It's like dessert and a show! Scooping out ice cream is cliche now. I see some comments that it is expensive, and it is definitely on the pricier side of ice cream, but the rolls aren't exactly something you can buy at a container at Shop Rite. As an occasional treat, it was great to watch them pour out the ice cream and do their art and roll it up. There are like 10 different kinds and unlimited toppings! I went for the "hulk smash" matcha/strawberry ice cream because I wanted something more unique. I added mochi, pocky, and coconut flakes. I was tempted to go overboard with toppings, but I don't think everything would go with matcha. It was crowded when I went, but they moved the line really fast and had multiple employees able to roll out and make orders. There isn't a ton of seating but there's some and parking might be challenging as that's just the nature of Bloomfield Ave. I'd recommend parking a block or two over and usually you can find street parking with no meters. If it's nice weather, it's good to eat and walk. It is quite a bit per serving, so I could see sharing one wouldn't be unreasonable. I very much look forward to coming back at some point in the future to try the other flavors. I'd say that this place is worth checking out. There are a LOT of places to grab a bite to eat on nearby, so make a stop here after a meal, but leave enough room to get this! read more

They didn't disappoint, due to COVID we couldn't go inside but we placed our order online, the system was user friendly and easy to navigate. I seem to be the lone voice here not raving about this place. I got the #5 and thought the flavor was fine, nothing wonderful - certainly not worth $7. To be fair, I didn't get additional toppings - it was the ice cream with 2 small peanut butter cups mixed in. So without all the other stuff on top, the ice cream itself just wasn't very flavorful. I will say - and I'm not sure whether this is what they put on the frozen sheets or the sheets themselves - my ice cream had a funny metallic taste, almost like it was burnt. Honestly one of the best ice cream places I have ever been to. 10 Below in New York was the best rolled ice cream I have ever tried but Absolute Zero became my favorite in New Jersey. Although they were PACKED with kids and families, they were VERY efficient and served us within five minutes MAX. The staff (especially Amberly) was THE BEST. Literally. I never loved a server as much as she did. She made my ice cream with care and honestly served me with the best of her ability with a SMILE on her face! I love her. Please give her a raise LOL. The first time I saw this was on Facebook about a location in Chinatown. Since then, I've been seeing these popping up all over the place. After a warm dinner at Ani Ramen, I decided to venture across the street to see what the type was about. First, this place is tiny. It's probably better off to get your ice cream to go. I'd hate to see this place in the summer since it's in the heart of Montclair off one of their main streets. Anyways, the menu was pretty decent with different types of ice cream mixes. I, obviously, got something with mint chocolate in it. The process is this: you go in and order what you want. You give them your name and there's about a 10 minute wait for them to call your name up. Not 10 minutes for it to be ready, but 10 minutes for them to call your name so you can go watch your ice cream being made which is another like 3-5 minutes. There are three ice cream making stations that are behind plexiglass where you can see the whole process of them spreading the ice cream and banging and scraping, etc. The third machine is for those who order flavors with nuts involved (smart). So for those who have nut allergies, do not fear. Anyway, when they finally call you up, you better decide what FREE UNLIMITED ( yes. I said free AND unlimited) toppings you'd like on your ice cream. Being extremely full from dinner, I was boring and asked for a marshmallow and some pocky sticks...other patrons got chocolate syrup with fruity pebbles and condensed milk and fruits. Again, get whatever you want! It's unlimited!! When I finally came to eat my ice cream, it dawned on me how silly it was because it's literally ice cream that's rolled up into little tubes for a fancy display. The whole thing really is just to WATCH the process of the ice cream making. I couldn't really eat the ice cream rolled up because that's just how I am...I like for the ice cream to be a little bit more melted so it's got a creamier and smoother texture to it. They used ONE mint Oreo cookie to make my ice cream and it's really genius actually. They're saving on ingredients and charging almost $7 for a cup of ice cream. Anyway, that's a whole other story. This ice cream shop is walking distance from the Wellmont. This time around, I went to celebrate the end of my daughter's summer camp, which was at Montclair. There is cheap side parking available on the roads, just look around nearby. We ordered four types of rolled ice cream: The Hulk, Don't Thai Me Down, Golden Oreo, and Camp n Chill. The employees were so helpful and helped me personalize a few, such as guiding me to know that The Hulk would be great with strawberry picky added. There was no trouble taking out toasted coconut and adding strawberry to Dont Thai Me Down. I highly recommend. The ice cream is so reasonably priced for a personalized ice cream. Next time, I'm adding a toasted marshmallow to my rolled ice cream. It was so tasty and delightful! read more

