Repeatedly messed up clothing, takes too long, I've had to take everything back after trying it on

I've tried Ace Tailors many times so this review is not based on just one experience. They are conveniently located near me so I really want to be happy with their service. But, frankly, I consistently have bad experiences with them. I frequently find that their tailoring is not to how we had agreed when they were "pinning" my clothes for alteration. And they are not agreeable about fixing things that are not to your liking after. Second, their people are not friendly in the slightest. They give off an air that they are doing you a favor rather than that they are providing a service that you are paying for. When taking measurements, you'll hear them say things like, "face the mirror" or "stand straight" without a please or a thank you. On my last visit, they said that they would call when my pants were done. That never happened. The pants were wrong but they just cut me off and said that they did them correctly. The pants were horribly wrinkled. So I asked them to press them. They looked put out. Then the pressed part of them but not the legs where there were creases. Thanks for ruining my $1200 bridesmaids dress. It's one thing to over charge for something simple if it's done correctly and on time. My dress when handed back to me 2 days after it was promised (which was 7 days)..the interior bra was 80% detached, the zipper was haphazardly "repaired" and the person that made the repairs ripped a large hole in the tulle. I asked the people at the front before I even changed if the repairs to the bodice could be done and was reassured that they could be. Honestly, if you know your team can't deliver it's best to admit it! If you're lane is hemming jeans please state it...don't ruin people's clothing because the designated seamstress wants to see what they "make" might be able to do. read more

Astoundingly talented tailoring! I needed alterations on a very expensive designer dress with beading and sequins. The workmanship was so exquisite, the seam so perfectly done, I had to put it on to see if they had actually done anything. The dress fit to perfection!!!! Thrilled!!! read more

I was looking for a tux measurement and ready to pay for the service. I called the establishment the day before and talked to the manager. The manager told me to come at any time the next day because measurements were a complimentary service, I was surprised that it was complimentary and told the manager that I'd be tipping for sure because how I am. I get to the Ace Tailors, and ask for the complimentary tux measurement that I was told I would receive. Upon arrival the staff pretty much told me to fuck off when they for sure do measurements (it takes 3 damn minutes to do a measurement, I couldn't believe these people). I told them I'd tip heavily because I'm a nice guy. They reluctantly did my measurements (it took no more than five minutes). They were huffing and puffing the whole time, I've never met such rude lazy people. I ended up giving them a $16 tip!!! WTF!!! For 3mins of their time while they treated me like shit. If I could go back in time I'd walk out the door and go to a real tailors that's respects their customers. They thought since the manager wasn't there that they could treat customers like shit. I want my money back, but they can keep it. DONT GO HERE! DONT LET THE CUTE LIL LOGO AND DESIGN FOOL YOU! The workers are rude, and will take ur money, and not live up to what they're supposed to do. Ace Tailors is a godsend! I realized my bridesmaid dress was too small a week before the wedding. The team at Ace Tailors worked wonders and now my dress fits beautifully and you can't even tell they added fabric. Incredible work by an incredible group of people in a short amount of time! I would recommend staying away from this place. With a petite/non standard frame for clothing designers, I often need alterations. Waiting in line for your turn, you are treated like cattle. When you finally reach the desk to check out, not a word, they talk to each other in Spanish and don't even acknowledge your existence - that is until you can answer a question one is asking the other that the other can't answer - and then looks of surprise when you chime in to their chat - but still not a single word acknowledgement. Prices are not disclosed unless asked directly several times as they ring you up. Prices that are exorbitantly high. I even declined various alterations when they were double and triple the cost of the blouse. They also don't offer any guidance or expertise. My tailor on LA was a fraction of the price and would clearly advise on the proper length for style and/or fit. You will not get an ounce of help here just 'tell me what you want' even when advice is requested. I will definitely not return. read more

I've used the location at Walsh Tarlton a few times and I've been very pleased. It has taken a little longer than I thought, on occasion, and I admit it seems a tad pricey, but it could just be that I hate spending money so their price system may be right on par. Overall the quality of work has been great and they've definitely gone above and beyond to make sure everything is done right. I recommend them and I'm sure I'll be back. read more

