My wife and I decided it would be fun to do a train date. We took the Metrolink to Upland. There is a quaint little Italian restaurant only two blocks up a quiet street. They have been in business for over twenty years, and it is easy to see why. The ambiance is cozy and feels very Italian, even with white linen table cloths. My wife had a tortellini and I had Giardino with a spinach fettuccini noodle. The pasta was fresh. The vegetables were seasoned and cooked perfectly. And it was prompt. If I were a Michelin reviewer I would mark off for presentation, but I'm most interested in taste and it was delicious. read more

Went to Allegro for the first time since the pandemic. What a terrible experience. First of all our, party of 4 was seated at an inside table near the front window. With the sun beating down we asked our server if they could lower the sun shade. She informed us the the shade was broken and would not be able to do so. We wanted to move to another table but none were available. We decided to put on sunglasses and perspire through our meal as it was very hot inside the restaurant. As for the food, my wife and I split the spinach salad which was very good. My wife had the chicken Marsala which she said was tasteless and bland. I had the fettuccine Alfredo with chicken and it was swimming in an uninspired sauce. The topper is they charge for BREAD - what a rip. I waited tables for many years, and one thing I learned that can wow a guest is how attentive you are to them AFTER they pay their bill. The Allegro staff kept our waters filled and checked back a couple times before we left. I appreciate that! Even from the time we sat down, our server was prompt and friendly. On Wednesdays they offer half off all wines by the glass... so that was a nice surprise! We spilt the bacon wrapped dates, which were delicious and came out very quick. Relative to the appetizer, the entrees took a little longer. Nothing obscene but we did get to the point, I think because of how quickly the dates came out, where we started to wonder when our food would arrive. That said, when it did, we were not disappointed. I had the farfelle dish with shrimp. It came out piping hot and with big chunks of asparagus. Yum! My husband had the filet which was not quite cooked to his liking. Still delicious! But not evenly cooked. They were happy to swap out the side that originally came with the meal, which we appreciated. Overall, a very nice experience. I wanted to try an Italian restaurant that was new to me, and Caffe Allegro looked to be a good fit. It was! Calamari Fritti was crisp and very good dipped in a fresh Marinara Sauce and Lemon Aioli specially requested and graciously supplied by the chef. A bowl of Tortellini al Brodo with orange, white, and green Tortellini was hot and excellent, and Insalata di Cesare made with raw eggs in the dressing was fairly good although undistinguished. As an appetizer a nice cheesy Margharita Pizza was served. Complimentary thick-sliced bread was moist and tasty, and ordered Bruschetta refreshing, peppered with cold squares of tomato and ample swaths of sage. Scaloppini di Vitello ai Funghi with creamy Porcini Mushroom Sauce, and accompanied by Carrot Mousseline, Steamed Broccoli, Bowtie Pasta, and a side of Roasted Potatoes, was fork tender and delectable. Unsweetened Tropical Iced Tea helped everything go down well. Diane enjoyed her Tortellini Alfredo, and two friends were pleased with their Eggplant Parmesan and Spaghetti Bolognese. Service was exemplary, portions generous, and the ambiance romantic and suitably Italian for the Northern alta cucina served here, along with fine pasta from the South. Food is pricey, but good. The beef steaks are not as they say, however. For example, the filet mignon was not soft and textured like comparable size filet mignons elsewhere. I think they "up-label" the meats to get a higher price but use lower quality cuts instead. Their pasta dishes are excellent and the quantities are reasonably sized. Salads are fresh and dressings are flavorful. The few times we've been there we had drinks, which are well made and not watered-down. Their beer menu is weak, but one doesn't expect the place to be a craft beer haven. You can get decent beer there, however. Just don't expect much of a selection. read more

The food here has always been really good. However, the service has really gone downhill. We had a party of 2 and when we arrived at the restaurant we were told that they were between staff and could not be seated even though most of the tables were open. We asked how long the wait would be and we were told it would be about 15 minutes. Well 30 minutes later when we asked what the problem was we were again told that it was change of shift and it would only be another 15 minutes! If they'd only told us from the beginning that it was going to be an hour late we would've been expecting it. We don't plan on returning anytime soon! read more

