Okrrr, cute Barley Bean. You have a lot going for ya. And for fans of coffee... and pastries and gelato and pizza ....and wine, beer, snacks, etc. Ya heard right. Barely Bean offers more than just beans - they have beer (hmmm, hence the name?!) and all of the aforementioned. My bestie Katie B and I were on a morning walk with furbabe Ron Bear and dropped in for some morning coffee. So many options, but I went for a alt milk latte. Drink was hot and warmed me up just right.

Popped in for a self date breakfast since my boyfriend was out with the boys and I didn't feel like cooking for myself. The restaurant is counter service so you are greeted by a barista as you enter and can place tour order promptly. Despite being mainly a coffee shop they offer a nice selection of breakfast and lunch options as well as several beers on tap. I ordered the brown sugar cinnamon myracle latte ($6.50) which was delicious! It was a great balance and perfect temp to drink when it came out. For brunch I ordered the Chicken & Waffles ($15) which came out quick, hot and fresh! I was surprised to see that the buttermilk fried chicken was actually a chicken patty and the spicy maple syrup just tasted like regular maple syrup but the meal was still enjoyable. I would say they should rephrase the menu description a bit to better manage expectations.

Stopped by for a quick lunch and got the chicken salad croissant sandwich and damn it was delicious! I love the croissant bread and the chicken salad was great. It comes with a side and I chose chips and got a bag of lays with my order. Cute outdoor patio space and some indoor seating as well. Service was quick - food came out in less than 5 minutes!

Always a delight. The baristas are so nice and helpful and willing to bring whatever recipe I come up with to life. They have both tables and a couch area and great WiFi. Round that out with pastries, a full lunch menu and wine and beer and there's no need to ever go anywhere else.

Barley bean is the best. Not only do they serve quality coffee, but their food is surprisingly very good. I ordered an omelet and it was high quality and served shortly after ordering. Today I ordered the Vanilla Pistachio Rose Cardamom Latte with sweet foam which is on the fall favorite menu. During the seasons, I always look to see if businesses have holiday drinks, and if they do that is a plus in my book. The drink was nice, warm, and flavorful as I tasted the vanilla and subtle pistachio rose. Cardamom lattes are one of my favorites because they are sweet and typically mix well with different syrups. Barley bean is a good place to get some work done if you WFH but not the best place to do so. The music can be on the louder side, so if you need some small tasks to be done then that would be easier to do here. The employees are really great at recommending drinks and food, they have not done me wrong before. In addition, the shop also has games like chess. I haven't played in years but when I played with my friend is was like I never stopped. It was a fun activity to do as we finished our drinks. There is also an outdoor patio full of seating. Parking is located in the back, typically I do not struggle getting a parking spot but if it gets packed then I could see that being an issue. Overall, great place, sometimes I wish they had a drive thru for quick visits but typically they are always pretty quick!

This is a great coffee shop in a very convenient location. I like how they have dedicated parking spots. I had an iced matcha latte which was very refreshing! This was a nice spot to meet up and catch up. Very relaxing.

I love Barley Bean! Great coffee & atmosphere with lots of seating. Excited to welcome Mission Burger who introduced a new food menu with delicious, all vegan options. The service here is excellent - fast & friendly.

I met my friend here on Sunday morning. We got there around 9:30 and there were a few people that trickled in and out but overall it wasn't busy. There is plenty of indoor and outdoor seating. We did not order any food but they do have lots of packaged snacks on a table near the register and I bought some pretzels for later. I got the brown sugar latte, which was pretty good. I got it iced and it comes with an alternative milk option. The coffee was pretty good, the cafe was cute with good music, and there's free parking! I would definitely go back.

Such a great spot. Needed to do some work on the fly and just looked for a spot near me. The staff was so amazingly nice and welcoming. The drink and food options were perfect. They have a cool print thing also. Basically you can print stuff if need be from there. I can't really explain since I didn't use but it's a service that is being hosted at that location. I will Definitely go back if I'm the area. Only down fall was the small parking lot but i guess It's fine for the size of the shop.

Wake up and smell the coffee! Why are y'all sleeping on this cozy cafe/bar when they have a whole separate vegan menu? The Impossible sausage biscuit here is just the tip of the iceberg, and it's only getting better. Their breakfast tacos get a lot of buzz, but I'm often swayed by the Thai tofu bowl for lunch. That means a sizable slab of marinated tofu, spicy cucumber pickles, roasted sweet potatoes, sliced almonds, brown rice, and a savory, spicy almond dressing that's good enough to drink. Why did it take me so long to finally get out there?! I won't make that mistake again, especially since I still need to try those tacos.

Love the options and flavors here! Staff are friendly and helpful. They even have a separate plant based menu. However, the plant based menu does not mean "vegan" The biscuit has buttermilk in it. Not sure what else, that's the only one I asked about. I wish they would make the plant based menu 100% plant based and vegan friendly. Hopefully one day in the future!

Nice, spacious and comfortable cafe. I got latte and breakfast bowl. the latte is as good as other hand crafted coffee shop, but the breakfast bowl was amazing good.

Not a bad spot for a quick bite and some coffee! The pizza was pretty good and we also had a iced lavender latte. The ambience is calm, relaxing, and nice!

