My parents used to take me here when I was a kid and I always loved the nem nuong platter here!! Recently saw them popping up on my feed and knew I had to go back to get this. My hubby and I decided to get the 12 pc platter and 2 orders of banh xeo. Okay the banh xeo was HUGE LMFAO We were not expecting that... 1 order is definitely good for 2 people. The banh xeo was OKAY ... it was crispy but it was mostly batter and barely any protein (we got shrimp & pork). I wish they added bean sprouts to it :( The nem nuong was and IS HELLA BOMB - just as delicious as I remembered it. The platter came with an abundance of herbs and greens, vermicelli and rice paper for you to roll it up yourself! The meat was perfectly chewy and grilled so the combo with the noodles and greens were amazinggg! I want this again already lolll I ALWAYS order sinh to bo when I go to any pho restaurants and even as a kid I remember Anh Dao would ALWAYS run out of avocadoes... which was the case when I went over the weekend again. As many reviews have mentioned, it is cash only. This restaurant is a no frills, affordable option for Vietnamese food. I got the V7- which was grilled lemongrass chicken and grilled pork (GÀ NƯỚNG & THỊT NƯỚNG). The bean sprouts and veggies in my dish were very fresh, and the chicken and pork marinated perfectly. The service was friendly and fast. The interior of the restaurant was a bit thrown together. There was a plywood board covering the top of the entrance door and exposed ducts. The walls seemed like concrete but were actually a taped on mural of a wall, which adds to its kitschy charm I guess. The only reason I took off a star was because they added a MANDATORY 10% tip on top of the bill, which seems pretty dishonest and misleading. Especially when it is NOWHERE on the virtual menu and not stated anywhere in the restaurant. I am against mandatory tips. They are designed to reward exemplary service; to make them mandatory makes it irrelevant and not a 'tip' anymore. We almost tipped on top of the final bill which would have resulted in a 25% tip... which is absurd. I can imagine many unsuspecting diners doing this. Just incorporate the pricing to the menu item instead for transparency! read more

If you don't know, now you know... the best hidden (sorta) gem downtown for authentic Vietnamese eats This family run spot is known for their DIY fresh rolls with assorted meats and seafood of your choice. My personal favorite is the betel leaf wrapped beef. The beef is so juicy, fragrant and flavourful without being salty. It's served with vermicelli and a huge platter of herbs and veggies. It's a MUST TRY! I love their soups here too and usually get the bun bo hue. However this time I wanted to try something different and opted for the "hu tieu my tho" with rice noodles which is a clear soup with pork and shrimp. It was super light and fragrant and had an abundance of chives to give some extra freshness. Ordered take out on Saturday from Ubereats. Prices are high on the app, I imagine it's a lot cheaper dining in or ordering takeout there but I was just so lazy and didn't want to leave the house I've been meaning to try out their Bún Bò Hue (spicy beef noodle soup) and their Bò Lá Lot Bánh (Betel beef wrap leaf) I was so hungry that I forgot to take pictures before my cousin and I started eating. The soup at first bite was way too salty! I had to boil some water to add to the soup and it made it a lot better, the soup was very flavourful with lots of umami but lacked a bit of lemongrass flavour and there was plenty of meat in the soup. I was kind of disappointed that there were no pork blood in the soup. I was so excited when I got to the Betel beef wrap as it smelled amazing when I opened the box. I ordered the one with 10 pieces and portion was very generous with 2 rolls of the Betel beef I'm assuming grilled, underneath the tin foil where the meat lays on is the thin vermicelli noodles, in a separate box there was lettuce leaves, variety of herbs, bean sprouts, pickled carrots, cucumber and pig ear. There was also a bag of small size rice paper, I wish it came with larger rice paper as you can't fit very much in the small ones. I used a medium sized metal bowl and filled it with some warm to hot water to wet the rice paper with and placed it on a plate, added the noodles, lettuce, cucumber, Herbs, pig ear and the Betel beef and rolled it up and dipped it in the sauce provided which is a little sweet and Tart. I would've given them 5 stars if it weren't for the marked up price and the overly salty broth for the soup. I will however see myself being addicted to the Betel beef wrap as I'm already thinking of when I'm going back for that, it's gonna be my new obsession! I also want to try out their pho and banh xeo. Came here for their nem nuons plate. It was very lacklustre despite this being their specialty. The nem nuon was missing something, and wasn't as fragrant as other nem nuong I've had. The banh xeo on the other hand was really good! They put way too much bean sprouts in it though. The crepe itself was insanely crispy! Would come back for the banh xeo. The pho joint has a unique beef broth taste - some might call it sweet but I would say a bit bland. I ordered the house special pho and a lemongrass pork and spring rolls bun cha and tried their Vietnamese coffee served hot. DO NOT ORDER THEIR VIETNAMESE COFFEE. It tasted horrible even with the condensed milk. I don't know how could they get it so wrong with the coffee when you are in Canada. And they charge $7 (w/o HST) for a Vietnamese coffee (I wanted a refund but I figured I just won't go back again if I ever craved for pho or coffee). The spring rolls weren't that great either. They also played their music so loud (deafening) that I have to yell to have a conversation with a friend. Anh Dao is a Vietnamese restaurant located on Spadina Ave in Toronto's downtown Chinatown. They serve all the traditional Vietnamese dishes but they are kind of known for their Vietnamese grilled pork sausages also known as nem nuong in Vietnamese which they make in house. The best nem nuong I have ever eaten was made by a Vietnamese lady at home and we would buy them by the tray and just put them in the oven and they were ready to eat. A really good nem nuong just be garlicky, tender and chewy and have a slight coat of honey which gives it a natural sweetness. I went on a recent Saturday afternoon by myself, ordered a pho dac biet ($8.00 plus tax one size) and a nem nuong platter ($13.00 plus tax for 6 grilled pork sausages) which came with rice paper, vermicelli, lettuce and mint leaves and dipping sauce. So you would wet the rice paper, put in one grilled pork sausage, vermicelli, lettuce, mint, roll it all together and then dip the roll in the accompanying dipping sauce. The pho was above average, good broth, nicely cooked noodles and decent cuts of beef. The nem nuong was good but not great. It was garlicky, tender, chewy and had nice grill marks but I think they use a bit too much baking soda and it could have used some more honey. Overall, Anh Dao is a solid choice for authentic Vietnamese food in downtown Chinatown. It's reasonably priced, clean and offers good service. read more

