I think this is a solid Indian restaurant with a few caveats. Nonetheless, this place is a great introduction into the vegetarian Indian arena, and I definitely would recommend trying it out. First things first, I am a HUGE Indian food fan. I would eat it at every meal if that was even possible. And I've been wanting to try Amma's out for quite some time but somehow no one will eat vegetarian Indian with me. However, my mother and her husband came into town this past weekend and what do you know, they ONLY wanted vegetarian food. So I jumped at the opportunity. Food: Since we were all quite hungry, we started with the Samosa Chat with a few Mango Lassis. Both were awesome, but the samosa appetizer in particular was cool because it appeared to have broken up samosas cooked with a bunch of different yummy ingredients. It was definitely unique. Then for the entrees, we got the Vegetable Briyani (interesting use of mint), Mutter Paneer (rich and creamy), and the Dal Palak with a few sides of Naan. I thought all of the entrees were great, however, it immediately struck me that they could spice a lot more aggressively than they do (particularly the briyani). I really enjoy the flavors of Indian food but these were seasoned on the tamer side. Not the end of the world but still quite noticeable. Also, I wanted my meal extra spicy, and it definitely did not come out extra spicy. I think they thought they gave me extra spicy, but my tolerance must be unusually high. Finally, their naan is not my favorite. I really like a soft naan with some good garlic in it, and theirs was more like pita bread or something. What I really enjoyed though was their selection. I couldn't quite make up my mind on what I wanted, but I sure as hell am coming back to try those dosas. The table next to us was crushing it on the food ordering, and the dosas looked killer. Service: A few people mentioned this and it's accurate: You don't appear to have just one server. There seemed to be a million people working there, and a different person brings out the drinks than brings out the food than brings out the bread. It didn't really affect service, but it makes you wonder how many people are hiding in the back room. There are a few other places in the area that similarly serve all vegetarian Indian cuisine. This is a Southern Indian restaurant I have been meaning to try for a while. While I will freely admit that the parking lots leave a good bit to be desired as do the building facades in the area, I think it was worth it. The interior is nothing to write home about but they do manage to make the small space feel larger yet cozy at the same time. I'm not so sure about the old paper place mats under the glass table top cover. I will mention they do keep the bathrooms clean. Those of you not familiar with Southern Indian cuisine should spend some time looking over the menu and asking a lot of questions of the wait staff, or better yet, show up for a buffet at which you will be able to see and try many of the different items on the menu. I am sure you will find something that you like and you will not leave hungry. Their buffet prices are very reasonable, especially during the week. They have an all vegan buffet on Wednesdays. All their food is vegetarian, which is to be expected, but they will gladly point out the vegan menu items and advise which items can be made in a vegan preparation. The servers were quiet, efficient and not at the table unless needed. That being said, our table was well looked after. The Southern Indian style is much different than what many in the Midwest at least would consider typical 'curry.' It is much lighter on the oils, uses a good bit of coconut, is spicy in a different way, and has a lot of really interesting appetizers, and of course the dosa. The dosa is pronounced dosha and is a very large crispy but flexible, thin crepe-like item wrapped around some really interesting fillings. The most common one I have seen is a cumin colored, mildly spiced potato mash that is quite filling (Masala Dosa). They come with some of the traditional tomato soup (Vada Sambar) and some fun dipping sauces including the spice-cooling coconut (Nariyal Chutney). The nariyal chutney is thick, but silky, has a definite shredded coconut texture and is slightly sweet and soothing. Many of the appetizers appear to be fried or look like donuts, however, they use chickpea flour and they are never oily. They also have vegetable pancakes. All of these items are great to dip in the many sauces and soups. I had a Masala coffee tonight for the first time and it was truly excellent. I highly recommend