An hour ago it wasn't raining, but now it's pouring. A few months ago, I heard of a newer bar and experience called Equipment Room just right off of South Congress. Music means everything to me. Nothing can express emotions and instill a feeling in 3 minutes like a song can. I live for that. Equipment Room is inherently Japanese in concept. Existing in Japan for over 50 years, listening bars combine high fidelity audio equipment with impressively crafted cocktails and alcohol combining the passion of music in a space to gather with comfortable chairs and a beautiful atmosphere. The concept has expanded westward as all cool things inevitably do, but I would never think a spot would be successful in Austin like it would be in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, and so on. As I back my car into a parking spot on South Congress, I grab the umbrella out of my trunk and walk my girlfriend and me to the entrance trying to not get ourselves soaked in the process. This is not the first time we have tried to go to Equipment Room. We tried to get a walk-in table just to see out of morbid curiosity and that was a failure. I booked her and me a table for this night and I was madly looking forward to it. As we got to the small entrance, we were introduced to the hostess who brought us from the stairs into the main underground space and to our seats on the couch in a large wraparound sofa with other parties sitting near us. The music is faint from the entrance, but once you walk through the main walkway, a wave of sound hits your eardrums. You're immediately engrossed into the music like walking into a concert hall or putting a fresh pair of headphones on for the first time. As we sat down, selections from Outkast's Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik were playing through the speakers. Our hostess introduced us to their "User Manual" (their menu) where it contained all the snacks and drinks you could get your grubby hands on. There's more than just drinks and food on the menu. The first page introduces the concept and gives a few house rules. The second page shows all the equipment this so-called room has, from the premium Klipsch speakers, their preamps and amplifiers as well as their turntables and mixers. It's a dream page for music nerds. I want a $15k speaker in my apartment, but those noise complaints would never end. Our waitress came by shortly to give us water and take our order. Their menu is quite expansive, but the main pages we were told to check out were their A-side drinks or the classics and their B-side drinks, which are more experimental. We had to go with experimental for starters because who knows when you'll get to try something similar again. I started with a Goca Dünya while my girlfriend ordered a Deceptacon. The Goca Dünya was a vodka based floral drink with pistachio foam and Amaro Nonino, an Italian herbal liqueur. The Deceptacon was a rum-based cacao drink with a touch of lime and mint. It took a little time for our drinks to come out, clearly, as they are quite intricate. I loved my drink, bluntly. The pistachio foam was a great balance to the herbal flavors at the bottom. My girlfriend and I continued to enjoy each other's company as the music continued. The space we were in was decorated with posters and memorabilia from legendary artists coming through Austin and some general music decor like that purple album from that Prince guy. The DJ-curator that night was on a tear playing incredible soul music holding the bar hostage with a taste of funk. Jimmy Smith came next before transitioning to a few tracks from Bobbie Gentry. The last albums he pulled out were Steely Dan's Aja (a stone cold classic) and Stevie Wonder's Songs in the Key of Life (a top 10 album of all time). Not only was he playing classics like Isn't She Lovely, but he threw down some deeper cuts like Black Man and Contusion. Incredible. We both got another drink with my girlfriend getting their A-Side Espresso Martini while I got the Brown Sugar from their B-Sides. It was a seaweed and mushroom infused whiskey with a few more bells and whistles and it was super unique. Quite a bit of their menu is Japanese-inspired in homage to the originators of listening bars. This includes Japanese beer, sake, and Japanese-inspired food and beverages on their menu. Very cool. The worst part of the night came when our hour and 45 minute reservation came to a close. I could've stayed there for another 3 hours and never grown tired, but with how popular this space has become, they gotta kick you out at some point. This is an experience you have to have. It's worth it. I'll be strolling back in soon enough because there is nothing like this in Austin and it's truly a special space. RIYL: Actively listening to music.

For food, we got the Cheese board to have something to pick on and we demolished it, haha. It came with marmalade and crackers. The cheeses were great, along with the dried fruits and nuts. The cheese selections seem to rotate every other season, which is cool.

The venue itself has a lively, open feel with an urban backyard vibe and plenty of space to move around, mingle, and actually take in the installation without feeling crowded. What stood out most was how well the space complemented the event. The layout made it easy to engage with the installation while still enjoying the social vibe. They had space for working virtually as well as displays to test some of the technology. There's a nice balance between indoor comfort and that signature rooftop-style setting, which gives it a relaxed but elevated feel. The staff was friendly and kept things running smoothly, and the overall setup felt thoughtfully organized. Whether you were there to focus on the installation or just take it in casually, the environment supported both. The line was somewhat long to get into the event as it was at capacity and could only allow more people as people were leaving the event. I was given a drink ticket and got to try the Patio Pounder with ilegal mezcal, primo aperitivo, tropical citrus, coconut, grapefruit soda. The bartender was efficient even though the lines were long. The cocktail was enjoyable with the balance of smoky and citrus flavors. They also had a variety of food bites available including chips and queso. creamy street corn, and sliders. The food was gone relatively quickly due to the crowds but it would be replenished periodically. Overall, Upstairs at Caroline proved to be a solid venue for a creative SXSW event versatile, welcoming, and very on-brand for Austin's arts and tech scene.
