My motorcycle club meets next door to this place, at Ruds, and for over two years I've wanted to check it out, but due to the fact that they close at 6 we never were able to make the cut. Yet today, when an intense craving for gyros hit my girlfriend and I early in the afternoon, we decided to finally come here. As I write this I'm beating myself up for not going earlier. We parked at the ample lot across the street and walked into the store to be greeted by an extremely friendly manager that immediately recognized us as first timers. He told us about the specials on Tuesdays and Sundays where the ridiculously low priced sandwiches (the most expensive is 4.99) are even further discounted a dollar. We ordered a gyro, a falafel sandwich, and an order of fried kibbe to go. While we waited for our food to be prepared (the kibbe and lamb are freshly fried for each order) we explored the rest of the store and discovered a much wider selection of wines and beers than we expected. The owner also told us in this time that they were planning to start closing later during the summer. We paid the tab, which came out to about 11 dollars, and went home. We had decided to share our sandwiches, but when the foil wrappings came off and out came pouring the mountainous heap of delicious lamb in the gyro, my girlfriend and I lost all civility and dug in. The Gyro was simply amazing; the lamb was perfect and the grilled tomatoes accompanied it deliciously. The Falafel Sandwich was OK but paled in comparison to the Gyro, it had beets inside, which added an interesting dimension to it, but it just didn't match up. The Kibbe was good as well, but the yogurt sauce the came with them was a little disappointing; we ended up just throwing it out and eating them by themselves. I really wish this place stayed open until later, it would make a killing from the Ruds crowd. I think I'm about to become a regular here, only next time I won't be sharing. read more

Had the gyro plate and the Sampler #1 delivered. Pleasantly surprised! I am very picky about my Mediteranean/Lebanese food and I enjoyed everything from the tabouleh to the stuffed grape leaves. Perfect amount of lemon. Well spiced kibbeh. Hummus was solid. The only thing I need to try (that didn't come with my order) is their toum. If the toum is authentic it will solidify Al quick stop as one of the best Lebanese restaurants the city has to offer. Best quick stop in town! Don't expect the best prices, as it is a quick stop. However, it is very convenient when you need a few items, but don't really want to go to a real grocery. They have a decent beer and wine selection and the people who work here are friendly. The thing that really sets this quick stop apart from others is the little restaurant hiding inside. It is a weird greek / mexican cafe. The Greek stuff is some of the best around. The falafel and schwarma are great. And the pickles are awesome! read more

I will never return because of the sexual innuendos made by the owner to my girlfriend and me. We came to pay and he first asked me if I called in my order because "I recognize your sexy voice." He said. Then old man proceeded to direct me to "stick it in" seemingly referring to the card but after a moment he followed up with "that's what she says ,right? I mean that's the only way". Not caring that we were uncomfortable he topped it off by saying " I can help I'm a nice guy." Been here many times but Al crossed the line . I left feeling disrespected and disgusted. I love the variety they offer for the prices. If you love Mediterranean food and want a deal for your food, this is the place to eat at. I usually get the Gyro Entree or the sandwich, and they are very generous with their portions. The meat is always seasoned so well and blends perfectly with the whole meal itself. They have an amazing hot sauce as well that goes with just about most of the orders. This place is literaly a convenience store so not exactly the place you go to dine in for a nice ambiance but it's a place where you get really good food at. I also love that they are on uber eats. Very unassuming little joint inside of a convenience store next door to Rudyard's. But do not let the location deceive you, this place has REALLY good sandwiches. The gyro is loaded with skillfully spiced and tender lamb, grilled onions and tomatoes. The cool yogurt sauce is a nice compliment to the hot sandwich. OMG I LOVE THIS PLACE Ok, I'm calming down. But, seriously though, this place is right on the money for a number of reasons. Firstly, this place is all about value. You will spend $8 here on a meal that will last you 2 days or feed you and your friend. (the problem is, it's so darn good it will not last that long, I'm telling ya!). Sandwiches are $4-5, and you can add a cucumber salad, rice, and hummus to them with a "platter" option for just a few dollars more. I have to admit, to the average Houstonian this place