We visited tonight for our anniversary. Fantastic food and service! We both chose the 4 course tasting menu. Our choices were the roasted beet salad, gnocco fritto, tagliatelle, seafood squid ink pasta, chicken Milanese, ribeye, cheesecake, and panna cotta. All really good. Seasoned well and full of flavor. read more

Like so many others have said: Acero has lovely service, wonderful food, and you should try the tasting menu (which blessedly has no restrictions - get one of any starter, pasta, entree, dessert) What follows is what our group ordered, but I suspect you can't go wrong here. I highly recommend Acero, and it will be hard not to come here every time we're in town! Starters: I got the burrata and tomato salad and also sampled my husband's melon salad. Both excellent. Top notch ingredients and beautifully simple. My mom didn't want to share any bites of her beets and said it was delicious and the beets themselves were very good. My dad was very happy with the gnocco fritto (not gnocchi! They're little pastry with prosciutto on top. Interesting!) Pasta: My mom and I both got the taglioline, which was so simple and perfect. The pasta was phenomenal, and the mushrooms were perfect. My husband got the gnocchi + rabbit special, which was unique and delicious. My dad got the egg raviolo, and I've never seen him so impressed with a dish Entree: My mom and I both got the monkfish, which is so delicate. The lemon sauce had the perfect amount of brightness, and I could eat a mountain of the potatoes. My husband got the lamb, which was prepared in a really interesting way: braised, shredded, formed into a round and grilled. He loved it. My dad got the pheasant and raved about how moist it was so moist. My mom grabbed a bite and said the gravy was phenomenal. Dessert: the ladies got the apple cake with cinnamon gelato. The cake was the only thing of the evening that didn't wow - it was a bit dry and dense. But it was surrounded by some of the best caramel I've ever had, and the gelato was perfect. Cinnamon could easily overwhelm but didn't at all. The guys got the cheesecake; I tried a bite and it was like none I've ever had. The cheesecake itself is incredibly light, and the cherries on it turned me into a cherry person on the spot. read more

Dynamite, seasonal and reasonably priced tasting menu in a cozy little joint. Parking is easy.

Why has it taken me so long to visit Acero?! Everything - and I do mean everything - was on point. We arrived early and sat at the bar for a pre-dinner cocktail. The bartender (can't believe I didn't catch his name) was attentive, gave some great recommendations, and treated us as if he had known us all his life. We chatted with him enough to ask him for a wine recommendation with dinner, which he gladly obliged. He recommended an excellent Brunello for an outstanding price (we checked later). No attempt to upsell us - just a great wine for a great price. This was just the beginning of the outstanding service. Our server, Zurn, was attentive but not hovering, told us the table was ours for the night so not to rush, gave amazing input on the menu (very honest), and was funny, charming, and (again) treated us if we were regulars. In addition to Zurn, another server and the busser regularly checked on us, took orders when we were ready, and made sure we were having a good time. I have never seen such a great team of service staff who respected each other and worked so well together. If this weren't enough, the food was fabulous! The crudo was fresh, cold, and expertly dressed. Hubby's lamb neck was fork-tender, and my papparadelle bolognese was perfect. One of our best experiences in the Lou, but also one of our best ever. read more

