I can't speak for the way this company operates in a non-emergency, but in an EMERGENCY situation FORGET IT. Such an absolute joke. I could not have made it more clear that we had an emergency and needed someone asap. Our building had a gas leak and one of the units was out of town, no one had a key. I respect that businesses have protocols, but they won't even schedule a tech to come out without authorization from the unit and proof of residency. Called EIGHT other locksmiths and no one had that requirement, at least not in an emergency. After all of the back and forth, could not guarantee me that someone could be at the building within 45 minutes. Could have saved me so much time and energy if we started there, even though I had asked multiple times and expressed complete urgency. read more

Just like everyone, I read the reviews expecting to be wowed. Situation: Very small storage lock with a key. Pros: He was quick. Same day appointment. (The extra star). Cons: He was obviously rushing from the second he got out the car with an attitude. He went from picking the lock to drilling in a matter of seconds. He also didn't inform me that it was an additional $90 for the drill. I'm so big on being upfront with the customer. It was extremely annoying because my grandfather (who usually helps but was out of town) told me it shouldn't be more than $30-$50 because it was simple. I didn't realize it was an extra until he told me the final price. What if I didn't have it? I could see if it was an extra $10 and you didn't mention it, but $90?! Also, the yelp code didn't work. I've used Steve with Chicago Locksmiths twice now and it's been a terrific experience! The first time he came over was to rekey my new condo. The sellers had installed a sliding glass door to the patio that had a separate key than the main entry, and I thought we would be stuck with two keys for our exterior doors. Not so! Steve had it all rekeyed to work with the same key! I didn't even think that was going to be possible! The second time was to replace the knob on my front door- the one we had that came with the apartment started to fall off. Steve got us securely put back together again in no time! The five-star reviews here read like they were written for a different business. My experience with these guys was lackluster, to say the least. My bicycle lock broke in the Loop, I needed my lock to be destroyed ASAP in order to get my bike home. Keep in mind: this is--at most--a 10 minute job, usually done with a kind of saw, but it does require specialized equipment. When I first called, I was told that a smith would be there within 45 minutes and that he would call me when he was on his way. After waiting for the entire 45 minutes in an office building lobby, I called back and was told that they had no idea where the smith was and would call me back in "two minutes." Ten minutes later, I got a call from the locksmith himself, who informed me it would be another 45 minutes before he arrived. Since it was early evening at this point, I asked him to cancel the trip and that I'd be using another service in the future. read more

First time using a locksmith so not sure what is standard. Essentially when you call them they will tell you $20 for the locksmith to come out and then $35/hr. However, I was getting a bit suspicious when the guy kept fidgeting away from how much a job would cost. WORD OF WARNING: THEY MAY NOT CHARGE YOU BY THE HOUR BUT BY THE TYPE OF JOB THEY ARE DOING! The key to my bike lock broke off in my Kryptonite U-lock. I spoke to the guy on the phone and told him I would need someone with an angle grinder to come cut the lock. He still told me $20 to show up and $35/hr. However, when the guy shows up for the job he tells me its $150 to cut a lock regardless. Although they also claim to accept credit cards, the guy basically was basically telling me I would avoid a service charge if I paid cash. Honestly I felt like I was dealing with a shady company and that I was getting ripped off. Just be upfront with me. If its going to cost $150, then its going to cost $150 and I can make that decision without feeling I was given a bait-and-switch. The service itself was fine, the guy showed up and did his thing.
