Terrible experience. I came in to have spare keys made for our lockers, but the keys they made didn't work. I went back and they agreed to remake them, but the replacements still didn't work--and on top of that, they lost the original key to one of the lockers and denied losing it. As a customer, you expect nothing but the best service, whether it's from a car wash, cleaning company, grocery store, or locksmith. A job should be completed as promised, with clear communication throughout the process. It's unacceptable to leave customers in the dark, with no calls or emails about the status of a job. Customers shouldn't have to chase down a locksmith for updates. A lack of knowledge or professionalism is no excuse for leaving a job unfinished or treating customers poorly. Unfortunately, it seems that professionalism is lacking at Ashland's Locksmith. The staff is often unable to provide answers, leaving customers frustrated. The dismissive attitude and inability to communicate effectively with clients are unacceptable. If you can't treat customers respectfully and professionally, this isn't the right industry for you--plain and simple. Can't recommend this company enough! We were able to schedule re keying for our new place with very short notice. Everything went smoothly (especially in the midst of a stressful move). Joshua arrived on time and was incredibly helpful and took the time to explain how to operate and reset the keypad (which we had no experience with before) and walked me through the rekeying process. He was also able to rekey several locks on the property that had NO keys, which made the process more challenging. But Joshua was very efficient and friendly and definitely went above and beyond! read more

The Mikes save the day! When my client's sometimes-sticky patio door handle malfunctioned, locking his dog outside, he had to remove it to get pup back inside. That left him with a semi-functioning door for months, because he didn't know who to call to repair it. When he heard that another unit in the building had the same issue, he was directed to Ashland. Mike K arranged for his guy to meet me right after the neighbor got his door fixed. When he arrived, Mike E explained that he had been back & forth with the neighboring unit, figuring out these patio doors, ordering ultimately unnecessary parts & discovering what the real issue was. Apparently all the doors in the building are the same age, & with similar wear & tear, these same issues are popping up. They've even gotten calls from people, locked out onto their own balconies! And have had to get the doorman to let them in the unit! Mike E showed me exactly what the problem was, and fixed it quickly. He was also super detailed, cleaning up drips after his sprays of magic fixing stuff. All within the window of appointment time originally promised. Perfect. If you have problems with a door handle like the one in this picture, give them a call asap. Even if it's just starting to get a little sticky - bc that's where it starts! Getting locked out of your house is a pretty stressful situation, but getting locked out of your garage is a Andrew Jarecki-interviewing-Robert-Durst stressful situation. Thankfully this kid named David came to my rescue and was able to not only pick the emergency lock on my garage door in minutes, but he also made me a key copy so I don't have to worry about it again moving forward. He was there in a flash and this wiz kid far surpassed what I was expecting him to do. The staff at Ashland Lock is incredibly friendly, professional, and understanding. This is my first ever negative review on Yelp. Given my interactions with this business though, it is warranted. I used this place about 3 years ago to replace my locks. They were capable and did a good job. More recently however, I contacted them for a bigger job; replacing two doors in my condo that opened up to public hallways. I decided to go into the store to discuss what my options would be. I know the basics about doors and locks, and by no means am an expert. I got the impression that the employee I spoke with was, but just was not interested in giving me concrete answers. When asked about the different strengths of dead bolts, doors, strike plates, I received vague and ambiguous answers. Nevertheless, I decided to pursue an estimate. A gentleman came out to measure my doors, check the frame, etc. I proceeded to SPECIFICALLY tell him what type of dead bolt I would like and that I wanted to keep my old door knob. When the estimate came back almost one week later however, none of this was on there. They included prices for things I never asked for, and did not include prices for things I did ask for. I am a calm guy though, so I just figured it was a communication break down. I emailed the person who sent me the estimate, only to receive no response. I decided to further waste my time by showing up at the store on one of my days off. My interaction with the older gentleman in the store was one of the top 3 uncomfortable, comedic, and ironic exchanges I have ever had. I told him about my estimate, how I was unhappy with certain aspects of it, and he proceeded to say what a "bummer" this was. When I asked pointed questions like, "what are my other options for deadbolts, strike plates, doors, etc." it was as if he was as high as Jerry Garcia at Woodstock. What kills me is I was looking to spend at least $2k on new doors, and as much as $4k. Yet they acted as if I were asking them for a favor. Unbelievable. If you want your locks changed, they can probably handle that. Any bigger job, do what I did and call the people at Anderson Locks. Prompt, they listen, have better prices, and are aware that professionalism is an important trait when you are trying to sell a service or product. read more

He has the attitude of a child and somehow he gets away with it! Its clear that the owner knows how much of a jerk this guy is yet he still continues treating his customers like they are unimportant. After attempts at getting duplicate keys at both Home Depot and Menards with no luck, Ashland Lock saved me! It was an older key from my father's house and we desperately needed to get other copies made. It was nice to go into this small shop and helped out right away. I was also reassured that if I had any problems with the key they would refund me. There is something to be said for the smaller places that are experts in a specific discipline. I will return. Because the key is KEYS... What am I doing reviewing a lock company when 99% of all the places I have are restaurants? Because these guys will make your life easier in ONE VISIT, if you need house keys. LOCATION: One block north of Ashland and Fullerton. VERY HARD to park and a lot of fast and truck traffic. Be careful! KEYS: Back to keys. I needed multiple copies of a key for a tough lock. I took the working copy I had and made several at Home Depot, Menards, and Ace Hardware - each time some or ALL the 4 copies of the same key did not work on the lock. This cost me 6 trips to the store. I asked a contractor friend where to get keys made and he said this place. One trip to Ashland Lock, 4 keys made, ALL FOUR WORKED THE FIRST TIME. Believe me, this place is worth its weight in gas money, especially if you want to lock it up. read more