Acero - Italian Near Me - Maplewood, Missouri

This is one of the top dinner spots in STL. It delivers consistently high quality menu items along with an expansive wine selection. Mixed drinks like the Old Fashion are top drawer as well. Tried out Acero last night to celebrate my mom's birthday with a small group of her friends. It's an assuming corner location in Maplewood, next to Schlafly. Nicely decorated inside without being over the top or too faux-italianate. I waffled a bit on going a la carte or with the 4 course tasting option, but after our server explained that the portions were smaller on the tasting menu, I decided I couldn't pass up the opportunity for the 4 course. The first standout for me was the zero proof elderberry spritz - it tasted like a delicious wine spritzer, but no alcohol, which this pregnant mama really appreciated. Everyone in our party of six ordered different options and passed around bites to taste, so I can honestly say everything was fantastic. I started off with the Gnocci Fritto, which was a perfect little fluffy pillow of dough dressed up with salted prosciutto. A lovely starter, and so nice of the staff to box up any extras after each course for you to take home. Second up was the pasta course - I had the taglioni, a thin pasta with wild mushrooms cut into chunks and slices that you could easily identify and appreciate the taste and texture, with a beautiful mushroom sauce and shallots. I inhaled this course, forgetting that it would be a great lunch. It was the highlight of dinner. By the time the third course rolled around, I was pretty full. But I thoroughly enjoyed the Chicken entree, nice and thin with a cheesy breading on a bed of yukon potatoes and broccolini. It leaned a bit toward the salty side, but otherwise was excellent. Once again, the staff immediately whisked away my half empty plate and boxed up the chicken to go. I finished up the meal with a basil coulis topped with sliced strawberries. It was a dense panna cotta style custard covered with a savory basil sauce and fresh strawberries. Excellent! I'd like to send another 5+ stars on top of the food and general table service to our server Zurn, who helped accommodate the needs of a table of six 80+ year old ladies. They aren't the easiest group to handle, and he did so with humor and charm. A couple of split checks on top of us all having separate checks can be a challenge, and he handled it so well. read more

Got a last minute reservation here for us and friends on a Friday night. We all opted for the tasting menu since it was our first time here which is a 4 course menu for $58+ (if you decided to get some options that have an extra cost). I appreciated them being up front about all the cost, such as adding on $x if you ordered something specific for a course. Most options on the tasting menu didn't have an added cost. I got the soup of the day which was a bell pepper and tomato soup which was great and perfect for the cold weather. My husband got the prosciutto and my friend got the tartare which were great as well. For the 2nd course we all tried different pastas. My husband got the egg ravioli which is unique and a must try. It is a giant ravioli which has a runny egg inside when you cut into it. I got the tagliolini which was great, flavorful, and light. For my entree I got the halibut which I recommend and my husband got the lamb which he loved. Both are worth the added cost. The desserts were all amazing- we tried the Panna cotta, cheesecake and torte and while you can't go wrong our waiter said the Panna cotta was the best and he wasn't wrong. Highly recommend the Panna cotta. Overall the tasting menu is worth it for your first time. For my next visit I will probably opt to order a la carte read more

This is a two-visit review. The first visit was AMAZING. Seriously, it was the best restaurant food we'd had in ages. We swore we'd come back many times. The second visit was for two birthdays, which they knew via the reservation. The primary reason for the 4 stars over 5 is the lack of "qualifiers" on the menu. We picked this restaurant for our birthdays because we wanted to experience the 7-course, chef-pick menu, which is one of our favorite ways to dine. Upon being seated, we immediately let the server know that we wanted the 7-course tasting menu. The server, the same one we had on our first visit, immediately stated that we couldn't have it because it is only offered after 7pm on the weekends. He then told us that he needed to turn the table over more quickly than the 7-course dinner would allow. 1) The menu doesn't state any restrictions on timing for the 7-course menu in any way, 2) The server has no business telling us that he needs to scoot us out the door quicker than the 7-course would allow. The server asked if we would be allowed the 7-course. The chef agreed. We had several wonderful dishes for the dinner (8 courses, not 7). Our favorites were the off-the-menu pieces, especially the tuna. The unknown of the dinner, simply being left in the hands of the chef, is one of the best ways to dine. If you haven't tied it, do - it's a great adventure at any restaurant. We were out the door in less than 2 hours, the time allowed for the regular dinner. read more

Food is lovely, service is lovely, everything is lovely all around, but you will pay for it. I would recommend one of the tasting menus in terms of both variety and cost value. Decently-sized wine list comprising mostly Italian wines. Mostly bottles plus one section dedicated to quartinos (1/3 bottle pours) and a handful of 4 oz pours for some of the more expensive popular wines. I went on a Monday night a bit before 8pm, with a reservation, and everything was prompt. Restaurant was about two thirds full, no line. Can definitely imagine it getting packed on the weekends though, so making a nowait reservation is probably well worth the effort read more

Beginning with saying that this gem of a restaurant was absolutely fantastic would be an understatement and not do the quality of service and food justice. Everything our party of six enjoyed was exceptional. Jesse (our server) was dynamic. His recommendations for each course was on point. I was uniquely impressed by his ability to listen to my young son and determine exactly what he would enjoy was great. The five adults participated in the four course tasting menu, which was incredibly delectable. The vibe of the establishment was warm and welcoming. We will definitely return. Our compliments to this amazing team and outstanding kitchen staff. This place definitely gets it! read more

