La Madeleine is a great spot to get together for a healthy meal.  There are a lot of choices and options and everything is quick and easy when you order at the counter.  It is nice to be able to see all the food which can help make your decision.  I chose a combination of a Caesar salad and accompanying lentil soup and fruit salad.  You can choose any three to make your own combo but I enjoyed all of the three options I selected.  Mine was dished out right away but if you have to wait, you just take a number, find a table and they will bring your food to you.  There is a self-serve water and utensil/napkin area with free bread slices if you would like.  The space has both large and small tables.  We had a meeting with 8 people and we fit easily and had no problems hearing each other as the restaurant was not overly noisy.  La Madeleine Reston is easily located and there is a very big parking lot right out front. read more

Super impressed by La Madeleine! We went here for Mother's Day Dinner. This spacious French café has a large selection and great deals in a super cool café atmosphere. I got the chicken Parisian along with a potato Galette. The chicken sandwich was great except for the bacon. It was so thick... next time I will get it without the bacon. The food is delicious! I ordered a croque monsieur and a sacher torte parfait. The sandwich bread was perfectly toasted and the ham and cheese melts in your mouth. The Sacher torte was sweet and a great combination of textures. My only problem was that my spoon was a bit big for the parfait. It all looked just as amazing as it tasted. The service was also pleasant. I'm pretty shy so I tend not to talk too much when I order, but the staff greeted me as soon as I walked in and were friendly. I had a bit of trouble hearing the man while he was taking my order, but he was friendly nonetheless. The staff was not rude as other reviews suggest, just a bit to the point at times. Ambiance was also lovely. The interior is well decorated to feel like a little French cafe with lots of indoor seating. I chose to eat outside where they had just a couple tables. I was a little confused where I was supposed to go to order at first, but I figured it out eventually. They could definitely use some better signage for that! I've been meaning to try La Madeleine since I first discovered it and I just so happened to be in the mood for a coffee and something sweet and remembered that I was close to it so decided to pop in. Definitely a little confusing when you walk in as you're not really sure where to go or where to stand for both dining in and takeout but I promptly figured it out. I ordered a few baked goods to go and a small cold brew and let me tell you that the coffee was DELICIOUS as were both the palmier and the linzer cookie ... literally had to stop myself from eating them all because they were that good! Really disappointed with how much this place has gone downhill lately. The food portions have noticeably gotten smaller. I ordered a bowl and was given what was basically a cup-sized portion, then told it was because the "bowl size is different." That explanation honestly felt misleading. The service has also declined. There is a cleaning lady who comes across friendly at first, but the moment you ask for something, her attitude completely changes and she becomes very rude and unpleasant. On top of that, the coffee is almost never hot or fresh anymore. Between the declining food quality, smaller portions, and poor service, this place just isn't what it used to be. I'm a local resident, and every time I visit this location, the experience is consistently disappointing. No one greets you when you walk in, the store always feels understaffed, and even when employees see you, they tend to ignore you. It's a shame, because this could be a great spot. The food is average, but the service is what really keeps me from coming during lunch hours. We sent in a complaint to the health dept and they investigated a few days later. The result of the investigation included a violation regarding the cold handling of the following items "1) in the walk-in cooler: commercial lentil soup (44f), wild rice (44f), sliced ham (44f), diced tomatoes (44) 2) on ice at the salad bar: Romanov sauce (47f), yogurt (46f)" with the comment that "THIS IS A REPEAT VIOLATION. Wanted to grab something quick on my work break and liked the menu offerings. I was not disappointed. The restaurant is a cross between a cafeteria style/bakery ordering and a cozy rustic atmosphere, with lots of seating in different rooms that make it feel more private and personal away from other crowds. The employees were super kind and gave me recommendations on dinner choices. I got the croque monsieur and seasonal chicken salad and both were delicious and exactly what I was looking for. The pricing was affordable. And the