One of the best places for cakes and pastries i had three cakes today feels as same made by my mom among all i love the raspberry cake made my day, and chocolate cheesecake is good but its too big and sweet i can't enjoy the whole thing. One of the best thing to talk about is ambiance, this is so beautiful because of all decorated cake on one side and clean kitchen and clear view of chef ‍ working are from elevated seating. We have been going to Amphora Bakery for 3 years for all of our birthday and holiday celebration cakes and have never been disappointed. If you want a custom cake, be sure to order 3 days in advance to ensure that they can do it. However, I believe for the regular cakes they make (e.g. carrot cake, opera chocolate, fruit bavarian, hazelnut etc) they can make with 48 hours notice. We like Amphora because they have a balance of chocolate-y decadent and fruity cake offerings. I like fruit; hubby likes chocolate. Aweful taste, terrible customer service and super pricy! Apparently lemon coconut is one of the best cakes here and cake was too dry. Nothing good about the taste and staff were to busy to even write on the cake for a small cake I had to pay $26 plus $2 for a small happy birthday sign since no one could write on the cake and the whole thing is going to trash. My husband and I decided to have a baby shower for our baby boy a little last minute, about 2 weeks out, and I reached out to amphora for some sweets since they did our wedding cake and I know they do a great job. I ordered 20 rice krispy treat pops, 20 chocolate covered strawberries, 20 cupcakes, and 20 chocolate dipped pretzel rods. Everything looked and tasted great! The key lime pie was honestly some of the worst food I've ever eaten. The whipped cream topping tasted like historic houses smell. I'm assuming they added unflavored gelatin to stabilize it or something. The pie filling itself was just okay. Awful aftertaste. Bland crust that had no crunch or flavor. We used to go to Amphora's 3 or 4 times a week for coffee and dessert. At first we really enjoyed the bakery items but soon realized that their items were just not fresh. After getting 4 stale items in a row, we began asking when the various items we were interested in buying were baked. We came to find out that Amphora puts a different colored dot to indicate when an item was baked. We learned that many of their baked items were two and three days old! We have never heard of a bakery selling old item as fresh. We will not be back and could never risk this bakery for a cake for a special occasion like a birthday or wedding. read more

I go to Amphora bakery a LOT. Living a few blocks away doesn't help my pastry addictions. Having said that, I really like their latte... probably better than Starbucks. It's priced well too in my opinion. In the past, I used to go only for the croissants, but lately I've been adding a few things to the mix. While I really like their croissants because it properly reminds me of Paris, their other items aren't the best. Chocolate chip cookies... my husband said he's had better. I would say the same for their peanut butter one. I had a cannoli from there and I like it. Not a fan of their baklava...of course its probably because I grew up tasting baklava made by this Armenian grandmother who lived in our apartment complex. I had a few of their pastries but I can't really say that its all that good. I like the items that I like but you should probably go for yourself to judge. The baked goods don't taste terrible. When I went I tried a cupcake and a cookie and while they both tasted alright, I wasn't impressed. On the upside, the cake bread is fluffy and the size of their baked goods are generous. However, I just don't think it's much better than what you could get from a grocery store's bakery section. The icing, while generous, is overly sweet and they go very heavy on the food coloring. And on top of the garishly colored icing, everything is piped a little sloppily, especially on the cupcakes. Quite frankly, everything looks like it was decorated by a part-time Shoppers bakery worker, including the wedding cakes. There is no finesse or attention to detail on any of the decorations. Overall, the quality of their baked goods is subpar at best and a bit overpriced to boot. The space is pretty interesting, I like how it has two floors and you can look into their baking area. It feels like you're in a bread factory! However, it is also very dark near the display cases and some of their brownies and cupcakes looked really old (the icing was starting to crack around the edges). It's a decent spot to satiate a sweet tooth, but it's not really worth a trip out of your way. read more

