Wow!! What a great place. Absolutely exceeded my expectations in every way. Specifics - from the very start of the booking process Barbara was outstanding. She listened to what I needed, provided suggestions, and agreed to keep in touch with me as my move date approached. Mario also provided great info when it came to the booking process and stayed on the line with me the whole time through confirmation. The Alton team really too the stress out of the storage part of my long distance moving experience. Location - stellar for us. Really close to the airport, super safe neighborhood, wide streets which is great when driving a big uHaul or truck. Facilities - outstanding. Amazingly clean. Like not a spec of dirt on the floor. Totally blown away by this. Great lobby stocked with supplies, wide isles, the doors are easy to lift and operate. They provide carts for customers and the staff goes out of their way to make your loading and unloading experience pleasant. The AC keeps the units cool and they are really well lit. There is ample loading dock space for a few people to be using it at the same time and lots of parking if you need to stay a while. Overall a 5 star, no 10 star, experience. The facility is super clean, and there are a lot of security cameras. The covered pull-up areas for loading were great since I moved my stuff on a rainy day. No Thank You. The facility and staff are very nice but their rent increase is absorbent. After 6 months they raised my rent by 40% from $109 to $152 a month. I called the office and they said the increase was due to an introductory rate and that the actual cost of the unit goes up to $199 later on in the year. With such a high increase I'm better just moving to another storage facility like Public Storage even if they raise my rate after 6 months (I'm still saving money). I previously used Public Storage in LA and they never raised my rent by 40%. I know that it's typical for storage facilities to raise prices after 6 months but this place is ridiculous. You just lost my business. read more

Been With Alton Storage for over a year now and finally decided to post on it. Good Service. Decent pricing for my small unit. Discount if you have rental insurance which is a plus. Clean facility. Secure Facility. Only negative would be the elevators make you enter your code prior to going up... which is fine but if I enter my code into the right side elevator but the left one opens, I now have to enter my code into the left one before I can go up. read more

I love this place!! It's clean, no riff raff, the hallways are extra wide and the staff is beyond friendly and helpful. I have had several units ranging from medium to large. I like how the gate is open during business hours and there's no need to get out of your car to press a code unless after hours. The facility is extreme safe and I've gone alone several times without any worry or concern like I've had at other storage places. Waited for 3 months now to see how everything would work. This place is very clean and safe. I had rented from other places and for some odd reason my things in a LOCKED storage where moved and some things damaged. All I can say is, I have the utmost respect for the staff. Very helpful employees specially one of the ladies but unfortunately I can't remember her name . She showed me several units and I eventually chose the one on the first floor and one of the bigger ones to accommodate my PODS. The facility is clean and has several security functions to limit unauthorized access to your storage. They also provide free water which is a big plus when you're moving because of course nobody thinks to bring water when they're moving. BEWARE OF 50 PERCENT RATE HIKES AFTER YOU MOVE IN THIS PLACE IS A SCAM I have two units at this facility. I was one of their earliest (aka guinea pig) customers. And after less than 6 months, they have INCREASED my storage fees by 50 PERCENT. This means that a 10 by 30 unit that was renting for $310 is now going to cost $450. And they only gave me 27 days notice. I have had things in storage for YEARS and NEVER ONCE had this kind of BS go down. F YOU ALTON SELF-STORAGE. read more

All I have to say is wow, this place is amazingly beautiful and secure. They have climate controlled units and an awesome dedicated crew. They offered an array of unit sizes and the crew was totally willing to work with me to get the right size I needed. We had to put all our furniture in storage for about 3 weeks since our move out/move in dates didn't coincide. Russ & his staff were friendly and helpful and our unit was perfect (close to the front). The facility is very new, modern & clean. The security is layered so you can't just stroll into the storage areas without proper access credentials and the hours of operation accommodate early morning or evening access. I see some other reviews have issues with rates being raised but I'd say it's the consumer's responsibility to get the facts first, then get it in writing to avoid a conflict. Even then, you may expect that rates will raise eventually. I give Alton Storage a 5-star rating and would pay more to store here because I had an exemplary experience! read more