it. The spices were aromatic and invigorating. IT had a great depth of flavor and was not overpowering. It went well with my food. I had the Aloo Bondas for an appetizer. These are the size of golf balls, coated in chickpea flower, filled with a potato mash, spices, lentils, and cashew, then fried. They were very good. For dinner I had the Spring Dosa which was the traditional crepe filled with thread noodles and mixed vegetables. It was well spiced, had a great flavor, and was cooked, yet had that nice crunch as well. It sort of reminded me of a Thai stir fry filling. This came with the Vada Sambar, and a couple dipping sauces. I will note that we were in a larger group and the food sort of showed up as it was made, and not in any particular order, nor did it arrive at the same time. This may not be the case with a smaller table. I would recommend getting shared appetizers so that you don't feel like you need to wait for the rest of the food to arrive. At the end of the meal we walked up to the cash register at the front and told the gentleman what we ordered and he rang it up. I found this slightly odd, but again, perhaps our larger table was a special case? I think it is well worth a visit. read more

So here's the deal: I'm South Indian (Kerala). Amma's serves South Indian food. So when I am sick and tired of all the North Indian offerings typically available at area Indian restaurants, I head to Amma's to get my motherland craving met. Trust me when I tell you that what you eat at Amma's is pretty much similar to what you'd get back in South India (i.e., Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Lakshadweep and Puducherry.) If you're a foodie wimp and don't like to try different dishes, then don't go to Amma's. Tips: 1. Try the Pongal (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pongal_%28dish%29). It's a great alternative to the same ole bed of white rice. 2. Order one of their dosas (http://www.ammaskitchen.us/Dosas.html). If you get the buffet, it's free, one order only though. I recommend the Paper Masala Dosa. 3. Check out their vegan buffet on Wednesdays. The main difference from the regular buffet is the omission of dairy. Some items still may contain dairy, so double check. 4. You know a place is really good when the locals and natives eat there. The best time to get a slice of India (demographics wise) is on Sundays. The variety of patrons really remind me of being at a restaurant back home in Kerala. 5. The stars of the buffet have to be, hands down for me, the Bagara Baingan (eggplant) and Gobhi Manchurian (fried cauliflower tossed in homemade special Manchurian sauce. Have no idea what I ate, but everything was delicious. This was my first taste of SOUTH Indian food. All that chicken tikka masala and saag paneer apparently is more north India. South Indian food is more into frying and known for these ginormous crepes stuffed with potatoes called dosas. Because this South Indian fare was new to most of us, we left it up to our two Indian friends to feed us and feed us well. By golly did they rise to the occasion. Our group of 7 did family style and ended up each paying 11 bucks for dinner not including tip (TALK ABOUT A GOOD DEAL). For appetizers, we shared a basket of mini spiced idli (steamed rice cakes), which can be dipped in sambar or a yogurt sauce. The sambar was so good, my friend started eating the leftover as soup. We judged him hard for a brief 2 seconds until our Indian friends confirmed that it IS often eaten as soup. We then shared a basket of assorted donuts. Yes, Indian donuts ...'mazeballs. Then came the samosa chaat (note I'm still talking about appetizers). After a brief lull our dosas came out--we got the masala dosa and rava masala dosa, and we tore them apart like hyenas. And THEN came the more familiar triage of curries: palak paneer, channa masala, and some kind of dal (lentils). These were served with rice AND naan... specifically garlic naan AND onion kulcha. *Deep breath* There was not a single item I didn't enjoy wholeheartedly. Cincinnati does it again with great Indian food. I've yet to try anything subpar (I'm sure they exist, but there are so many good places!). Only docking a star for poor room temperature control. Despite consuming so much, we were freezing our butts off by the end of the meal. Still worth it, though. Neighborhood is sketchy at night, but like I said, WORTH IT. To start, I'm Indian by birth, never lived there, but visited more times that I can count. Lots of people don't know that there's a difference between north and south Indian food. I was looking for a good place