My son and I visited HoMA Cafe yesterday, and it's always such a nice experience to dine somewhere connected to an art museum. The setting is beautiful, relaxed, and feels like a little escape -- especially after spending time exploring the galleries. We happened to go on one of their busier days, so we fully expected a wait or even to be turned away. Instead, we got incredibly lucky -- someone had just canceled their reservation right as we arrived, and we were able to get a table. That timing alone felt like a win. My son absolutely loves the buttered noodles from their kids menu, so that was an easy choice for him. I had already eaten, so I kept things simple and ordered an Arnold Palmer. The drink itself was refreshing and enjoyable overall. The only thing I noticed was a slight minty undertone in the tea, which I'm assuming is part of their blend. It wasn't a dealbreaker -- I still enjoyed it -- but it was a little unexpected if you're used to a more traditional Arnold Palmer flavor. Now, about the noodles. Unfortunately, this particular serving had a literal puddle of butter sitting at the bottom of the plate. It was pretty unappealing visually and honestly a bit excessive. We ended up pushing the liquid butter to the side just to make the dish manageable. That said, my son still happily ate his noodles and enjoyed them -- which tells me the base flavor is still something kids love. On the positive side, the service was really good. The staff were attentive, friendly, and helpful throughout our visit, even during what was clearly a busy service period. That kind of consistency makes a big difference. Overall, this visit had a mix of positives and one noticeable hiccup with the food preparation. HoMa cafe - the ambiance is relaxing and servers are professional. It is outdoor but under the roof so that we can enjoy the HoMa atmosphere. My friends and I enjoyed the food very much. There are a lot of vegetarian choices as well as meat/seafood choices. Price is reasonable as well. I do want to highlight the dessert that we had. It was not overly sweet and just out of the worldly delicious! This place is perfect for business gathering, bday celebration or just a quick lunch with friends! Update: HoMA Cafe never disappoints with great food and drink. We came for a Sunday brunch early in the day. It's probably best to make reservations. Coming to see the latest exhibits and taking in the architecture and gardens is the best part. The icing on the cake is brunch here. We were served a special egg benedict plate with sausage and bacon with potatoes. Also, the cobb salad was nicely plated and tasty with a great dressing to complement the blue cheese. Most know that HoMA is a wonderful museum, but only recently did I experience how good their brunch is as well. A small menu consisting of classic breakfast options, I found their prices to be reasonable for the peaceful and contemporary setting. I ordered the French toast plate, which consisted of my favorite local sweet bread from Punalu'u Bake Shop on the big island. The French toast was delicious, the bacon was fried to perfection, and the cold brew coffee was tasty and well-blanaced. You can book a reservation online, and entry into the restaurant is free, though I would recommend visiting the museum while you are there. read more

A close friend and I had lunch here 2 months ago (by reservation) and it was my first time at HoMa Cafe. I decided on the Shakshouka breakfast and she ordered one of the board specials, avocado toast. I'd never had shakshouka before, and it was hearty, tasting of spices that tingled on the tongue, tasted like an herby tomato stew base around the 2 over easy style eggs. It has a lot of pita triangles for dipping into the egg yolk and tomato goodness! Friend's dish was absolutely a banger! The toast was a very thick cut oval piece of rustic bread, with avocado mash on some arugula, covered with 2 poached eggs, some feta cheese and brown bits (bacon? not sure) over the top. Needless to say, this dish was SCRUMPTIOUS!! Waitstaff was attentive and refilled our water glasses at least once during the meal. The setting is outdoors in a large covered lanai near the gift shop and Doris Duke Theatre. This cafe offers a relaxing view of the water feature fronting the Theatre, and with lots of floral decor you will have a well rounded dining experience that somehow feels intimate despite the proximity of tables. read more

Haven't been here in years and I don't know why. It's still has the best ambience with tables a good distance apart with a friendly staff. I like that it's not noisy, I guess people going to the Museum already have the quiet and calm mindset. I wish more people would practice this in more places as it can be super irritating listening to a person's conversation when you're trying to have a nice meal. Food was really spot on. We had a mixed Birthday/Anniversary Luncheon with a party of seven. This is our favorite place not only because the food is always top notch but the atmosphere is perfect. Our server, June, really enjoyed accommodating our table (we tipped her well to show our appreciation) and offered to take the cake and keep it in the refrigerator until we were ready to present it with candles and song. To top off the event some of us wandered over to the lovely gift shop which carries the most perfect gifts, from unique