We had the set menu and it blew my mind, everything was well balanced and not too heavy. The appetizer was a croquette and it was so crispy that it cut the roof of my mouth a bit haha. I can't tell you how disappointed I was. We ordered the chefs tasting menu, but wanted extra items because we were excited to try a bunch of things. Duck on the tasting menu was lacking flavor (rubbery skin), upgraded one menu with the wagyu beef filet and they over cooked it. It was in between medium well and well (grayish slight pink). I asked for it to be cooked medium rare. I did ask Don/Jon? I forget his name if chef could redo this because it was a bit over cooked for my liking and he replied let me take a look and says, "this looks like our medium rare." I was tempted to just ask for a blue steak if they had redone it, but just ate it and didn't want to cause a seen. Maybe he was too afraid to ask the chef, but just poor hospitality. Honestly, just more shocked at the response. I understand that everyone has their own opinions on how meat should be cooked, and I'm no cook, but when we upgrade and pay more for a speciality item I would hope to get it cooked properly. read more

Another outstanding dinner from Chef Kiyota. The Tuscan Wine dinner was delicious and one of the best meals we had at Threadfin. The Black Truffle Whipped Burrata with poached apricot and arugula was delicious, the Maui Venison Bolognese with Black Pepper Bread Crumbs was superb and the Tuscan Braised Brisket Peposo over a creamy garlic Polenta was a perfect complement to the first two courses. The dessert: Cantucci with Vanilla Custard and a Coffee caramel was a magnificent way to end the meal. The Cantucci was superb and I wish the Pastry Chef would sell them by the pound. The wines selected by Sommelier Sky Cameron were perfectly matched to each of the courses. The staff was professional and efficient adding to the overall experience. We came to Threadfin Bistro to celebrate a friend's birthday. It's located in Kilohana Square where Mr. Ojisan was previously located. They recently also took over the Feng Shui store spot next door. It's a clean and modern dining area with a full bar in the second room. It seems that their menu changes which is nice and customer service was aggressively friendly. They kept wanting to take away dishes. It was a little odd when there was still some food like lobster meat or clams in the dish. They offer a preset menu or you can order a la carte. We ordered a la carte and shared family style. It was all our first time dining there so it gave us all a taste of the menu. Everything was good and portions were enough to share for our group. Stand out dishes were the Abalone Escargot Style, Manila Clams, Crab Curry Noodles and Cabernet Braised Short Ribs. The Lobster Noodles were pretty good too. Kona Abalone Escargot - what can be wrong with that? Nothing! Everything is right about it!! Buttery and luxurious yet deceivingly light. A perfect paring with the baked bread but glad my friend suggested the side of bread shop bread, so we could sop up ALL the beautiful butter sauce. Order this!! Do this! The flavored butter that came with our side of fluffy 'The Bread Shop' bread made me stop mid-sentence and say, "Wow, what was that?!?" My face at that moment could probably replace the 'yummy' emoji! Glazed Carrots - a decadent vegetable dish, simply sublime. All kids would eat veggies if they tasted like this. But I don't want to share with the Keiki. Hehe... Hokkaido Scallops - resting on a bed of risotto. Both perfectly prepared, a magnificent marriage. The dish was rich but bright. Creamy comfort in every spoonful. It was actually on the pre-fixe menu. Our waiter Greg mentioned it was a customer favorite and if we wanted it he could make it happen. I have to be honest I don't remember the rest because by this time, I was delirious by all the deliciousness and so full we had ask for a doggie bag. (Hubby was grateful to get samplings) Skipping dessert is not a wise life choice, so we finished off the foodie adventure with a panna cotta. I think it had a lilikoi topping but again, seconds away from a food coma...it was silky and a touch tart which balanced the richness of our meal. Because it's not just about the food... I especially like to support owner operated restaurants. Chef Jason is humble and hardworking. He came out of the kitchen to greet us and say good night. Quiet guy who lets his talents speak for itself and they tell your taste buds this guy is legit! I'll put money down he's a James Beard nominee soon. His time-tested European techniques combined with a fusion of Asian-inspired flavors creates dishes that leave you wondering what you just ate but wanting more. Our waiter Greg gave us fine-dining attention to detail service with a warm, welcome-to-my-house vibe. He was intuitive, knowledgeable, and proud of his product. We ended up ordering two of them for our table of four. Be sure to scoop up all that butter! Another great appetizer was the charred broccoli. The Jidori Chicken was so tender and filling! Started off with the Vichyssoise which was chilled, smooth and creamy. Beet salad with cream cheese was tarp, crunchy and savory with the cream cheese. The new (not so new now, meant to post at least a year ago) location is in Kilohana Square and it's beautifully redone! Modern but still warm and cozy. Fancy food without overly fancy vibe. Two parts to the restaurant included one area with usually smaller parties and another area for larger parties. Parking