Recently I was looking for quotes on fixing a foul smell coming from my window AC unit. As someone who comes from a colder climate I had no experience in maintenance for window AC units. Anyone living the glamorous New York City pre-war apartment life knows the distinct pleasure of paying thousands of dollars to not be able control the sweltering heating system. I need to run the window unit AC just to be able to sleep at night and prevent my candles from melting (not a joke). Last summer I scored an awesome Harlem apartment. Last summer I endured the NYC heat in my awesome apartment with the help of my trusty Vornado fan. This summer I decided I couldn't do that again. My boyfriend and I bought an AC from Home Depot, only to find out we couldn't get the f*cking window guard out to put it in. We bought special screwdriver tips that didn't work. We asked the super, who said he couldn't do it. We asked management, who said the super couldn't do it. So, my old roommate found a working AC. And had her uncle's dudes install it in her bedroom window, and install a gate over that. And used it all summer. Fast forward: she moves out, and I move into the bedroom to find that the giant gate over the window prevents me from fixing the AC, which wasn't installed level and has been leaking into the bedroom. If you've lived in any New York apartment, you've seen some janky stuff. Spackle used as caulk, paint used to "fill" holes in plaster, you name it. But Max did some gorgeous workmanship on this AC. He braced the frame and the sash so the vibrations wouldn't completely rattle the window. He added insulation between the two panes. And he moved the AC down in the window so it's actually, you know, stable. To top it off, he's a funny, nice guy - my boyfriend and I def high-fived when we felt that first blast of cool, crisp air. Max just saved me $300! I called to see if this company cleans A/C units. He asked me why I need it cleaned and I said I thought that you were supposed to, so that it's more efficient. He told me the only thing I ever personally need to clean is the filter. Other than that, the A/C is a closed unit and I never need to clean the back side unless there is mold. He was very communicative--friendly and responsive, came within the convenient time window we confirmed, knew exactly what he was dealing with in an old home, was flexible and addressed any issues that came along with installing units that were a few years old, cleaned his work area and left no trace, and was nice to my godson and dog. The installation itself is super stable, sealed, tilts properly, and I'd be comfortable leaving it throughout the winter (with an added cover on the outside). We did a walk through of his work afterward, always a mark of someone who's not only thorough, but also proud of the work he or she does--as well Max should be! TL;DR - Max is a really awesome dude that did a terrific job. Couldn't recommend enough. -- Max came to our apartment the first time, took one look at UPS's fine work shipping a 15,000 BTU unit to our apartment, and knew things wouldn't look great on the inside of the box. Sure enough, the unit was broken. We offered to pay him for his time and he wouldn't take it saying it happened all the time. Couldn't have been nicer and more professional in what was a really unfortunate situation. Fast forward a couple weeks and we had him back to install a new unit of the same scale that was not destroyed in shipping. Not only was he quick and thorough in testing the unit to make sure it wasn't busted, but he also did an impeccable job. Let's start by saying no a/c is going to fit your window right out of the box. There will be futzing and there will be blood. You also probably can count on one hand how many times you've had to deal with this task so you are no expert. WITH THAT SAID. If you plan on purchasing an a/c, save yourself the headache and hire Max. After answering a few ez questions, he'll find you a unit, deliver, and install it. PERFECTLY. Max uses removable silicone caulk to make sure your unit is air tight and tilted for proper drainage and tests everything out before he steps out the door. I emailed in the morning and he responded within 15 minutes with answers to all my questions, a great quote for AC unit, delivery, and installation, and an appointment for the very next day. The next day he showed up early and had everything done in 30 minutes. He went above and beyond: Got me a quality brand unit, securely installed it and the window bracket, caulked and sealed all around it to maximize efficiency, and took the time to thoroughly clean everything up, including tidying away the box and other trash. Plus, he was just a nice guy. We chatted about gentrification in Brooklyn and finding good food in Harlem. I hear they do service and will remove and reinstall your unit when you move, so I will definitely be calling them again.
