Not sure which gentleman came out as I was not home, but the service was quick and professional. There had been a series of break-in's in the hood where the lock was popped open. From all reports, Amazon packages were the items of interest. Our location was fine, but figured why tempt fate. Gave these guys a call, explained what I was looking for (based on recommendations from another building that had work done) and made arrangements for them to come out and install the item. I was asking about some overkill stuff and the gentleman I spoke to on the phone talked me out of as he said I didn't need it. He just recommended what I needed to get the job done...nice! They were upfront about the fact that the part was not in-house and would have to be ordered. They did so and called immediately to schedule a time to come out. For what we got, the price was fair and the work was very professional looking. They gave us a window of 9 am to 1 pm, so The Doctor worked from home that day. As they had my number for contact information, they called around 12:50 pm or so to say they were running a little late. That was nice as I was able to let The Doctor know. I am not docking them a star for that. If we had been able, they could have come out the next morning after letting me know the part was in, but no one would have been home. So the next best day was the Monday after the weekend. I felt like they squeezed us in, which was fine by me as I wanted the work done right away. Called Amazing Lock Service on a Monday afternoon after our front door suddenly wouldn't open. It was unlocked and the knob turned but the latch wouldn't unlatch. Bill showed up about 45 minutes later and had the door opened in about 5 seconds flat. He told me that a spring had broken and we needed a new lockset, but it would be difficult to find something that fit our old door because of its unusual dimensions. After ensuring that it was ok to leave us with just the deadbolt for a little while, he removed the broken lockset and said he would look for something that would work and would come back in the next day or so to install a new one. Sure enough, he called me this afternoon (Tuesday) and showed up at 4:00 to install the new lockset which fit perfectly. All told, Amazing Lock Service lived up to their name. They were able to open our broken door and install a much better lockset in under 24 hours and at a very reasonable price. Would highly recommend! read more