might be a bit intimidating - imagine a truck stop, Quick-e mart, etc... But it is super clean, well-organized, and believe you me, once you taste the delicate balance of Mediterranean flavors, and your mouth does a little two step/samba/salsa, you will be HOOKED! The hummus is outstanding, nutty, and creamy, the gyro is possibly the best tasting meat-wise I've ever had, and the falafel is pretty boss. I have a friend who swears by the shwarma and kafta: garlicky and minty meaty goodness. This place also has a variety of beer, wine, beverages, and anything else you might need. Although the food from this mini-mart wasn't mind-blowing for me, it still hit the spot, is pretty affordable and a nice alternative to Niko Niko's if you don't want to wait in their line. I ordered a simple gyro and fries to go. The fries were nothing special, just Cajun seasoned frozen fries. I will be skipping those next time. The Gyro was pretty dang good for a food mart, filled to the brim with meat and onions. It comes with a tub of tzatziki sauce, which I used liberally. This is my first time eating here but definitely won't be my last. I ordered the gyro sandwich with fries and also the gyro quesadilla. The food was a good size portion and the fries were seasoned( which i loved) ! Everything was fresh made to order and piping hot. Within my dining experience, i counted at least 10 ppl come in to order within 15 minutes. The owner is nice and there's also extra discounts when u like their fb page and visit the ig page. One of my favorite 'hole in the wall' places in Houston. The owner, Al, is an awesome guy! My best friend in high school had introduced me to this place over 5 years ago, and I still come here when I come into the city (I live out in the 'burbs of Cypress). Every time I've come here, and the visits are far and few in between, the quality of the food and nice employees doesn't change. I typically get the Golden Crispy Chicken wrap, and it is delicious! But I've also had their hummus, falafel, gyro, and schawarma, all very good! And even though I don't come in all the time, Al has remembered who I am, which says a lot about how detail-oriented the guy is. Most of the time, when people think Greek or Mediterranean in Houston, they immediately jump to Niko Niko's. I like Niko's, but I also like to tell people that there are other places that can be considered similar if not better, and cheaper; and Al's one of my favorite places to take them to! read more

It's a mini restaurant in a quickie mart. This is one of those places that you go to, not expecting much but you taste their food, and it blows your mind! My hubby and I come here at least once every couple of weeks. Their hummus is one of the best, very smooth, not too lemony, and fresh! The tabouleh is soooo good! I can't ever get enough of it. They also give you a ton of food where it would make 2-3 meals. I haven't tried their Tex MEX items but the Mediterranean is awesome. Love this place. Since moving to Houston we seldom eat at the same place more than once because we want to try EVERY restaurant in Houston. BUT, have been to AL Quick Stop at least 4 times in 2 months. It's just so gooood and soooo cheap and soooo fast (and lucky for us ...sooooo close) how can you go wrong? We've tried a few things like the veggie sampler platters but the beef gyro platter is where it's at! The owner Al is a sweetheart and I even tried to convince him to move his store to the Heights (to no avail). The cafe is right next to Rudyards and as everyone else has already pointed out, it's the most unassuming place to find such good Mediterranean food (or that random taco). Even when it was voted Houston Best for falafels a few years back by the Houston Press I overlooked the place because I was convinced there was no diner inside. They've recently revamped their menu which sadly, bumped up their prices. Now my beloved falafels are $4.50 but they have also extended their hours to 3am on the weekends!! But OK, still not bad for fabulous Middle Eastern, right? So we ordered some takeout: hummus appetizer, chicken kabob, and falafel sandwich. Both of us felt the food was just OK. --Falafel sandwich was very dry, and the falafel did not taste freshly made. There were only three small falafel, and the rest of the sandwich was pickled veggies. Store-bought pita and no tahini or other sauce. --Chicken in the kabob was OK, but the vegetables were huge chunks and completely raw inside. Came with bad Tex-Mex rice. Essentially, nothing was edible except the chicken. --Hummus appetizer felt like someone was pulling our leg. $4.50 for a small container of hummus with nothing to eat it with. No pita, no nothing! What am I supposed to do, dig in with a spoon? Hummus quality was just OK. It may have been an off night, but at $18 for the lot, we felt like we could do better at a long list of other casual Middle Eastern spots. The food here is surprisingly