Seating was comfortable and easy. While my belief is this is one of those you know what you get kinda place I was pleasantly surprised by a dish I never would normally order. My go to is as basic as you get--spaghetti with meat balls. However i savored every last bite of the scallop salad and especially appreciated all the flavors and the generous chopped garlic spread over them. Scallops were cooked well and tasty, the dressing was superb and the veggies complemented a dish I would most certainly get again. read more

We have a bigger Assaggio restaurant in Hawaii Kai but I was in Kahala and felt like having Italian food. I haven't been to this location before. There's a nice menu to choose from but we got our tried and true chicken saltimbocca, as well as the bay shrimp salad. They had vichyssoise and I love it so I got a cup. The bread that came with the is awesome!! We shared the bay shrimp salad which came with small tail on cocktail shrimp, little cubes of cheese, tomatoes on a bed of greens. Loved the dressing. The vichyssoise was okay. Not much taste at all and thin.We also shared the small order of saltimbocca on angel hair pasta. It was plenty enough for us. The chicken was soft and topped with eggplant. I found the chicken to be a little bland but the sauce on it helped with the flavor. The pasta was done al dente, maybe a tad bit underdone but better than a soggy pasta (yuk). If I come back to this location, I think I'll try another dish. Several other diners ordered Caesar salad prepared table side. The servers were all great-friendly and kept checking in with us. The biggest downside is the parking. It's a small tight lot shared with a few other businesses,namely Domò Cafe which had a lot of customers which keeps the lot full. Food was terrible. At lunch yesterday I ordered linguine with anchovy. I was served with linguine with only pieces of garlic. Nothing else. If there was misunderstanding the cook should have checked with the waitress. I was charged comparable prices to other plates on the menu. In the evening I got diarrhea flushing out garlic. Next day I still have diarrhea. I presumed the cook knew how to cook. This showed me he did not. My husband and I have frequented this restaurant for many years and had been happy with the food and the service. Recently, we went to dinner there again for our favorite dish: filet mignon. To my surprise, my food came on a very small plate, maybe a child's plate. I ordered the "petite" filet mignon as usual. 1.The pasta kept falling out of my tiny plate whenever I cut into my steak, 2. Two different servers came to our table to take our order; we had already ordered escargot with server #1. 3. Another person (busboy perhaps) kept asking if we were done with the bread, wanting to take the basket away. 4. Most importantly, the steak was not a good quality meat for $39 for a petite portion, (AND NO AFTER DINNER MINT) We will be looking for a new place for our filet mignon!! read more

Will we go back? No. Food and service was mediocre. but the ambiance and the dinning experience as a whole really didn't worth a $27 plate. You will be greeted by two big good luck cats sitting on the counter. Behind that you will see bleaches and other cleaning supplies visible to guests. Staffs were chatting loudly in a south eastern language and I could hear a busser throwing cutlery in the kitchen. Ok we didn't come to their Kahala hotel branch but.... So disappointed. That sums up my experience with the Kahala assaggio's Bistro take out service. I make that distinction, because I've had some good meals dining in at this restaurant. But my experience with the takeout was incredibly disappointing. We ordered the pasta with meatball and sausage, along with jumbo shrimp and asparagus and bread, all together plus tip $100. Take a look at what they advertised on the website as the pasta meatball and sausage plate, along with what I got ( my wife had taking some of the pasta out of the dish before I got this picture, but you get the idea). There was so little sauce, that this was just basically pasta with a meatball and a nasty sausage plopped on top. There was more water in the container than there was sauce! The asparagus was decent, with garlic sprinkled across the top, and the jumbo shrimp was good-sized and tasty. The pasta plate did not have much flavor, due to the lack of sauce, the meatball was mediocre at best, and the sausage was so bland that I didn't finish it. No need to go on and on, but I definitely would not ever do take out here again. Too expensive for a very mediocre and ill-prepared plate. There definitely is a distinction between eating in the restaurant, which I would rate at three and a half to four stars, and the takeout. I've had good meals inside the restaurant. If I had received this plate eating in, I would have sent it back, and I'm pretty sure they wouldn't have served this kind of a plate inside the restaurant. read more

This review is for anyone thinking of ordering delivery through a 3rd party. DON'T DO IT!!! I've dined at this Assagios and others over the years since they opened. It a family favorite!!! Never had any issues with this location and always loved their food! The Bitesquad app seems very simple on our end, but I guess it's not on the restaurant's end? I ordered 2 pasta dishes the same way I do when dining in house. When I received my food delivered by Bitesquad both dishes did not have pasta. The restaurant claims when you put anything under special requests they'll assume it's a substitution. Even if you clicked the type of pasta you want on the app. I didn't get a refund on my meal. My advice to you if you really can't dine in house and have any type of modifications to your meal... MAKE SURE YOU SPECIFY IN DETAIL WHAT YOU WANT!!! Or else they'll just assume it's a substitution!!! read more