This is our go to for all our celebrations. Last week was my daughter's birthday and she was excited to pick out another cake. The day before pick up I was called because the bakery made a mistake and said they were making another cake but just wanted to make sure it was done before pick up and i thanked them for calling to verify a time. Well we picked it up and when we cut into it the cake was wrong! The adults liked the filling but my daughter and kids were not happy. I immediately called and the same person was apologetic and didn't know what happened. I said her birthday is actually Monday and if they can make another one that'd be great and she agreed. Well we cut into it and it was the right cake my daughter designed and she was very happy! I am very thankful they were patient and willing to correct this mistake. We have had multiple issues here, our wedding cake was not what we ordered and was told it couldn't be fixed in time. We appreciated gift cards being offered for the amount of the cake, but we weren't offered a refund. When we tried to use the gift cards, they were declined. We suggested they keep the card and to figure it out later because the staff was calling the other location and the owner for guidance because they "didn't want to get in trouble," and no one was answering the phone. After awhile the owner called back and told them to keep the gift card and charge us cash for the remainder (it was less than $2). We refused to pay cash since we had a second gift card and asked them to remove an item that was around $1 in price. Bad management and bad customer service wasted a lot of our time just trying to pay for a few, small items. read more

Had a smash cake made through Amphora Bakery in Herndon for my godson's 1st birthday. I emailed for a price quote for 3 different custom cake options and I received a response by the next day. Although I thought the small cakes were overly priced, I decided to give Amohora a try. It was simply a more convenient location for me. When I picked up the cake, they allowed me to check it out before I left. I was so pleased with the results! The cute little pumpkin was perfectly crafted and turned out better than I ever could have imagined. Please see picture. Although it was my godson's cake, you know some of us adults had to get our fingers in there for a taste too! And it was good! I'm not a fan of fondant (which it obviously had a lot of for the outside decoration), but the cake itself was rich and moist. There was just enough icing to both hold the cake & decorations together, but also give cake added flavor while eating. I would have liked the icing to have been a tad less sweet though. Great baked goods. Nice shop. High prices and unfriendly staff. They open early enough that you can get very fresh baked goods before work and their baked goods are easily some of the best in the area. The staff is authentic european and with that comes authentic european stuffiness. Put up with that and you've got a seriously good bakery with added cafe. Update: Went for a later morning visit and had a pretty bad experience this time. The dough tasted more sour than before, so not as good. To top it all off, the way management has the cash registers set up, the regular cashiers can't use the credit card machines. I had to pay with cash or have the call me back later to charge the card. Yesterday I went to this bakery for the first time. I wanted to get something for my husband when he returned from St. Louis. The two Texas cupcakes were beautifully adorned with flowers and edible glitter. One was chocolate and one was vanilla. They were great and the frosting was light and delicious. We got our wedding cake and grooms cake (my pic is the grooms cake from my wedding) and both were amazing! Their cakes taste as good as they look. They are moist and fabulous. Their frosting is a true butter cream with butter and sugar, no shortening here. They also use a fondant that is actually good. i usually hate fondant but their is pretty good, for fondant. The chocolate cake with chocolate mousse and raspberry is so very yummy! They also make one of the best carrot cakes I have eaten. The bakery itself is a very cute spot for a pastry and coffee. I was looking for a wedding cake and made an appointment here at Amphora Bakery for a cake tasting appointment. First initial thought when I walked in was how big and clean it was. You walk in and on the left there are a bunch of pastries and baked goods on display. There's also a second floor, which I'm guessing was for extra seating incase people would want to come in and eat while drinking coffee/tea. In the back is where all the baking happens which was pretty cool to watch. We were greeted by the employees and I told them we had an appointment and they just told us to sit on a little couch and wait for our cake coordinator person to come. I was looking at the displays of wedding cakes while waiting and they were all beautiful. Then the cake person came and got our information down and brought out a tray of all different types of cake samples. All of them were delicious but I really like the red velvet with cream cheese frosting (which I was planning to get even before I walked in) and my husband liked their vanilla cake with strawberry buttercream. We ended up getting both! For the main cake, we got red velvet and for the sheet cake for the guests to eat, we got my husband's choice. Amphora Bakery was very accommodating and made this cake process so easy and enjoyable. They delivered my wedding cake to my venue and it was absolutely beautiful and tasty too. If I place a order for cake week in-advance and paid fully. There are certain standards and expectations to set prior to pick-up of the cake. 1. Perfect Shape. ( Cake was tilted which was unpleasant) 2. When asked for Chocolate Fruit Variant then give the customer Chocolate Fruit Variant. NOT Chocolate sponge with vanilla white cream with fruits on top calling in "Chocolate Fruit Variant" 3. NOT Over sweet cake. I would personally not visit again because of the unpleasant experience. Only suggestion to the Management whenever customer is ordering a cake. It is for a happy occasion not casual fast food lunch/dinner meet-up. I came here for a birthday party. Since we live too far from this bakery to just drop my son off and come back to pick him up 2 hours later, we decided to stay. While we waited, my husband and I couldn't resist the delicious smell of their baked good so we bought a strawberry cheesecake. One piece is good for two people and I like the fact that it was not too sweet. We also admired the beautiful wedding cake models that they had at the bakery. For the birthday party, they had the kids decorated the cake. The cake that my son selected was chocolate cake with vanilla icing. Went here for a cake tasting with my friends who are getting married. They allow up to 4 people taste and the portions are huge. I think the 3 of us left half the cake uneaten. We all thought the amaretto was the best. They walked us through pricing of fondant/ribbons/flowers and so many other things you'd never think about to design a cake. They obviously do this a lot. Fondant cakes start at 5.75 pp. Most cakes probably end up around $10 pp for a decent design. See picture! read more

