My husband and I were super excited to try this cafe but we feel as the food was just average. We got seated by one of the managers and once he sat us he stood by the entrance and was just staring at us and the vibe seemed a little off. Also the severs did not look happy at all, no one was smiling or anything. I had asked for an iced vanilla coffee and was brought out a nitro cold brew and my husband had a piece of napkin or some kind of paper in his pancakes. At the end of this experience someone did kindly pay for our meal so we are greatly appreciative of that but I don't think we will be back. read more

I thought this place was very cute and also delicious. The décor is a bit eclectic but obviously designed with intent. The interior is very spacious so even with a lot of people, things felt spaced out. I was wisely intrigued by the idea of Cinnamon Roll French Toast on the menu and had to get it. After reading "Thick-sliced, house-baked French-toast style cinnamon rolls topped with cream cheese icing, rum butter sauce drizzle, fresh seasonal berries and fresh whipped cream" i had no choice but to try it. And it lived up to my own hype! IT was sweet but the fruit helped balance out the flavors and it came with bacon/eggs for a little bit of a balanced meal with protein. It was the delight of cinnamon rolls but sliced up. Delightful! There were several other interesting-sounding dishes on the menu, so I look forward to returning and trying those. Spent the weekend in Williamsburg with family visiting us from Atlanta, and we had brunch here on the rainiest Friday ever. We enjoyed a Grand Mimosa pitcher (perfectly strong and tasty), chicken biscuits with bacon (yum!), eggs Benny, and the kids' chocolate chips pancakes (with bacon and scrambled eggs, it was a great deal for our hungry 6 year old). Our server, Hannah, was super awesome and felt like a friend once we'd left. She was professional, funny, matched our vibe, and was a genuinely all-around cool person. Where do I even start, this was a horrible experience for me and my girlfriend. We ordered 2 dishes, one of them being a smoked salmon benedict and the other being blueberry lemon zest pancakes with a side of toast. Smoked salmon was standard but the poached egg was raw, I know what a poached egg looks like and that was not one. As for the other dish, the pancakes were solid but we received moldy bread which immediately made me lose my appetite. Also, my girlfriend was given a dirty fork and when she asked for a new one, she was given another dirty fork. Highly disappointed in this place and recommend that you don't go here. read more

I am honestly kicking myself for not trying to his place earlier. For years, this has been the location of a run of the mill IHOP. When A. B. E. Cafe moved in, I presumed it was just another pancake house joining the fleet on Richmond road. I was incredibly wrong. This place is a taste of the south. Most of their dishes are inspired by New Orleans fare which only means one thing - good. To start, I ordered the café amore and full order of beignets. The spiked coffee was delicious and the whipped nut topping was a great touch. The beignets were excellent. They are biscuit beignets and the honey topping was the perfect level of sweetness for this sugary sweet. For my main course, I ordered the shrimp and grits. The waitress mentioned getting them city style which translates to being cooked in bacon fat. I ordered it this way. It practically dissolved in your mouth. It was so savory and had ample amounts of sausage and shrimp. I would get this every time if it weren't for the wide variety to sample from the menu! This place is, while a but pricey, incredible. It has skyrocketed to one of my favorite spots in town and I look forward to going back again. read more