Expensive. Horribly expensive. If you like spending $60 to take in the sides of your shirts and get charged for shortening the sleeves which you never asked for, then this is your place. If you are trying to get a shirt taken in for a trip up north to a friend's wedding, make sure to take it in 60 days before, or else they won't have it done. Now, if you don't want the above, take your business elsewhere. There's nothing special about the quality of work here, and something terrible about the customer service, so you're better off going anywhere else. read more

Expensive does not even begin to describe this place. I was quoted $60 to hem pants leg and take in one half inch in waist of a pair of pants. There was nothing complicated about it. Took to another place nearby and was told they would do the whole thing for $27. Just because you can afford to bring your clothes here does not mean you should. read more

I consider myself pretty handy-- but as it turns out, cruddy hems on my dress pants are outside of my skillset for repairs! So I finally found the time to get down to the tailor-- and I was bowled over by the efficiency and great customer service! I've had five or six pairs of pants altered here, and it's always been a fuss-free experience. Prices aren't cheap - 12 bucks for a simple hem on jeans - but good luck finding cheaper without buying your own sewing machine. The ladies here are businesslike but polite. You'll probably wait a week for a simple alteration, more for a complex one. I had one pair of dress pants hemmed and didn't like the result, but when I brought them back, they re-did them for free and I had them back in 4 days. I'd suggest going in the morning, since a line tends to build up after 4 or so. read more

I started working in Austin and wanted to find a convenient place to get alterations done. I normally debate whether I should just try and sew things myself, but I needed an expensive dress hemmed so I didn't want to mess it up. It was a week before needing this dress done, so I go in thinking I'll be fine. As most have noted, one of the main ladies who works the front is very rude. My experience was no different. I told her I needed it by Friday, and she told me Friday at 5 (I needed to be wearing it at 5). She said 4:30 was the earliest I could get it. LOL. I had been waiting for her to help me for like 30 minutes so I just said fine and left. The next day I had doubts and went back to the store and told them I just wanted it back and I would do it myself. The same lady was now acting much nicer and said they could have it done Friday morning, so then I decided to leave it. It was in fact ready by then, but I was pretty shocked to see it was $60 for just hemming a dress, since it was a "wide hem". This sewing job probably took 10 minutes. I don't think I could afford bringing something here that needed more than one line of sewing. Definitely not coming back, I will instead find a more mom-and-pop alterations place that are friendlier and won't rip me off. read more

I've been coming here for years. It's a good thing that they do really good work and that I trust them with all of my clothes, because I can't remember the last time I came in here and WASN'T irritated by some aspect of the "customer service." It's always something, it seems. Friday, I picked up a pair of shorts that they had re-hemmed for me. After running my credit card, I signed the receipt and waited for the woman checking me out to hand me the pair of shorts. That's ALL she had to do at that point - just hand them to me across the counter and I could walk out. However, just one second before she handed them over, the phone behind her rang. So, what did she do? Did she simply hand my shorts over the counter so that I could peace out and get on with my day. Uh, no. She answered the phone and made me wait there for another 5ish minutes while she helped the customer on the phone. OK, not the biggest deal, I know, but it was still an inconvenience and irritating enough to inspire me to write this review. Normally I would just chalk something like this up to a slip of mind by the woman waiting on me, except it seems like little crud like that happens EVERYTIME I go in there. Like I said, it's a good thing that they do great work or else these sort of ticky-tack little incidents would probably have aggregated to the point where I would have found another tailor by now. read more

I love Ace, I do. In my opinion, if you need something tailored, Ace is THE place to go. But if you have the option, try to avoid this location. The people are not very friendly, and some of them are just plain awful. They consisently refuse to do rush jobs, which is just unacceptable to me. Basically, you should go to the Far West location instead. They're simply amazing people who do amazing work -- not to mention they have never, ever, not once even THOUGHT about refusing a rush job. And because of this, they've saved me in more than one instance. And if you must go to this location, you needn't worry -- they still do great tailoring work, even if they act like your business is a MAJOR inconvenience. read more

These guys completely ruined a shirt I brought in to be sized down a bit. They took WAY too much off of the length and left it all in the width of the sleeves somehow, resulting in a highwatering, wizard-sleeved mess. I was particularly stung by this as the shirt was about as close to an heirloom as it gets in my family: an embroidered Levi's shirt my grandmother made for my dad in the 60's. Now I find myself wishing one day for short, stocky-armed offspring or the friendship of a suitably sized primate so that someone can still enjoy it. Oh, and they're expensive. I'm used to getting pants hemmed for $3, $6 for the original hem. Surely someone can get close to that around here!? read more

