Food was delicious. The overall atmosphere is cozy and inviting. Service seemed a bit uppity and not genuine. Overall, it's well worth the price for the quality and well executed menu. read more

This place is wonderful ! The food was great and the service and all the people working there were kind and efficient. The chef greeted everyone and asked how the food was and answered any questions. They had social distancing with plexiglass between the tables and everyone wore masks. We felt very safe. We loved everything we ate and the panna cota was the best I have had. A real gem in Maplewood. I would definitely go here again!! Next time I would try the tasting menu. read more

Whoa, how disappointing! Been here numerous times and never had a bad meal, but when your best meal was the salad, well something didn't work out tonight. Our waiter started off slow, no water, no drinks, no bread, had to grab the olive oil and salt and pepper off another table. Our waiter said I will be back in a minute, more like 10 minutes, I watched him buss a table while we had nothing, wrong priority! Once he got going he was fine, but sadly the food was inconsistent. The salad and egg raviolo was excellent but the branzino was badly overcooked. Dead on arrival, thank goodness the vegetables were perfectly cooked. Such a prized fish needed more care than what my poor fish received, no flavor and the overcooked skin just made it worse! When you pay 3 c- bills I expect better. Got to wonder who was cooking tonight. Dessert was good. I will stay at the Crossing where the food is always consistently great. Last, I realize that every night will not be perfect but when you spend that much u expect that much, especially the main course, at least I do. read more

Based on everything I had read and heard about Acero, I expected a food experience tons better than the one I encountered last weekend. I was intrigued by the menu, despite it not being very Italian-esque (outside of the pasta options). I debated whether or not to do the tasting or stick with a tried and true pasta dish; I decided to go with the latter since our waitress claimed it was some of the best in St. Louis. Was it bad? Not at all. Was it the best? Not even close. On top of the portion sizes being very small, I wasn't much impressed. My husband got the tasting, and while the egg raviolo (another of their claim to fame) was pretty solid, the other dishes were not. His lamb was so rough that he could barely cut it, and the dessert was average. I'm sure a restaurant like Acero is worth another shot; perhaps it just wasn't our night, but when you can honestly say your cocktail (limoncello and champagne - very good!) was the best part of your meal, that doesn't so much persuading to return. read more

Bottom line - Didn't live up to the hype for me. Ambience is good but the front room is more welcoming than the back room. Tried the $40 tasting menu which was a great option as I wanted to try lots. Started with the Insalata Mista. This salad looked awesome but lacked any real flavor. It was simply bland :( Next the Gnocco Frito - Prosciuttto on a fried beignet. It was just that. No depth in flavor. Doubled up on the pastas. The Rye Gnocchi with beef cheek. House made obviously but the gnocchi were mush and the flavors just not there sorry to say. Finally, the pièce de résistance, the egg raviolo. This was to die for and the only tasting dish the left an impression. Very rich but very refined yet simple and just very good - are sure you like ricotta. 5 stars for the raviolo. The other dishes get 2-3 stars. I will mention also that my wife had the local chicken, very much like a piccata and it was wonderful. Maybe we just needed to order the right thing to get this a better rating. As far as the bar, had the house old fashioned and the Negromara. Both good. We did have a bottle of Pinot Noir. It was very very light tasting even for a Pinot. It also had light color which was weird but the flavor was actually decent. So light tasting that I wouldn't even classify it as a Pinot Noir. Can't remember the winery but it was odd. Small place, nice ambience. Wished I liked it better. Maybe another time. Maybe. read more

We just got home from Acero and we had a wonderful evening! We had reservations for 7pm. We walked in at 6:50 and they pulled menus and sat us immediately. We both opted for the four course tasting with the wine flights. Wine flights are based on what you order, so don't be afraid to add it! I had the barata, tagliolini, scallops, and chocolate torte for my dinner. My spouse had the mixed greens, linguini nero, ribeye, and cannelloni. The scallops were the best scallops I have ever had in my entire life. Everything was delicious and worth every penny. Great ambiance for an anniversary dinner... my spouse reserved a table through OpenTable and our printed menu wished us a happy anniversary across the top! Arra was our server and she was extremely attentive and didn't have us waiting for anything. I can't wait to go back! read more

