Similar to another review, the bugs in question are likely carpet beetles, not bedbugs. Anyway, I appreciate Mike's time and his advice on ways to get rid of carpet beetles myself instead of having him come over first and spray the whole house with toxic chemicals. Called Mike at Abell for a wasp nest removal, after a chat on the phone he told me it was most likely paper wasp and that he could come out the next day to remove them (they are more dormant in the morning). There was a mixup on time ~ but Mike was good enough to stick around and wait for me to arrive. It tool about 5 minutes for him to do the job and remove the nest/wasps. We had a good talk after. I would recommend Mike and his business for and pest control jobs. He was polite, affordable and fast! read more

Being an extreme clean freak OCD parent, I never ever thought I would be dealing with the events of the past week. On Friday, my 6-year old son woke up with itchy little red bumps head to toe. My husband and I thought we had brought home bed bugs from our last vacation so we immediately searched his room and found one or two tiny bugs. After thorough research, we came upon Abell Pest Control as our first choice for bed bud extermination. I called Mike at 8:30am and he started out the conversation in a calming tone, saying he would come right away to check the room and work through this with us. He has so much experience and almost acted like a therapist in the situation. He arrived in the window he said he would arrive--and was very careful and thorough in searching our son's bedroom. Amazingly, he said he couldn't find a single bug, but for peace of mind, suggested that we have his trained dog (Raven) come out over the weekend to search the house. Before he left, he gave us some "climb up" protectors to place under our daughter's crib to protect her from any bugs. Well, that night while vacuuming our daughter's room, we found a few more bugs. I called Mike (it was 8pm and I interrupted his late dinner) and he patiently addressed my questions. He said he would check his schedule to see when he could come with Raven. In the meantime, he asked us to save the bugs in a ziplock bag so he could take a look (ewww, but we did). I must admit, I was getting anxious about not having an appt for Raven to search the house, so on Sunday, I took a photo of one of the bugs and texted it to Mike. He immediately called me to let me know, it, in fact, was NOT a bed bug! Apparently, we had a (mild) case of carpet beetles. Still ewww, but a much better situation than bed bugs. He talked me through some options and told me to get a bed bug trap just to ensure they were not bed bugs. Mike still came out on Monday to check the rooms, check the traps and confirm that the rooms were clear of bed bugs. He confirmed that we had a case of carpet beetles--but because it was a relatively mild case, he suggested we try clearing them out by daily vacuuming first (he said he didn't want to expose us to the chemicals/spray treatment until after we tried our daily vacuuming--I appreciate that he didn't want to just jump to the toxic/fee-based approach!). So, we'll try this and see what happens... Mike is an honest, hard-working and knowledgeable man. Scheduling was a bit tricky, but I understand he is a busy man. He gave great advice on general pest control--and he even took time to check our house for potential rodent entry areas (without asking for any fees). The only (low) fee we paid was for the initial visit when he searched my son's room for bed bugs. It's hard to find honest home consultants like Mike and we highly recommend him. read more

We had wasps building a nest in the eves of our roof. I called Mike and also sent him an email. He was quick to respond and came out a couple of days later. Despite being very tricky to get at, Mike went up the ladder and went to work on them. It was difficult to tell exactly where the nest was, and a couple of days later there were still some wasps around. I called Mike again and he immediately offered to come back and give them a second shot, this time using some additional powder that carried a residual effect. Mike's pricing was very reasonable, and by coming back a second time, he showed that he really cared about getting it right. Great job, 5 stars. read more

We had literally a wall of cockroaches coming out at night over the retaining wall in our backyard when we first moved into our home. We tried Roachprufe and RAID and whatever-else-have-you imaginable but it was all gone after 1 spray with Mike. Our yard has been roach free for years. It is really hard to get ahold of him by phone but never has a problem with getting a prompt reply with an email. Works for me. read more

(My profile says Toronto but I am living in SF) Michael loves what he does, educates you and gets the job done. My mom is visiting this Thursday so needed someone ASAP, was initially going to go with some of the bigger pest control companies, but they were unresponsive and couldn't come in time. Michael had seen that I had called multiple times, and called me after hours and talked me through my suspicions of bed bugs, and put my mind at ease that everything was going to be ok. He promptly came the next morning and did an assessment of the place, looking at the pic I took of the bug I caught, he concluded it was fleas and NOT bed bugs (phewf), and did a full spray of my living room and bedroom. It ended up being a good 70% cheaper than I thought it was going to be, as suppose to the full bed bug treatment. I think most other pest companies would've done the full treatment to make more money off of the sale. I now see that the 1 star comments are those that are looking for a corporate experience where they are greeted by a receptionist, booked and routed appropriately. What you have to understand is that Michael is a 1 person company (+ his furry gal Raven), and he is 65 years old and operates off his personal phone, so you have to be respectful and cognizant of that! read more

