Came, assessed the issue and instead of selling me a new lock which I thought we would need, he was able to rekey the lock at a more modest charge. The fob of my Honda CRV key had broken so I called them to get/program a new one. I offer to have them use the old blade, but the technician says that it's the same price to program a new electronic piece with or without a new blade. Fine... So I asked him to make a new blade. It doesn't go in as easily as the old blade but whatever. Fast forward 3 months later. I notice that my key sometimes takes a bit to lock or unlock the car. One night it doesn't work at all and it takes 45 minutes of trying to get into my car. Also, at this point I notice that the poorly-copied blade doesn't open the physical lock on the door! When I call Chicago Locksmiths about this, the technician says it's Honda's fault with the door and that the car key battery is probably dying. He was surprised when I told him that the old blade worked with the car door. So the following must be true 1) They made me a fob that only had 3 months of battery life or something is wrong with the transponder in the fob they programmed. 2) New blade was not properly cut. Update: They offered me a partial refund, cut the key into better shape, and reprogrammed a new fob. All done very quickly and conveniently. Came to my house to do it. read more

This was the first location of Chicago Locksmiths that I stopped at. It's certainly convenient--it's about a block away from my house. That's why I stopped here; I needed to get a new doorknob, and we'd also heard they had safes so thought maybe we'd get a small one for passports, social security cards, and other important documents. When we told him what we were looking for, he said we might want to visit the other location on Milwaukee because it was "more of a showroom". I... don't know what that is about. I'm not sure what they do here besides make keys, I guess? Seems like a pretty large storefront for just that, but then I'm not sure I understand why you'd turn away people who want to purchase merchandise and services if you sell the product. So... maybe call first? Or just go with someone else? At any rate, your mileage may vary. For my part, based upon my experience here with someone who apparently couldn't do anything and the shop they sent us to, I'd drive to Roseland for competent locksmith before I'd visit Chicago Locksmiths again. read more

Rolled up right after they closed and had to come back the next day. I just needed some keys made for my sons new apartment. The gentleman behind the counter took care of my simple request quickly and didn't charge me too much. I was able to even get a special key as a joke for him. I was in and out in less than 10 minutes. Parking here was a little rough but there was something just over a block away. I was visiting family and locked myself out of the building, and EVERYONE else in the building was at least one hour away. I had nothing on me but my phone and dog, no proof that my family lived here or even my identity. The dispatcher helped me figure out how to get confirmation and permission quickly from my family who was out of the house, and someone was there in an hour (it could have been longer but it was an urgent situation so someone came faster.) Louis was an absolute rockstar - the locks gave him a lot of trouble but he really went above and beyond to make sure he was able to unlock a door. I was panicked the whole time but he was very kind and understanding so I didn't feel badly about what happened. It's an unfortunate situation but if it ever happened again, I would 100% call Chicago Locksmiths again and ask for Louis. read more

Note this is 3rd review ever written. So it takes an amazing service to get me to write one. That's how good Robert the tech was, and how legit this firm is My situation: own a 2012 Camry, but lost one of two original keys a year back and was too cheap to drive somewhere and get a spare. I had one key, that's all I needed. Then I lost that key. So my car is in my buildings garage, off, but unlocked so I can sit in it, but I have no keys. I call Northside Toyota. They tell me car has to be towed from my home to Toyota (Western and Foster) which is technically impossible due to where my car is parked in garage, and they quoted me $500 for labor and the FOB itself they quoted me as slightly under $450. That's about $1000. Not including this impossible tow job to get the car to their facility So I'm losing my hair by the minute at this point, nervous breakdown status. Then my mom says "you know, locksmiths do work on modern cars with smart key fobs". I didn't believe her. I start googling. I come across Chicago Locksmiths on Lawrence. I call, tell dispatcher all my details and she says a technician will call me in ten mins. Robert, the technician, calls me in about 2 minutes and we talk and I confirm all the info. Robert says he'll be an hour and I need my title and ID so he can be authorized to do the work. Makes sense. I ask to confirm if the FOB will be OEM Toyota like my original one or some generic third party key. He confirms OEM. He shows up in exactly an hour in essentially a minivan that's retrofitted to have a full service locksmith shop in the back, one that can even churn out Smart FOBs for a 2012 Camry. Guy had a laptop and all kinds of gear, even a headlamp for the low light situation. Fully prepared. 30 mins and $320 cash later and I have a brand new Toyota key that's OEM as promised and works exactly as the old, down to the key that pops out the fob to unlock and lock the door (it's a push start ignition). Literally a perfect execution by my man Robert in 30 mins. I went from a midlife crisis and a situation that was technically impossible but even if I could tow it, Northside Toyota wanted a Gstack...to handing Robert my money and him handing me a perfect working Toyota key 90 minutes later. For $300. Robert the technician is the man. I swear it was like angelic stuff today. This business is phenomenal and legit. Don't throw away your money to a dealership that's going to gauge you. I want to warn potential customers that the quotes they get over the phone are apparently meaningless. I needed a mailbox lock replaced, described the situation, got a quote, and made the appointment. When the locksmith showed up, he said it would cost $80-100 more than what I was quoted. I told him what I was quoted over the phone and he said they just tell people whatever when booking the appointments. He agreed to only charge $20 over the quoted price and I begrudgingly said "ok fine." I don't know if I blame the locksmith for this- he seemed nice but overwhelmed, and he did the work well and efficiently. Lost my only key while on vacation in Denver. My cat was parked in a garage at Ohare. He offered to go to the garage work in the car and call me when the Keynes working. This guy is good. I have Lexus hybrid. Dealer told me it would be 250 for the key 180 for programming... To tow it without key I'd need wheel Dolly's at 65 plus 250 for the tow and $3 per mile. I rolled with it he got the car working gave me a key spare key and leather carrying case. Lexus IS complicated because of the computer... I'd totally recommend him to a friend. Saved me over 350 just on the tow. At least a hundred on labor at the dealer. read more

I went in here to get a couple keys made. I was expecting a perfunctory exchange, but was pleasantly surprised to find myself in a friendly chat about melon candies and the Asian grocery on Broadway. I also asked the guy about the lock on my front door, which was becoming increasingly difficult to open. I feared I would be locked out--keys in hand. He suggested I oil it rather than have someone come out to repair. I was pretty sure that wasn't the problem. I needed parts, expertise, or at least recalibration. He told me how to get the lock off the door with a screwdriver and what parts he needed to see to assess the problem. Great. Turns out he made one key twice and I was missing another. No big deal, as I had to disassemble my front door and bring that apparatus in anyway. Two days later I get around to that task. I was parked in my car outside finishing up a call when I heard a knock on my window. It was the key guy, who had my reading glasses in his hand. I had left them there and he was unable to contact me because I'd paid in cash, but he remembered my car (which has a promotional wrap on it), and was happy to see me to return my glasses. So nice! He made me the key and didn't charge me because I had to come back, even though I would have anyway. Then he checked the lock I brought in and oiled it, and it worked fine. I felt foolish, but was relieved with the simple fix. Again, no charge. We all have a lot of errands to run. Excellent customer service and friendly exchanges make them seem more like socializing than chores. This is my new locksmith place. You'd be wise to make it yours, too. read more