Used my unit for 7 months and all my belongings were in perfect condition. This facility is has clean, air conditioned with high ceilings so humidity is not a concern, and security is tight. The staff are friendly and helpful and you can buy locks and boxes at reasonable prices at the office. read more

Let me begin by saying I was torn as to how to rate Alton by stars. I chose such a low rating not because of the facility itself but due to the selling tactics they use (outright lies) and how you are treated after you're a customer. I would give the location and facility 5 stars. It's bright, shiny, newer, is clean, has more carts than a lot of places, is safe and I feel good about our items being stored there. So on the subject of the property itself, well done. Now. The 1 star rating. Rate increases. Alton will lure you in with really great starter rates, as many places do. The problem is that the staff will tell you that your rate increases after around a year and that at most it increases by 10%. Well, read the other reviews here. Our rate, like many others, was increased by 50%. That's not a typo. That's a ridiculous rate hike. When speaking to the manager (Barbara) about it she was quite terse in her explanation that 'you are well below market so we have to get your rate closer to market'. When I brought the matter to her attention of being told rates increase by no more than 10% at around a year, she stumbled around and stated that we shouldn't have been told that, that the employee was wrong. Well, folks, you can see in other reviews that others have stated they were told the very same thing. It's not an employee mistake. It's a shady part of the sale. They all do it. *Edit: I failed to add that our increase came at 8 months. Not a year. I happened to go to our unit about a month ago and it was very busy, lots of people moving. I spoke to a couple as they were moving and thought I'd ask a few questions. How long have you been here, did you get a rate increase/when, were you told anything about how the rate increases would work when you rented the unit? They were quite candid explaining that their increase came after six months, it was a 50% increase (which was the reason for their moving out that day) and they said they were told that the increase would be no more than 10% at around a year. When I shared that we were told that as well they were not surprised as someone else had shared the same thing with them. See the pattern here? That's extremely shady. We had a large unit with a Public Storage for two years. We had two increases at appropriate times (roughly a year each) and they were only about 11% each. That's respectable. 50%?? No. We are currently researching other alternatives and will be happy to leave Alton Self Storage. So a recap: 5 stars for the property/units 1 star (because there isn't an option for '0') for the manager and her lack of people skills 1 star (yet again it should be a '0') for the lies regarding rate increases. You've been warned, rent at your own risk. It truly is a huge bait and switch. read more

If I could rate this place LESS than one star, I would. After paying $69 for my unit IN FULL for 6 months and then monthly for 1 month I fell behind and suddenly received a lien notice on Aug 22 for $188. I had been hospitalized which I explained to Barbara when I went in to pay my unit off. Suddenly my balance was $271 on Sept 3. They claim to have sent a rent raise letter (an increase of $58 a month!!). I never received such letter. I showed her the invoice THEY had provided me showing $188 owed good through 10/1. They claim it was a "computer glitch" and refuse to pay me the overage I paid and refuse to give me credit towards 10/1 monthly rent. I spoke with Evelyn at corporate which took me repeatedly calling to even get a call back. She told me "Oh well, you were notified its your problem". This is by far the worst customer service I have ever received. I have 4 friends with multiple units here and we are all taking our business ELSEWHERE. read more

Don't get too comfortable if you decided to rent a unit here. I was very pleased with the facility when I first moved my stuff in. They keep it clean and the level of security is about all you could hope for with a self-storage facility. Then after a few months, I got a notice that my rent was going to increase 25%! I understand periodic price hikes to offset the rising costs, inflation, etc. However, 25% is either a sign of greed or mismanagement, or both. Good luck with that bait and switch business model, Alton Self-Storage. I'll be moving out at the end of my term. read more