While St. Louis is known for their old school Italian (and the Hill is filled with great options) this is where you need to go!! Absolutely everything about this place is what you want it to be. Located in downtown Maplewood it's perfect for a date night out! Atmosphere: low lighting, simple but cozy, great for a small group or dinner for 2. You can watch them make the meat and cheese plate right at the counter! Service: friendly, attentive and very knowledgeable about all things pasta/Italian. Food: THE FOOD! This places makes it well. I never wanted this meal to end. I had the egg raviolo and will get that every single time I go back (and I will go back!). For dessert we had the warm chocolate torte (must be paired with a cup of coffee). At this point I was stuffed to the brim but couldn't resist that perfectly baked torte. Where to begin!? The experience was absolutely phenomenal. From the hostess, to our waiter (Jerry), to the bartender, every staff member was warm and attentive. The food was incredible. We had the 4 course tasting menu (totally worth it) and loved every bite. The chicken is outstanding, and one of the best dishes I have ever had. The egg raviolo was also a stand-out dish. This was my first time at Acero. I attended a friend's birthday dinner, and they set us up in the private dining room. There was a set, three course menu. The bread and olive oil to begin the meal was fresh and extremely tasty. I ordered a la carte and got the Tagliolini. What an excellent choice! The pasta was the perfect texture. The brown butter complemented the pasta and wild mushrooms so well, and the parmigiano overall gave the dish a ton of flavor. I was extremely impressed with the dish, and the price was reasonable and worth it. I will definitely return here! read more

Numerous friends raved about this place, and I'm glad I finally got to give it a go! Made a reservation for a Friday night around 8p. The place was packed and buzzing. The restaurant is quaint and cozy. It has a certain charm, and ambiance that makes it a good spot for a date night. The service was fantastic. We had visits several times through our meal, and never had to worry about our glasses being empty of wine or water. I ordered a carafe of pinot grigio, and was instead given pinot noir. As someone who doesn't really complain often, I said nothing. I enjoy pinot noir as well so it was no big deal to me. Upon asking for another carafe, the waitress actually realized her mistake and didn't even charge us for the first one! That't awesome service. The food was tasty. I had the squid ink pasta, which is one of my favorites. It did not disappoint. The crown jewel of the evening however was dessert. The caramel panna cotta is to die for. A must if you try this place out! read more

I was not in love with Acero. We went on a date night on a Tuesday. The restaurant is on a corner and has a nice little courtyard out front and a really inviting front room. We unfortunately were put in the back room which has a little bit less ambiance, although it is probably quieter. Service was exemplary and the waiter did a great job of explaining the menu, the special 4 course tasting, and giving recommendations. The tasting menu is the best "deal" on the menu because ordering, say, a salad and an entree will be about the same price as getting a salad, pasta, entree, and dessert. The tasting menu means you pick whatever you want from the 4 sections of the menu and you get smaller portions of all of the items you select than if you had done them a la carte (some items had upcharges). Pretty good deal of you choose wisely. I apparently didn't choose wisely and didn't like 2 out of my 4 items. I had the soup of the day which was pretty fishy and really greasy, but the "base" had good flavor. I had the mushroom tagliolini which was phenomenal, and I wished I had just ordered it as my entree. The Branzino was decent but it was on a bed of some kind of bean paste that was very unpleasant. The flavors didn't go well together and it was my least favorite of what I ordered. The Cheesecake was amazing. My husband loved his choices (including pasta Bolognese and ribeye). Based on my meal, I don't know if I would put this back on my list to try again. read more

Flew in from Boston for my birthday dinner. The Gnocchi Fritto alone are worth the trip. Wasn't disappointed. Va Bene!

For some reason, I had a hankering for mushroom pasta. After looking through the restaurants on the Hill, I wasn't quite seeing anything that sparked my fancy. But once I opened up the search, I landed on Acero. Lovely restaurant with very attentive service. I ordered the Tagolini, warm chocolate torte, and a quartino of red wine. All lovely and exactly what I wanted. My only wish was that my portion of pasta was bigger, but that's my five mile run speaking. Next time, I want to try the tasting menu to try more of the menu! I found street parking pretty easily on a Thursday night. read more

I took my best friend here for her birthday and we loved it! It has such an inviting atmosphere with a warm fire pit outside. We made a reservation and I indicated we were celebrating her birthday and there was a birthday card on the table waiting for us. We tried the 4 course tasting menu. We both shocked at the portion size. We got way more than we anticipated. The first two courses felt like they were full size and they said the pasta is a half size. Our favorite items were the roasted beet salad and the desserts. She had a chocolate torte and I had a apple crisp. The service was wonderful! Our server took the time to explain many menu items in advance. We already planned out our menu for the next visit and can't wait to go back! Great food and great service! Also I have had the multiple course type dinners that don't fill me up and this one was the perfect amount!