to take friends that had never had south Indian food and I was looking for a good idli/dosa place. We ate 1 item from almost every part of the menu. Here's the run down: Mini Idlis, Samosa Chat, Dahi Vada, Tomatoes and Peas Uthapam, Paper Dosa, Paneer Dosa, Pongal, Aloo Ghobi, & Ras Jamun. EVERYTHING was AWESOME. I rarely give a place 5 stars, let alone an Indian restaurant. We can't wait to go back and try all the things that we didn't eat the first time around. For a small Indian place in a mediocre neighborhood, this place is a GEM! I'm so thankful it exists so close to my work. Firstly, it's ALL-vegetarian (and they have Vegan Wednesdays). If, however you are like me, and NOT a vegetarian, don't worry. The food is so flavorful and unique, you will leave here STUFFED, and won't even be thinking of meat. The staff is friendly enough, but the decor is somewhat bland and the booths are uncomfortable... so, it's not exactly 'fancy'. Let me preface this review with the facts...I'm not a vegetarian, and I'm no expert on South Indian cuisine. My experience at Amma's for their lunch buffet was good, not great. But if I were a vegetarian living in Cincinnati, I think I would have a very different opinion! First of all, everything here is vegetarian which is kind of a non-starter for my husband (make sure you tell your less adventurous friends before you take them here...). So I came to Amma's with a few girlfriends for lunch. The buffet was kind of small for an Indian buffet...I'm used to seeing many more items. The quality of the food was pretty good...I particularly liked the paneer dish which seemed to be served in some sort of butter curry sauce, like a makhani. I also liked the beets. But the naan was not warm, and some of the fried foods were kind of flavorless. The best part of our lunch was that the buffet came with a complimentary dosa, which is like an Indian crepe filled with curry-flavored potatoes (sorry, I know this is not a very good explanation, but it's the easiest approximation I have for a dosa....). I happen to really like dosas, so I know it's hard to find South Indian cuisine like Amma's has, so I appreciate that. The next time I'm craving a dosa I will be back. Amma's Kitchen is legit. One of the only South Indian restaurants in Cincy (other than Udipi Cafe and Ruchi Mess) and all vegetarian too. I've only been here for the lunch buffet. Usually there are at least 1 or 2 lentil based dishes but there is a ton of variety to choose from, and all very tasty. I can't remember all of them but the cauliflower dish is good! Also 1 free dosa is included with the buffet (but you have to ask for it) - the free dosa is a very thin, crisp crepe made from lentils and they stuff it with spiced mashed potato. Service could be better. Last time when I asked for our free dosas, I thought the woman either didn't hear me or was ignoring me because she didn't acknowledge me at all. But she brought the dosas to our table a few minutes later. This is a favorite of mine especially when I'm eating with a vegetarian. If you get the buffet, prepare to be stuffed!! read more

Cincinnati has quite a few solid Indian buffet options, and Amma's is no exception. The lunch buffet is all vegetarian but if you don't see that as a perk, don't let it dissuade you, I can tell you my meat-eatin' friends loved it all the same. If vegan they clearly label the items that are vegan friendly, super helpful. When I went to Amma's they had quite the crowd, and a diverse one at that (multiple families with young kids, what I assumed was a large group of coworkers out for lunch, a few groups of an older generation)- I definitely take it as a testament to the food. This place is amazing. Every weekday that my boyfriend has off for lunch, which unfortunatley is only once a month, we go to the lunch buffet. Being vegetarian, it is so nice to have so many delicious options. The Vegan Wednesdays are great and noone would be able to tell dairy is not used!! The last time I had South Indian food in Cincinnati, it was in this very same location, but it was Udipi, not Amma's Kitchen. That was at least 4 years ago. Since my first visit a few months back, I've now been to Amma's a few times, and I'd say this is one of the restaurants I'm most excited by in the city right now. I've only been for the lunch buffets, but they vary the selections you can choose from and the flavors have been fantastic. With all vegetarian all the time - and vegan one day a week, even - this is a particularly great option for those of you who don't eat meat. There are about 8 entree options on the buffet, as well as appetizer and bread options, and you can ask for a fresh dosai (regular or spicy) to be made when you arrive. I find that typical Indian buffets (which are usually North Indian) are becoming more bland, so Amma's has been a welcome surprise because of the number of unique dishes and the kick they provide. The times I've been, there have been between 1/10 and 1/4 of the tables taken, which is too bad. I wouldn't go for the atmosphere - it's pretty basic inside and located in a not-so-happening section of Roselawn - but I'd definitely recommend you go for the food. read more