is easy to find in the lot so you don't have to go far. The food here is so so so good!!! Service is always amazing and attentive without being overdone and stuffy. Never have to wait long for water refills or removal of empty dishes. Food is timely too! Comes out hot (or cold) and fresh. The consistency is impressive! We've been eating Chef Jason's food for many years ever since his Kailua Food Company days. My in laws go so often that they became regulars and friends. My favorite appetizers are the foie gras terrine, abalone escargot style with crusty bread, and uni croquette (new fave). You cannot go wrong with the lobster noodles, short rib penne, and the steak frites for entrees! Some other family favorites are the scallops, risotto, duck, and the crab curry noodle. They are currently BYOB, but offer a limited selection of wines by the glass as they are preparing the launch of their formal wine program. We celebrated my mother's birthday at Threadfin and she's still talking about it. Every bite was genuinely delicious. The Kona abalone with crispy bread was a standout, and the fries and lobster miso pasta were the standouts. Our server was attentive and sweet despite being the only staff on the floor. The only thing that kept it from being completely over the top was the limited drink selection. They were out of beer and several wines weren't available. BINGO! Located at Kilohana Square, the shared parking lot for Threadfin Bistro is free of charge and is sometimes challenging at peak hours. We had no issues. We got the three-course Pre-fixe menu for $68. I chose the Rooted Farms Tomato Salad with bonito flakes, dried prawns, and pepitas. I didn't see any long beans, but it was tasty! The second course was the Fresh Day Boat Catch (mahimahi) with beets, corn, and remoulade on wild mushroom risotto. Delicious and intriguing! Mackenzie is the amazing, young pastry chef here. We really enjoyed her Tropical Mousse, which was creative, light, and fun to eat! We were thrilled when she came out of the kitchen to chat with us for a bit. We were able to tell her in person how much we enjoyed her dessert: The toasted coconut was a nice texture contrast to the smooth whipped cream. The chewy passion fruit gel cubes were colorful and tart, compared with the slightly sweet, pastel-toned lilikoi-mango puree base. Wow! We had a wonderful experience! To Yelp & Threadfin Bistro Owner, I was unable to make reservations for dinner. I tried on OpenTable , but their instruction was to call Threadfin Bistro directly for reservations since they were not set up for online reservations. I called the restaurant and the outgoing recorded message explained that they were in the process of setting up their online reservations portal and to email them (Threadfin) for reservations. I emailed a reservation request over a week ago and did not receive a response. I followed up a few days after the email and left a voice message with an explanation and another request for a dinner reservation. No return phone call or email reply was received. I sincerely ask any customer service related businesses what kind of no follow up response service is this? The first impression is always & forever a lasting one. I don't think the Owner & Executive Chef at Threadfin Bistro would appreciate themselves being treated this way. We are all both customer service recipients and the giver of services to others at some point in our lives. My friend flew in from out of town and wanted to try this place. It was easy to make a reservation online. Luckily we found parking in the small lot. Based on someone else's photo of the hidden "front" door, we entered from the parking lot. Immediately I noticed the seating is extremely tight. There's a very narrow space to get in and out from the table. I was not that comfortable being less than an arms length to the tables on our left and right. With all the seats crammed in to a small dining area, it seemed overwhelming loud with conversation, even for an early dinner. I shouldn't have to yell over the small table nor do I like asking my guest to repeat what they said because I can't hear over the noise. When I saw the price point on their Yelp page, I was expecting a lot more. However, the food was just average in my humble opinion. There wasn't anything fancy or memorable. There wasn't any table-side preparation or presentation. There wasn't anyone telling us about where they sourced the ingredients from or how the dish was prepared. I guess I was expecting more and left a little disappointed. Honestly, I'm struggling to understand the 5 star reviews, especially from Yelp accounts that have zero friends and no pictures. As I write this, I'm struggling to give it 4 stars. So as another reviewer politely said he'd round up his 3.5 average experience....I agree with that assessment. While I certainly appreciated the meal and my dinner guest, I probably won't return. It's just too loud and the noise really is distracting. If they removed one or two tables to create more space in between the seating, maybe it wouldn't feel so cramped. I had a very expensive, not so good steak the night before at Morton's, and thought maybe it was hard to get good beef on the island. The steak here was SO good! We had 4 people so took advantage of 2-3 course pre-fixe menu to try all selections and added 3share plates. The server paced the selections nicely. Started with the local greens, smoked hamachi rillettes and burrata. Greens were great, especially with the roasted