I hired Planet Orange because I had termites, and what I got was a pest. All I wanted was for Planet Orange to honor its written 24 month warranty for work performed on January, 3, 2018, approximately 18 months ago as of this date. In the end, they did some work but not without serious problems. Even so, it required 45 emails, over 11, days with the Vice President of Operations, Scott Mendenhall. The main topic of these emails was the specific location of the area to be treated and whether the infestation represented the re-emergence of last year's colony and thus still under warranty or a new colony, not under warranty. Ask yourself if you really want to exchange 45 emails with a termite exterminator. I initially tried to contact Scott by phone, but was told he was out of the office for a few days. He soon contacted me by email. He confirmed a price of $1950 for termite treatment as quoted by his sales representative in the office. He said this was a significant discount from the price of $2350 quoted by his on-site inspector, not to mention the "normal price" of $2800. I brought up the warranty. The emails began. His emails were a maze of miscommunication. In addition to explanations of why this infestation wasn't covered by the warranty, the emails included lists of treatment options, additional warranties, costs, discounts, prorations, and repeated requests for clarification of previously agreed upon terms. The emails continued even after I electronically signed the company's Work Authorization Contract. I started replying with "See Previous Email." Despite this Scott made no attempt to contact me by phone until the situation was beyond salvaging and, even then, he contacted my wife by mistake. Ask yourself if you really want to exchange 45 emails with a termite exterminator. In one of his emails Scott stated, "I am, in fact, letting you use 20/20 hindsight," to accept complimentary services, generous discounts, and prorated warranties. A remarkable offer, considering I had already told him, in writing, that "if I could do it all over again, I would have never continued to do business with Planet Orange." If only he had offered me 20/20 hindsight a few years earlier, just like I'm offering you now. Scott is going to post a quick, detailed response to my review. He's quick to respond to bad reviews. I can anticipate his rebuttal already. I could respond, but why? Even if every word he writes is the absolute truth, do you really want to exchange 45 emails with a termite exterminator? In the end (see UPDATE), Scott acknowledged the contract I signed days earlier which provided for treating the area in question at no cost. The agreement also included a preventative treatment provided at my expense though at a remarkable discount according to Scott. I passed on an offer of a complimentary treatment to a new infestation in my garage. I couldn't accept it in good conscience and still write an honest review. UPDATE: Well, I thought it ended there, but nope. This morning I went down into the crawl space beneath my house. I found a 16" piece of termite infested oak firewood, sitting in plain sight, directly beneath the termite infestation treated by Planet Orange two days earlier. There is no reason for a piece of oak firewood to be under my house. I don't have a stack of oak firewood. I don't burn oak firewood. I don't have a wood burning stove. I searched the entire crawl space beneath my home. I found only one piece of termite infested oak firewood, and it was directly below the infestation treated by Planet Orange. I informed Scott of this and sent a photo of the termite infested firewood. In response, he sent a detailed explanation of the treatment used by Planet Orange, and when I could expect to see its effect. I wrote the following: "Scott, You are obfuscating. I spent the last three hours in the crawl space beneath my house. Try to follow: I'm not talking about whether "Termidor is a non-repellent pesticide," or if it's "not a direct and immediate kill," or that "The product let's termites continue normal activity for up to 60-90 days." I'm talking about the fact that 2 inspectors and 2 service technicians from Planet Orange overlooked a 16" piece of oak firewood laying on the ground directly beneath the termite infestation that was treated on Wednesday and previously treated 18 months ago. No one even mentioned it was there, let alone suggested it be removed. Instead, you sold me a $550 preventative treatment. What we liked: - OUTSTANDING Cooperation, working WITH and FOR us in all respects, and especially in our case, schedules. - Outstanding people - Very professional at all times in all respects, polite, on time, willing to explain what, why, how, what the treatments entailed and what chemicals would be used. - Willing to work HARD to meet our extremely tight schedule constraints (Thank you Alan). - No pressure, no questions asked when we went ahead and made structural corrections with our own resources (not requesting whatever resources they might have available to contract), and their acceptance of our work done except to verify