Good Quality Poor Customer Service from Manager Donna. My wife ordered a cake for our daughter as being referred to them from a previous customer and by hearing positive feedback about them from her job at Booze Allen 1/4 mile away. She had saw a picture of the cake she wanted with airbrush, drizzle, and flowers. They replied the cost would be $27.95 for the 7" basic buttercream filled cake, plus $30 for the watercolor effect, $30 for the "drip", and $25 for buttercream flowers on top. For good quality we have no problem paying and just decided to omit the $30 drip and proceed with the order. We live over 45 miles away and I don't know if the cake got warm or bumps on the road but 3 buttercream flowers start falling off the top and began to slide off the the original position (which regretfully wasn't centered in the box). So 5 miles from home we called and they told us we could bring it back. At this point I would say that empathy is a skill need in customer service which I did not receive from one of the cashiers. Hearing that my wife was crying in car distraught she asked well what did you do to this? You had to have been driving had through turns. Being in hospitality myself I did not blame either party I stated that this is the problem and we need to get it resolved. Since the cake was split in half and only half decorated I said keep this in case it is needed and call me to let me know my options. Monday I received no calls nor my wife even though I was told there were calls and voicemails left. They decided to put flowers on the other half of cake. Which would've been fine but they threw out half of our cake without asking that we paid for. Then over charged $40 dollars instead of $25 for the new flowers (that you could tell had been rushed). When my wife went in to complain Donna basically shrugged and said they threw it out and after a lot of back and forth offer a cake that was much cheaper and less expensive than the cake that was thrown out. I understand things happen in the service industry being that I work in the service industry myself. There was no since of concern for the situation no apologies for throwing out the cake. I felt dismissed, angry, and not valued as a customer. I would email the store before leaving this review but it is going to be intercepted by Donna who I had the lowest customer service from. In conclusion I was overcharged $20 (was not given an itemized receipt when I asked) We lost money on the original cake because they threw it out. The biggest lost is now we feel like we were taken advantage off in a bad situation. I know as things stand right now we would make sure none of our friends, my clients or hers, co workers at booze, or our social media followings do business with this company. I understand that this sometimes reaches the people who do care so I can update this review but as for now we are extremely dissatisfied with our experience. read more

We stopped in here for a coffee and to split something sweet. The latte was a bit too hot, but it was Illy and after it cooled, it was quite tasty. The cookie we split was good, but not amazing. There is a small seating area upstairs that is a bit too "sad estate sale" to be a comfortable place to hang out. (Maybe that's the point?) The chairs are beat down to hell and don't fit with the tables at all. It was, however, nice to watch the bakers work below us. I tried their chocolate dome thing and it was pretty okay, the dome hard shell did not taste like good quality chocolate, but the inside was nice, it was a very light whipped white chocolate mouse . A bit overpriced, i paid 6$ for a dome the size of my 6 yr old nephew's fist. I recently discovered this place and am completely hooked. Our family loves yule log cakes during the holidays and this place did not disappoint. Their cake pops and assortment of other goodies were all delicious. I am not a cookie person so did not care much for their cookies but everything that I have tried including macaroons, fancy little cakes and pies, cupcakes, and brownies are simply scrumptious and visually decadent. I've been here a few times and while their sweets are very good, the employees are rude. I had to pay $2 extra for another tea bag because they only had decaf tea, and while that's fine, it was the way they said that I'd need to pay more and the difficulty it was to have a little milk in my tea that really set a bad tone.
