I have been getting cakes at Amphora for more than 20 years. I love an almond/amaretto flavored cake and Amphora is one of the few bakeries that make it. I recently ordered a cake for a baby shower. I ordered on a Saturday, via email. Before the end of the day, I had a response. I had made an error in my order, and sent an email with the correction. I received an email confirming the correction. I paid for the cake, and the next day received a complete receipt, verifying exactly what I wanted. Great attention to detail to ensure that I was getting exactly what I wanted. We used to order custom cakes from here years ago for weddings and other celebrations. Recently, we moved in the area and I would grab their ready made cakes for any gathering. We have always been satisfied with their service and cakes. I go to crossfit across from there 3 times a week and today a friend and I were early and decided to grab something from Amphora before class starts. Next to the cannolis were chocolate balls and I wanted to know what they were so the guy (never caught his name) nicely explained what it was and that it contained rum. I don't do anything alcohol so I said oh then I'll just grab two cannolis. He packs up a box and at the register I asked if I can have two boxes. He said they are out of small boxes. So I asked if I can have two of the same size box then. He said he can't do that because the box is big and they can't waste boxes and the two fit in that box perfectly. I said one is for me and one for my friend we are going to take it with us not eat there. He said we have to just deal with the one box. Excuse me! Like not my fault you ran out of smaller boxes and you can't give up one more box??? It's for two different people and it is going home and we live at two separate locations! He started getting all sassy. By the way he wears black frame glasses is skinny, tall with black hair up to his shoulders almost and worked the night shift tonight 2/4/20. So now I'm like do you have a plate or anything, he gives a plate. He rings me up and I pay. While in the store I wanted to give my friend the box with her cannoli and I'll just take mine in the plate. Open the box to see they weren't even cannolis they were the rum balls. Even my friend had heard me ask for cannolis not rum balls. I go back to him and told him and he insisted I said rum balls and I know thats impossible cuz even my friend heard me say cannolis and I would never order anything with alcohol. He didn't even acknowledge the mistake HE made. He said well the cannolis are more expensive. Fine charge me the difference. He said 62 cents is the difference I gave him my card and he said don't you have any change, no I do not! You don't have any cash? No I do not only my card. He said it won't accept it. Gave him my other card and it won't accept it. My cards work because I used it after and before class so I know they work. That means the store doesn't accept that small amount on cards. Fine then just give me my money back. I can't do that you will have to talk to someone else. Fine let me talk to someone. He then says he is the only one there right now. OMG! Why would you say to talk to someone else when no one else is there!!! By the way his sassiness never left him he was so rude the entire time just made the whole experience so much worse. Finally said to just give me something of equal price. There were two cupcakes left of two flavors I don't even like and we just said give em so we can just leave. Absolutely, ridiculous attitude, service and policies. Can't get another box, can't get a refund, can't charge any amount on card and had to deal with such sass and attitude from the guy when it was all his mistake to begin with. I have been dining at Amphora since moving to the area. Never had a bad experience, always positive. The food is delicious especially if you stick to the Greek and Mediterranean items. Their pies are actually award winning. Their moussaka and pistachio are sooo good that at times sell out which are sad days for me since those are my go to items. But only happened twice . Sent my hubby here at the last minute to get a cake for Valentine's weekend and he bought the "strawberry shortcake" cake that was already made and ready for purchase. It was the BEST cake that I've had in a long time. Omg. The strawberries were coated with some gooey, sugary glaze that when you took a bite the strawberry was perfectly ripe inside. The yellow cake was moist and the icing was light and not overbearing. Years ago my family used to order cakes from Amphora all the time and loved them, so I decided to order one recently for my birthday party. I found a sample photo from their gallery of what I wanted, however that cake had yellow and teal flowers. I was very adamant when ordering that I wanted absolutely no yellow or teal on the cake. I requested light blue, royal blue, and ivory flowers with an ivory trim (instead of the yellow trim in the sample photo). Instead, my cake was predominantly yellow and teal flowers with hardly any royal blue and no light blue flowers, as well as yellow trim. Despite my receipt reflecting my color requests and being very clear I wanted no yellow. Asides from the incorrect colors, while the icing tasted great, the cake itself was very dry. This is the worst Bakery i have ever been to. If u want to preorder the custom cake you want just not from one of their design book, I would suggest not to go with this bakery. I went in last Saturday to preorder cake for my daughter's birthday. Lady at the front desk told me to email pictures as their designer was unavailable for the price quote.I sent them the pictures immediately. I waited 48 hours and still no reply. when i called them about it.Told me to wait for another 2 business days for their reply. I told them specifically that i need cake by Saturday. I even called them couple of times and reminded them about the urgency, still they have not bothered to return my email or calls. Directly across the parking lot from Weird Brothers coffee is the hidden gem of Amphora Bakery. The exterior of the bakery is underwhelming and very inviting. When you first walk in, you're taken away by the sheer amount of nice and eclectic decorations such as chandeliers and different sample cakes/pastries lying around. It really creates the atmosphere that is truly unique to Amphora. Inside the chillers, you'll find a wide variety of colorful cakes, cupcakes, cookies, fudge and everything under the sun when it comes to baking. I imagined that they can do a reality show in Amphora bakery. They have a huge bakery in the back, and seats where you can observe the staff working. They also have a consultation area for wedding or customizable cakes. I ordered a three pastries, one of which was a two toned cookie, and another one was a cranberry frosted block of something. I apologize I couldn't remember exactly what it is. They were all presented well with very nice decoration on their pastries. Unfortunately, they all seemed too sweet for my tastes. If we can tone down the sweetness, then I would imagine the pastries to be perfect. Amphora Bakery offered me a great experience that hit all of my senses when you walk in. This is the best bakery in this part of the Reston-Herndon. There's a pretty large assortment of generally good and freshly prepared things including a few unusual items. (Hamantaschen year round!) Interior seating is limited and it isn't that great a place to linger. But if you are looking for creative, well-done pastries, it's a good place to visit. read more

