I've been scoping out this place for the past couple of weeks. It's the first in Edmonton that…read moreoffers hot pot AND bbq... my 2 favourite things! So, yes, I was intrigued! There are only 2 reviews here, but there's a bunch more when you look on google. I guess before there was an issue with the pot (it appears the "bbq" was actually cooked by steam), but they have replaced them with proper heating elements.
We came around 6 on a weekday, and the place was dead. The weather has been nicer out, so it kind of makes sense? There were 2 other parties that came in the span of 1.5 hours though.
Our waiter was very friendly and helpful. He detailed what to order, how to turn on the elements, etc. For the broth, I ordered the 2 flavour: pork bone broth and house special butter spicy soup. Both were flavourful, and the spicy soup had a good kick to it but not unbearable like the traditional szechuan spicy. For the bbq portion, we got the enoki beef rolls and marinated ox tongues. The enoki beef rolls were SO good! Unfortunately, you can only have 1 order/pot, and if you want more, it's an extra charge. Boo! The ox tongues... they were definitely NOT marinated. I had to dip in my sauce for any flavour. Also kind of weird to put bbq on parchment paper?
Speaking of sauces, the sauce station was really lacking. There was a sesame paste that was just that... thick and pasty. There was supposed to be a chive sauce and chopped hot red pepper, but they were missing. I was having spicy soup, so I normally just make: sesame oil, garlic, peanuts, green onion, and cilantro. I am a big fan of peanut sauce and chili garlic sauce, which was not there. My husband mentioned that the hot pot experience wasn't that great for him because there wasn't enough sauces. I agree!
Hot pot items were the usual. The meats were a good, thin cut. I also tried lamb for the first time. It wasn't gamy at all! I had 2 plates of that, it was really nice. Other than that, not anything special to note. But not sure how they could run out of corn when they opened at 4pm?
So, there were some nice things about the restaurant, but I'd like to complain now... I think this was what you were waiting for right? First, it was dead in there when we arrived, yet there was a table right next to us that had not been cleaned. In the 1.5 hrs we were there, it remained dirty. Second, while our waiter was nice, he didn't offer to fill up our broths. Third, does it kill them to put drinks in the fridge? I had an herbal tea and my husband had a coke. Both were warm. I asked for water, and there was no ice. Really? And, lastly, the price! Compared to the other AYCE hot pots in town, this is going to put a dent in your wallet! They charge $32.95, 1 flavour broth is $6.95 and a 2 flavour broth is $8.95. If you want a tasty beverage, you are looking between $4-$9. Doesn't seem very economical to me. You are better off going to the other places. Also if you want bbq buffet, you might as well go to a place that actually specializes in that.
They have potential, and they took some great pictures and videos. I see they want their business to succeed as they have at least changed the heating elements, but I think they should really fix their prices and sauce bar.