This is by far my favorite Indian place in Cincinnati. It's all vegetarian, which might turn some away, but I love it. Their chili paneer is one of my favorites. Their malai kofta is the closest I've had in Cincinnati that tastes like the same I've had in India. It even comes with sour pickle on the side! Yum! Try the dosa too. So badly want to give five stars, but it isn't quite perfect. Let me first be clear, I LOVE this place. I go nearly every chance I get and am nearly drooling as I have been thinking about their food. The restaurant serves South Indian cuisine (hard to find in Cincinnati) and is pure vegetarian all the time (vegan wednesdays at lunch). The food is very good and very different from your typical indian restaurant. They do a daily lunch buffet that includes an option for a dosa (Indian style crepe) at not extra cost. The buffet changes daily and has a great spread of south indian and indochinese food. During busy times, the buffet goes through food quickly and keeps very fresh. In slow times later in the day, the buffet sometimes suffers as things begin to get a bit old and can dry out. A consistent favorite on the buffet is Gobi Manchurian (indochinese style battered and fried cauliflower). Ordering a la carte the way to go if you already know what you want to eat. Some favorites include mini idli, masala dosa and vada. The decor leaves something to be desired and the location isn't great either. A few years ago there was an abandoned building next door with the name "Phat Daddy's." Things have improved in recent years as a new bank has opened up in the adjacent lot. Do not let the exterior scare you away, you will be rewarded with a delicious and filling dining experience! I'll recommend ending your meal with a tea or south indian chicory coffee! read more

But for real. I love Amma's. Now I've only ever been here for buffet, but it is fantastic. Even if you are a meat eater or a vegan-food-general-disliker I promise you will still like Amma's. Here's the explanation for that: most Indian restaurants can rely on the use of lots of heavy cream and ghee and the natural flavors that come with meats to make their dishes taste good, but because Amma's is veggie/vegan, it allows you to really taste the flavors of your favorite Indian dishes (plus some you've never heard of) to their fullest. As my traditional-pot-roast-loving father said: I really wouldn't have even noticed there wasn't meat unless you told me. Score one for the herbivores. Perfect! I don't usually eat vegetarian meals but a friend suggested trying out this place for dinner over the weekend. So glad I was able to branch out from my typical go-to Indian places. Amma means mom in Hindi and what I my friends told me, this tastes just like a Southern Indian Mom's cooking. I had the dinner for two. If you go and it isn't a buffet day, go with it! Not only is it the best bang for your buck, there is also a ridiculous amount of variety. We had a potato pancake starter, soup, a spicy potato crepe (my personal favorite), three different curries, naan, and dessert. All this for just $32! My bf and I both had enough and still some for leftovers. Had gone on 12/6/2014 for Dinner- They made the food really good and delicious. I loved the Rasam. Restroom is well maintained. Normally indian restaurants -lot of things will not work. This is totally different. They all behave professional. Owner - Muthu -met him today- he deserves to be recognized. his success should be notated somewhere the way he came up and started-he is a great entrepreneur. I went again today for Lunch 12/7/2014- Amazing -the Lunch place was full. Total restaurant was fully packed. i have never seen such a big crowd ...They treat really well. They give you Dosa or Masala dosa additional to Buffet. They treat people really kind, nice and courteous. Normally in indian restaurant they might behave still Indian in India- but these people are absolutely different. Very good food, with something for just about everyone. South Indian is traditionally entirely