on a Sunday morning, added our name to the list, and were seated quickly. However, nobody came to even greet us/bring us water/check-in. 3 tables seated AFTER us were helped, and the server didn't even come up to our table until we were getting up to leave (which was about 15 minutes after being seated). I understand places being understaffed, but a quick, "hey we're a little short-staffed here, but I'll be back to check on you as soon as I can!" Would've been great, but we were essentially ignored. I really hate to update my review from a few years negatively, but I must. Java has switched to table service instead of ordering at the counter. This really slows the process down. I stopped by for Sunday lunch, waited in line for several minutes, was not greeted. Then I was shown to my table. The Cuban is still good; today's soup was chicken noodle. However, as a solo diner, I was abandoned after my food arrived and the waiter did not check on me. I was given the check on their tablet, with defaulted 20% tip. I tipped it, bit frankly today's service did not deserve that. I visited in person a few years ago when they were still counter service, and unfortunately encountered the same lackadaisical service as the greeter was on their personal phone instead of assisting me. Still bomb food, but at this rate, stick to go and enjoy at home. If you live close like me, it's not that much more to do to go, and I refill my own water. What a shame; I know waitstaff have the hardest gig, but it is their literal job to greet their customers, check in, and refill drinks. Java is failing in the service area now. read more

Wanted breakfast before work and wife wanted to go to this staple. Surprised it wasn't too busy but drive thru was busy which I thought how good can food be if made this fast. Food was absolutely delicious with freshness. The eggs were not overnight with veggies, they were all fresh green and red pick with lush mushrooms and cheddar just shredded. Avocado was perfectly ripe. Exactly how I'd want it but again shocked at portions with sausages too which also fresh and juicy. Orange juice tasted freshly squeezed too. This place is perfect for breakfast or brunch. I had a super fresh and tasty omelet, and the portions were really generous. The staff was polite and helpful, explained everything on the menu. You can tell it's a popular spot, we got there around 10 a.m., and it was almost full, but we still found a table. The coffee was great too, smooth taste, not too much milk, just how I like it in the morning. We had such a good time. I think this might become our go-to breakfast place. Stood at the pick up location at the bar for at least 5 minutes before anyone addressed me. They weren't super busy. Didn't get a hello/how are you doing, just "have you been helped yet?". After I told them I was waiting for a to go order, another customer came up and was pleasantly greeted right away. Very weird. Breakfast quesadilla looked promising but didn't pan out. First off I want to highlight the service! We had a party of 7 coming in so I called to see if they took reservations and was told they do not (it's seat yourself) but that they could accommodate a party of 7. When we arrived, expecting a wait, they had actually held a table for us so we were seated right away! It was a nice surprise and great start to the meal. The food was good, I got the salmon Benedict and it was delicious; some of our sides got mixed up (potatoes instead of the fruit we ordered) but overall it wasn't a huge deal and everyone enjoyed their food. I liked the variety of mimosas also! The server was also very friendly and accommodating with the two children in our party, going to check the brand of apple juice for them lol! The menu is pretty standard diner food- small complaint from the husband that they only offer breakfast potatoes and not hash browns but that isn't unusual. read more

I've driven past this place several times and finally got to try it. I won't be back. The service is trash. We stood at the front to be seated for over 5 minutes without any acknowledgement from any of the numerous wait staff that walked by. It's not a big establishment, so a nod or a smile of recognition would not be a hard task. Coffees were warm, not hot, and decent at best. The matcha tasted like it came straight from dirt. Food, service and ambience was great, coming from a boomer that likes less noise and good conversation without hearing everyone else's. I had the smoked salmon, cream cheese and capers and my picky hubby had the Huevos Rancheros, he said it was different from the typical Mexican rancheros but he said it tasted excellent on tostadas. Really disappointing to see this place turn into an impersonal burn and churn restaurant. Husband and I used to come here every weekend but the customer service has become so bad we can't justify it. Most recent visit we stood at the front for 6 full minutes without a SINGLE staff member even acknowledging us. Not a nod, or a someone will be right without, or thanks for waiting. We stood there as 5 different staff members walked past or just diverted their eyes while working the bar. I understand how stressful serving is during busy shifts - but a simple acknowledgment would go a long way. Sadly, we won't be back. read more

