It was *pretty* clean, but not the cleanest. I know I appear to be enamored with all things Texas, but I believe it's entirely justified. Here's another coffee house that my son and I frequent when I'm visiting him in Austin. Unlike some others, The Barley Bean is mostly an indoor coffee shop. If you've ever been to Texas, Austin in particular, you'll understand that sometimes you have to get out of the heat and humidity. At the Barley Bean, you get some of the best coffee and cappuccino around. And their breakfast and lunch food are also excellent. While the coffee here may not be quite as good as some other places I've been to around Austin, it's still superior to what I get in Las Vegas, where I live. And here in Texas, most coffee houses are all large, comfortable, and open seating, like the Barley Bean. If you're interested, there is still an outside seating area, but I much prefer the inside atmosphere. read more

I loved the varied atmosphere - you can work at the many tables and outlets offered, catch the game on TV, or hang out with a beer and friends on the couch. I got the breakfast croissant, which was HUGE, but pretty good. Their iced matcha latte had a hint of sweetness that was not at all overpowering the matcha. The food menu is pretty big for a coffee / beer joint, as they offer breakfast, sandwiches, pizza, and smoothies. They also sell bottles of wine if coffee or beer isn't your thing. This Barley Bean is great for studying, grabbing a coffee or beer (depending how you're feeling), and snacking on a pastry/light bites or even a full entree like their pizza or many sandwiches. Basically, you've got options. The only thing I'd like is more parking. BUT that's probably not going to change. They have only a few spots for their customers, whereas the rest of the spaces are used for tenants who live in the apartment complex literally in the same lot. It's already stressful getting here off of the busy big street of South Lamar, so guaranteed parking at a place for a solid few hours is always nice. However, their menu looks delicious...I came here to study on the weekend, so I just had a yummy wheat beer and snickerdoodle cookie. They also heat up pastries, whoot! And there are tons of outlets and outlet strips too if you come here with a group to study. They have outdoor and tons of indoor seating, so everyone can take their pick. Restrooms are clean, and they have really awesome and service-oriented staff working here. Will be back here to study! read more

I'm pretty sure these guys are local, and my first thought was if they planted their flag on every college campus, they'd probably rule the world. But it looks like they're shooting for locations within the 700 retail/apartment complexes being built everyday in Austin. Coffee/food/beer/wine when you leave or come home. That may be the smarter move. This particular new Barley Bean is a stand-alone on South Lamar, in front of some recent apartment facility (Greenview? Greendale?), close to the Brodie Oaks/360 intersection and across the street from In-&-Out. Comfortable space, cool staff, and pretty much all the food & beverages you need and nothing you don't. I'd call it less of a minimalist restaurant and more of a coffeehouse with benefits. I think my only rap here is a good cup of solid black will cost you $2.98, but a refill will also cost you $2.98. Nothing wrong with that exactly, but I can lounge around writing Yelp reviews with cheaper refills at 70 other places with good solid black too. But if I did live in that apartment complex here, yeah, Barley Bean would probably be my first or last stop of the day. read more

Saw Barley Bean show up on my Instagram feed and wondered why I had never heard of them before, since I'm always looking for coffee shops with food that are good for hanging out with a laptop. Barley Bean meets all of these critieria and more! Very decent lattes, great choice in food, nice mix of tables, lots of outlets, free reliable wifi, and even cigarettes! For an Austin created place, I was a little surprised at the cigarettes for sale, but I suppose that is one aspect of keeping it weird. We visited during weekend brunch hours so were able to order off the the brunch menu. We had a build your own omelette and an order of lime pork tacos. Both dishes were delicious! The menu lists the pork tacos as coming on flour tortillas, which would have been ok, but I prefer corn. I asked if they might have corn tortillas, and they did! Made my day. Overall service was pleasant. Space was clean. Food was great. And set-up of the tables and outlets would make this a great place to work on a laptop when needed. read more

Barley bean was chosen for our lunch in Austin because of the menu variety and great combos in their sandwiches. Unfortunately, out of a group of 6, I was the only one to like my Greek Chicken wrap. There's also a small outdoor patio with a couple of tables that's dog-friendly! I had the pleasure of meeting the owner and she was super sweet and told my friend if she didn't like her drink (first time ordering a shot of espresso) she can turn it into a latte. Great service! This is my new favorite coffee place in Austin. I guess I say that about every good coffee place I visit but this one is really good. We tried the dirty soy chai and the soy caramel lattes. What I loved about them were how thick they were and that volume just made it taste so much better. Love the coffee mugs they have. I am sure you can buy them along with the other merchandise they sell. I might just get the "espresso yourself" t-shirt some day. The place has a laid back ambience, a good WiFi, nice music and plenty of food options. You can sit back, sip your favorite coffee drink, work for hours, then get a proper meal, grab a beer and head home.
