First, you should be aware that the claim on the website of "24/7 same-day & emergency service on all residential door repairs" only refers to the phone answering service. But I'll tell you my story and you can judge for yourself.
We notice that the garage door had gone askew and would not close (even after disconnecting from the electronic opener). It was crooked and one of the wheels had jumped the track. A quick Google search turned up Affordable Door so we gave them a shot. They said they would be there the next day between 2-4. Around 4, I received a call that they were held up at another location and wouldn't get out until 7, but they could reschedule for the next day and they would take $25 off the price as a courtesy. Ok. Not ideal and my neighbors who are trying to sell their house are freaking out at our trashy looking door because they have open houses scheduled, but things happen. I get that. So far so good.
The next day, at the scheduled time, they showed up, looked at the door and said that the repair would cost $195 to put everything back. They also cautioned that there was only one spring and it really should have two which they could install for $365. Over the past 10y, the door had only had one other issue, at which time the repair company replaced ALL of the rails for a total of $150. While I thought the $195 was high, I figured with the $25 discount I could live with it and then shop around for a place to do the spring work at a more reasonable price. I opted for him to simply get it working again. 15m later, the door was back on track. I tested it up and down one time and it looked great. I was very happy. Then he gave me the bill for $245. Apparently, they tack on an additional $100 as a "service charge". I am still not sure what that is all about. I was put off, but thankful to have the door fixed.
That evening, when I opened the door, it jumped the track again! They promise a 6-month warranty in the contract that I signed when I paid. So, we called them back. The site says 24/7 service. It was 7pm. They said they'd get someone out. 30m later, we called back and were told, "Well, I sent an email. I guess I can send another one." Apparently, there was nothing more they could do.
The next morning, we receive a voicemail apologizing for not getting back to us, but he had left early and didn't get the email, but would come back out after 2pm. We missed him by 5m. But while he was here, he put the door back on the tracks and we were able to close it. However ... when he called to say that he had completed the repair, he claimed that the door jumped the track because he believed it had closed on something in the way and that he wasn't going to charge us this time, but if he had to come back, he would charge us! But whatever, the door was now fixed. Or so we thought.
That evening, around 7pm, we opened the door to take the garbage out and ON THE WAY UP, the door jumped the track! There was nothing in the way and it didn't close on anything; it was simply not properly fixed. Of course, now there is a huge storm coming and we can't afford to leave the door wide open all night during the storm. So, we call them back, citing the 24/7 emergency service promised on the website. They said they make some calls. They called back at 7:20pm and said, "Unfortunately I don't have any trucks out there tonight the last appointment we give out is between four and six."
Frustrated and worried about the storm, we unhooked the door from all cables and with a neighbor's help were able to get the door mostly down, albeit crooked.
The next morning, they called back and said that it was our fault for not opting to replace the spring and until we did that, the door would never operate properly. I have since learned that this is a complete fabrication and not only that the springs have nothing to do with the problems we were seeing, but also that it is not possible to tell if the spring is about to fail until it actually fails.
Giving up on Affordable Door, we found someone else (The Door Doctor) who came out the same day, replaced some hinges and a roller, and even threw in a new remote for a total of $200!
We will be following up with Affordable Door on their Money-back guarantee on the signed contract, which states that they will make every effort to satisfy the customer and in the event that the customer cannot be satisfied, we can send a written request for 1/2 of the charges to be returned.
Hopefully, they will honor the refund and I will be able to follow this up with at least one positive thing. read more