I have been wanting to come and try Anh Dao Restaurant, but every time I came they were closed until last week!! Timing is everything... but when the restaurant is empty and passed the prime lunch and dinner hours.. my showing up was not the most exciting thing that can happen to the staffs...when all they want is having their afternoon nap...zzzzzzzz Spring Roll and BBQ Beef Bun ($5.95) - I heard a lot of microwave beeping in the kitchen when my food was being prepared... not really a good sign, so now my food is being heated up instead of cooking?? - Beef is a little cold... maybe they should have be put in the microwave for another 10 sec? - Spring Roll was freshly deep fried..since it cannot be that crispy if it was just heat up in the microwave - I do love the mix of lettuce, basil and coriander in the noodle, giving it a more complex flavour I did not find Anh Dao Restaurant really Amazing but is A-OK for the price. Still my favourite place for authentic Vietnamese noodles. I absolutely love this place because the moment you walk inside, you smell the herbs and spices that are brewed in the beef broth and the delicious meat. We always have ordered the usual. Fresh rolls, and Tai Pho. Raw beef pho with extra noodles ! They use a different shape rice noodle compared to the usual flat type a lot of places use. The broth has a fresh, healthy and crisp taste. It isn't over powering and isn't too fatty or rich. Make sure to have a Vietnamese coffee as well. This will keep you ready to go all day/ night haha. Strong and aromatic flavour. We have tried their "do it yourself " fresh rolls platters too, that are skewers of various kinds of meat. Our favourite is the beef wrapped in exotic leaves. That has an amazing flavour explosion, the platter comes with fresh bean sprouts, basil, mint, chilli peppers, rice wrappers , noodles and of course the meat. The family owned business is friendly and great service, perfect place! Could seriously eat here everyday . I was being told that this is the best Viet restaurant in Chinatown. I didn't believe it at first but I was really impressed with the food after trying it for the first time! The restaurant itself was not too big. The outside storefront easily blends in with the rest of Chinatown shops. Having walked along Spadina many times before, I actually have never noticed this restaurant. Inside the restaurant, there were a few tables. The space was not big so a reservation is probably needed if you come with large groups. For the food, I ordered my go-to Viet food - vermicelli with grilled pork and spring roll. The spring roll was very delicious and the pork was flavourful. It's definitely on my list of better-tasting vermicelli bowls from a Viet restaurant. My other friends got the special Pho that had the various types of beef. It was also very good and didn't taste too heavy on the MSG. I definitely enjoyed my experience there and would go back to try more dishes! read more