These guys crush it. Called them over the holidays (yeah, this review is overdue) because the key I'd stashed to our apartment had been taken, and no one could get in to feed our cat. This service was recommended to me by our real estate company, as they knew our landlord and would be able to change the locks to the apartment while ensuring our landlord's master key would still work. (Hooray.) Long story short, I got on the phone with them, and a few hours later the work was done. Would've been great if they could've fed the cat as well, but hey, what can you do. Also, two little things: first, the key they made for our apartment is gold instead of silver, which is amazing because now I can tell the difference between which key opens our front door and which one opens the door to our actual apartment. (Yes, I know I could've just gotten a rubber thing to put on either key, but it's awesome that Amazing Locks just inadvertently solved this problem for me.) Second, the lock works 100x better than the old one did. I'm not sure how prices among locksmiths compare, but I was happy to pay what I did for a great service that gave me peace of mind. I have a lot of people come into my home to do things that I should probably do myself (cleaning, dog walking, laundry service), but that I have budgeted to outsource because frankly, I just don't like doing them and I sacrifice in other ways (groceries) to make these luxuries possible. However, it does make me feel a shade lazy and somewhat domestically incompetent...I can't help that. The nice part about locksmiths? They HAVE to make a housecall. I can't very well move my storage unit that has been locked up for 6 months without a key (disappeared) to the shop and have them cut it off, now can I? No! They must come to me. And, I do not need to feel badly about this. A-ha! Left a message with Amazing Lock, received a call back the next day, had a dude out here within a few days. Two hour time frame, he arrived promptly within it. So, yes...the gist is I lost an entire set of keys. They were swallowed up by the city of Chicago somewhere, and they are long gone. All of my important keys were replaced EXCEPT my storage padlock, because it only had one, no copies were ever made, and no one owns one. So, I needed to have it sawed off, or whatever that is. Because, really...my winter coats are still hanging on their coat rack, and it's getting ridiculous...its almost time to bring them back out. They need to go in storage. Plus, who knows what other things I've hidden from myself down there! It's like Christmas. Ok, not really. At all. And, while I am at it...let's get all these locks changed. Who even know s how many persons have been granted keys to this place. Former dog walkers, former tenants from Craigslist, ex-boyfriends, friends..you get it, a lot of people. So, 4 of 'em...deadbolts and doorknobs, let's swap 'em out. Total for padlock bustin' + 4 locks on 2 doors: $145. Took under an hour and the guy was professional and on-time. Would definitely call again, and they are located right in the Lakeview 'hod...so I'd surely stop in to have a few sets of new keys made, or whatever I might need. Safe and secure! Deadbolted in! No more night terrors of creepers in my house. Ahh, Yelp to the rescue! Write a not so glowing review, get a call back within a few hours. I love how that works. Apparently a call went longer than expected (4 days longer?) and associates at Amazing Lock Service didn't come back into the office all week to get my message about waiting for an estimate. I get it, sometimes we all get busy and miss deadlines here and there. If you're late every once in a while I totally understand, we all have those days. But, when you're late every chance you get, I really have no choice but to take my business elsewhere. Oh, the estimate for the keypad lock was $1600, which I found for about half the price somewhere else. So, I guess I was right, locksmiths are a super expensive last ditch hassle. I called the number provided by Google and had this conversation: Guy - Amazing Lock Service Me - Hi, do you sell lock boxes? Guy - Yes, we do but not on Sundays, man. Me - Oh. Why do you answer the phone then? Guy - Because it's an emergency service you fucking idiot. *Hangs up* Wow. That is word-for-word the conversation that I had with this guy. It gets better. I went back to Google to make sure I didn't accidentaly call their emergency number. Nope. It is the listed number for this company. I called back: Guy - Amazing Lock Service Me - Hi, who am I speaking with? (I recognized the voice; same guy) Guy - Mark Me - Are you the guy that just called me a "fucking idiot"? Mark - I didn't call you nothin' Me - Just so you know, when you Google locksmith and my zip code this is the phone number that comes up. I didn't know it was an emergency number so why the fuck would you call me a fucking idiot? At this point we started swearing at each other, I don't remember what exactly was said but we both said "fuck" a lot. Me - Can I speak with your boss or a supervisor? Mark - I AM the boss Me - Oh, that's disappointing. I'll call back on Monday, maybe I can talk to someone that is your superior. We then proceeded to swear at each other some more and I hung up on him. It gets even better. This guy Mark called me back! Me - Hello? Mark - Anything else you want to say to me today? Me - Um, no. I think I got my point across. Mark - You were swearing at me and calling me names before I thought maybe you wanted to say some more? Me - No thanks, I look forward to talking to your boss tomorrow. That was the extent of my conversation with Mark at Amazing Lock Service. Needless to say I am upset I had to give them one star and I obviously won't be using their services or buying my lockbox (which I found at Home Depot the same day. $39.99 for a good one!). Also, I think the company that I work for uses Amazing Lock Service when we get locks changed. No more. I still plan on calling on Monday to make sure this guy Mark isn't really the boss (what store owner talks to a potential customer that way?) and to make sure the owner or manager knows how his employees talk to customers. read more

The locksmith who was dispatched was very young and made rude comments and behaved poorly. We were charged rate higher than quoted and they didn't honor the offer from website ($10 off). True hack who preys on people when they're most in need. Also called after midnight with a billing question - complete disregard for service and professionalism. I had a pretty good experience here. I needed my set of 5 house keys copied. Unfortunately they didn't have a long one that is apparently hard to duplicate (I verified this at Home Depot). But the rest of the keys he finished in like 3 minutes, much to my surprise. I knew it'd be quick, but not that quick. However this may have come at a cost because the copy of my front door key didn't work. So now I'm going to have to bring it back and get another one made, but I'm sure they'll do it at no cost. The service was very good, they guy was cool. Minus one star for one of the keys not working. Minus another because I'll have to make another trip back. If you need keys made, go here if its close to you, because I've heard Home Depot messes up keys all the time and you should support local businesses! read more