grapes, the rillettes seemed more like canned tuna but the burrata was good (didn't need honey in my opinion). Then had the thai curry crab pasta and hokkido scallops. The thai pasta was the highlight of the meal...very flavorful and balanced. The scallops were ok, a bit dry. Next we had the lobster noodles and short rib. The lobster noodles were ok, with bits of tough, dry lobster. The short rib was so tender and delicious. The first seating was sold out and we were fortunate that Chef Jason decided to add a second seating due to popular demand. We were seated at the bar counter and I noticed that it's better seating for this sold out event because the tables were quite closed to each other and filled with diners. The dishes were all very tasty, plated nicely, and the portion was perfect for me. No left overs to deal with and not hungry for more food. Service was excellent. Wait staff were knowledgeable about the dishes and someone was always there to refill our wine glasses. The restaurant is small and intimate with modern decorations. This is a very special spot. It is tucked away in a quiet little corner and we are all so fortunate to have access to the food being carefully prepared here. The space is modern and achieves a lovely zen vibe between the thoughtful colors and light fixtures chosen for the space. The staff across the board was friendly, knowledgeable and kind. Clearly the chef owner made some thoughtful choices because the entire experience was literally perfect. They even had live music that was played at just the right level of volume and the playlist paired well with the entire dinner. Now. The Food! We started with the foie gras and shrimp. The challenge was that we wanted to eat both. How do you choose between bites when given such a yummy choice?! Very different flavors and each so incredible. After licking both dishes clean, literally, we moved onto our two pasta dishes. Omg. So good. We strategically made the decision to stop half way through the rigatoni with braised shortribs to ensure we could finish the pasta with lobster thinking that it would be best to pack the beef pasta for leftovers. But it was also a Sophie's Choice. ;--). Btw the lobster was not even the star of that dish. It was the zucchini squash and red peppers that packed so much flavor....I know. I was also surprised. I think the chef must have prepared the veggies separately because they had so much flavor and still had a really nice bite to them and he tossed them with the pasta and lobster meat with just the perfect level of sauce. It was not dry. It was not drowning in sauce. It was absolutely perfect. Chef Jason Kiyota was kind enough to come out and chat with us despite having just served many people with his delicious food. The small little restaurant only seats a couple of tables and a few people the bar but I honestly love that because it creates a very intimate setting and that's exactly what you want for a special occasion. We got seated at the bar and our server Allie was super sweet and walked us through each of our dishes. You can choose your first and second courses and my date and I chose one each so we could try more things. The menu rotates seasonally which just makes me want to visit every season so I can experience their innovative new dishes often. This great little gem in Kapahulu was awesome! In regards to the food, every dish was an absolute hit. I began with the Salmon Pastrami, which was beautifully presented with a mix of flavors that worked well together. The trout caviar, roasted tomato salad, and pepitas added depth and texture, making it a delicious and indulgent starter. For the main course, I got the Day Boat Catch paired with wild mushroom risotto. The fish was tasty and cooked to perfection, while the risotto was rich and creamy, with just the right touch of earthy mushrooms and beets. My folks got the Washugyu Steak Diane which was another highlight--an incredibly tender cut of steak, enhanced by the porcini glace di viande and a side of smoky BBQ carrots that elevated the entire dish. Stumbled upon the restaurant on Maps while I was looking for dinner one night. I arrived to my placemat already set by the waitstaff and a friendly welcome. I chose the Hokkaido scallops paired with the Grüner (wine) for my first course - which were bright and full of flavor. For my second course I chose the Jidori chicken paired with a Pinot Noir - the chicken was perfectly cooked with a nice truffle and sweet potato accompaniment. I had a coffee between dinner and dessert, and ended the evening with a delicious fruit crumble. It was a little loud, but I believe that is no fault of the restaurant: just the intimate nature of the smaller dining space. Highly recommend! read more

Very quite, small restaurant, dinner spot. Good for couples or a double date. Kind of minimalist inside, no art work, no plants Prefix fair for the evening allows sharing plates and being able to taste almost everything on the menu. We added a seaford pasta to share and round out our meal along with dessert and coffee. Their coffee is excellent by the way. Service was timely and there when you needed them. BYOB makes it a pretty reasonable evening out. read more