vegetarian, with many different flavors and dishes; its a lot different from the "stuff on top of rice" curries and other North Indian dishes that most people are familiar with in Cincinnati. Amma's food is consistently good, the staff consistently friendly and attentive, and the variety and freshness of the fare can be a real relief from the standard North Indian restaurants in this city who pride themselves on ridiculous portions as a consolation for otherwise subpar food. I went to lunch at Ammas with a bunch of otherwise meat-loving coworkers, and they were all ecstatic about the food and have all begun to visit Ammas on a regular basis. Sometimes the word "vegetarian" can get a bad rap, especially in Cincinnati; visions of bland tofu wraps, heavily-processed veggie burgers and other completely useless food substitutes come to mind. Here, the word "vegetarian" simply means "look at all this stuff we can make from fresh ingredients that is delicious and just happens to not include meat as an ingredient." Think about it: When you order a pizza, how many people actually order a meat-lovers edition, and how many get one with cheese, green peppers, mushrooms, onions, etc? Brace yourself: MANY OF YOU EAT VEGETARIAN DISHES EVERY DAY. The flavors and sweetness of South Indian cuisine will make you an instant convert, and Ammas is doing a fantastic job of representing it. Amma's Kitchen is some of the best veggie only food you can find in Cincinnati. Top it off that it's some of the better Indian in the area and some of the only South Indian in Cincinnati and you've a mix that's wonderful! I've mostly hit this place for lunch buffet with now former co-workers, but have been in for dinner for the Aloo Ghobi several times as well. This trip I went with the Ghobi Manchurian (Chinese style cauliflower.) The food was tasty, the service a bit slow this night, but well worth it. The crew I went with was spectacular, funny and laid back! Great group of strangers! :-p I also had a dosa, a spicy masala dosa, quite different from the typical masala dosa which comes out nice a puffy with potatoes and looking like the biggest burrito ever. This dosa was a large flat triangle and clearly had hot pepper flakes throughout. Tasty! Besides the typical water I also has both the Mango Lassi and Rose Lassi. While the Rose Lassi was good, I have to say the Mango Lassi really hit the spot. Thick smooth and delicious! I've found Amma's Kitchen to be one of my favorite places. So I work in Reading and there aren't a ton of food options in that area if you don't want fast-food. I feel lucky to have found this place. For under $10, I had a pretty tasty Indian buffet lunch. Amma's is also vegetarian and has some vegan options. Everything I ate tasted good, not really spicy, but flavorful. The breaded cauliflower was awesome and so was the eggplant curry. I probably wouldn't go out of my way to eat here, but I definitely enjoy that it's close to me now. The part of town restaurant's in isn't exactly scenic. read more

Always love Amma's! Service is swift and polite, good value, and the lunch buffet always has a nice variety including some of the freshest cut fruit and all vegetarian options. Wednesday is vegan day at the buffet. Amma's is close to where I work so it makes for a great lunch out with my coworkers. I've also been there a handful of times at dinner with my son where we've ordered off the menu and the experience and service has been wonderful. My favorite dishes are Paneer Butter Masala and Gobi Manchurian - a fabulous Indo-Chinese dish of cauliflower in a sweet & spicy sauce. read more

This is such a hole-in-the-wall restaurant, I missed it twice when I was looking for it. But apparently it is VERY popular....and now I understand why! The food here is FANTASTIC! And it's one of the few places in the Cincinnati Area that has good south indian food. This is definitely one of my new favorite Indian restaurants in Cincinnati! The service is also excellent. I went there for dinner and had veggie cutlets, chole batura, and a dessert. And their mango lassi is pretty damn good too. I liked Amma's, but I didn't love it. Being accustomed to North Indian fare, I think I didn't quite understand what I was in for. But a vegetarian friend suggested we try it, so she, her husband, Date, and I met (we all love Indian food; typically of the North variety) to give it a whirl. While we knew it was a veg-friendly establishment, I don't think any of us realized that it was strictly a vegetarian restaurant. (This is OK for me, seeing as the dish I get is vegetarian anyway.) I think our eyes were