I'm still thinking about the wonderful experience I had last night at Acero. Before I even mention the food I want to comment on how abundantly friendly and helpful the entire staff was from start to finish. Even with the extra stress they have to endure trying to stay safe and wearing masks everyone was wonderful, and went out of their way to engage in conversation and make us feel welcome and appreciated. The front patio is beautiful but we opted to sit inside. They have plexiglass dividers between the tables which is a nice touch. There are 2 ways to dine here. You can order off the menu like normal but they also offer a 4 course option for $40. Of course we went big and did the 4 course! You select one item from each category: salad/starters, pasta, entrees, dessert. Some items come with a surcharge - all clearly noted on the menu, so no surprises. Smaller portion sizes for this menu ...so they say. I couldn't come close to finishing everything, which is disappointing since it's all so fabulous. I had the beet salad with feta - perfect, tagliatelle with bolognese- FRESH as can be and something I'll dream about, scallops with pistachios and bok choy - incredible, and chocolate torte - more like a warm brownie a'la mode and I'm not complaining. I love trying new things but when I come back I'll be tempted to order this exact same menu. There's a reason this restaurant has endured for so many years. They have the system down, consistantly put out a great product and are constantly looking to improve. read more

There are lots of good choices in STL for Italian-American food, however now that Il Fratelini is closed, this is perhaps one of the most authentic Italian places you can go to. The food is uniformly great-our recent meal here was terrific top to bottom, nothing seems over seasoned and the pasta is cooked just right. My advice is to go for the tasting menu of 4 dishes and you will not go home hungry. Service to very professional and terrific as well. read more

I've not been to Acero for many years but went last night with a friend and our daughters. Everything was amazing. The service was incredible and the food was excellent. We all did the 4 course menu with various selections. One of my favorite parts of this dinner was the progression of courses and how there was ample time between each one. We did not feel rushed at all and because it was timed so well, we were able to really enjoy each course. Sometimes when I do a tasting menu the food comes out so quickly that I get full too quickly and can't enjoy some of the later courses as much. This was not the case. We spent a full 3 hours dining which was perfect for this meal. For starters our table ordered the mixed green salad, the roasted beet salad and the Gnocco Fritto. I did not try the mixed green salads but both that ordered it said it was great and finished every bite. I had the roasted beet salad which was perfect. Just the right amount of each ingredient and dressed perfectly. One person ordered the Gnocco Fritto (think light fluffy dough with a thin slice of prosciutto on top). One word- wow! It was so simple but so full of flavor. I would definitely order that next time and if you have 2 or more people make sure at least one person gets it so everyone can try it. For the pasta course, we ordered the Raviolo, the Spaghetti Chitarra and the Ravioli. I had a friend recommend the Raviolo and it did not disappoint. Amazing. I don't even know how to describe it but it was one of the best dishes I have ever had. It was creamy and rich and so full of flavor. I did not try the Spaghetti but the noodles looked really good (nice and thick) and my friend enjoyed it. The ravioli was also good but not my favorite of the night. But both people who ordered it finished every last bite. For the entree we ordered the chicken, the halibut and the branzino. The branzino was out of this world. Hands down the best branzino I have ever had. I am used to branzino coming out with the whole fish but this was a filet with super crispy skin. I wish most places would do it this way. I don't even remember the accompanying veggies as the fish was the clear star on the plate. I also tried some of the halibut and it was tasty too. Tons of flavor but also light. The sauces for both were not overpowering and really complimented the fish rather than outshine it. For dessert most of the table ordered the chocolate torte while I had the cheesecake. At that point I was getting very full but the cheesecake was excellent. I did not try the torte myself but my dining companions seemed to really enjoy them. Overall this was an excellent night and I can't wait to go again. I am trying to remember if they had a bar to sit at because just going and having some wine, the Gnocco Fritto and Raviolo would be a great night as well. I look forward to finding out soon! read more