Great local, I believe family owned, Italian restaurant with kahala being one of three in total. Always have a very good meal and service is great. Have gone there in the past with family for special occasions but this time went with my three buddies for an early dinner at 4:30, right when they opened. Very casual start, as our server realized that's what we wanted, and opened our own bottle of wine. I believe there was a $20 corkage fee. I had a corona, not the virus. Sorry, too soon? Ordered two orders of calamari as a starter. They were nicely cook and crispy with a mild wasabi aoli on a bed of greens and a slice of lime with a couple of slices of carrots. Nice starter to dinner but would have liked the wasabi aoli dipping sauce to be hotter, but that's mostly because I like it that way. For dinner, we ordered chicken parm, linguini with minced clams in a red sauce, chicken and vegetable pasta, and I had the New York strip steak medium rare with mushrooms and onions over angel hair pasta. All were very good but my steak, though cooked to temp, was more seared on the outside than I like, It was almost burned, but the inside was cooked fine. For dessert we have chocolate gelato, flan which was nice, and cannolis which were good but the cannoli seems a little over done if not burnt. Yes, I gave them five stars but there were some little mistakes with our food but our server did a great job of keeping us engaged and glasses filled. We just so happen to be on a neighbor island getaway, so we celebrated a friend's birthday here as he loves this Oahu chain, more so the location in Mililani, but we ended up here because we were staying in Waikiki. I ate at the Ala Moana Center location years ago but all is a blur. Anyone who knows me is well aware that I absolutely do not like being rushed when I eat, nor do I want to burden the staff with delay. Therefore, I will not patronize a place that closes within an hour of our arrival. We were tight on time, so we set a 9:00pm reservation on a Sunday night with the restaurant closing at 9:30pm. It was was our last night on the rock so it was now or never. Long story short, we arrived about 10 minutes to closing time, with the restaurant even phoning us while en route, to check if we were still coming, and telling us that "last call" is soon. I'm already having second thoughts about going, and with a "Hello are you coming?" call, I really didn't want to go. But, our driver was insistent, so in we went. ATMOSPHERE: It was a Sunday night, 10 minutes till closing time and of course the parking lot is empty. As we pulled in, I could see the staff peering out the doors. That made me so uncomfortable. Naturally, 10 minutes to closing time, absolutely no other patrons were inside. Just great. The exterior matched the interior which is very dated but clean. There are quite a few seats with a mixture of booth and regular tables. DINNER MENU: I've never seen a menu so large outside of a Chinese restaurant. If you choose to dine here, I'd advise you to look over the menu online because it's very overwhelming. There are tons of apps, soups, salads, vegetable dishes, pastas prepared vegetarian/chicken/seafood styles, steaks, veal, seafood. They also sell their sauces, dressings, hams, cheeses and pastas for take-home. FOOD: Clam Sauce - small $18.90, large $24.90. I'm glad I chose the small size as it was a generous portion. The large, I'm sure could feed two. Honestly, I opted for this as it was at the top of the menu and didn't feel like going through the numerous selections being that we were rushed for time. A hearty helping of canned clams covered most of the linguine, finished in a subtle white wine sauce. A red sauce is available too. Good, but definitely not the best I've had. SERVICE: Oh boy, here we go. Shaun was our server. While he was polite, we didn't get the usual welcoming spiel of an introduction, beverage offerings, appetizer upsell, or knowledge of available specials. It was a feeling of "look at the menu, hurry up and order your dinners". My gang made the effort to order a bottle of wine and one of the clam appetizers. Our alcohol total can sometimes come close to the food amount but I was not feeling a happy vibe here, so I didn't have one drop of it. Major fail. Food delivery was quick and he did check on us often. The service was a little better than what I had expected. I didn't hear any cleaning up noise and the place was kept lit like it was full of patrons, but it was still very uncomfortable nonetheless. I felt bad for the workers and understand that they want to go home, but in the restaurant biz, the customer should feel welcomed regardless of dining and closing times. I like this location. It's a bit hidden in Kahala. You can't really see it much mainly because it's hidden near the freeway/highway cutoff. It's next to Lanikai Juice. The parking lot is small so it's limited because it shares with UPS and Lanikai Juice. Inside is nice and clean, smaller than other locations I've been to but it's so much more peaceful. The waiting staff is quick and professional. The food is consistently good at all their locations, this place doesn't stray away from the deliciousness. The chicken piccata with angel hair pasta is always a good pick. It's one of my favorites. I got the tiramisu for dessert and a garden salad for appetizers. My wife got the special sandwich of eggplant parmigiana and ice cream cake (spagnutti?) All in all, the food was good! I'd come back again. Definitely. read more

