Chicken Pakora
Denise R.

The food, the service, and the environment was great! We loved everything we ate. Our waitress gave us the best suggestions and options as we had so many questions about the menu because we've never had Nepalese food before. She was so helpful and gave the best service! Santos was also a delight to have. He served our food and explained which was vegan and what wasn't. One of our friends was vegan, so he was trying to be considerate of that and thought it was so sweet. We ate so much and still had so much food left over! I would definitely recommend this place to anyone who wants to try something new!

A small tucked away place, in downtown hayward where it can be easily missed. Definitely worth checking out, First time having momos, so was wondering what it tasted like. Service was very meh, not much people in the resturant and still nobody greeted, or checked on us throughout the time spent here while we tried to order, get the check, etc. 3.5/5 - Garlic Naan - Usually our go-to any time we get some curry. However all the garlic was burnt on this one. Tasted nothing but burnt flavor of the garlic overpowering everything 3.8/5 - Butter Naan - Generous portions, and was very crispy and fluffy, perfect to scoop up naan with. Butter is not spread well though as it was only in the middle. Would of made the dish better. 3/5 - Jhol Momo - Excited to try the dish. Presentation looks good, however the soup flavor was not great on top of it the momo was just very spicy overpowering any flavor in the momo itself. Soup is nutty but not much else comes through. Felt bland other than spice. 4/5 - Sadheko Momo - These fried momos were better than the soup ones. Crispy and has great spices to pair with it. Can't go wrong with these and worth to order. 4.2/5 - Butter Chicken - Classic curry. Very buttery, creamy and tangy with spices hitting you all around. Definitely cant go wrong. Generous amount of chicken to go with it as well. 3.5/5 - Tandoori chicken - Felt a bit dry, overall. Flavor is good and decently tender, but slightly overcooked where it sticks to the bone and not as easily to eat. Had better ones elsewhere, just could be better executed on cooking time.

First things first, our waiter Santos was very accommodating when we told him my sister was Vegan. He was able to explain which dishes were vegan and which could be made vegan. The food was great, but a bit on the salty side for my family. This was our first time trying Nepalese cuisine and I would come again but ask them less salty. My favorite was chili paneer!

Decent Nepalese food! The owner is super sweet. We went around 11am so we beat the lunch rush. The interior is cozy and homey. There aren't too many tables but I am not sure how packed they usually get. The food is warm and cozy, but nothing too inspiring or memorable. If you're in the area, this is a great contender, but I wouldn't go out of my way to eat here.

Nice Nepal restaurant that serves late into the night for pick up or dine in. Very clean from what I gathered. The goat curry and naan and a Nepal beer was what I needed fr a late night craving.

Chicken Thali

I was craving some butter chicken so I decided to check this place out. Ordered the chicken momo, butter chicken, garlic/cheese naan, and chicken thali. The chicken momo is similar to a Chinese steamed dumpling and was a perfect plate for sharing as an appetizer. The butter chicken makes you scrape the bowl for every last drop. The naan was warm and flavorful I could not stop eating. The chicken thali is a nice meal set but I would prefer to order other dishes separately with a side of rice. This place is small inside and limited on tables so I would definitely try to beat the dinner rush and come early or order take out. There is plenty of parking with a free parking garage near by. The service was a little slow because there was only one server that was serving dishes and taking orders/payments-- he was hardworking though and very kind! There is another location opening in Livermore soon. I will be back for the butter chicken and warm naan!

Garlic cilantro naan

As soon as our group of five walked into Aama's Kitchen, our noses signaled that we were at the right place. A nice aroma of spices and herbs permeated the air. The owner gave us a warm welcome and handed us the menus. After I asked him for suggestions, he recommended we order momos and Khasi Ko Pakku- goat meat marinated in aromatic spices cooked on low flame and garnished with seasonal fresh herbs. We took his suggestions and requested the chili momos and the Jhol momos, plus the goat meat dish, paneer tiki masala and the Gobi Manchurian, with some butter naan and garlic cilantro naan. When the food came, everything looked and smelled so good. The momos were great, especially the chili momos, even though at medium spicy it made my nose dripped. The goat meat was a bit tough to chew, but it was incredibly flavorful with the spices. The naans were perfect with the paneer tiki masala. We washed our foods down with some really thick mango lassis and masala chai that has a hint of cardamom. For dessert we had the pistachio and mango kulfi (hand made ice cream), and the incredibly warm and satisfying rice pudding. The owner checked in on us regularly and asked for feedback. This is a very cozy restaurant, with great food and service, so we will be back.