Found a little cockroach in my kitchen last night and freaked out. I call Abell this morning at 10 and talked to Michael. Explained the situation, sent him a text with the address et voila' after less then one hour from my call, he showed up to my house. We have fruit tree and a vegetable garden and he was extremely careful to spray away from those area. He is a very nice guy, he was answering my question and give me tips. I am very disappointed with Abell's service. Mike showed up at our home and didn't finish his work because he didn't bring enough treatment to remove wasp nests. He promised to come back the next weekend but never did. I called and talked to him but he refused to complete his work even though I already paid full for the service that he promised. I really had high hopes for Abell, but unfortunately the extent to which I used Abell stopped at the initial phone call. I called Abell in researching a pest control operator for bed bugs. However, getting my questions answered was like pulling teeth. I wasn't even 100% sure I had called the right place and had to ask, "Is this Abell Pest Control?" One of the important things when choosing a PCO for bed bugs is that they should be willing to answer all your questions. For me, it was important to find out what happens in terms of process, chemicals, and follow up visits. If your PCO knows what he or she is doing, you should be able to receive detailed explanations. Upon asking Abell how he treats bed bugs, he replied with, "I do pest control on them." Period. After that, I had to be really detailed with every question such as, "Do you use a spray?" or "Do you steam clean?" but generally came out of the call learning that I wasn't going to get my questions answered to my satisfaction. Abell might be good for all I know, and might be good for other pest control, but when dealing with bed bugs, you should look for better communication. Chances are, if you've landed here because of bed bugs, you are itchy, suffering from insomnia, paranoid about them spreading, changing your clothes 3 times a day, putting ALL of your belongings in plastic ziploc bags, and frantically searching for a good solution that will end it all. A good PCO should be able to understand your situation and try to be helpful with the skill set and methods that they offer. [As a side note, upon consulting a friend of mine in NY who also had a bed bugs problem, she advised, "A good PCO should almost be like a therapist." I'm not sure I quite need that, or that you will either, but she has a point. It definitely helps to find someone who understands the plight of the bed bugs, and what they do to you both mentally and physically.] One thing that might be useful for anyone searching for a solution for bed bugs is that Abell Pest Control gave the cheapest range (not quote, as I never asked for an inspection) around, which started at a little under $200 for one room. The average elsewhere seems to be around $450. read more

Mike is the bomb! I had a persistent ant issue and spiders trying to invade my house and thanks to yelp I was able to track down Mike. Not before calling the other companies that were totally over priced. He came over the same day sprayed the perimeter of my house and other nooks and crannies. He said they would die off little by little and to give it a few days. The next day I still saw them and became worried but remembered that he said to wait becauase these pests take the poison over to the nest and that takes time. Like many other posters, I called needing to identify a bug I found (rule out bed bugs). Mike asked me to send a picture of the bug on a white background, and within 2 hours responded with a URL to the type of bug. He then called to reassure me it wasn't bedbugs, and tell me what to do. He offered to come out, but said it wasn't necessary and told me what to do. I plan to use him for quarterly preventative treatments on the exterior of our home. Bees are busy swarming outside...building their home on my wall through a hole of the stucco. That hole is only 1 inch big and I really should have repaired it weeks ago!!! The story was, saw ~30 bees flying around the whole, and thought that I can fill up the hole tonight when bees are not home.....don't know if they learnt about my thoughts, 30mins later there came more than 1000 of them! Flying around, then swarming! So I searched and called Mike, he came over within 10 mins and provided his help. Turned out that queen is inside and that's beyond his scope...but really I have to appreciate the help he has offered and the prompt action he has taken. read more

We had fleas and bed bugs. The apartment we moved into apparently had the bed bugs but we were unaware until 2 months in. We discovered a wasp next in our backyard. My husband tried several methods himself but no luck. I finally search yelp and found Abell Pest. Omg, I called to discuss a bug problem I had and I was so put off by the way the phone was answered that I couldn't even continue with the call. First off the phone number listed was answered with a rude "hello" and when I asked if it was an exterminator I received a rude "yes, it's an exterminator, what do you need" I realized the lack of customer service so I said never mind and ended the call. Then I was called back from this person who repeated that he was an exterminator and what did I need. I explained that it was obvious he didn't provide good customer service by the way he answered the phone, so I would be continuing on to look for another company. He then told me again rudely, "well it's a holiday you likely won't have luck getting anyone else to answer" I repeated that I would just continue my search for another company, at which time he tells me "I'm trying to be nice and help you here and you are the one being rude" I can't remember the last time I had such an encounter from the very start! Just off this one incident I would never use this company, no matter how good their actual services may be. read more