Are these guys seriously the only tailor (or chain of tailors) in town? They might be great at what they do, but I was seriously put off by the surly attitudes and zero lack of initiative while I stood there waiting for 10 minutes without any acknowledgment that I was there or would be helped shortly. I finally just left and decided to take my business elsewhere. I'm not that impatient of a person, but even I have my limits. Maybe I caught this place on a good day because my experience was unlike all the negative ones... I went to Ace on a recommendation and took the risk despite reading all the reviews telling me to find another place. I was short on time and beyond furious at the hack job that Marifel's did to several hundred dollars worth of clothes the last time I needed alterations. I walked into the shop on a Saturday and yes, there were a few other customers but service was orderly and fast. Normally, I keep the original hems on my jeans but they were simple and plain enough that the woman working actually suggested that I *shouldn't* spend the money to keep the originals attached. (On the third pair of jeans she was nice enough to tell me that they didn't need hemming because they were already the perfect length. What company turns business down?!) When I went back to pick up my jeans, there was a little confusion because I arrived for pick up earlier than the shop expected. They asked me to come back after 2pm - no big deal to me, but I can see how that might upset a customer. When I returned, my pants were awaiting me and were the perfect length and price. ($12/pair.) I, like others, want to like this place. It's in a decent location, there are a lot of people working there, and the hours are good. But they only do an OK job for a lot of money. I had jeans hemmed with the original hem kept on and a dress taken in at the shoulders for $78. They claimed there was reshaping done on the dress' shoulders, but I don't believe them. It doesn't look great. But what really gets me is this: I thought I had prepaid for the alterations, and I said so in a non-accusatory voice. The woman working the counter made a face as if I'd stolen something and said, "Uhhh NO." Wow lady: Honest mistake. What is wrong with people? Ace Tailors was recommended to me by a friend and I went them to alter my wedding dress. The ladies were very helpful and kind throughout the process. It did take me a couple of fittings to get everything right, but it ended up being perfect. They were responsive to my feedback and quickly made the changes I requested. This is understandable that multiple fittings are needed for some garments - especially a wedding dress. I found the price to be fair, and they were consultative as well as listened to my requests. I respect this in a service that they can provide their expertise and also provide advice. And, the dress turned out to be exactly as I imagined it - even though I had hesitation before taking it to them that they could get it to fit. It was no easy task as it was a complex design and they knocked it out of the park. Thank you! read more

The workers were very friendly but the service was absolutely terrible. I went in just to have some sleeves shortened on a suit jacket. I was told over the phone it would take 3 days. When I was there they said maybe 4 days or 5. I wasn't in too much of hurry so I said great and went on my way. When I got the suit, it looked fine however after one wear, the stitching inside the sleeves came apart. I will never take anything back here. read more

First off, I NEVER write bad reviews...but I wanted to save someone the trouble I had here. I went a week ago to get some jeans tailored as well as a bridesmaid dress. I walked in 45 min before they closed and the woman altering bridesmaid dresses was extremely rude. I was told to change into the dress and once I walked out she frantically told me she "did NOT have time for me!". I kindly told her that was fine and asked how long she needed to look at my dress so I knew when to come in the next day. Her only response was "I told you, I don't have time!" At that point I was furious. I left her my jeans and took my dress elsewhere. A week later I went in to pick up my jeans. Once I tried them on I asked if I could get them tailored a little more. The woman, again, was rude. My jeans scrunched to one side and I wanted to make sure it wouldn't happen after she fixed it and she said "that's just what happened when you tailor". I have the same exact jeans on, that I also got altered the same way and there is no scrunching. At this point she gave me attitude and told me I was wrong. I took my jeans elsewhere. Other people who work here are incredibly nice, but she rubbed me the wrong way both times. (I was hoping the first day was because of something else). read more

I respectfully disagree with Melissa sand Emily about the service. I've been going to Ace on 12th for for several years and I've always been very pleased. Josie is really sweet and will work with your schedule. I got a less than 24hr turnaround just the other day on several articles of clothing, including a blazer. Maybe the secret is going in at 7:30 AM??? Quality is awesome - no complaints there, but I do have to agree with Melissa and Emily that the prices are a little high. I give Ace 4 stars for being open early, being convenient to downtown, and doing high quality of work. read more