I've been ordering from Amphora for over a decade and their ability to customize cakes is top notch. A recent experience has left me wondering about using them in the future. There was a lot of misleading and incorrect information given via email during the design process, response lags, and when the final design was agreed upon and documented, the final execution was not correct. It resulted in a $10 refund (for missing filling) of a $400 cake, where as the itemized amount never listed $10 for filling. It was a very messy process and over inflated cost without exceptional service. They need to work on their response times, clear communication, and itemizing every single part of the cake. read more

I ordered a cake for a party here, having taken in a photo of exactly what I wanted (it was a simple design, but a variation on one they offer already, so I wanted to be clear on the order). The photo was included on my order with their note to staff to "see image for style." Went to pick up the cake day-of event -- no dice. The design was applied not at all how I ordered, but instead exactly like the picture in their book. I expressed my disappointment, which was met with a shoulder shrug from the cashier and a blank look from the chef, with no offer to try to make a correction. I did receive a promise that a manager (the one I'd confirmed the order with, ironically) would contact me. Two weeks later and one email to him, nada. A $200 cake should be prepared as ordered. Steer clear of a bakery that clearly cannot follow directions in print and by photo, and has employees who either shrug off an error or ignore the customer. read more

Hidden in a strip shopping center but well known by many. This local bakery has the bake shop inside with glass walls so you can see the process of the freshness of their goods. I ordered the cupcakes that were very moist but a bit too rich for my liking. The cookies were amazing. I got the chocolate chip and candy cookies and the decorated unicorn sugar cookie. Their decorated ones are amazing with such detail and the other bigger ones (choco chip etc.) are definitely worth trying. I got one floral cupcake that was too pretty to eat. All the decoration on all these desserts are amazing, hence the price...if you're looking for a cheap bakery, this is not your spot. But the cookies are reasonably priced around $2. The bigger decorated cupcakes are almost $5-6 and the regular cupcakes are a little less than $3. read more