cards to dresses, artwork and books and games for the little ones. The prices were okay. The soup was warm and done well, but I would have liked the option to have some freshly cracked pepper added. I did have to push my empty water glass to the side to let them know I wanted more water. The server never asked if my soup was agreeable. She also did not introduce herself. I think they were training someone while I was there because one of the people was shadowing her. I don't mind that, I just wish they did a stellar job to show a good example. The noise level was quite high because they were preparing for an event. I would not say it was relaxing, but it was tolerable. The music choice was odd, but it was from my youth, so I didn't mind. Visited the museum with friends so planned our visit around having lunch. The restaurant is in a lovely setting. From where you sit you can see some massive pottery by the artist Jun Kaneko. It's shady and open to the trade winds. When we visited, it seemed to be quite a few tourists but some locals too. I had the daily special pasta which was a linguini, but it was not to my liking, the sauce was thick and the bacon (or some kind of small pieces of meat was very strong tasting.) Others had the smoke salmon crostini (they said it was good), small green salad (very tender and fresh.) For dessert we had mango upside down cake (the slice was huge) and an apple fruit cobbler ala mode. The cobbler looked good but really had no taste. Two of us had the cobbler and we left most of it. But the one who had the mango cake raved about it. Overall my food was not that great but my friends enjoyed the salad, salmon, and cake. Our waiter was very nice, but spoke very slowly, kept asking same questions and forgot things. By the end of the meal he was more alert like the pakalolo was wearing off . Went to HoMA cafe to eat and spend some time to relax. It wasn't too crowded. I made the reservation for 12:15 but was able to get seated early. The server was friendly and attentive. I got their ginger lemonade, smoked salmon crostini, and chicken breast burger with soup (+$2, soup of the day was mushroom). To be 100% honest, I thought the quality of ingredients was good, but the taste of each dish could be better. The soup was pretty bland, and the burger also tasted pretty bland to me; that made me think they were a bit boring. (I didn't finish my burger because it just felt boring to my palette, I didn't want to eat it all). Pretty cafe in a courtyard of the museum. It's open-air when the weather is nice and the folding panel doors can be closed when it's not. It's a nice place for a celebration; indeed, I saw several people at different tables wearing lei. Reservations are needed. There's a pay parking lot across the street (kitty-corner across Beretania). The entrance fronting Beretania Street is not accessible. There are two steps with no handrails then a set of stairs with handrails. There is an accessible entrance off of Victoria Street. I believe there is another accessible entrance elsewhere, too. The menu is mainly variations on salads and sandwiches (no burgers), and desserts. Because of diet and allergy restrictions, there wasn't much for me, but there were a few things. I ordered the filet mignon sandwich without a bun. It came with plenty of greens that were topped with walnuts and their house red vinaigrette dressing. The food was good. The restaurant was full but no one was waiting at any point so my friend and I had plenty of time to talk. There are nice wood outdoor tables and matching chairs. There's no padding on the chairs, so after a bit the pressure on my hips and back started up osteoarthritis aches in my hips and lower back. A very nice place to have an enjoyable time. read more

Enjoyed a workday lunch with a couple of girlfriends at this cafe. The atmosphere is serene and peaceful, despite the sight of the construction area next to the restaurant. Our server was great up until the end - she seemed to disappear after we asked for the dessert menu and check, but otherwise, she was great. She recommended the sandwich of the day, which I ordered based on her recommendation (shrimp meatball), and it was ONO! Admission is not required to dine here - just tell the staff at the entrance that you're going to the restaurant. But if you have the time, you might as well walk around before or after dining at the Cafe. As for parking, if you come any day except Sunday, expect to pay, either at the on-street meters, or at the HOMA Art School across the street ($6 for the first 5 hours, credit card only). I'm pretty sure their mango upside down cake is in my list of top 5 favorite cakes on island. It has the perfect moist and buttery bite. Fluffy and soft and a bit of crunch around the edges. I wish they served it with more caramel sauce and whipped cream bc I have to budget those with every bite!! The mango is sweet and fresh on top and there's chunks of walnuts inside. YUM!! Getting a bottle of wine and brunching with friends is so fun and relaxing here. I parked on the street on a Sunday, walked into the Cafe after my friend came to get me at the front, and made my way into the cafe. They do check your vaccination card, take your temp and look at your ID before you get in. My menu choices were dictated by my friend, who whole-heartedly and enthusiastically recommended the