that identified issues were appropriately corrected. While they do have a contractor's license to do that type of repair work, when we made no request for those services, they gave no indication of wanting to jump in and acquire additional business to remedy construction items. - First Impressions: The initial inspector Ryan made a tremendously positive, professional, and competent impression. He exhibited a very ethical set of values and honesty. He set the standard for subsequent contact with other Planet Orange personnel. Concerns, complaints, did not like: None. Recommendation: Would definitely recommend this San Jose team. We contacted the San Jose CA, Planet Orange Company on a Tuesday. By noon of the next day, Wednesday, there was an individual, Ryan, out to do the initial inspection. He was very professional, personable, polite, through, and willing to explain anything involved. He gave us verbal report before he left. I had a formal report via e-mail the next day, and a second individual was present at the appointed time on Friday to inspect areas that Ryan could not access. I had an e-mail of the supplemental inspection by Saturday. Based on the verbal and written reports, and with the help of a plumber who made himself available Friday and over the weekend, he and I had all 5-construction type issues corrected by Sunday evening/Monday morning. Planet Orange was contacted Monday after noon, and had treatment team out as scheduled by 1 PM the next day, Tuesday. On Wed at noon as scheduled, a subsequent inspector came to verify and to "clear" all identified construction and termite/water damage/mold treatment issues. I had an e-mail copy of the "clearance document" by 4 PM Wed. afternoon. EVERY person we contacted, met, who did work and inspections was UNFAILINGLY polite, professional, through, did what they could to minimize impacting us, and cleaned up after their work. They unfailingly explained anything we questioned if their initial explanation was not clear to us. Alan who did scheduling from the office was hugely responsive to getting his people to our house to meet our very tight schedule constraints. Their report, at first, seemed to redundantly identify issues and provided recommended remedies. When questioned, the explanation was that they were providing different recommended solutions to the item identified more than one time. Example: evidence of dry wood termites in a post and side door. The first time identified the recommendation was to repair, remove, replace damaged wood. The second time those items were identified, a recommendation was provided to have the entire house tented and fumigated. Thus, they presented us some choices of treatment, not a one size fits all approach. Their response was extremely professional, prompt, polite, and their inspectors, application teams, and office personnel were exemplary in their behavior and responsiveness. I don't believe ANY organization could have been more responsive, prompt, on time, or could have worked more effectively to deal with our schedule and problems. read more

We live in a 1,450 est. sq 40 or so year old home in the Monterey, Calif, south of San Jose, Calif -- about a 1 hour drive. I asked for an inspection. A Bobby Malone came out and wow! Talk about the cream of the crop of termite inspectors! Other termite companies had sent inspectors who took a look at the "inspector's hell" attic of our nearly flat top roof where the "attic" was only about 24" at the peak and more like 15" along the sides of "crawl space". And that "crawl space" required crawling over the 2"x6" beams and worse yet, being a Hodini contortionist to crawl over, under and around the heating piping which takes much of the little crawl space. And the "crawl space" (belly slither space more like it) under the house being almost as bad. Other company inspectors have stuck their head up in our "attic" and reported it "inaccessible" and just shined a light around. Bobby Malone actually crawled the entire area of the 'inaccessible' attic "crawl space". Covering every part of it. I know so, because I held a flood light from my spot at the attic crawl space trap door entrance and watched him. He likewise slithered everywhere under the house. I was not pleased to find I had termites, dry wood and subterranean, but for $2,800 and a 2+ year warranty, using long term persistent agents plus the shorter term orange oil, the termites would be not only killed but the wood made long term unpaletable to termites. A few days later, a two man crew (two small, skinny guys) spent from 10:15am to 4:30pm armed with Malone's "termite map" and carefully, methodically, thoroughly drilled holes to inject the termite poisons, also spraying all around the surface wood for surface barrier treatments; also trenching around the outside edge of the house, injecting persistent agents as well as treating the inside edge, etc of the foundations, plus the foundation concrete/wood posts under the house. They wore white booties over their shoes so did not mess the carpets. They swept and cleaned up after themselve before leaving. The