bakery still had dessert options despite being 1 hour to close. A little unorganized. Staff was not very helpful to us first-timers - even after we said we didn't know how this worked. This was also where the not knowing how this place worked kind of bit us. What I ordered was apparently on the "cafeteria line" and therefore was given to me immediately at the cash register after paying. My husband's meal was made to order, so it came out to our table a good bit later. If I wanted to eat my food hot, I had to start eating right away while my husband sat and waited for his food. Or, I could wait for him and then eat my food cold. I don't understand, their knowing his food would take a bit longer, (and the fact we were together) why they didn't just wait and bring all our food out together when his was ready. Let me start with a positIve: this is one of my favorite local breakfast spots; it has a good ambience and great prices (better than most competitors). However, this place is dirty. The tables are not clean and are filled with crumbs, as the windows, too. Also, customer service especially from the gentlemen who's takes the food orders in the morning is terrible; he's unfriendly, hard to understand, and doesn't seem to care to be there. He is off putting. Also, the food and drink/coffee temperature aren't hot. Yes, this place can get busy and have a high volume of people (after 9am), and that might be a reasoning for the accumulated dirt, lukewarm food and testy service, but if the restaurant is serious about improving and holding it to its brand, changes need to be made such as: + Hire more employees so they're not spread too thin + Replace the gentlemen at the front who's taking food orders in the morning with someone who's happy to be there, positive and, inviting. This gentlemen is the first opinion and introduction to the restaurant and his lack of interest, care, and unfriendly attitude spoils the experience of the place from the get go. + Lastly, have a routine and scheduled clean ups. Perhaps with additional (quality) hires these changes can be made, but until then, this place needs work. * Because I care about the uniqueness of La Madeleine I write this 2nd (stronger) review. Parking: there is a ton of parking! It is located in a shopping center, near the container store! It is in the corner of the mall strip. Seating: there is a ton of tables and seats! I like how there are different areas, away from other people. You can enjoy your conversation without feeling so exposed. The French vibe is very cute! Food: there is a variety of things on the menu! I like their choices of soup and sandwiches. My friends did not like their hot chocolate, they said it just tasted like warm milk. Bathroom: there are bathrooms in the back. I moved to Reston in 2011 and everyday, I would pass by this cute, quaint, corner cafe on my way to work. I would practice pronouncing "La Madeleine" over and over. Well one winter evening, my daughter and granddaughter wanted to grab a bite to eat. So I told them, please choose someplace close to where I live. My daughter said, how about La Madeleine? Ok, I said. I have been wanting to try it. Well, we go and immediately I'm attracted to the warm atmosphere, the cozy wooden structure and French decor. I approached the service counter to see the ample selection French pastries and sandwiches, soups and salads, a variety drinks to include the BEST coffee ever. The server was extremely polite and explained how ordering worked. We ordered and sat at a table near the well-lit, burning fireplace. This made our meal extra special. The experience was completely enjoyable. From that time on and even till now, I make my weekly stop in to La Madeleine for coffee and one of the scrumptious blueberry muffins. During the warm season I enjoy eating outside while reading and sipping my coffee. Sometimes, I just sit and watch the cars and people walk by with their dogs. My husband has fond memories of eating at La Madeleine so he treated me to lunch! I've never been to one, but it's a cute fast casual spot. I ordered the chicken Parisian with tomato basil pasta salad and my husband ordered the Chicken Riviera with a cup of tomato basil soup. We split everything so we could try it all. The food was great and came out super fast. The whole sandwich and a side is pretty hearty so I would recommend ordering the half sandwich and side. I order from this location a lot and have been coming here since I was a kid but lately I've noticed that the quality of the meals have definitely gone downhill. The crust of the quiche is a bit soggy and the pesto pasta which has been an absolute favorite is completely bland in flavor. I'm not sure if it's because they use less sauce so the pasta is more on the dry side?.. But the staff also disregarded my requests. The soups however, are still delicious and on par.