I ordered the fresh clam casino. The white wine butter sauce is rich, but the noodles were lightly coated in the sauce so it wasn't too heavy. Like many other people in Honolulu, I very much enjoy Assagio. Classy and bustling; strong Italian dishes in the context of what Hawaii has to offer; great service; reasonable prices and reasonable parking. If you're a reader of my reviews you'll notice I'm generally seated at the bar. Rarely are reservations needed and for parties of 2 people there is almost always space. A simplified way to grab dinner, experience the service and overall atmosphere and culture of a restaurant. As expected, we are almost always at the bar or tall bar tables on our visits to Assagio. Jerry is typically working when we are there and frankly, he is amazing. Fast, fun, recognizes us, and takes great care to ensure we are happy. Wishing I could clone Jerry and drop him into a few other restaurants around town (see my other reviews). Thank you for what you do and how you do it. Our favorite wine is their Sonoma Cutrer Chardonnay, the coldest and best Chardonnay in town just ahead of the Gravel Bar Chardonnay at the Honolulu Club. The Assagio bar is usually quiet early, a pleasant surprise. Food is strong no matter what you order with substantial portions and forward flavors. Pasta is perfectly prepared. Most recently we had their pan fried chicken with anchovy, garlic, and olive oil. Not for the faint of heart and definitely a must-avoid for local vampires, you and your partner had both better share the dish. It's powerful and so will you be when breathing garlic on your friends and neighbors for a couple of days following. Their Italian sausage and meatballs are very good; red sauce spot-on, and clam dishes quite good as well. The extensive menu would take a lifetime to sample but I think it's safe to say you will like what you order, the only caveat being this food isn't bland and blah. Chicken Olio has a delicious garlic sauce. The chicken sorrentino has ham, mushroom & cheese topping, also delicious. Both are we've with pasta. I had the fettucinni which was yummy. A large size is a Generous portion. I had enough leftover for a full meal the next day with a side of broccoli. Will be another go to place for a delicious takeout meal. I don't normally eat pasta, but their food is delicious! I simply add a caesar salad and a heaping portion of broccoli to get my veg! read more

First time trying out this place and it was comparable to the one at the Ala Moana Shopping Center, except parking was more cumbersome due to limited parking spaces. Valet parking turned out to be the way to go. It was a good dining experience, and their tiramisu dessert was highly laudable, and simply delicious. Assaggio's is a local Hawaiian chain of Italian restaurants - their original location is near Ala Moana. The restaurant is surprisingly big and the parking lots not surprisingly small. The restaurant feels like an old school Italian joint with basically every combination of pasta known to man. The menu is a novel. The best part of my meal was the steamed broccoli - fresh, simple, delicious and topped with a generous amount of fried garlic. The seafood pasta did not taste fresh, but I enjoyed the light white wine sauce over the butter sauce. A half portion is more than enough for one. Good for groups because of the space, menu variability, and speed of food coming out. Not my favorite Italian restaurant in Hawaii though. read more

I just moved into a nearby neighborhood and am checking out restaurants in the area for "go to" places. Italian is high on our list of preferred foods and so we tried out Assaggio Bistro. First of all the place does not look like much from the outside but inside is very nice and large. The menu is huge, they have everything you can imagine. We were a party of 3 and each of us liked our dishes. The service was very good as well. The dining rooms is nice and I felt a little underdressed. Not saying you need to dress up, but my t-shirt, shorts and slippers was a little ghetto. A golf polo or aloha shirt will suffice. I would not say the food was the best Italian food I have had, but definitely good enough for a return visit to try more of their menu. read more

How is this restaurant ok with this? I'm a returning customer plus I even tip when I order takeout. Ordered takeout on 9/28 for lunch. Spent $11 on a "regular" Caesar salad and received what's in the pic. The salad was so tiny as you can see compared to my baby's fork. Plus it was already soggy from the dressing. Rule of thumb- takeout salads always has their dressing on the side. I also ordered $20 clams. As you can see in the pic this item was also overcharged. There were only 8 clams in here and they charged me $20! That's just robbery! Don't order takeout here unless you like paying triple the price for less than ok food. read more