I'm shocked to say this was a disappointing experience as I used to love Acero. This was my third time at Acero. I loved their food so much that I was looking forward to coming back since weeks ago when I booked a reservation with my friends. I was especially in love with the lamb rack that they serve - but this time the lamb left the worst impression on me. The lamb this time was breaded, sliced up and was flavorless and mushy. I understand that sometimes there can be slight changes in the way they cook entrees but this was not worth my money personally. Originally they used to give a lamb rack that was juicy and full of flavor and the bone was attached! This one included in the photo was rather dry and bland, and the vegetables served under didn't go well with it either. I couldn't finish the dish and was really sad about it since I was looking forward to it the most. All of the other courses like the tagliatelle, crudo (was a bit fishy but wasn't the biggest deal compared to the lamb), and the dessert were great. but the lamb really disappointed me and I can't stop thinking about how I felt like I wasted my money and experience just because of the lamb which is the main entree. Service was great and our waitor was very nice, but I'm sad to say I won't be returning unless the lamb rack returns to what it used to be. I'm including photos of the lamb i had for my recent visit and a photo of what it used to be. read more

Went for the first time with friends who go often. Did the tasting menu. Absolutely amazing! The service, the cocktails, the food were fantastic. Get the ravioli...its huge. Excellent food, service, and ambiance. Highly recommend the 4 course tasting menu -- cannot go wrong with any dish.

Acero is an oldie, but a goodie and for great reason! Honestly, I have wanted to try it for years but had never made it for some unknown reason. We got reservations on a whim one Tuesday and boy are we glad we did! We did the 4-course tasting menu and we honestly loved every dish. I started with the beet salad with feta cheese and it knocked my socks off. I also got the mushroom tagliatelle, Corvina, and the goat cheese panna cotta. Every course was perfect, especially the fish and panna cotta. My boyfriend started with the gnocco fritto and then got the famous egg raviolo which was rich, yet fluffy. Then, he had the pork chop and finished with the cheesecake. My faves all around were the beet salad, egg raviolo, pork chop, and pana cotta. Everything was very well seasoned and the service was great! It was quite busy for a Tuesday evening. We were also stuffed to the brim since you get quite a bit of food even though they are supposedly half servings. You shouldn't leave hungry! read more

We've been coming to Acero for 2 1/2 years and have consistently enjoyed it every time. The salads, pasta, charcuterie and cheese, drinks, everything, have been amazing. But the turn the restaurant has taken since GM Adam has left have been troubling. A little more than a month ago, Acero started upcharging for close to half the menu (7/17) items. I suggested increasing the price of the 4-course tasting menu and amortize the price increases across the board. That was met upon deaf ears. Then last night, on our tasting menu, we found that the portion sizes for the salads and pasta were cut in half (or perhaps more) from their usual size. When brought up to the chef, the message that was relayed back to us was, "he was sorry you noticed." While the food was still delicious, Acero is a treat for us and it was jarring to see such small portions compared to the usual. I don't think paying $58 for a tasting menu should result in two forkfuls of pasta or a child size portion of salad. If food costs are increasing, please increase the cost of the tasting menu commensurately. Please don't include markups on essentially half of the menu. Please don't decrease portion size so drastically, especially without warning. It makes Acero feel cheap. read more

My husband & I did had dinner at the bar at Acero and had SUCH a great experience! The food & wine were perfect, and the bartender David is the absolute best! The bar is the best seat in the house at Acero because of David. Everything on the menu sounded amazing, so we did the four course tasting menu: an app, a pasta, an entree and a dessert. For the quality of food, portion size & service, this is such a good value. My husband added the wine pairing and loved each one that David picked, while I enjoyed a delish peachy mocktail. For apps, we did the gnocco fritto & the smoked salmon crostini. Both were fantastic! The crostini is definitely the lighter option, but it is so packed with flavor. The gnocco is more like a fluffy beignet with prosciutto layered on top. It's rich and so dang good! For pastas, we had the egg raviolo and the mushroom tagliolini. The egg raviolo is their signature dish, and for good reason. It's rich, perfectly cooked and sits in a rich carbonara like sauce. My husband was obsessed. If you like earthy flavors like me, the tagliolini is for you. I am such a pasta snob and I would order a dinner sized portion of this in a heartbeat! For entrees, we did the swordfish special and the lamb. Again, both were perfectly cooked and the flavors were spot on. My husband swears it's the best lamb he's had in St. Louis. And dessert, the chocolate torte and cheesecake. They were both the perfect ending to a fantastic meal. We are such fans, and we can't wait to bring friends & family to share the delicious joy that is Acero! read more

