If you're just driving through, the sign might make you think Al's is just a typical corner shop with some rather mediocre food. Hell, at least i did until I ordered some takeout with my friend. Fast forward a couple of weeks, I go to my friends house and then realized that THAT was Al's, some of the best Mediterranean food I've had here. Went inside and it's a small little shop with four seats. Food is in a small styrofoam container, but what's in it is some juicy pieces of gyro meat, excellent hummus, fresh, vibrant tabbouleh, and warm pita. The only thing I can fault them on from what I've had is that the rice is always undercooked, but that seems like a typical thing coming from an Asian guy. I was looking for a place to eat before going to Rudyard's for the storytime event, and Al's was the perfect place as it was right next to Rudyard's! So Al's is inside a convenience store but they have some tables and chairs both on the inside and outside, and its great for a casual dining experience. My bf and I shared the Mediterranean sampler #1 and for the mains I got the falafel plate and he got the kafta kabob plate. Overall, the food was super yummy and the portions are very generous!! A diamond in the rough! Looks can be deceiving (and I guess the name can be as well), but there's a plethora of goodness hidden inside these walls. Some of the best gyro meat, fattoush, Greek salad, fries, hummus, etc. you'll find in these parts, or anywhere in Houston, for that matter. I ordered the Kafta Kabob Plate. WOW. Let me start off by saving the portions are great, you can definitely share this with someone (or save it for yourself, it's your life). You get the kabob, rice, cucumber salad, grilled vegetables & hummus with pita bread. AMAZING. The aroma from the grilled vegetables was sooo good, I knew it was gonna be delicious. I cannot believe how good this place is! 5 years I've been driving by this spot and never took a moment to try it until today. Had the Gyro entree and was floored! Another reviewer had written that they thought it was better than Niko Niko's, so on a lark, I decided to give it a try. My wife swears that it is the most authentic Mediterranean food she had had in Houston. This was my first time eating food from Al's. I ordered the chicken kabob dinner. The kabobs were tender and had an excellent grilled flavor. A huge pita was included with the dinner. It was pretty good but I wish the pita was a little thicker. I honestly could've eaten like 2 or servings of the kabobs. The dinner also comes with hummus. I got turned on to this place while trying to pickle myself at The Next Door for the past 6 years and even though I don't drink anymore I still stop in for their gyro plate. My motorcycle club meets next door to this place, at Ruds, and for over two years I've wanted to check it out, but due to the fact that they close at 6 we never were able to make the cut. Yet today, when an intense craving for gyros hit my girlfriend and I early in the afternoon, we decided to finally come here. As I write this I'm beating myself up for not going earlier. We parked at the ample lot across the street and walked into the store to be greeted by an extremely friendly manager that immediately recognized us as first timers. He told us about the specials on Tuesdays and Sundays where the ridiculously low priced sandwiches (the most expensive is 4.99) are even further discounted a dollar. We ordered a gyro, a falafel sandwich, and an order of fried kibbe to go. While we waited for our food to be prepared (the kibbe and lamb are freshly fried for each order) we explored the rest of the store and discovered a much wider selection of wines and beers than we expected. The owner also told us in this time that they were planning to start closing later during the summer. We paid the tab, which came out to about 11 dollars, and went home. We had decided to share our sandwiches, but when the foil wrappings came off and out came pouring the mountainous heap of delicious lamb in the gyro, my girlfriend and I lost all civility and dug in. The Gyro was simply amazing; the lamb was perfect and the grilled tomatoes accompanied it deliciously. The Falafel Sandwich was OK but paled in comparison to the Gyro, it had beets inside, which added an interesting dimension to it, but it just didn't match up. The Kibbe was good as well, but the yogurt sauce the came with them was a little disappointing; we ended up just throwing it out and eating them by themselves. I really wish this place stayed open until later, it would make a killing from the Ruds crowd. I think I'm about to become a regular here, only next time I won't be sharing. read more

I came in at 2pm on a Saturday and it was empty. I see the food just sitting there getting cold and not fresh cooked, and I think, there's no way this is going to be good. But I was dead wrong! I tried the gyro sandwich and the gyro plate. The gyro meat is probably the best I've had in Houston. Seasoned perfectly, very tender, juicy, and flavorful meat. I watched them slice huge amounts of gyro off the vertical spit and put it on the grill with the onions and tomatoes. I like that they grill the onions so the raw taste of the onion does not overpower the meat. For the sandwich, they fill in the meat/onion/tomatoes into a pita and wrap it in foil and give you tzatziki sauce on the side. Wish they gave more sauce. It's a small sandwich but has a ton of meat. It's cheap at $6 For the plate, they scoop up cucumber salad (very sour but still pretty good), hummus (has pickles on top - that's new to me. The hummus was pretty plain), rice (very fragrant rice!), and a lot of the meat/onion/tomato grilled mix on top. A pita and tzatziki sauce on the side. Everything is made from scratch here, Nothing is prepackaged. Gyro: Based on Meat and Pita alone this is one of the best Gyro's in Houston and it's one of the cheapest and they are generous, Since we had it delivered the tomato and onion were a bit soggy but still damned good, This is the only reason I'm giving this joint 4 and not 5 stars. The Sampler #1 is; Two kibbeh, two falafel, two stuffed grape leaves, tabboli, pita and hummus dip (with pickles) All of it was top notch, this was the perfect order - Everything was super flavorful and seasoned perfectly.
