This was a nice find on a cold day after an afternoon movie. We had hibachi and the owner himself cooked our meal. We sat next to a gentleman he was a regular and we agreed with his sentiments that this place definitely catered and had really good food. Okay... so I live in the area and I used to come here at least once a week when I was in high school, which was also around the time the place opened. Decent sushi decent sushi chefs and hibachi chefs. The restaurant has one problem: the manager. While coming home from work I decided to stop by since it was close and I was having a good day so why not compliment it further with sushi!? So I pull in but I'm lazy so I call in the order, the front desk answered I placed my lunch order which was a roll combo but instead of the spider roll i wanted spicy tuna. The front desk lady explained to me that she was new and needed to get confirmation from the manager that it was ok for her to substitute a roll. Cool, no problem. A few mins later the manager picks up the phone confused about my order... I spent 10mins trying to explain to him what I wanted from the menu.. I finally got so frustrated I walked into the restaurant and picked up a menu and used it to show him what I wanted. He (very rudely) agreed and walked away. I pay, and sit down to wait for my food. The manager comes back a few mins later and tell me I need to "cool down" .... um excuse me? He tells me that he saw me throw a pen.... which I did not do. So I proceeded to tell him that I have done nothing wrong and I don't appreciate receiving shitty customer service when placing my order, only to give you my money anyway, for you to tell me I need to "cool down". He then offered me a free "ice water" which is already free. And I told him that he better get out of my face before I ask for my money back. He apologized and walked away, the front desk girl was horrified and apologized to me for the manager's actions... long story short I got my mediocre sushi and left that shit hole and I will never EVER be going back to that place. I do not understand how you could treat a very consistent customer who's been coming there since you opened with such disrespect and disregard. It took everything out of me to not ask for my money back. Never going back. There's a better sushi place up the road called Fuji sushi- better quality fish, better atmosphere, better service, better sushi. You're welcome. read more

My husband and I have been here a few times and have really enjoyed the experience. We are just now experimenting with sushi, and so far, the few items we have tried have been excellent. The happy hour menu allows us to try various things and find what we like. The staff is always friendly and attentive. We haven't tried the hibachi grill yet, but we plan on going back for it. We came across this restaurant last Friday night. We had just watched an early movie and were hungry but didn't know what we were in the mood for. Then I remembered a family member had talked about eating sushi at a restaurant in the HEB shopping center. My boyfriend and I LOVE sushi and decided to give it a try. We arrived around 9pm and realized they closed in an hour. Hoping we would have enough time to eat comfortably, we walked in and were created by the nicest hostess we've seen in a longtime. Right away we were seated and our drink orders were taken. We ended up getting the Mizo roll and Shaggy dog roll. They were delicious! We are definitely going back and I even put their info in my phone just in case we wanna do take out! Very nice atmosphere and staff... Can't wait to go back and try more rolls! read more

My boyfriend and I are regulars at Akaihi. They have the best sushi that we have found in Houston. He appreciates high quality fish as he is from California. The staff remembers us everytime and they are very personable. Kevin is the main sushi chef there and he knows exactly what we like. He is making our crab salad appetizer for us, which is awesome, as soon as we sit down. It's such a shame that more people don't check it out. The manager is also very friendly and very clearly dedicated to his job and ensuring that the service and food are excellent. The restaurant is very clean and well kept. The pricing is extremely reasonable, considering the fish is fresh and received from Japan. Overall, I could not ask for a better sushi experience in Houston and will continue to be a regular at Akaihi. read more

This place is close to home, and their sushi is pretty good. I usually start off with their spicy edamame, which is good. I also like the spicy salmon roll,and the shaggy dog. I've had their hibachi one time here, and it was okaayyy... not bad, but not great. I usually have a good experience here with attentive waitresses, but on this visit, I felt totally ignored, which is why I only gave 3 stars. My friend got there before me and ordered for us, and when I got there, our food came. He brought it to us and just walked away without asking me if i needed anything. ( I didn't get my drink yet) He walked to the only 2 tables that had people and helped them out and just kept passing our table. We literally had to call for his attention just so my kids and I can get our drinks and spoons to eat their fried rice with. When getting his attention to ask for something, he was so quick to walk away I wouldn't even finish what i was saying. Their small side of fried rice is only $2 & good & comes with more than you'd expect. I always get it for my kids. Other than the waitor ignoring us, the food was good as usual. read more

I loved this place! I went with a large group of friends and we sat at the hibachi grill. The hibachi was amazing. I don't even like shrimp, and the hibachi shrimp was delicious! The filet mignon and friend rice were delicious as well! I'll definitely be coming back to eat here soon. read more

Recently had a birthday party here, we had a party of around 40 people. We were all at the restaurant before 7. We were all ready to order before 7, but nobody came to take our order. Our drinks were constantly empty, our waitress was rude and honestly acted like she was crazy. They gave us happy hour menus so we all were expecting happy hour prices, but to our surprise we were informed we would be paying full price when we got our bill because they said happy hour ended at 7. Even though we were ready to order before that and we weren't able to because they were slacking. After an hour of arguing with each member of my family they would not give us happy hour prices still and we finally just paid and left. The manager and waitress were literally yelling at us. They completely ruined my great grandmothers birthday along with everyone else's Friday night. We will not be back. read more

