Sorry, this report is from about a year ago. I meant to post it back then, but I completely forgot. We started hearing animals running around in our attic. One day, there was an extremely loud noise coming from the water heater closet. When we checked, we found that the insulation board covering the attic access above the water heater had been broken through. The instruction manual attached to the water heater had been chewed into pieces, with shredded paper scattered all over the floor. It looked pretty alarming, so we immediately called Rodent Control Inc. When they arrived, they told us the damage had been caused by rats. They explained that there are two types of rats--small rats and large rats. After spending quite a bit of time inspecting the attic and taking several photos, they told us there was a large amount of rat droppings and rated the infestation as a 9 out of 10 in severity. They said it needed immediate attention. Their proposed solution was to seal all possible entry points around the crawl space and roof, remove the contaminated insulation, disinfect the attic, and charge us more than $5,700. Replacing the insulation would cost even more. The next day, we contacted another company, Ratting on Rodents, for a second opinion. They told us that the type of damage we described was much more consistent with squirrels than rats. Sure enough, they found a dying squirrel in the corner of the water heater closet and removed it. They then inspected the roof and discovered that the metal chimney cap had fallen off. They explained that the squirrel had most likely entered through the chimney. That same day, they replaced the chimney cap, sealed the opening above the water heater closet, and repaired six damaged crawl space vents around the exterior of the house. They also noted that the droppings in the attic did not appear to be fresh, but set traps in both the attic and the crawl space as a precaution. They returned one to two weeks later to inspect the traps and also provided a one-year warranty, promising to come back if any rodent issues reappeared. The total cost for everything was only $1,150. I have never heard anything since then. The problem is gone! Based on my experience, Rodent Control Inc. seems to excel at sales and customer service, but they were unable to accurately identify the root cause or recommend the appropriate solution. I would strongly encourage homeowners to get a second opinion before committing to an expensive proposal. In our case, another company solved the actual problem for about one-fifth of the cost. Good service is important, but accurate diagnosis and effective solutions are what ultimately matter. read more

is hard to find a pest control company that focuses on just rodents. I called a number of places when I heard a rat in my wall, and people don't even get back to me. The only companies that got back to me were the ones who also handle insects. They all want a subscription, which indicates to me they are not there to solve my problem of preventing the problem in the first place. After I killed a rat in my garage I hired a handy man to cover all holes with the steel wool. A few months later I hear something in my walls in a different part of the house. Rodent Control got back to me right away. Sean came out and did a free inspection and gave me an estimate to do the prevention work since he did not see any signs of a rat infestation. The quote was rather high, but Sean's selling point is that this is a permanent solution. It is not catch them and come back every month. This is a one and done solution. They sent a team of 2, Oscar and Ivan, who worked all morning and afternoon on my small, old house. For reference my house is just over 1,700 sq ft. One started at the top and inspected the attic space. They used a sanitizer but there was no evidence of an infestation. They set traps anyway. The other was on the roof and covered all holes and vents with steel mesh (not the steel wool). Next they worked on covering all vents with steel mess. Next they worked on the crawl space under the house and covered all cracks into the area with cement. In addition, they replace the access door to the scrawl space and did a great job with the new door. They set more traps. I have been hearing some scratches on bedroom's ceiling in early mornings recently and decided to get some professional help. I called Rodent Control and set an appointment for a free estimate. These guys were great at the rodent abatement part of the job. They took care of the problem, and I no longer have vermin in my crawl space. HOWEVER - if you want them to do anything outside of rodent control, maybe rethink that. We also had them put down insulation in our attic. One of their guys put his foot through my ceiling and opened a good-size hole in the drywall. They had the insulation installers repair it, and they did a hack job. Not only was the drywall repair sloppy, but the 3x3' piece of plastic they put down did nothing to contain the dust and plaster they left everywhere without cleaning it up. This all took 7 hours, so I cleaned up their mess because I just wanted them gone from my house. We withheld a small portion of the balance until the damage was fixed. They came out again several days later and fixed everything professionally, so great. Done. An hour after the guys left, the calls to pay the balance started. 6 calls/texts in 15 minutes. I was on a call for work and couldn't answer immediately. I'm sorry, but that's harassment. I paid the balance when I got off my call 20 minutes later. Bottom line - use them for rodent abatement. Any other services at your own risk, and pay them immediately unless you like being harassed. read more

I have an old rental cabin that like many mountain properties is a rodent magnet. The whole front of the house is 6" - 12" off the ground, and everybody I've had out before said that there was nothing that could be done aside from traps inside the house (or outside trapping, when one time a family of skunks moved in). The tenants were trapping mice pretty regularly, so I decided to give Rodent Control a try. Sean came out two days later, took a look, and figured out the best way to approach the problem. Two days later, his crew crawled all around underneath, putting mesh over any opening, and added a mesh skirt all the way around the base of the house, burying the bottom in the ground and using cement where needed to seal it against masonry.