I am happy to write a review for Ashland Lock & Security for a job well done. I called because the intercom and buzzer for our building was broken, which means no UPS deliveries! Frustrating! I expected it to be a difficult and/or an expensive fix, but Seth made it easy. We set up an appt for 3:45 and he showed up right on time and had everything fixed within minutes. He then gave me some tips about how we could fix a door in our unit so we didn't have to pay anyone to do it. Very cool! Seth was polite, friendly, honest and fast. Mike from Ashland Lock installed two smart locks for me last October -- I'm in an old building with old doors that have all sorts of problems, and Mike installed my locks quickly and professionally. He also fixed a small handful of problems with worn-out spindles and other janky-old-door things. He also keyed the smart locks so that one key worked on everything. I got myself locked *inside* the house yesterday morning (just the front door), and I called Ashland Lock again. Ashland Lock was the only one that picked up promptly and answered all my quotes-related questions thoroughly so that I had a good idea of what my services were going to be and how much they were going to cost. After a couple of days, I called to schedule an appointment and wanted the services to be rendered as soon as possible. To my surprise, they were able to do it that very afternoon! The service professional, Joe, was very courteous and thorough. There was a minor glitch because someone had taken one of his tools and he requested to come back the next day for the installation of deadbolt. I was flexible, so I was able to reschedule for the next day. On the next day, I called and asked if he could come in earlier than what we scheduled. Definitely earned my repeat business and referrals. I don't get keys made often but I lost my motorcycle key, and had the code for it from the manufacturer. Called around and no one was as help as the gentleman that answered the phone here. Patient and researched to make sure he could help me before I came in. Was very straight about results. Brought in the code. Had the key made in just a couple minutes when other places said it would take 5-10 days to make a coded key. Took it home and my bike started right up. My Original review on 1/3/12 is below. I know it's ugly and unpopular to call the race card, but it's an ugly behaviour of some businesses in Chicago, and I'm calling it when I see it. This is representative of the typical treatment we get on the South Side by vendors who can't be bothered with treating South Side customers properly or with any sense of professionalism. To be fair, Ashalnd Lock and Security is certainly not the only business to treat South Side customers poorly - I had to go through three locksmith companies to find one that had the courtesy to come out when they said they would, without hemming and hawing about whether or not they could service the South Side (even when prominently listed in the neighborhood Yellow Pages), and to provide the simple courtesy of arranging a time to come out, and coming out when they said they would. In this case with Ashland Locks I very clearly made an appointment for a tech to show up at 9:30 a.m. at my home - the tech Steve I spoke to didn't apologize, offer an alternative arrangement, get his boss on the phone or anything - he was supposedly 'just told to make a call about some parts' and that was that. I did not have this level of problem with businesses on the North Side in either Lincoln Park or Lakeview, and given how consistently widespread the problem is here on the South Side and some of the things businesses say when you give an address on the South Side - no matter how prominent it is - like - 'we can't send our tech to the South Side today we need to keep them on the North Side' I can only assume that bias and ignorance are major factors in their hesitance to d professsional business with people on the South Side. At any rate - if you're sincere in saying that your techs and staffers aren't biased against the South Side, make sure that they're not so blatantly unprofessional Ashland Locks. In this case based on my discussions with two of your staff, it sounded like they didn't want to send someone out or come out to my South Side address. You should correct that behavior so that if someone from the South Side calls again they aren't met with such unprofessionalism. ORIGINAL POSTING: Ashland Locksmiths called me at 9:32 a.m. this morning - we had a 9:30 appointment. Then they get the tech named Steve on the phone and he tells me that he 'got a message to give me some prices'. The arrangements we made on Friday were to have a tech come out at 9:30 a.m. this morning. Once again my valuable time is wasted for absolutely nothing on a locksmith. What IS it with these stupid lock companies. If you live on the South Side, locksmithis will not with you and either don't show up or give you BS when you think you've made arrangements for service, or both as in this case. I definitely will not do business with Ashland locks. This is the kind of crap we have to put up with on the South Side I believe because businesses don't take business seriously on the South Side because it's predominantly populated by minorities. Yes I'm going to say it - this is more evidence of the racism prevalent in Chicago. I doubt seriously that it will ever change because businesses think they can treat people badly based on their color, where they live, their accent, etc. and those kind of people thrive in this racist City. Absolutely horrible customer service. I scheduled my appointment 5 days in advance. They asked me to send over loads of pictures of all my locks in advance, which I was happy to do. Then about 2 hours before the appointment they canceled on me for another customer. They claimed they didn't realize how big the job was, but I was very clear that it would take multiple hours and even sent them a pictures of everything in advance. I called to complain to the manager, and he was smug and unapologetic. I would recommend using a lock smith that actually takes pride in their customer service read more

I guess it depends on what you're looking for. I agree that the locksmith showed up on time and resolved the issue quickly. I have issue with the fact that they charged me $85 travel fee (where most companies charge $40-50), making my 20 minute appointment total well over $200 (!!). I also bear issue with the fact that they waited almost 3 weeks to charge my credit card and still haven't provided me with a receipt for this transaction. Shady. read more

Our condo association was introduced to Ashland lock during the turnover from Ranquist Development in 2005 and since then both the Association and individual unit owners have been using Ashland. Their salespeople and lock professionals are the best. But the inventory manager, Dave, makes it so unpleasant to work with them on larger jobs that we'll be finding another locksmith.