treatment crew (Vlad Naynodin and Richard "Subs" Castillo) carefully explained everything they did, and were courteous and polite without fail despite our inspector-hell house and that the predicted rain storm arrived early. Over my many years of life, I have learned a few things. One being that, for example, when one finds a really good, honest auto mechanic, you stay with him. Bobby Malone is SO good an inspector, SO thorough, that he is now MY inspector. He is the one I will request for any future inspections. I've had others...and the others were "ok", but Bobby Malone is the "Superman" of inspectors (no exaggeration). And I want Vald and his right hand man "Subs" (called thus because he fits himself into inaccessible areas so well...being a small, skinny guy) for future work. All this and we did not have to rent motel rooms for 2/3 days so a tenting outfit could kill all but leave the house without the long term persistent agents Planet Orange injects into many small drill holes in the wood, which they pump good quantities in to travel up and down the termite tunnels through the wood beams, etc. For the future, we will be staying with Planet Orange, because Malone literally goes everywhere and the poisoning crew come with Malone's termite locations map and treat every termite location plus adjacent areas carefully. Plus there is the 2 year warranty with free follow up inspections. I see several of the negative reviews which all seem to target the Termite division. I wanted to give them a chance because several of my friends have been extremely satisfied with the whole process including termite and pest control. I had an inspection for termites (none where found). The termite division did just as will as the pest department and I signed up for monthly pest control services. I had both General Pest techs Jesse and Rudy out the house (at different times) and they both very knowledgeable. After the inspection we discussed the treatment plan and they were able to treat the same day. We didn't have to leave or stay gone for hours after the treatment was done.. MAJOR PLUS !!!!! (since I have kids) I have yet to have one bad experience while working with them. The staff is very pleasant and explained in detail and answered to all my questions. I have never had to wait for more than 30 min for a return call after leaving them a message. There was one time were they were late but I received a phone call 45 min prior to the appointment from the office staff and the technician informing me of the situation. Their product works and its ABSOLUTELY safe. I never wanted to use the harmful stuff, so i am glad Planet Orange is around. If you want the best service and you like to be able to get a hold of a person not a computerized voice..... CALL PLANET ORANGE ASK FOR TIFFANY... SHE WILL TAKE GREAT CARE OF YOU AND YOUR PEST ISSUES!!!!!!!! IF I WOULD GIVE 100 STARS I WOULD!!!!!!! About four years ago I saw flying insects entering a hole in the outside section of a rafter member on my house. I paid for an inspection by a traditional termite company, which confirmed that I had dry wood termites and recommended tenting the house. Because I have two indoor cats, because of the toxicity of the gas used in the tenting treatment, and because of the overall inconvenience of tenting and vacating the house, I looked for an alternative. Coincidentally, I saw a column in the SF Chronicle by Richard "the "Bugman, Fagerlund, an entomologist who wrote a regular column about insect control and who is an advocate of not using, or at least minimizing the use of, toxic pesticides. His column mentioned XT-2000 Orange Oil as a non-toxic and effective treatment for dry wood termites. I wrote to him for his recommendation of a local company that used Orange Oil, and he recommended Planet Orange. I called them for an inspection, and after they confirmed I had dry wood termites in several places in the attic crawl space and in a gardening shed, I engaged them to treat the affected areas with Orange Oil. They also sprayed all of the bare wood rafters and underside of the roof with a solution containing borax (I believe), which is supposed to help prevent reinfestation by dehydrating termites that come in contact with the treated wood. The cost for everything was in the same ballpark as the quoted cost for tenting the house, but without all of the hassle and inconvenience, and I was very pleased with the manner and professionalism of both the inspector and the crew that did the treatment. I have had an annual inspection each year since then under an extended warranty, and no new infestation has been found. I just had my most recent inspection last week, and I believe it is the third year in a row that Vlad has been the inspector. As with his predecessors, I couldn't be more pleased with the service he provided. Vlad comes across as thorough, knowledgeable, honest, and genuinely interested in me as a customer, and he only enhanced what was already my high opinion of Planet Orange. read more