I took in my WEDDING DRESS after I called and was told that they have a master tailor that works on gowns that need a bit of work. Being a pretty relaxed person in general I figured "Hey, why would they bluff and say that they could do something if they can't." I verified that I could come in at any time and that I could get the initial fitting underway. So I went it the next day, yada yada everything seemed ok - except I was told that they wouldn't be able to help set up a bustle system or put cups in the dress. I also signed a contract that expels them of any responsibility if the dress is messed up and paid a deposit. I only made it to the second fitting. I understand that the second fitting is just another way to say "making progress to the final goal" but after seeing the dress I took it home. The lace was snagged in three noticeable places on the bodice of my gown. Also, there were two obvious seams that came up my torso (one on the right and one on the left) the right seam stopped on my rib cage and the left seam stopped around my belly button so that the dress hung crooked. Also the bust of the dress was two inches off of my skin. When I mentioned the concern that my chest would be visible I was told that they could take the dress in a little more "but not much because the boning would interfere." I took the dress off and talked to the woman who was helping me through the fittings about my concerns. I mentioned that I may take the dress to another tailor in Houston that I knew well, who could also do the bustle, cups and boning (not to mention the crooked seams). Ace Tailor's lady insisted that I could meet with the master tailor (who may be able to take care of all of my requests after all). I'm just dumbfounded that the work wasn't originally done by the Master Tailor or by someone that knew wedding dresses.... Also the price didn't seem right at all. When I was upset she told me that I could have a discount on the price but then went back and said she would still have to add a few other charges... I just paid the fee, held my tongue and left. Now I'll have to find another place to get my jeans and sundresses altered because I will never go back here. read more

This is a great location for me. The people are very pleasant and professional. There is a groovy vibe because the people who do the work are sitting in an open workshop and seem to be enjoying their craft- and it shows in their work. Full disclosure- the lady at the desk bribed me to write a good review by having a gentleman sew an opened seam in the crotch of one of my favorite pair of plastic trousers that I bout at Costco- for free while I waited, no return trip for pick-up required. I have used them for years and they always do a great job. The price is fair. read more

Ace has been my go to tailors going on two years now. I have never been disappointed with any of their work and if something did'nt turn out right the first time they have always made the effort and adjustments to make all my garments a perfect fit. I have the utmost confidence and have respect for their staffs abilities when it come to recuts and double recuts on my most expensive clothing knowing that the end results will turn out better than I could have even hoped for. I've been using Ace Tailors for 6 years and am lucky to have found them. This is the only location I trust to alter everything from my work attire to formal dresses. The atmosphere is always friendly and honest. You may find them to be priced higher than other shops but it's worth the $ to have the job done right. Some of my alterations have had to be done in stages or repaired do to wear, if an alteration isn't to my liking they'll fix it free of charge. No they don't accept AMEX and yes the turn around for an alteration can be up to a week but this just goes to show how busy they are and in most cases if you need a rush they'll accommodate you. read more

I'm short...so I often need jacket sleeves, shirt sleeves and pant legs shortened. Over the past 2 years, I've taken 20+ items here and walked away happy. At other tailors, I've had timeliness issues where things aren't ready at the agreed to time. No such issues here. Solid work on menswear. read more

My boss recommended Ace Tailors to me when I asked about a reputable shop. So far, they've altered my newest suit (pants hemmed, sleeve shortened) and replaced my sleeve insignia on my ASUs. This latter task is a difficult one that I don't even trust the person at Camp Mabry to do. I'll have more for them to do in the coming month. Ace saved my life and I will never forget it. I was a bridesmaid in a wedding and the dress that was ordered for me was too small. I flew into town the night before the wedding and tried the dress on. It was about 2 sizes too small (even though it was my size). I was about to be in big trouble with bridezillas about this! I went to Ace at 9AM on Saturday morning and explained my situation. They were amazing. They had my dress ready for me by 12:30. I took a bridesmaid dress here to get a very simple hem shortened. I expected the price to be ~$20-40. It was $58. And they wait until after measuring you and going through the process before telling you how much it will be. Outrageous price for such a simple job. I thought well, maybe they do an exceptional job. Not really - very standard - they even left some chalk dust on the bottom of the dress when given back. The only plus was that it was done before they quoted. Not going back, mostly due to such a ridiculous price. read more