I had a vey negative experience at the restaurant involving the owner. I ordered the same meal I've ordered several times before (combo steak and chicken), but when I got the meal, there was shrimp under my steak. I politely mentioned that there must be a mistake. The owner got upset and became rude and said that the shrimp was part of the appetizer and always comes in the meal. I explained that in the past, I had gotten it as an appetizer and not mixed in my meat. I also shared that I had a slight allergy and usually when the appetizer came, I just gave it to someone else. He kept on insisting and getting quite unprofessional including telling us that he picks his customers and doesn't want us there. He said that if there is an allergy, we should say so in advance. Again, I explained, it was never an issue before and that I had never gotten the appetizer shrimp mixed in(technically hidden under) with my meal. It was so surprising as I had been there before and had business meetings and family meals without any issue. When I mentioned that he was being unprofessional in his demeanor and making a huge deal for something that he could have just said a quick sorry and just fix it, he became belligerent and yelled "why would I say I'm sorry?". His tone of voice and demeanor were condescending and highly aggressive. his hand motions and facial expressions were something to wonder how someone can handle this business for this long with that kind of unprofessional conduct. He went on and on about having his business for thirty years and always cooking it this way. This was so surreal as an experience. I decided we were not going to stay to finish the meal and offered to just pay for the appetizers. He came back to the table and it was another round of arguing. The owner did comp the appetizers and we left with a direct comment from him not to come to his restaurant again. As a repeat customer, I have to say how disappointing and unprofessional the owner's demeanor was. Imagine if a serious issue comes up, how would he respond? This reflected so poorly on the restaurant. The waitresses were very sweet, apologizing and I apologized to them for having to work with an owner that behaves this way. I'm sorry, but there are too many restaurants to accept this kind of behavior from an owner while you're trying to have a peaceful meal with your young daughter. read more

The WORST experience in my life (in a restaurant that is)....My daughter wanted hibachi so I yelped what was near us beside Shogun which has not received favorable reviews lately. I found this place and all seemed well. On a Saturday night we were seated right away at a hibachi station...The waiter who seemed like a nice kid said hey we wont be ready for a while as we only have two chefs tonight and we said that's ok we are not in a hurry we could have a couple drinks and possibly and app...The waiter got our drinks and said if you are ready to order I can take it but it is going to be a while, which we were fine with. My daughter is a vegetarian and asked for Tofu they said ok and I ordered the Filet and wife ordered chicken. The waiter came back and said we wont hibachi the Tofu? My wife asked why and they said the chef said no...Ok...The whole point of going was for our daughter who wanted hibachi...So were waiting and relaxing we get through this and I said, hey since you haven't prepared anything yet can I get the Sea Bass instead as I missed this on the HIBACHI menu and he said sure no problem...He comes out like 10 minutes later and says we cant hibachi the Sea bass we will prepare it in back? So I'm like what? why? he said the chef said they don't do that hibachi...So 50 minutes into our visit still no food brought out to cook and I said well then how about the scallops? can we do the scallops hibachi? This is where it gets interesting...The chef who I assume is the owner comes out and starts yelling at me in front of the entire restaurant..."No more order changes" with a bowl full of scallops in his hand...I'm like what? are you kidding me? I asked the waiter, and no food was even CLOSE to being brought out on the cart to cook yet and I've now been here over an hour seated...An empathetic lady at the table said to him" Then why do you have Sea Bass on the hibachi menu?" Her husband was laughing and I was in shock as my wife is saying don't create a scene so I didn't say anything as I didn't want to disappoint my 14 year old daughter. A little more...I'm 54 years old and have NEVER changed my order in my LIFE, never sent food back and have always been pretty chill. Even the waiter was embarrassed and I think in shock as to how he acted....He could have instructed the waiter to say hey, they already started it in the back is that ok? Looking back it is pretty funny and we get a laugh out of it. read more

The hosts with the purple hair and piercings all over her face was the rudest person ever. So im standing in line with my boyfriend and shes on the phone, which is fine, until it takes her 10 minutes to get off, while she has the waitress standing there looking at us, not knowing what to do. So we asked for a booth, no big deal right, until she says that we cant sit there cause we didnt make reservations and it has to be three or more. Whats so funny is that not 2 minutes went by an two women were walking out from the same area we wanted our booth in, not three. So we left. Never going back again. read more

Our family has eaten here three times since Akaihi has opened. We rarely eat out, so that shows how much we really enjoy Akaihi. The food is great, fresh. Waiting staff are very helpful. Good prices too. We have only eaten in the reg. dining area, not the grill tables. We love sushi, so we just haven't eaten at the grill tables. I have had their shrimp tempura, it's good, A nice light batter. Plus, they have Mochi Japanese Ice cream, their Green tea is the best!! read more