This place was a problem from the first time they came out. I initially called and started service for basic pest control service. When they initially came out they didn't even go around my entire property, just the front and side of the house. With a new home and lots of construction around there was an issue with pests originally so I called for them to come back out two weeks later to take care of the issue. They couldn't come back out till the next scheduled service 2 weeks later which seemed a bit of a waste for signing up for their monthly service that included free in between services as needed but I waited it out. The tech didn't even knock on the door, just did the service out front again only. I ended up going to the store and buying pest control bait myself which took care of the problem for a few weeks. I then called again but once again was told that they would not be out till the next scheduled appointment as they were too busy. Now that my next service was scheduled, I got the reminder call the day before. My bank account was charged the monthly fee. Then I got the call saying that they were unable to come out because of an "emergency" on their part. The recording said they would call to reschedule. No phone call came so I called them since they had already charged me for the month. They scheduled a new date. On that day I called to inform them that there was an issue with some flies that I wanted handled while they were here. The person on the phone said ok they would handle it. I had to ask her if she wanted my name or address. She said ok. I then asked what time they would be coming out and she then had to ask for my name again so she could check which just confirmed that she had never even taken down my name and address to begin with. My son was home that whole day and no one ever showed up. When this place does the service they never knock, never leave an invoice or card to show that they actually even showed up. While preparing to install H/C grab bars we were most unpleasantly surprised by termites. That was tuesday. Planet Orange came and inspected on thursday. Report arrived via email thursday night and said everything the inspector had told me. Crew came on friday (5 minutes early) and was done in 3 hrs. I saw white subterranean termites so was told orange oil cant solve the problem (orange oil is for the flying kind). He explained that a new termiticide Altriset is also earth friendly & long lasting, so they sprayed & drilled the perimeter of my house and used it. I looked Altriset up online and was happy with their recommendation. They didnt spray under my house because the entry point was near where they drilled, and they injected more Altriset in that area. Articles online seem to agree with what they did, as subterranean termites only feed in houses: they live under ground. I'm a control freak and observed most of their work (as I do w all contractors). They were friendly but professional, and didnt seem to mind my questions and scrutiny. They vacuumed up the drilling residue and did a neat job of patching all those holes. My hubby had the "honor" of drilling his parents floor many years ago to spray for termites and said that the price charged by Planet Orange was well worth it, considering half of our house perimeter is concrete! Plus, its good to know that Tony and Scott have years of experience and the right tools. My only complaint is that the inspector found a couple of areas of dry rot that I didnt want to hear about. Ah, the joys of home maintenance. I will definitely be getting a reinspection because I would not have known except for those grab bars. read more

As a business operator and givin the fact that we had just opened... I was surprised I was not being overwhelmed with phone calls asking for my business. With that being said. I reached out (using yelp) as anyone should do that respects YELP! The reviews speak volumes and rang true. Mom and pop had great reviews, but never returned my invite for a quote. Having run a similar business that had been using a Big name company that rhymes with germinex... I went ahead and called them for service. Job done, right? This is one of those things you leave in control of the professionals you hired.. Walk away and run your business. Weeks later, in my office,... My guy that comes out to check up and do his thing had placed a trap with two dead mice on the stack of cases of bottled water I keep stored for my customers. The tiny bottles from Costco. Kids and moms grab them from the ice chest I leave in my waiting area for god sake. I don't want to imagine someone getting sick because of germ guys lack of respect for others. With that set aside. I received a call from Todd at planet orange. After telling him the aforementioned story. He assured me, no such thing would happen with his people. The real reason for this long ass review is the one other thing that Todd had mentioned. "My inspector will call you and set up a time that works for you." Not just show up assuming they have the job because I need them. Got a call today from Josh, my soon to be problem solver. Thanks, Todd & Josh for starting things off in a way a busy GM can respect.