I've been wanting to try Acero for a long time and I'm so glad to finally get here. I was not impressed. Not for a $300 evening. I had the egg raviolio per my daughters request. Blech ! Don't know what the fanfare is over. Over priced food. Very nice small Italian restaurant with white tablecloths where everything is made in house and service is superb. We started with cocktails and the mozzarella and heirloom tomato appetizer. It was the best appetizer of it's type I have had. The tomatoes were very fresh and tasty and the mozzarella was so flavorful and creamy. We also split a mixed green salad and the pesto pasta with bacon. You can tell they make it in house! Amazing. Would order exactly the same. We finished with the goat cheese dessert which was like an Italian creme brûlée. So pleased and the best dining experience I have had in a while. read more

I don't usually like spending enough money to pay for a tasting menu type place so Acero's 4 course tasting menu for $40 was a dream come true for me. Truly high quality food and experience! I started with what was described to me as a savory beignet with prosciutto and it did not disappoint! Then I had the mushroom taglioni. I don't like mushrooms usually but these were so well cooked and had an amazing hearty flavor. Next I had the steak cooked to a good medium/medium rare with mashed potatoes, asparagus, and a really good steak sauce. I finished it up with an apple tart that was so good I couldn't get a picture in time. The tart is only $8 a la carte so I plan on coming back for that alone! Amazing service with very educated and friendly staff. read more

Enjoyed a dinner at Acero last night in the thriving neighborhood of Maplewood. Our group was actually a corporate gathering of a couple dozen and we dined in a dedicated room behind the bar for such groups. Service through the evening was great, from the pre dinner drinks from our bartender to the service through dinner. Our menu included 3 or 4 choices from each course. I thought the crudo as an appetizer was wonderful, and I stuck with the recommended ravioli for the second course prepared perfectly with soft yolk inside the pasta providing a sauce. Lastly the lamb chops were very thick and meaty and three big chops. Around the table others enjoyed salmon, chicken as well as a pasta with rags. It is so nice to support a St. Louis restaurant and get out of the Clayton scene for a change. I haven't dined solo at this spot for years but I'll make a point to do so, everything was consistently good out of the kitchen. read more

Great staff. Cute corner restaurant that is very romantic with a little outdoor space. Loved our experience.

I have had Acero bookmarked for over a year and was sooo excited to finally get a chance to eat here last night. The parking is ughhhhhh. You have to find a spot somewhere on the street and walk to your destination. They sit on the corner right before Schlafly's at the end of their parkign lot. The restaurant is on the small side, upscale with that casual vibe. The ambiance and decor could be construde in many ways, from date night, girls night, quiet dinner alone to casual drop in. It is trully nice As soon as we walked in the hostess immediately greeted us because she had to assist us with the door coming in. She was super friendly and welcoming. She continuously thanked us for stopping in. We had our choice to either sit at a table or the bar. We opted for a table, which I see now was a mistake. We should have opted for the bar. The bartender, Anthony I think was his name, you could tell he knew how to take care of his customers. He was engaging with them, explained the menus (food & cocktails) and was just all around well rounded in which I expect my server to be. Our server was Marco, whom was beyond disappointing which really added to my displeasure, not to mention continuosly MIA. The hostess assured us that either way, sitting at a table or the bar, we would be well taken care of, that apparently wasn't the case. As this being our first visit as with anyone dining somewhere for the 1st time. The server should be able to guide you through each of the menus, the server should also know each of the menus, the server should be able to answer questions and explain and the server should be able to suggest options and if not ASK!!! I could see if he was new or the restaurant was busy, but neither was the case. If it wasn't for his fellow employees (the hostess, the busser and another waiter) picking up his slack our experience would have been even worse. We chose to try their tasting menu in which I would highly recommend to anyone trying this place for the 1st time. The tasting menu is $35 for 4 courses with some choices having an additional upcharge. It truly gives you a very good taste of their menu at a reasonable price. Also, the tasting menu provides the perfect portion sizes for each serving, so you will not walk away feeling hungry. We began with salads (the Bibb Salad & Insalata Mista) which were delicious. I favor the Insalata Mista over the Bibb. It provides are more complex, flavorful salad experience. Our second courses were bruschetta, gnocco fritto and the tagliatelle. The bruschetta I would opt out of because they provide you with bread for the table, which is very good and beyond suffient. The bruschetta was simply a large piece of garlic cheese bread, add onions and blue chees. It was different. The gnocco fritto was interesting, to describe it basically, it's beignets with Prosciutto di Parma, olive oil and sea salt. The tagliatelle was a hearty ragu over pasta that was served warm. The pasta was cooked perfectly and the meaty sauce was good, for an extra touch added olive oil on top, that sits on the table to take it over the top. For the third couse we had the grass fed ribeye and the scallops. The scallops weren't completely cleaned because I was crunching on something but besides that they were tasty accompanied by the sauteed mushrooms, served warm. The puree was flavorless and left on the plate. The ribeye plate was good with the potatoes and brussel sprouts even though it was served to us warm. And to finish out the dinner we ended with the warm chocolate torte, which was literally a semi-sweet brownie split open with ice cream in the middle, served room temp. I had to remove the ice cream which was another disappointment. I have entirely mixed feelings from the whole experience. It was not busy last night in the restaurant. It was not even semi busy. I should not have had to ask multiple times for simple things from our waiter. We should not have had to continuously rely on other staff to assist us because he was MIA. All I can say is that I left out upset and highly disappointed. And what's confusing is plates being brought out with gloves as if they are hot and they're not, let alone the wait times for food to come out to the table. I noticed this was a similar pattern throughout the other tables as well. read more