There have been incarnations of various ice cream concepts throughout the years. Back in the 80s the mix-in concept gained traction and popularity. Ice cream was literally extruded through a press and infused with your choice of candies or whatever. Toppings literally morphed from, well, toppings to mix-ins. Fast forward 25 years and we have modern takes on this at such places as Cold Stone and Maggie Moos where hard work has replaced machinery and hand mix-ins are all the rage. Absolute Zero takes this fairly simple concept and runs with it in an entirely new and, might I add, exciting and delicious way. Sweet cream base is poured over a frozen metal disc and turned into amazing, custom blended ice cream before your eyes. Here, not only are the ingredients added, the ice cream itself is created. Rather than the quintessential scoop, ice cream is flattened and hand scraped and made into rolls. This, my friends, is sheer genius. The process is not easy and requires quite a bit of skill, strength, knowledge and might I add patience on their part as it takes the better part of 5 minutes to create. The concept is so interesting and delicious that we ventured there yesterday which was in fact the coldest day of 2016 so far. And, I'm here to tell you that I'm damn glad we did. Now, $7 prix fixe is pricey for ice cream even though you can literally choose as much or little as you want put into it. However, after going here, experiencing the process and tasting the result, I have to tell you that it's a damn bargain unlike any other. If you have kids or just a sweet tooth that only ice cream can satisfy, run to this gem in Montclair. I promise you that you'll be more than happy you did. 5 ENTHUSIASTIC stars. read more

Thai ice cream finally comes to this area of NJ in the form of Absolute Zero, and it doesn't disappoint! I have been eyeing this place ever seen the "Coming Soon" sign popped up on the storefront, and was delighted to finally have an opportunity to try their ice cream on a frigid Saturday night. Believe me when I say this place is popular. I mean, really popular. 20-degree something temperature does not stop high schoolers, college students, out-of-towners, etc. from making a pit stop here. This complicates things, since 1. each order takes about 5 minutes to make and 2. there is limited seating in the store. When we went, we saw one guy "save" the entire bar seating for his friends. If you come here, people, "do the right thing" and let others sit, especially if they need to wait 20-30 minutes for their ice cream. An no, that is not an exaggeration, the line can get long and the wait even longer, at least during evening hours. Despite those minor snafus, the ice cream is delicious and absolutely worth a try. At $7 per order (one size only - five "rolls" of ice cream with your choice of topics comes with each order), it is a pricy cup of ice cream, but I consider it fair for the labor and the quality. Each order is painstakingly made by hand and to your customization. There is a choice of different combinations which you can tailor with your own preference of toppings. I've tried the Hulk Smash (matcha + strawberries) and Don't Thai Me Down (thai iced tea + coconut flakes) and both were absolutely scrumptious. My hubby ordered the Peanut Butter Me Up and had a toasted marshmallow with it, which he said would please any peanut butter lovers out there. We've noticed that while for the most part the quality of the end product is similar, there are still noticeable differences between some of the staff and how the rolls come out in the end - but don't let that deter you from ordering. I am pretty sure at this point any flavor you get would be great. I recommend adding pocky and condensed milk to the Asian ice cream flavors - trust me, I wouldn't steer you wrong. Each order is served with a nifty color-changing spoon that turns blue when it's cold. The fact that the spoons are bright blue, sitting in my kitchen sink right now tells me I need to turn the heat up in my house. They have a loyalty stamp card, make sure you hold on to one. And oh, the spoon changes color to purple when it's cold (but not to something else when it's warm -- too bad....) I never get peanut butter ice cream but this was so good I would get it for myself. The peanut butter wasn't overpowering and the nutter butter gave it a nice crunch. My boyfriend, who LOVES peanut butter, said he liked it but we would've wanted more of the peanut butter flavor. What does he know anyway? Lol. I love that you can get unlimited toppings. I kept it light since it was my first time having ube and didn't want to go overboard. However, the light flavor of the ice cream allows room for toppings without the overwhelming sugar overload. The owner Kut told me he personally goes to the fruit supplier every day to ensure all the fruits are fresh. He does not believe in using the standard delivery of his supplies as the quality can sometimes be uneven. The guy is really into good quality control and the great tasting ice cream certainly reflects the owner's care.