We saw that it was only opened from the morning to early lunchtime and decided that we would come and try it out before our vacation ended. Now when I say I am a brunch person I have been to so many k can't remember most of their names! We had the beignets which were amazing! We ordered a napoleon, a crab Benedict and a double Cho chip pancake. We grabbed a hot cocoa too. It was so good we came here 2 days in a row! Let me start by saying that the restaurant and grounds seem very clean which is always good. We were greeted less than enthusiastically. We were a party of 3 and each added City Grits to our order which is an up charge . After a longer than expected wait our food arrived. Grits was cold, not warm but cold. Other items were not hot When our server inquired we told her that our food was cold. We were still charged and our bill for 3 was north of $78. There should have been an adjustment. My second visit to ABEC was nearly as disastrous as the first. I parked in the same space as before, and was again greeted with the same dead squirrel in the mulch. Sheesh! What part of unappetizing do you not understand? I tried to put that out of my mind because I didn't want that to influence the rest of my review. I perused the menu, and my server, the very pleasant Kaylee took my order and answered my questions. I asked Kaylee what kind of Syrup it was, and she replied by asking me if I wanted Sugar-free Syrup? No, I'm just wondering if it's Maple, Boysenberry or what? She replied, "It's just plain Syrup." I thought to myself that belaboring the issue would be no less frustrating, so I dropped the issue. After a few minutes my food came out, and Kaylee asked, "Do you want Butter with your Pancakes?" Is the Pope Catholic? Yes, I want Butter. I daresay that 9 out of 10 people who order Pancakes, want them with Butter. So Kaylee shouldn't feel the need to ask. Butter should be served with Pancakes, on the side. I started with the Bacon, 2 strips, which was rather lackluster. I ate and enjoyed every bite, I would not order it again. On to the Pancakes. They were rather flat, not fluffy at all. Also dry. Again, I ate and enjoyed every bite, but once is enough. In a blind taste test I would describe them as regular Pancakes. No hint of Buttermilk. The store was basically clean. In the ladies' room, there were several instances of paper on the floor. There were also several scraps in the dining area, but, to their credit, there was one man cleaning it. And something -- Syrup I think -- on the bench seat where I sat. In summary... Plusses: + ease of parking in the dedicated lot + extensive menu + metal flatware + heavy duty paper napkin + mostly clean store Minuses: - quality of the Pancakes. - speed of service - still carrion in the parking lot - waitstaff needs training I think I'm done here. My brother ordered the Skinny Omelette w/fruit and I ordered the Crab Cake Benedict w/country potatoes. This place has a little cajun flare! My hollandaise sauce had andouille sausage which was really yum! Food was really good! I'll be back to try some mimosas or a spicked iced coffee next time! I got the pumpkin waffle with scrambled eggs and breakfast sausage. The sausage was good and the eggs were average. The waffle was good enough, but tasted like something I could have made at home - I was expecting more from a seasonal item. We had a mixed bag of an experience here, but in a town known for it's huge variety of breakfast diners, cafes, and pancake houses, this was akin to eating at an IHoP and overpriced for the experience. The restaurant was very crowded and noisy, so not good for conversation. Our waiter was friendly and as attentive as I'd expect, given the crowds. As for the food, one friend loved his Huevos Rancheros, one friend felt her pancake breakfast was just OK, and I was disappointed in my blueberry goat cheese pancakes (they had a lot of blueberries, but about 1 tsp of goat cheese in the middle of each pancake and that was it). We ordered a side of biscuit beignets and they arrived fully raw on the inside. Waiter brought a replacement and these ones were raw in the middle. I assume the cook was overcrowding the fryer, and I gave up on trying to get an edible batch. Overall, I can't recommend this place when there are so many better options in the area. read more

Berries and pineapple adorned the tops of three cakes that were cooked French toast style. The rum sauce accented the tops. The platter was served with 2 eggs and REAL smoke house bacon. OMG!! We are in from out of town and wanted to get a nice breakfast out. Our hotel was near by so we came in. The service was fine but nothing exceptional. I am disappointed to say that the food was bad. We each ordered something and specified for the kitchen to leave something out(goat cheese for mine and frosting for my friend). Our orders came out with all of these certainly on them, of which we had to send back. As someone with a gluten allergy, this was worrisome as the kitchen could not follow basic requests, making me wonder about the quality of our food. Our eggs and bacon came out cold, where my cheese had been not melted and was still chilled from the refrigerator. My friends eggs had shells in it and was non edible. We are extremely disappointed and upset with spending $45 for a meal our hotels buffet would have certainly beat. Would not recommend until these flaws have been eliminated. read more

I liked this cafe. Decor 7/10 Not much went into the bath decor, which I think is a shame because the remainder of the cafe is nice. It was decently clean though. Food 7/10 There was absolutely no seasoning on this food. Granted it is breakfast food, it was just very bland. The food does come out fairly fast though. I ordered the Mardi Gras omelette as a scramble, with potatoes and English muffin, accompanied with a sweet tea. The tea was actually my favorite thing of my meal, very well made. Service 9/10 I was lucky enough to be apart of someone's training, Larry. Cora I think was her name was the lead. I am glad another broken egg Cafe offers a gluten friendly menu. I have driven past this location quite a bit and decided to treat myself on a Monday morning. There were quite a bit of people in the restaurant but no wait to be seated. My waitress was attentive and kind. Let's get into the food. The pancakes were great I ate every single bite. The bananas and pecans were a great mix. The eggs were decent nothing to rave about. The house made sausage you could tell was unique. It was a bit too peppery for my taste so I'd probably go with bacon next time but I'm glad I tried it. The Spiked cold brew was good. My rim was sad as it should've been covered in Caramel and sugar but it's what's in the cup that matters. I love Iced coffees and Caramel is my favorite so it was the perfect addition to this meal. My husband has recently had some dietary changes and found it very hard to eat here. We often eat at First Watch and this was definitely a step under. This place is HUGE though!