I wanted a quiet nice Italian restaurant to spent Easter evening; just me. I found Allegro in a Yelp search and liked the reviews. So I decided to try it. I started with fried calamari. They were good in texture however, a little salty. I tend to eat low in salt. Perhaps other people find them just fine... not sure. For entree I picked the Ziti al for no. It was very creamy, cheesy, not salty yet, tasty. I liked it a lot. It does have lots of cheese!!! ...Which I liked. For dessert I asked for a Tiramisu. It was delicious. Very creamy, and not too much coffee kick, well balanced; just a little sweeter than what I prefer but not too sweet. It was good. For drinks I had Cabernet and Pomegranate martini, both really good! So needless to say the service was slow, though not the fault of either the server or the host who were both very cordial. The place is definitely understaffed. Made a reservation a week in advance - the lady who answered the phone assured me I can pick any time as they don't have any reservations for the 11th. I also let them know we are celebrating a birthday... We show up for our reservation and we get seated at a table where the patio entrance is and the door kept getting slammed by the servers who kept going in and out. Really? I called a week in advance for this? For a birthday?! We waited a good 25 minutes to be served and no one came. Once we got up to leave, I guess an employee noticed how long we were waiting without being served and said "sorry" under her breath while we walked out. This was a horrible experience. The hostess informed my friend's young daughter, who had a slurpee type drink in her hand, "we don't allow outside drinks, I can't take you to the table with the drink." Are you kidding me? I'm about to spend money buying three lunches? Maybe it was her first day on the job. Or maybe management doesn't empower employees to make judgement calls. We came in on 8/17 to enjoy your Express Lunch at your Upland location. We checked the website before we came in and it stated the express lunch is served Monday-Saturday and is $15. We came in and were given an express lunch menu that states it is served Monday-Friday. The waitress said the website has not been updated and we cannot order from this menu. This is the only reason we came in and have had issues in the past where the website does not reflect the offers in the restaurant. This is a major inconvenience and we will not be back. The website should be updated and if it is not, it should be honored in the restaurant as it is not the patrons fault. My boyfriend and I went to Caffe Allegro last night in downtown Upland to celebrate Valentine's Day I got the red sangria which is only $9 a glass and it was very tasty and my bf got a Jackson Pinot noir , equally as tasty. For appetizer we got the mixed plate which has prosciutto, salami, green and purple olives, mushrooms, calamari, bruschetta, and caprese salad only $20!! Definitely had leftovers. For dinner he got the surf and turf , filet with shrimp scampi mashed potatoes and roasted asparagus, delicious!! Except the potatoes were a little plain. I got the chicken Marsala with as much cheese as I could fit on the plate...oh my goodness....the chicken Marsala was SO FREAKING GOOD! We really enjoyed our night, food was excellent, drinks were tasty, staff was friendly. Inside decor is chic and the crown molding of this restaurant looks exquisite. I started our lunch off with their signature Pomegranate martini and it was good, a bit messy on the delivery, but good. For appetizers we had their Salumi E Fromaggi & Prosciutto burrata. The asparagus with the burrata was amazing, tender and melts in your mouth! Prosciutto selection of cheeses was amazing. The different cheese and cheeses in both dishes complimented each other very well. For entree I had their Salmone Con Due, it's a good portion of food, so if you have a small appetite, it should fill you up without an appetizer. Similar to the previous dishes, the mushroom and salmon creamy combination was very tasty. I have pretty high expectations when I go to places that say upscale and Allegro did not disappoint. Came into Allegro's tonight to celebrate a friend's birthday. The service was extremely slow. Our server SAMANTHA was kind but zero sense of urgency. Dinner was not busy for a Sunday night. Took 40 minutes to take our order and even longer for the bill. In total 3.5 hour dinner. On Sunday the special is surf and turf and on the website the price is listed at $24. Once we got the bill, we were charged $36. We asked our server to dispute the charge but she said the general manager was not in and the supervisor refused to issue a refund or compensation even though their website is wrong. The only explanation given was, "we have been trying to change the website for some time now." Extremely disappointed with the misleading price and "Sunday Special." We are locals and have gone to this restaurant many times over the past 5 years regularly. Today we had an order of three pastas and one salad. The salad was the wrong salad that was loaded with meat and cheese which was not edible for the person who ordered it who is vegan . Our total was $90 but to return the salad and get the salad that was less money they had to void it and then recharge it at 80.00 , having to wait a week for the money to go back to my account. I had to also drive back to the restaurant and return the salad as well as being charged almost 160.00 for dinner and having to wait 5 to 7days to get my money back . Todays chicken Marsala was PERFECT! The chicken was browned to perfection, the spinach noodles were cooked just right, and there was no overpowering taste of shallots! The bread was assorted too! I mentioned to my server Stephanie how awful my last experience was and she assured me that she would speak to the chef. My meal today not only met my expectations but far exceeded them. Todays visit will be three stars based solely on the inconsistency from this meal to the last one. Nice place for date night. All the wait staff were very kind and attentive. The food was delicious. We ordered the meatball trio and bacon wrapped dates to start. Honestly I loved the meatballs so much that I considered ordering another round to have an as entree. My husband got the Penne Explosion, he enjoyed it, said it had a little bite to it though, so if you don't handle spicy well then you may want to consider something else.