Shakshouka eggs. Shakshouka (Moroccan Eggs) $18 Two eggs simmering in a slightly odd, sweet cinnamon sauce. There was a small side of pita bread but if you average that out, it's $9.00 per egg!!! Ok to be fair, throw in the pita bread and it comes out to about $8.00 per egg!!!! Wow, those are some pricey eggs. If you want to compare, I would get a full meal at Haleiwa Beach House for this price: a bowl of furikake rice, brown-butter garlic grilled Shrimp (10 pieces), a side of salad with their house dressing and a grilled lemon for the same price. It was hard to choke down two eggs for $18.00 and feel good about it. Michelada $7 A choice all my own this time, a strange mix of a Bloody Mary without the vodka and a bottle of Kona Longboard Lager beer that you're supposed to pour into the tomato mix to make it taste like a watered-down Bloody Mary without Vodka. Most of the spicy flavor advertised actually came from cracked black pepper chunks, which were laying on the bottom of my glass, a rimmed glass that had Tajin around it, and like the odd-flavored eggs, underwhelming at best. I should have just stuck to drinking the beer without diluting it with tomato. Dessert was my friend's leftover Pineapple Upside Down Cake, otherwise my bill may have been in excess of $30.00 without the tip. Brunch was $25.00 without tip, and I didn't feel full at all. The atmosphere here is like a work of art to be admired. Very serene and peaceful with a partially open air restaurant that's set right in the middle of the Honolulu Museum of Art. I particularly enjoyed sitting next to the mini waterfall of the John Dominis art building that ran parallel to it. HoMA cafe is great for catching up with a friend or bringing someone from out of town for a nice lunch while enjoying the museum. It's not too hot and offers nice shade. My husband, & daughter loved it. The food was delicious, ordering a Portobello Mushroom Burger, Grilled Chicken Cesar Salad paired with Ice Tea and Passion Orange as well as Strawberry Shortcake for dessert. The cafe is situated at the center of the museum, spaced out comfortably, and shaded. The staff is so friendly, and the food comes out gorgeous, and very fast!! I couldn't help but glance at what other people were having simply because everything was so beautifully plated and hugely portioned! I ordered the Curried Turkey Salad, and did not regret it. The salad was adorned with fruity dressing and blackberries. The turkey salad itself was plopped in the middle, with a few pieces of cashews at the crown. It was a giant portion, and felt comfortably filling. I love that they have specials that constantly change, which makes repeated visits exciting! Everything is plated elegantly. The food at HoMA Cafe tasted amazing and better than I expected. The different dishes were light and refreshing. I guess it gets super busy around lunch time so I highly suggest making reservations if you decide to want to actually eat in the cafe. Regardless, we opted for take out and found tables around the museum itself to enjoy our food. We tried: *Smoked Salmon Crostini - So good! It wasn't too salty and wasn't too bland. You could taste all the flavors in one bite. It is a little fulfilling so I would recommend sharing this so you could try more on the menu. *Curried Turkey Salad - I was a little skeptical about a cold curried turkey but it turned out so refreshing and tasty! With the berries and vinaigrette, everything offset each other very well. *Grilled Portobello Mushroom Sandwich - HUGE Portion and packed with flavors! The mushroom was so juicy and wasn't too much. Rich, deep...chock full of veg, pasta and potatoes. Seared Ahi Nicoise Salad...a classic interpretation with a generous portion of Seared Ahi turning this French staple into an elevated meal as at home in Nice as it is in Honolulu. Hubby had the Grilled Portobello Sando which came with a side salad. Topped with Swiss cheese and served on a challah roll... he loved the flavors. Of course we had dessert. Apple Crisp with MacNut Gelato for me while hubby had the Mango Upside Down Cake. The crisp was the only weak point of the meal. Great flavor...just not crisp at all. I like to go to Museum Cafes because it makes me look smart and cultured that I am at a Museum. I am just here for the food. I like this Cafe for the following reasons: (1) the location of the cafe in the museum (It's outdoors in the center of the museum); (2) the place is clean; (3) employees are friendly; and (4) the food is good (depending on the day of the week and time, the menu changes). Con: Parking is all up to the customer as there is not a lot on site (only handicap). There is a parking lot off of Young Street so you do have a 5-8 minute walk and it's kind of in a shady part of town, depending on the time you park there. I definitely wouldn't at night. There is street parking around the museum but pay attention to the signs. And the street parking does fill up fast. But my main goal, is because normally the only time I'm here is if I am attending a function at Doris Duke Theater. It's free to come to the Cafe (i.e. you don't have to pay for museum entry fee unless you are actually going to walk around the museum). I just come for the food before I head to Doris Duke (and of course the gift shop, so I can buy something that makes me look cultured - il.e. tote bag with a logo). read more