I love Austin Java and go at least 3x a week. They even give bacon to our dogs! They have the best Spicy African Peanut Soup! I live for this and always get a cup when it is on the menu. Today, decided to splurge for the bowl of this goodness! The cup is $3 and the bowl is $6. They use the exact same cup for both the bowl and cup but "we fill it to the top for a bowl." Decided to have breakfast before heading back across the state and decided to try this place. The minute you walk in there is such a good vibe. It's much quieter than many other restaurants so it was easy to have a conversation. Everyone working was very friendly. The food came out fast. I got the migas and both my husband and son got the chicken and waffles. The migas were tasty and those beans were delicious! My son and husband loved their chicken, said it was crunchy and juicy. My husband really loved the cinnamon butter for the waffles. Bring you appetite because they are large portions. Austin Java used to be a go-to staple in my life back when they had more locations in town and would do live poetry readings some nights. I hadn't been to a location in years, and not since they opened this Menchaca location. This location is off a busy street, which can make getting into the parking lot hard. Add to that the fact that there are not a ton of spaces and it can get confusing which entrance is the drive-thru vs the parking lot. I recommend taking your time when approaching the business, until you've been there a couple times. Inside was diner chic, with a large bar/counter you order at for both dine-in and to-go. There are around six tables on the covered outdoor patio out front, but most of the table seating is indoors only. The breakfast quesadilla held up to my expectations from years ago (still massive in size and a good value for the price), even if prices have increased some. With drink, quesadilla, and to-go tip I was just under $20. The chai was not as remarkable as I remember it being, but still decent. I would definitely stop to get the quesadilla again, but would not go out of my way to do so, hence my 4/5 star rating. read more

This was one of our favorite places we visited in Austin! They have a wide variety of options, but we went with breakfast tacos since they were BOGO free on Tuesdays. The tacos were delicious and just the right amount of food. We also got drip coffee and a latte, and both were great. The ordering process was simple, and every staff member was so kind. They were hustling around keeping everything clean while serving customers. They really go the extra mile! It was quiet, but not too quiet. It's with decidedly mixed emotions that I leave this unfavorable review. I am a long-time customer of Austin Java, and I've grown increasingly dissatisfied with their service and food over the last year. In that time they've repeatedly changed their format, eventually settling on full table service. It really seems like they are flailing to find what works. The increased turnover and changes in service delivery model have resulted in sustained chaos. They get my coffee order about 1/3 of the time through the drive-through. A recent trip inside with my daughter had her waiting a ridiculous amount of time for her coffee order, only to have it delivered wrong...twice! She gave up and drank what they served, because we were done eating by this point. I just made a trip there this morning to get a specialty latte. I ordered it half-sweeet; they presumably made it 2x sweet instead. It was undrinkable. Their food offerings have always been hit or miss. The deli meat on the sandwiches seems below-par. The chicken and waffles is tasty, if they don't over-cook the chicken, which happens about half the time. The chilaquiles is delicious, especially if you add the pulled pork. Their burgers are flavorless, but their French fries are quite good. Their Caesar salad is good, but they slather entirely too much dressing on them. They have one of the better BLT's around, but glob on way too much mayo. I'm a local, and I want to love this place and see it succeed. But when you pay $7 for a coffee, it damn-well better be what you ordered, and come out in a reasonable time. Starbucks is nothing special, but at least they are consistent. read more

So a friend took me here a couple of weeks ago. I was super excited to be here since I absolutely love breakfast foods. My friend ordered our food and I went to the restroom. We assumed they had free coffee because it was by the water and sauces station out in the open. We asked the girl who looked like she was working the drive through, "where do we get the cups for the coffee?" She asks how many? I said two please! She brings the cups over to us but instead of giving them to us she looks at us and asked for our table number. My friend was the one who had it so she went to go get the number while I waited. This woman then yells at me to go get the table number she looked angry all of a sudden. I responded that my friend just went to get it. She then goes to the lady who took our order and shouts, very rudely and with an attitude from the other end of the restaurant to us: "If you want coffee you to need to pay for it! Otherwise there's free water right there!" As she still held the cups. No joke, everyone dining there turned around. I told her she didn't need to be rude and yell at us, it was our first time there and we assumed the black coffee was free. Then she huffed and puffed away angrily. (We had already had our coffee for the day she acted like we were trying to scam them out of a cup of black coffee 30 mins before closing). Our food came out super quick. We were sitting behind the little white gate that has the sauces and water so it was directly on our sides. Then right when we get our food another worker comes out to "clean" the area. She sprays the cleaner on both of us and possibly on our food through the little gate looking shelf. Not sure if this was intentional but it definitely felt like it after seeing the 3 girls giggling and laughing while walking by us plus the experience we just had. Both of our stomachs were also messed up all day. This was such a bad experience for us, I'll never go back. We were telling my friends bf and he was super annoyed too since he goes there a lot because it's close to his home. I wanted a coffee and the adorable and kind lady guided me to AJ. Well, the 2-in-1 bartender-barista was in an argument with a server over small change for a bill and totally ignored that two customers were waiting to order.