A late birthday meal for my son the Famous Chip K. His birthday his choice. I never heard of this place and when I looked the menu I was thinking oh boy nothing for Mrs. K. to eat. For starters we ordered their cheese and salami plate. There were three cheeses I never had before nor heard of it. But buffalo milk seemed to be the common ingredient. The salami's where, salami, mortadella, buffalo salami, and wild boar salami. I next ordered a salad. It was their house salad and it included nuts. I asked if they could accommodate me by leaving them off and they did. It was a fine Balsamic vinegar salad. For my main course I ordered the Tagliolini. A wonderful pasta served in a cream sauce with mushrooms. They were some special mushrooms as they seemed to be from the same family of morels. I really liked the earthy flavor they brought to the plate. Oh and Mrs. K. was able to order a steak and have them hold everything but the steak and they did it. Very accommodating place. If you come here think Pastaria with more options. read more

The service was a real bummer on this visit. We have been here previously several times and the service has always been the star of the show. Today, it was disinterested, disjointed, and basically a bummer. Our server didn't seem to care much or seem that on top of his game, which kind of put a damper on a special evening. I worry because based on recent reviews, this seems like a trend. We did the four course tasting menu and shared everything, which is a nice chance to sample a lot of dishes. We started with the gnocco fritto and the crudo. The crudo was yellow tail and was delicious. The gnocco fritto or "meat donuts" were good but when you wrap puff pastry in prosciutto, how can you be upset? For pasta, we had the egg raviolo, which has also been better on previous occasions. However, this depends wildly on the sauce because it changes nightly. It was a tomato and black garlic sauce tonight and it just wasn't that unique. The mushroom taglioni was delicious, though. For entrees, we had the steak and the scallops. The steak was a good steak, but not great - the Brussels sprouts were average as were the potatoes. The scallops were pretty good, but not all that special. The waiter was not familiar with our wine selection, which was sort of disconcerting. Being told "yeah, I think that white is dry" with no offer to check or bring a taste is subpar service. For dessert, the chocolate olive oil tort was much better than the lemon cheesecake. The fig on top of the cheesecake was a little too sugary. Additionally, there was dried gum stuck to the bottom of my table. Extremely gross and just frankly, weird for a restaurant of this caliber and price point. Acero, you used to be our favorite special occasion restaurant and now, I'm just not sure. read more

Amazing authentic northern Italian in STL. Probably my top fave in town. The pasta is made fresh. Nuff said.

Great experience! I had been having the most horrible experiences at these 4 star type places lately, but Acero has restored my faith in "fine-dining". We got the prix-fixe menu, it was amazing. Also, our server was a sweetie, and answered all of my beginner-foodie questions. Every single course was incredible. The bruschetta had raw honey, grilled onions and bleu cheese. It was a lovely combination. Sweet and pungent, and the brushetta added a perfect crunch. I ordered a medium rare tuna, which had greens, red sauce, capers and green olives. AMAZING. I can't remember the last time I had tuna not from a can, so of course I though the tuna was amazing! The acidity and salt of the capers and green olives, and the red sauce combined perfectly. Imagine the most fresh fish you've ever had: delicious. Great atmosphere, great food, great location - can't wait to go back. read more

Love. What else can be said? I'm reclining on my couch. I've consumed 5,000 calories in the past three hours with zero regrets. A four course tasting menu for $35? I just can't.