Yelp. Good for business... not for customers. It's good to weed are really bad ones but... good reviews do not always translate to good product. I hired them to replace our lock a while back (stellar reviews on yelp). They price gouge customers just because they're busy. In fact, they charged me $80 just for coming out. Then another $200 or so for simple lock installation. Isn't $80 commute fee usually waived if you do decide to use their service? In any case, I would have complained about the fees but they did a terrible job. The door had been broken into once so the lock is still loose. The screws that hold the lock in place no longer secures anything. Took me a while to notice but they should have used a bigger screw or something. I won't be calling them back any time soon. read more

Expertise and customer service are not their forte. Earlier this year, the key to my front door lock (Medeco) stopped turning. I called Amazing Lock and they sent someone to fix the door. The extent of the "repair" was to hammer and pound on the lock, wrench the key back and forth, and even slam the key with a heavy mallet while it was in the keyhole. Not surprisingly, it didn't work. Not having any WD40 themselves, they asked to borrow mine, which they proceeded to spray full blast for 5-second intervals into the keyhole spraying the greasy fluid everywhere, including on the painted walls near the door. As I later learned, WD40 stains very badly on colored paint, and after trying to clean it, I was forced to repaint it. With the WD40 and the hammering, the key began turning and after a sum total of 30 minutes on site, they charged $100. If I knew it just required slamming the lock after lubing it, I think I could have done that myself. One month later, the key doesn't turn. I call them again and this time, they hard sell me on a Mul-T-Lock. Fine. I purchased it and they installed it. No problems with the Mul-T-Lock, but I wonder if they could have recommended that in the first place or mentioned that the lock hammering was only temporary. Tough to say. One month later, I need to duplicate the keys. I call them and ask if they duplicate Mul-T-Lock keys (specifically as it relates to my key type, which is printed on a credit card sized identification you receive with the lock). They say "no, we don't carry the G-XXX key blanks in the store." I said, "well, where do you suppose I get keys duplicated then because I purchased this Mul-T-Lock from your store." Immediately, the guy says, "oh, well, in that case, come on in. I'll make duplicates for you." What? I still cannot comprehend why they would say "no" and then change their answer to "yes" after learning I purchased the lock from them. A few days later, my wife goes in for duplicates and asks if she can get different colored keys (the heads are coated in plastic). They don't do that because the key blank we need only comes in blue. No problem. The keys are made and she walks out of the door. After leaving the store, she notices that there is a recessed portion on the key heads that allow you to click in plastic inserts. Ours had nothing in them. So, she goes in to ask if they have the inserts and, if so, whether they come in different colors. Yes, of course they do. Don't you think, if you had any common or business sense, you would recommend those inserts to a customer asking for different colored key heads in the first instance? So, she asks for the colored inserts only to be met with terse and rude employees with absolutely no etiquette. Try to find another place. I give it two stars because customer service only comes second to actual expertise. Their expertise in fixing my old lock was terrible, but the new lock has been working fine, thus the two stars. read more

After two Home Depots (including the one on Halsted just down the street from here) failed to make good copies of our house keys, we were recommended by a local to go to A Amazing Lock Service. After copying the keys (which would turn out to work great), the owner let us know that he couldn't accept a credit card for the $3 sale, so he sent us on our way free-of-charge. We ultimately returned with the $3 a week or two later, but I felt that he had such good business practice that it deserved a yelp. :) Next time you need a key copied, go here instead of Home Depot. This review is based only on an estimate. But the estimate includes a level of service that I felt was inadequate. I called to inquire about an estimate and the person I spoke was very friendly and polite. We scheduled an in-home estimate for the next day. Two hours and 45 minutes into the 3 hour window they gave me, I called to inquire where they were. The person I spoke to on the phone (different than the first guy) tells me that "I don't know what's going on here". I was promised a call back. I didn't get one. Thanks for giving me the confidence that you actually know what you're doing. The guy doing the estimate showed up 15 minutes outside of the window they originally gave me. Not necessarily a deal breaker, but it's all about expectations. If it's a company that provides a service, I expect service. They quoted a crazy inflated price (in my opinion). Even if I felt the quote was justified, the way they handled the process gave me that "run away, fast" feeling. YMMV...for all I know these guys might actually do work that is worthy of their prices. I'm not going to find out. First impressions matter. read more
