I've enjoyed the baked goods from Amphora Bakery for several decades - primarily the location in Vienna, VA that no longer exists. What I just recently discovered - is the Amphora Bakery in Herndon, VA - is and has been the primary baking location all this time (one of the ladies working behind the counter shared that info tidbit with me when I visited). One of the things that is indelibly etched into my brain is their Chocolate-Raspberry cake - which I've not had for decades (my Mom purchased one from them for my birthday one year - and that cake made an impression on me!). They still make Chocolate-Raspberry cakes. I wasn't in the market for a whole cake - but they also make cupcake versions of some of their flavors - so I opted for the Chocolate-Raspberry Cupcake. Of course it was rich and tasty! The Raspberry creme frosting was decadent! One thing I will ding them on - is they only accept cash and traditional credit cards. They do not accept any form of digital payment (Apple Pay for example). I politely advised them while I was paying that they should accept digital payment - pretty sure nothing will change on that front. Not that most people would - but if you did want to consume your baked goods on the premises - there are some tables and chairs available. Service was good. #AmphoraBakery

So stale. I've never eaten a cake this bad before. The service was terrible. I asked the employee what their favorite cake was, and they said they don't eat here; now I understand why. Normally I don't leave reviews even if I don't like something, but I'm making an exception just for this place. -10/10"

Have always heard of this plzce but never had a chance to go. Their desserts are okay. A bit too sweet for my taste. This place however is decorate in very cute decors and their cakes and cupcakes are decorated so cute as well. Staff were friendly. The creme brulee doesn't have the crunchy sugar on the top and their creme brulee is a bit more cakey than I would like.

We had just finished lunch in the area and were looking for a coffee shop that served desserts. After searching, we finally found a place that satisfied our sweet cravings. The bakery was on the ground floor with additional seating upstairs, making it quite spacious. While there were many colorful and attractive displays of cakes around the shop, some of them appeared to be old and covered in dust. We ordered coffee, individual-sized cheesecake, and another sweet treat, which were okay but could have been more outstanding. Overall, the service could have been better and more memorable.

How is it possible that there is a nearby bakery that I didn't know about?  So, much was my delight to discover and visit the Amphora Bakery in Herndon.  Amphora, locally, is a very well known name for diners which happened to feature a lot of cakes.  And, now I know where they came from.  The Amphora bakery has a very wide selection and all the ones I tasted were good, including, the canolois, cream puffs, napoleons, fruit tarts and brownies.  The whole storefront was also so festive with seasonal decorations both on and around the cakes and cupcakes.  Another great aspect of the Amphora bakery is the room upstairs that you can rent.  We had a great event up there with the goodies flowing from the downstairs to the upstairs to down the hatch!  Plus, from this second floor area, you can overlook the working part of the bakery.  So, while you are appreciating the beauty and taste of the many, many baked goods, you can attest to all the people who are working to make them.  The bakery is located in a spot with plenty of parking so you don't have to waddle too far to your car after indulging in all the great treats.

Fruit Bavarian Cake - Velvety Bavarian cream, tart raspberry preserves, layers of yellow cake, fresh fruit.

I have been coming to Amphora Bakery for years. Every-time I go, the one cake I have been ordering during many occasions is the Fruit Bavarian Cake. I am usually trying to stay away from deserts that just taste like sugar overload. This cake is the perfect balance with just the right amount of sweet, tart, refreshing, and light. I love how soft and fluffy the yellow cake is, the slight tart from the raspberry preserve filling, the sweet cream and almond pieces complimenting it all together and finishing it up with refreshing fruits. An absolute perfect cake for any occasions. Anytime I get it, everyone has loved it and ask where I get it from. The service here is outstanding also, I picked it up the day before Christmas Eve with no issue, the lady behind the counter was very friendly and welcoming and getting my order quickly so I was able to be in an out.

BLUF: A nice place to sit down for some good chat with your favorite people, but the cakes were nothing special. The ones in the cases looked nice, but the cakes were dry & unremarkable on the inside. The buttercream was kinda blah. Service was 50/50. First staff member looked really annoyed that we were asking questions about the goods & was not at all welcoming nor hospitable. The other who eventually served us was absolutely wonderful & quite the opposite of her co-worker. She seemed like a person who would go out of her way to make sure you left a happy customer. While the cakes, cookies, cupcakes looked appealing & much better than I could ever create, they didn't seem as unique & tasty as you would expect a specialty bakery to push out. The cookies looked like those you could get at a supermarket but more expensive. The lemon blueberry cake that I had was bland, dry, and the buttercream filling was sugared out- gritty, dry, just sugary with weak flavors barely coming through. While it looks like a nice little cafe you'd want to sit & enjoy, they don't sell slices. The small rounds & cupcakes are your best bet, but nothing like tasting an actual slice of their cakes. Based on the small, pricey mini that I chose, I'd not splurge on their full size cakes. As full size cakes go, the price seemed fair, but be aware that your cake may just be so-so. I've enjoyed more delicious cakes from a grocery store & paid less. If you're in the area, need a break, want a cup of java, and have a sweet tooth, it's a decent place to try. If you want stronger coffee, Weird Brothers is across the way. There's also a place next door to grab a bite to eat. Should I ever go back to the Amphora diner, I'd probably have a slice of cake. Why? 'Cause it's just what you do at a diner! Maybe the cakes taste better after indulging in all the salty diner yums, but at this point, I'd find another bakery from which to purchase a specialty cake.

My daughter requested a very specific type of cake for her birthday, and I called Amphora 2 days before her birthday to beg them to make a custom cake. They came through with a beautiful cake that was also delicious! The bakery itself is so cute, with so many options.

An unexpectedly large bakery with a separate seating area upstairs for enjoying coffee and the bakery item of your choice. They offer specialty cake designs to order, seasonal themed cakes to carry out and decorated cupcakes and cookies plus other bakery items like turnovers and scones to eat in or take away. The cake designs are particularly extravagant and specialty designs can be quite pricey. The cupcakes were well priced and delicious. Sadly the cookies, though beautifully decorated, were not very flavorful. Overall the value for money is just average, though if you are looking for an extravagant specialty cake design this bakery might just be the answer to your prayers!

Excellent desserts, esp. the baklava! Prices are now more reasonable, too. I almost always eat there, either inside or out.

I'm glad I was with them, since the location is tucked away up the stairs and would be easy to miss if you are passing by. However, inside was very airy and spacious with many cozy options for seating. I ordered my chai with oat milk and a cinnamon roll from the friendly cashier. She asked if I wanted to warm my roll, and I agreed with the suggestion. Once we had our order, we headed to the couch to enjoy our brunch. The chai was delicious and had a nice peppery kick. It even came with a little cookie! I also really enjoyed the cinnamon roll, which was especially packed with spiced goodness at the warm center. I loved that everyone from studying students to large families could enjoy the indoor and outdoor space. Even with a fairly steady flow of customers, we were able to relax in the sunny couch area without feeling rushed. I would definitely return here for another chai and some breakfast in the future!