really good and reasonably priced; I get a gyro sandwich all the time. The prices for other items are expectedly high, this is a convenience store, after all. But you've got to understand that for these types of stores, profit margin is razor-thin. They stand apart from other convenience stores due to their great beverage selection, alcoholic and not. They're not the friendliest, but once they recognize you as a regular, that changes. If you're a girl buying cigarettes, however, they will flirt with you. Wow! So yummy! I was craving grape leaves (yes, I'm weird) and somehow I stumbled upon this place. We got a sampler with hummus, tabouleh, falafel, grape leaves, and cauliflower. We also got gyro fries, a kabob platter, and hummus. Portions are hugeeee and we have lots of leftovers. Sauces were incredible. I didn't eat the meat but bf only had good things to say. I was at Anvil for the first time, just soaking in one of the greatest cocktail bars in North America (allegedly) as my liver was doing it's own soaking in. My friend mentions she wants some food and the bartender recommends Al's Quick Stop for some gyros. Oh, and they're better than Niko Niko's too, he says. There was so much new stuff going on all at once. I was at this chic bar with a tropic cocktail and all its colors, and then some stranger tells me that Niko's is trash and I should go to some "AL'S QUICK STOP"?! I was bewildered, insulted even. We pull up and park on the road. It's exactly how a Quick Stop Shop should look like, bars running up and down the doors with a rusted bell that rings as you enter. The attendant doesn't show up until she notices us at the counter ready to order. This chick wasn't even Greek. I can't say the workers at Niko's are either, but that's beside the point right now. My mindset was to defy everything about Al's. We order a gyro and a chicken shawarma. There's some tables in the store, but we decide to go outside. So, chicken shawarma was bad. But who cares, it's a chicken shawarma. Let's talk about the gyro. It's a fajita street gyro, that's how I would describe it. A little greasy, has caramelized onions, and stuffed with lightly charred gyro meat. Being that I bought this gyro at a quick stop, this street gyro fit right in. And it was yummmmy, the way only street food can be. Not necessarily better than Niko's ('cause the chicken shawarma sure wasn't), but the gyro IS quite good. I never thought there'd be a legit Mediterranean grill in the back of a place like this, but thankfully we have the internet. Came in to try their chicken shawarma sandwich and falafel, which I heard were some of the best in Houston. Decent shawarma, but ehh wasn't that big a fan of the falafel unfortunately. The falafel (5 for $4.50) was way over fried with too crunchy and rock-hard of a crust. The chickpeas inside were ground with parsley/herbs with a nice coarse texture, but weren't that flavorful. Also kinda dry. Not bad but just disappointing for the expectations, as I've had much better falafel from so many other places. The tahini this comes with wasn't that great either and more on the bitter side. The kibbeh (2 for $3.99) I can't recommend much either. It was the opposite of the falafel - underfried and undercooked. The bulgur shell was thin and barely crisp on the outside, and the ground lamb inside was pink, mushy, and seemed kind of raw. Didn't have much taste. I really liked the chicken shawarma sandwich ($5.99) though. This might be the one of the only places where the chicken actually has a noticeably smoky flavor and smell. Not sure if they cook it on a spit or not but they must have grilled it on high heat or with charcoal at some point. The sandwich is double wrapped with thin pitas which I haven't seen before, but it works. The pita was super soft, chewy, and makes up for the flimsy-ness with an effortless bite. The only issue with the wrap was the garlic "paste" sauce. No way can you call this weak stuff garlic sauce! All mayo. read more

I usually find Yelp to be a great help in finding my way to new places, but I was seriously disappointed this time. The atmosphere is just what the name says - a convenience store - which could be pretty charming. However, when we approached the kitchen, the manager was too busy arguing with another customer to acknowledge us. There were also some really obnoxious, loud, inappropriate guys sitting at the tables in the small seating area. I'm totally willing to acknowledge that we caught this place and the employees on a bad day (atmosphere-wise) and would possibly give it another chance...except that the food was terrible! It's definitely a few dollars cheaper than Niko Niko's, but the quality and taste was not good. I ordered the Sampler #1 - the falafel were really burnt, the hummus was bland and uninspiring, the tabbouleh didn't have any bulgur in it and was basically just chopped parsley, and the pita tasted like cardboard.