AMBIANCE: 2/5 The interior is dimly lit and they did not have A/C up when I arrived. There is no ventilation in the restaurant so even when the AC is on it gets smoky in the building. The interior is clean but old and worn down. This place makes you feel like you're here to eat and then leave which is fine with me. FOOD: 4/5 N1 (Special Pho - One Size) might be my favorite pho place on the street. The broth is dark and savory. It has a lot of depth and survives well against the onslaught on bean sprouts I throw in. The srircha makes the bowl more aromatic but isn't necessary. There's LOTS of noodles and protein within this dish. I couldn't finish the whole bowl (which is definitely saying something). Must order. SERVICE: 3/5 The server will deliver water and your food to you. There are no other interactions. You go to the front to pay your bill. Standard no-nonsense service. Overall: 4/5 I already returned on the weekend (Sunday) with my boyfriend and everything in the review still holds true. The food is consistent (PLUS+). Part of me wants to let the staff know how great their restaurant is, part of me doesn't want to share in fear that too many people will come and they'll raise the price over how great the service is. This is truly a hidden gem in Toronto, my boyfriend lives nearby and hasn't noticed it for a whole year until I pointed it out to him. It's a hole in the wall that you pass by and will barely notice it's open which is the beauty of keeping it not overcrowded. The restaurant wasn't anything fancy or trying too hard, your typical Vietnamese restaurant with maybe a plant here and there and standard chairs and tables. Overall, seemed pretty clean. My boyfriend and I each got a bowl of pho, he got the house special and I got my usual beef ball pho, we also got the pork sausage dish to share. I don't think it's anything life-changing but it's definitely GOOD Vietnamese food. It's a very trustworthy spot to not get MSG tasting broth and it'll leave you feeling satisfied. The pork sausages were also very good and they give you a good variety of greens with to wrap it with. Another great thing is it's a pretty decent price for the portion size. The servers were very nice. Sometimes I find certain restaurants give a harder time to younger customers but this wasn't the case at all. As someone who's favorite food is pho, I hold my soup to a pretty high standard and am pretty particular about what I call good or not good. A friend moved in close by and the moving crew decided this would be the place to Chow down afterwards. It did not disappoint. The soup broth is a bit more salty and cinnamon'ish than I'd prefer, but still very good. It was consistent and had lots of flavor. The noodles were cooked well, and the serving is generous. Also like that the menu has a index by the prices on what extra stuff like noodles will cost. We also order spring rolls and pork skin rice wraps. All are very good. Prices are fair with only the spring rolls being a bit pricey at $14 for six (although it's essentially 12 as they are long and sliced in halves). Service is fairly quick and no frills friendly. Went here with my friend the other day and upon his recommendation I got the Spicy Beef Noodle Soup. Despite the fact that it came with the round rice noodles (i.e. not the flat, translucent pho noodles I would expect), overall the bowl was very good. The noodles, in my opinion, were slightly overcooked (as they were somewhat soft and didn't give enough resistance upon bite). The soup however was phenomenal. It was not too spicy nor salty, but had an aromatic beef flavour in it that was topped up with a small spicy kick that had a very subtle (really barely any) sour flavour. Overall it was very savoury and you can tell a lot of time and care went into the soup. The beef itself came in raw but as it cooked in the soup it was extremely tender and full of flavour, presumably having been seasoned beforehand. I would come back here any day! read more

The best Nam Nuong (Vietnamese pork sausage) downtown hands down. If you come here for any else, you might not be impressed. Actually, I'm just gonna say it, don't come here for anything else people. Just come here for the Nam Nuong and you won't be disappointed. I always get the Nam Nuong dish that comes with the rice paper, veggies so you can roll it yourself. You can customize your roll just the way you like it. I always load up on the veggies and less of the vermicelli noodles. It's kinda fun to see who can roll the best. How have I never noticed this place before? I came here for a quick dinner with a fellow Yelper Avitania since I was craving pho and wanted an inexpensive dinner. We ordered a bowl of pho and the nem nuong, since a few people have reviewed it very well. I'd never had nem nuong before and I really enjoyed it. To be fair, if you pour enough nuoc cham on a phone book, I'd probably eat it. The food was delicious and came out quickly. It was a little more expensive than most Vietnamese places, but the quality seemed to make up for it. The service was very good and the whole place looked and smelled like an old Asian person's house.. Asian spices, mothballs and incense with a whiff of air freshener. We were the first I the restaurant and sat in the dark for a few minutes as they were getting things set up. Ordered rare beef pho and shrimp/pork spring roll. Pho was great, broth was rich in flavour, noodles were al dente and there were fresh red onions, green onions and cilantro as garnish. Spring roll had fresh ingredients, quite enjoyed the freshness. My husband got the vermicelli with grilled pork sausage. Sausage was tasty, the rest were pretty standard. Service wise it was a bit slow. There was one server and one chef for the restaurant. We got our entrees and finished it before we got our appetizer spring roll. Aside from the service, the food was good, you get what you pay for in terms of quality (was a little on the expensive side compared to other pho places). I'd come back though. read more

Been here twice now and really digging it, lots of different menu options than the average T-dot Vietnamese restaurant. Last night we tried the "Tom Bo Nuong Lui" which was an absolutely massive plate of big shrimp wrapped in beef on skewers, with vermicelli, veggies, lettuce, mint & coriander which you wrap DIY style in rice paper. We had a large for $24 and it was enough to feed 3 peeps. On my first visit I shared a catfish sweet & sour type soup and the Nem Nuong pork sausage dish mentioned in other reviews. Both were awesome. I liked the soup as it was loaded with veggies and had no noodles (hasta la vista, carbs!) I was about to give Anh Dao 5 stars, but I have to agree with some of the other reviews - the veggies on my plate both times were not very fresh. I also like that the soup isn't super oily, which is the usual factor for me when I think about "good" pho. Friendly service. Their spring rolls were also super traditional and taste just like the ones my mom used to make when I was a kid. They however were fairly thin and too fried and therefore pretty dry. You definitely come here for the Nem Nuong, which is a Vietnamese pork sausage with some serious DIY veg and other random stuff I've never seen before. Throw all that goodness in a rice paper roll with sausage and inhale through mouth. Fantastic. Pho was decent, above average, but nothing that wow'ed me. Banh beo, which is tough to get at sit down restaurants, were a disappointment. You're better off crossing the street and picking these bad boys up at the banh mi shops. read more