Today was the first time coming to Acero with the family. We went for dinner to celebrate my birthday. we ordered plenty of food starting with some appetizers. The Gnocci was fantastic. Entrees we ordered: - Torchio - Egg Raviolo - Vongole Pasta They were great but the noodles were overcooked and a bit salty. Torchio was great; ate the whole thing. Egg Raviolo was good but oily and greasy. The Vongole was good but downside noodles were too overcooked. As a dessert my family tried the Assorted Gelato. read more

The complimentary bread takes little bit to come out but it's smooth sailing after. Our server explained each dish in detail almost painting a picture! I got the meat donut( airy but salty), egg raviolo( just perfect), scallops( utterly butterly delicious) followed by ricotta cheesecake- portions are smaller in the tasting menu but I was so stuffed by the end of it. Other dishes on the table were bruschetta, crudo, mushroom pasta, lamb and Porcetta which was the weakest dish of the day. We really like Acero. The food is terrific and last weekend we had a very good waiter, Keith, who tried exceptionally hard despite difficult circumstances. , We were trying to celebrate an early Valentine's Day and were seated in a quiet spot in back. After our first course, two young men came in and were seated directly next to us. They proceeded to play a conference call on speaker on full volume right next to us for most of the remainder of our meal--probably 45 minutes. Keith did what he could to get them to stop, but he had limited power. Knowing that our dining experience was compromised, I would have expected management to acknowledge it in some way, but they didn't. I reached out very nicely the next day and submitted a form on their website and never received a response. I followed up with an email several days later, and still nothing. For a restaurant of this caliber, I expected a reply. We are disappointed. read more

After a day of running endless errands, I was beat and had no energy to cook when I got home. Since I was in Maplewood and a prime parking space was near Acero, my problem was solved. It also provided me with an opportunity to try the Egg Raviolo that Ian said was the "must order" on his STL 100. It was a busy night and all the tables were filled and couples were waiting at the bar for an opening table. I asked the hostess if it were possible to be seated and served at the bar and she said absolutely. The bartender was knowledgeable on both the drink and special food offerings. I'm confident my service at the bar, dining alone was the exact same as if I were at a table. It was attentive and professional. I've enjoyed an Acero Manhattan before and was tempted to have another, but I changed my mind after the bartender told me about the Black Manhattan. It's made with Bone Snapper Rye, Averna Amaro, Angostura Bitters and Amerena Cherry. I usually enjoy my Manhattan's up, but he encouraged me to have this one on the rocks. Telling me, their ice was a large cube that would melt slowly and keep the drink chilled as I enjoyed it. He was oh, so right. I listened to the nightly specials, but kept my focus on the Egg Raviolo. I can always be swayed away by sea scallops, but I'll come back and enjoy them within a Four Course Tasting Menu. The Egg Raviolo was a Three Cheese. I paired it with a side of Brussel Sprouts, so I'd have my green vegetable of the day. The Egg Raviolo was absolute perfection. At first, I cut off a small bite from the outer edge. The blend of the three cheeses melted in my mouth. When I went to slice off my second bite, I couldn't resist. I had to cut it down the center so I could see the yolk run free. It was absolute perfection. I am so glad that I had not nibbled on the fresh bread that the bartender had placed in front of me. I ended up using it to wipe my bowl clean of the delicious cheese sauce and runny egg yolk. My Brussels Sprouts were roasted with pancetta & pecorino. I'm still in amazement that as a child I hated brussels sprouts, but now as an adult they are one of my favorite vegetables. As I was dining, I would eat some pasta and then some of the sprouts. Towards the end, I was struggling with which one did I want to enjoy as my last bite. To have that last lingering flavor in my mouth until I returned home and brushed my teeth. I lost control, devouring all the food, so my last bite ended up being a sip of my Black Manhattan. I'm going back for the Tasting Menu - hope they let me do it at the bar as many times I am a single diner. When: March 30, 2016 Why: Dinner - read more
