After using two major HVAC repair/suppliers over a 7 year period which included many nonproductive service calls, a new Ptac unit, a new sleeve, a new coil, a new thermostat , new sensor and various other attempted interventions for a leak in the system, none of which ever resolved the actual problem. Had a similar experience as others -- this company is completely unresponsive; asked for a quote, someone came by to scope, and then a month later I have no formal proposal. I've followed up about 5 times, and sometimes sohohvac would confuse my project with another one and sometimes they'd just say, in effect, "working on it." Eventually they just stopped responding. We had a fairly detailed back-and-forth and he diagnosed the problem with my large Friedrich Kuhl air-conditioner as being caused by a Freon leak. He offered to recharge the unit for about $400 but with a cautionary note that it might not fix it for long ("could be a week or a year"). And that I was better off replacing my unit. It is impressive that a business owner would take the time to understand your problem and then objectively suggest you not use their services. But John went the extra step and also advised me on cost-effective replacement options. Our Mitsubishi mini split ductless hadn't seen a serviceman since it's installation...14 years ago. The bedroom return was only throwing mildly cool air from the rear return (there are 2). It was pretty obvious we needed a Freon recharge. I reached out to SohoHVAC & John explained he was really busy but could schedule me late in the week. When one of my apartment through wall a/c old units failed, I looked for a good company to repair or replace the broken unit. SoHo's reviews were excellent and the service was right on the mark. Spoke to Jon, the owner, who recommended a good replacement unit at a very fair price and in two days the new quiet and energy efficient unit was very professionally installed by two knowledgeable and experienced employees. Other companies wanted an "upfront" fee to check out my old unit but Jon was candid based on its age and manufacturer ( now out business) that it would be throwing good money after bad; especially since replacement parts would be extremely difficult to locate. Jon advised to call anytime for questions, etc on new unit and would quickly return if any adjustment, etc was needed. If another of my older units also passed on I would not hesitate to call Soho for replacement or service. My experience with previous companies is that they talk a good game but send inexperienced service people or ones that look at a broken unit and upsell you after wasted repair fails. From identifying the replacement model that would fit the existing sleeve, to recommending the proper BTUs needed, to competitive pricing, Soho HVAC checked all the boxes. Jon was so communicative, transparent, efficient, honest and most importantly skilled and competent in installing and replacing PTACs in my condo and wiring up Nest thermostats to them. I got quotes from 10+ HVAC specialists to replace 10+ year old heat pump PTAC units. Jon responded much faster than every other supplier I called for a quote, including the bigger shops - and his rate was the most competitive as well. Jon wasn't at all pushy either, and his quote was honest and the final price - which from working with a handful of similar HVAC professionals in the past has not been the case. He was on time (a bit early!) for the estimate, easy to work with, ordered the units really quickly (within the week!) and set up an install. He was also much technical than other pro's I contacted (on yelp and thumbtack), understanding what the Nests work with, how to wire them up and how to make them work. The job did take a bit longer than expected and had a few hiccups along the way, but he and his partner made sure to be respectful of the space and most importantly make sure the install was completed to code and worked great. He even texted back and forth after the job to make sure everything was set up correctly and small things were ironed out. Most importantly - the units so far work great, the thermostats look great and sync with alexa to make a seamless smarthome experience and Jon got it all going smoothly. Our central AC compressor outside unit wouldn't turn on and I reached out to many A/C contractors on Yelp. I received many eager early responses from highly rated contractors when I first reached out with my problem. And then things would fall apart with responses like 1. I can't/won't go to Manhattan 2. Our technicians are too busy to get to you because we are really busy 3. It's $350 for the contractor to walk into my house before any work is even done and on and on. I had an issue with my AC unit compressor, which needed to be replaced. My family went without running AC during peak summer for almost two months while I was sorting this out. I first called TWO other HVAC repair companies in NYC, who quoted me estimates for parts and labor that were 1) wildly expensive, and 2) wildly different from each other. I was desperate to get my family AC but I had a feeling I was about to get violently ripped off. So I found Jon on Yelp, and called him out of desperation. Even though he already had a completely booked schedule, he went overtime to come and service the issue during the evenings. The job took two nights to complete and at one point required an ingenious solution by Jon to work around an issue but it got done, and the AC's been working perfectly since then. All this and Jon charged me substantially less than the other two companies I'd called. It is really tough as a normal customer to find an HVAC company you can trust because most of them know you're uninformed and probably desperate, so when you do find someone who is actually a good guy and also very skilled, consider yourself very lucky. I would heartily recommend Soho HVAC - I found the guy with the most positive reviews on Yelp. I had engaged another company (the "preferred/recommended one" for our building) for several "maintenance" arrangements - uniformly, the units would leak a few weeks after indicating that they hadn't been cleaned. There are two places PTAC units in our building can leak - either the hot water pipe (that is the building's issue and one needs to be careful to inspect them every winter) and the other is the PTAC condenser unit gets clogged from lack of cleaning. The PTAC maintenance is simply to clean the filters and remove the gunk buildup from the condenser outlet. Anyway, I had all my units replaced with Islandaire units. Jon (the owner) personally oversaw his very courteous staff and patiently explained all the things I need to worry about. I would recommend him heartily to any other resident. read more

Customer Service Review: I was in need of a replacement AC Unit in my apt. I came across SohoHVAC and they had the best reviews so I reached out to Jon and he got back to me within 30 minutes. We exchanged yelp messages, moved to text, then got on the phone to chat about the Installation, etc. He was very knowledgeable and knew exactly what I needed. No runaround. He said he would be able to get the job done quick once the COI was in place. His price is in line if not better than other places. We had begun the COI process with my building but it turned out my building requires certain vendors that have been in the building for years. At least a half dozen companies claimed they couldn't do it and one who said he would, wanted to charge me a ridiculous price, It is apparent that unless you are going to hire these companies to install an a/c in your window, there is no interest. Installing an a/c in a window is not rocket science, I do it it every summer, though I do understand why some people may need that type of service.