Besides the large inviting bakery shop, they Al's have an industrial bakery in the back enclosed in glass. You are encouraged to sit, eat and have some good coffee while watching artists design and create these awesome goodies. We came here for our wedding cake tasting. We were met by Katie who was friendly and open to hearing about our vision. She not only allowed us to comfortably explain what we wanted, she added some great suggestions. The tasting was incredible! Honestly it was more than we could eat! And she boxed the extra to take home. I could go on and on but there was no real need to see anybody else. This was the only tasting we needed. The design options are abundant and beautiful! In about an hour we had tried yummy cake options and designed our own cake! All within our budget! CHECK! I purchased $30 worth of pastries here today. I should have assumed that they were old since it was the holiday weekend. Old is an understatement. I called to ask for an exchange for a fresh pastry and they had none. Cookies were stale as crap. They crumbled in the bag before I could even serve them. They did refund the money on the pastry but when the cashier mentioned about the cookies she was ignored by the manager. The display case looks lovely. The cookies are beautifully decorated. Now that I'm more of a refined dinner party kind of gal, I recently became introduced to the softer, sweeter side of Amphora which is their bakery in Herndon. A virtual treasure trove of fresh-baked pies, cookies, baklava, cakes and more this place is clutch for picking up a sugary treat for a special occasion. They are also one of the few bakeries open past 5 on a Saturday so this makes them especially awesome. Amphora saved the day when I promised I would bring dessert to a dinner party I was attending but instead spent my day shopping instead. I purchased a beautiful mango mousse cake. The cake was light and spongy with coconut flakes dotted without while the mango mousse was velvety smooth with a nice tropical flavor that made us all feel like we were dining on a Caribbean island. They charged $10 extra just for delivery but I said okay and gave them the address. The order was taken 3 days before the party. The person (initials A.L.) who took the order, promised that the cake would be delivered between 10-10:30 am. It was a surprise cake so I did not want to be contacted. On the day of party, waited till 11:30 but no cake! Called the store... only to be told that my cake was at their Vienna location... WHY? because according to them I did not provide delivery address!! What? Are you kidding me?? Donna, the store manager, did not admit any fault but instead arrogantly put the blame on me saying I ordered the cake but never provided them the delivery address!! Really?? The person who took the order should get fired, how stupid this company can be! She also refused me refund! ZERO customer service! Buttercream is supposed to be sweet but this tasted like they left out most of the sugar. People were scraping off the icing, it was embarrassing. Have been a customer since 2010. Discovered this place through the good reviews back then, and it was amazing. The cakes were as fresh and as good as they good get. They were amazing inside out. I never had to think twice about recommending amphora or getting a cake from there for any of our occasions. So when we wanted to get a cake for our anniversary this weekend, it was just the obvious choice. We picked up a mango passion fruit cake which looked pretty(pic posted) The cake wasn't fresh, and the icing from the local grocery stores is better. I hoped the problem was just with the stale overly sweet icing. But no, the cake inside was just as bad. And the mango preservatives they used for the cake were inedibly tangy. We had to throw away the 35$ cake. This was never the case with amphora. But reading the recent reviews, looks like the trend. So sad that I have to find another place for cakes. read more

We got the gingerbread latte cake this year for pickup on the 27th, the icing on it looked old (I.e. the cream cheese frosting on it had those dark parts around the edges that you see when a cake has been sitting there for multiple days at a time). the cake itself tasted horrendously over baked. Absolutely nasty. Nobody who had it liked it. Had the same issue last year when we picked up a strawberry shortcake Christmas week as well, same date, though that one was not a preorder. Dana at Amphora is awful. They need to get someone else to take care of the phone for her or what, she is definitely taking customers out by treating customers the way she is. I will never go back there again just because of her. I called to make a payment for cake arrangement for my daughter's 1st bday. She told me, she was really busy that she has to take care of customers then hung up. The way she spoke was definitely intentional and stressed out. Katie gave me a warm welcome and helped me through the process of selecting a design. Any changes I wanted were easily agreed upon and samples made cake and filling choices a tasty experience. On the day of the shower, the driver was in an auto accident on the way to our venue. The bakery called to let me know that they would be checking the cake before delivery. They delivered a magnificent cake well before the event began. We couldn't decide which flavor was better as they made each tier to our requests. Alright, so a year ago I wrote a glowing review for the Amphora Bakery in Vienna and fast forward a year, well -- last week, I needed a cake for a baby shower and I needed it fast. I had a fantastic experience back then and yet again, this time was no different. Iliyana took my order over the phone and she was patient enough to get me through my order and answer all of my dozen questions. I was told by someone else that 3 days would be enough to fill the order, but when I called 3 days prior to the event, another woman told me that it might not be possible. When I finally spoke with Iliyana, she assured me that Amphora would honor what I was first told. Whew, close one. *procrastinators unite!* I requested a sheep on my cake so I provided the bakery with a picture and Iliyana told me that they would definitely try their best. When I received the cake, I was completely tickled. The sheep was ADORABLE and the cake was just lovely. (the penmanship of the writing could use a little work but everything else made up for it) In addition to the cake, I also ordered a dozen petit fours (they are not pre-cut, so they don't really show their colors like the site does, and slicing them was messy), a dozen 3 inch peanut butter pies (didn't realize they'd be so big), a dozen pink metaliic sprinkled wafers, and a dozen cake pops with cute pink baby feet imprints. I was in such a time frazzle crunch that I ordered my cake plain, but next time, I'd like to try the red velvet and other popular flavors. Yet again, fantastic job Amphora Bakery!