a-lot-a-bit bigger than our stomachs, but it was all pretty good. We got Onion Masala Dosa to share (it was great to try, but it was HUGE), and we each got a dish for dinner. I generally order Paneer Makhani from our North Indian friends, but I thought I would go a different route since the fare was different than what I was used to. Therefore, I opted for the Chili Paneer, which was deep fried and more closely resembled a Chinese dish. Not a bad thing; merely an observation, and not what I expected. My favorite thing about it, was that it was deliciously spicy. It teetered on the precipice of too spicy, as I beaded up with sweat, but it was a nearly perfect spice level. Perhaps next time I will opt for the Paneer Makhani (it is not on the menu, but our server ensured it can be ordered anyway) to see how it measures up. The location isn't great, but the service was pretty outstanding and the food was pretty good, too. It seems unfair to hand out 3 stars to this place, but 4 stars feels too generous. I really wish I could give 3.5 stars. As I said, I liked the food I got. I am more than happy to give this place another shot. read more

OMG Yes. This is a good place to go. Like this is a real dump city for veggie food, in general, but this place is amazing. I was just here for the lunch buffet. Everything vegan is clearly marked. Doesn't that make it easy? Well, don't think too hard, because I'll tell you. It makes it very easy. Also, don't worry about taking your gross meat-eating friends and family here. My meat-eating friends told me about this place. Yes, it's so delicious you might die and it's good for the gross meat-eaters in your life, too. YOU DON'T HAVE TO GO ALONE. YOU DON'T HAVE TO WORRY THAT YOUR IDIOT FRIENDS ARE GOING TO LIKE IT. I think this is the absolute best Indian food I've ever had. And guess what! Wednesday buffet is vegan! Like I'll never be able to make it for that because of working and stuff, but if you're in this area, then you should go. Like OMFG I'm not even joking around. I'm still on vacation tomorrow and my husband and I are going back. I'm even blowing my damned diet. Like I'm losing a lot of weight, so whatever. Yeah you read it right it's a vegetarian restaurant. A must go place for south Indian vegeee folks. They have a wide variety of options. The buffet is so worth it. They have quite interesting items like veg puff, mysore pak and chat. Food is of moderate spice and tastes yummy. read more

"Every time we eat here I'm in vegetarian heaven!" crowed my "mostly vegetarian" friend as we merrily stuffed our faces at Amma's Kitchen recently. Without a doubt, part of the celestial world which many religious traditions assure us awaits us after we die will be an Amma's mid-day buffet that never closes. IT'S THAT GOOD. And good for you too! I'd never wanted seconds of cauliflower in my life 'til I tried Amma's versions of the drab white cruciform vegetable. Last week's lunch offering was the best yet - "Gobi Manchurian" it was called. The thin coating of "hot" yet sweet-n-sour batter meshed sublimely with the cauliflower's taste and texture. We went apesh-t over it, trying to remember to leave room for all the other yummy selections - of which there are plenty. Even the lowly garbanzo and the boring green bean get star treatment and demand multiple helpings. Creamed spinach that you can't get enough of? Riiiiiiight...Yes! It's not salty either! And, y'know what they say: "Save some room for dessert." Usually dessert is either a rice pudding or something coconutty - not jump n' shout delicious necessarily, but a pleasant and sweet contrast to the spicy entrees. Out of all the times I've gone gluttonous at Amma's, it's never occurred to me to learn whether they have a liquor license. With the heaps of healthy goodness from the chow line, H2O works perfectly. True - when the joint's jumpin', as it is in a major way on weekends, you might have to wait out a waitress. But sometimes having to let food settle for a minute or two is for the best. Having trouble convincing carnivores to try this place? Don't mention that no meat is served, and they'll probably not know the difference. The last time I was there, one of the vehicles in the nearly full parking lot was a black pickup-truck-on-steroids that was plastered with Harley-Davidson and deer hunting stickers. This is my favorite Indian restaurant in Cincinnati. The food is so delicious. The Amma's thali was the best. Everything mentioned on the website is 100% true. Do not miss pepper rasam and tea. The people were super kind and friendly. I am planning to visit it soon again read more