I wanted to like this place a lot more than I did. The price seems reasonable. $68 for a 3-course meal at what is esteemed to be high-end fine dining. This place has no problems getting customers. Its only open for dinner 3 days a week (Thursday, Friday, and Saturday) and its difficult to get a reservation. Honolulu loves new things and Threadfin Bistro is definitely riding a wave catering to a segment of the demographic yearning for something new. However, it doesn't quite come together for three key reasons: 1. Food, while good, is not exceptional 2. Service, while decent, is not acceptable for a restaurant that this place is trying to be 3. Value - Sorry, it's just not there. I'd currently rate this place at 3.5 stars, but rounding up because I do appreciate the effort put in to open places such as this: An alternative to the large high end restaurants. The three included courses consist of a starter, and entree, and the dessert. Selection changes monthly. For June 2024, the starter was either a "Beet, Soy, Miso, Apple" Salad or a "Hokkaido Scallop Tartare". We got one of each. The salad was definitely a little larger, but not that big. The Scallop dish, as expected was very small. Both were good dishes. No real complaints. The entrees we got was the "Day Boat Catch - Olena Curry, Tatsoi, Garllic Confit" and the "Hudson Valley Duck Breast Blood Orage, Mushrooms" which came with an $8 extra charge. The fish was very small. Perhaps a 3oz portion, and was served with veggies, rice and a delicious curry sauce. The sauce really was amazing. I wanted more of that, and more rice to eat it with. The fish was good, but just didn't blow me away. It wasn't dry, but it wasn't perfectly moist either. Overall it was a good dish but not to the level of many other seafood places in town. The duck I didn't try but my other half didn't say much about it. I looked OK, but again the portion was very small. The dessert was NOT impressive at all. It was a take on a banana foster and just didn't live up to expectations. The pastry was chewy and hard. Taste and texture was not great. It was a definite let down for sure. And it was incredibly small. The small portions throughout the prefix menu mean if you're at all hungry you will need to order something else. In our case we got the Kona Abalone ($25) which really was good. It came with some of the olive bread you can otherwise pay $6 extra for. To figure out if this is a good deal, you need to think about what you would be happy to pay for each dish individually. In my mind the Beet Salad or Scallop dish would be $14 at the very most. The Fish was at most a $33 dish. The duck at most $38, and the desert I wouldn't pay $5 for but could see a restaurant charging a maximum of maybe $10. Add this all up you're at $57 for the fish set and $62 for the duck. I think if this place wants to survive long term, they will need to either deliver perfect food or create extra value. Perhaps have a simple salad, and included bread followed by the 3 course meal at the same price. Dessert is the diner's last impression of the restaurant so it had better be amazing and at least partially made to order rather than mass-assembled in the morning and taken out of the reefer as they sell. The service is not top notch. Water sporadically was refilled. Once the server filled the glasses, but only 1/4 way up, then another server came by right after and topped it off. I do not think any of the servers are experienced with fine dining. From the way they open wine bottles to how they describe the food, they lack the sophistication that aficionados of fine dining will expect. Between the main course and desert one server asked if we were waiting for the check. For such a small establishment, the lack of coordination between servers is rather striking. The seats are unbelievably uncomfortable. Hard wood with no cushions. One of the good things about this place is that it is BYOB with no corkage charge. Figure that's worth about $25 a bottle. Total with tip came out to $210. This was for two pre-fixe meals, with the Kona Abalone and the $8 Duck supplement. I spent that same amount two weeks ago at the new Mediterranean restaurant, Mara, and that was for 4 people. It also included several stunning dishes and we were all more full. You could also take that same money and eat at Roy's Waikiki (2 people) where I've never had anything less than stunning seafood. At Roy's you could likely get two entrees, and share an app and dessert. The shared plates will likely be the same size or larger than two of the minuscule dishes at Threadfin Bistro. Overall I'm glad we tried it. If a future menu looks amazing I might give it another shot. But I won't be rushing to go back or make an effort to look for their next menu. read more

Aloha, there's a newbie in Kapahulu in the former Mr. Ojisan space in Kilohana Square - Threadfin Bistro is from Kailua, Chef Jason still doing his magic in the kitchen. Very nice pre-fixe menu of 3 generous portions. Choice of start, entry and dessert. There are add ons like bread, abalone and chef specials, tonight of octopus in a tomato sauce. All so ono . The beet salad was the bomb with nice goat cheese. So yummy. It's the details that make this place special, from the tasty whipped butter, the layered goat cheese under the beets, the sauce with little crunchy veggies under the opakapaka and the blue cheese butter in the steak. The steak was perfectly cooked. Will definitely be back to try next months menu. Please come on down and support this great new restaurant. Enjoy! read more

Food has been consistently amazing each time we've dined here! The crab curry noodles is a favorite of ours. This time I chose the set menu of mushroom tart amuse bouche, bitter greens salad with ricotta cheese, smoked duck breast and choice of dessert (crème brûlée).