Some of the appetizers we ordered, Fresh Clams Scampi Style: Olive Oil, Garlic, Butter and White Wine (Clams were pretty big) $13.90 Calamari in Carrozza: Deep Fried Calamari. $9.90 Carpaccio: Thin Sliced Raw Beef Filet Mignon $12.90 Smoked Salmon with Capers: $13.90 For my main dish I ordered, Osso Bucco Alla Romana (Braised Veal Shank) with Pasta: $21.90 (Small Portion) Who can resist scooping out that delicious flavorful marrow out , not me! I really think that I would have a gout attack if I ate here regularly. (I can just hear my big toe screaming at me!) If you're in the mood for eating Italian and in the Kahala hood during the lunch hour, Assagio Bistro may just fit the bill. There's free parking in the small lot and something on the menu for everyone -- the kids, the pasta lover, the meat eater, the vegetarian, the meatball sandwich guy, the seafood seeker, and even the slender friend on a cleanse; she gets the minestrone soup. I like to start with the house salad -- a plateful of tossed greens, cheese, tomatoes and crunchy/tangy pickled vegetables bathed in a creamy dressing. I bribe the 5-year-old to sit still by feeding him the cheese squares, which he happily munches between mouthfuls of just-from-the-oven-warm house bread. For me, there's also gotta be a side dish of garlicky broccoli or another dish of sauteed onions, mushrooms and potatoes. Not recommended if on a date; garlic breath is sure to nip romance. If I'm really hungry and wearing a loose fitting dress, I'll just order the chicken marsala or eggplant parmesan. On the occasions I've been here, I found the dishes were prepared much like the Assagio restaurants in Hawaii Kai or Ala Moana. This is one of our favorite restaurants and favorite locations. Parking can be a challenge during peak times. I love the clams linguine. It's loaded with them. Also, there is a mushroom linguine with alfredo sauce so creamy and decadent you'll leave stuffed. Even with the small portion. Steaks are always juicy and flavorful. The kid always gets a spaghetti or linguine with meat sauce. It is loaded with meat. So much so, we take leftovers home and add the meat sauce to more spaghetti we have. Bread is piping hot accompanied with real butter. Service is always good. Ala moana's service is inconsistent and lacking the last couple of times we went. Kahala is pretty consistent, perhaps it being smaller. Also, you can dress up, or come casual. You can't go wrong here. read more

Terrible customer service. I was just in for lunch today with a colleague and we were here just talking. The restaurant was empty and the waiter with glasses was super impatient with us. He kept looking at his watch while standing in front of us because he wanted us to order. When we asked for the check, he spoke in Chinese to his coworker "let them wait. All they've been doing is talk and they only split a meal". If I was there by myself, I would have confronted that man in Chinese, but I didn't want my colleague to feel comfortable. 1. VERDICT/VALUE 3.5 stars: good environment, good service and good food, but the price may be a turn off for some, especially with a lot of food establishments nearby. 2. FOOD On this night, I started with a Caesar salad (after the wrong salad type was brought out), and it was nice, but the small size (little larger than my bread plate) makes the $9 price tag a little hard to swallow. The great-tasting constantly-available fresh bread loaf and butter made up for that experience :) The large portion Sicilian Chicken ($23.90) was a delight and impossible to eat in one sitting unless famished: boneless chicken thighs pan fried with plenty of onions and bell peppers of all colors and mushrooms. It normally comes with roasted potatoes, but I got it served on a bed of linguine tonight which worked out well. My wife enjoyed the fish of the night: opah/monkfish in a furikake preparation and it came out nice and crispy. Accompanied by a salad and linguine, it was good, but we're unsure about the $31 price tag. The plantation iced tea ($4.75) was good and constantly refilled. 3. SERVICE Apart from the salad mix-up at the beginning of the night, it worked out well for our table of 5! There was a 20 minute wait as we did not have a reservation and we ended up closing the place. Constant attention was paid with drinks constantly refilled and individual preferences remembered each time. 4. ATMOSPHERE Diners are treated to a nice, pleasant, modern decor where table separation is sufficient to allow for easy conversation. Horrible tasteless meal I ever ate in a restaurant. Ordered simple pasta with marinara sauce. It was so tasteless it tasted like it was pourd straight out of the store bouggt marinara sauce jar. My friend order another pasta dish and it tasted equally horrible. We had starved all day and were pretty excited about dinner. Usually on an empty stomach and hungry, most food is good enough. My God we were so disappointed. We barely had a few spoon bites and knew it was not for us. The fact that they saw all the food being returned almost untouched should've bothered management to want to know what happened. No, it did not. It all then explains why their food quality was so horrible and their ratings are comparatively low when compared with other Assagios franchise in Honolulu. Good management would approach such clients prior to them leaving and try to see find out why their food was not eaten and hopefully fix it at for at least future customers. HORRIBLE food quality and disappointing management. Not all Americans eat junk or tasteless food. If they will collect people's money, they better be serving something edible. I don't know what they truly served that Friday 9/20/24 for our dinner. If you like Assagios, please try another. This particular Kahala Mall franchise is not for you unless they have other meals that are done right. People work hard for their money and deserve to eat right when they chose to pay for a meal out. Dinner specials include fresh fish catch, Busco ham shank, seafood combo consisting of scallops, shrimp, clams & mussels with choice of linguine, rigatoni, fettuccine pasta. We love the calamari legs and escargot appetizers. You can select a small or full portion for most entrees. Great friendly service from waiters and delicious food and appetizers.