Nepali thali
Sintu R.

Their Nepali thali has amazing dal and gulab jamun. Their momos have thin skins, just the way I prefer. Only their chai felt "can be improved". The service was quick and friendly. The place felt a little small ish though. Although we would go again for the food.

Gobi Manchurian
Briggitte L.

This cute and comfortable restaurant in downtown Hayward is a gem. I especially like the Gobi Manchurian, the Butter Chicken, and the Coconut Chicken. My dining companions have also championed the Biryanis and Momos. Sometimes you do have to flag down the server, but they are always friendly and responsive.

Goat lunch combo

Came in close to 12pm on a Wednesday and there was one party of 2 in the restaurant. Ordered the goat lunch combo and my friend got the lamb combo. The food took a long time to come out, past 12:30. After the meal, I felt content and not full, although I didn't eat much of my rice and I barely ate the pickled veggies (it's just not for me). Nothing was amazing and the goat was a little tough. Not sure if I'd come back on my own but if friends wanted to come, I wouldn't be opposed to it unless I was in a rush. Service was very attentive. There was only one server and it was really empty. Bathroom was bright and clean.

Oily Butter Chicken
Antoinette T.

I hate writing bad reviews, but I gave this place two chances. Just to be clear, this review is based on delivery orders, not dine-in service. After seeing so many rave reviews about their butter chicken, I decided to try it along with basmati rice and garlic and cheese naan. Unfortunately, none of it was good. Everything lacked flavor to the point where I actually stopped eating for a second to make sure I wasn't sick everything tasted flat and oily. The butter chicken had tons of oil floating on top, and even after stirring it, it just separated again. The pieces of chicken were tiny and swimming in oil, not sauce. This was my first time trying the butter chicken, but my second time ordering from Aama's overall, and both times were disappointing. Sadly, I won't be ordering again

Jhol Chicken Momo
Katie T.

The food here is packed with delicious flavor! We ordered the butter chicken with garlic naan, chili chicken momos & jhol chicken momos. We were slightly early for pick up, but the staff was very kind, offering us to have a seat at one of the empty tables. Butter Chicken (9/10) - full of flavor with a super creamy and velvety texture! Pairs really well with their garlic cilantro naan, the bread really helps to soak up some of the oil. Chili momo (9/10) - juicy chicken dumplings coated in a thick, sweet and sour sauce. Once again, the flavors on this were incredible - don't be intimidated by the chili in the name, this is very mildly spicy! The chili sauce has more of a bell pepper flavor than spiciness. Jhol momo (8/10) - soupy, warming with a slight kick. The special soup is slightly tangy, delicious with those plump, meaty dumplings!

Amazing food. Enjoyed everything we ordered. A little of a Wait so bring good company. Friendly service. Street parking. Thanks!

There are plenty of Indian restaurants in Fremont where we live, but since our favorite go-to place closed, we've yet to find another that perfectly pleases us both. He's a vegetarian. I'm not. He likes heavy spice and some heat. My tastes run towards mildly spiced chicken curries. If you are considering Shahi Darbar based on Yelp reviews and photos, you will not be disappointed. There is ample parking in front as the restaurant is in a strip mall without a lot of evening traffic. Outside is brightly lit and inside, the dining area is large, so there is plenty of room between tables. Even though there were many people there and music overhead we could still hear each other and converse. There are tables and booths. It's clean and bright. Our server was attentive and friendly. The menu is extensive! It was hard to choose, but I ordered chicken tikka masala because I don't see it offered at too many other restaurants, not the way butter chicken is.. it was wonderful! The server asked our preferred spice levels and the kitchen delivered. Husband ordered palak paneer and loved that the spinach wasn't over creamed or over blended (he doesn't like when the spinach is no longer recognizable as spinach and the palak looks like green baby food - this is not the case here). The palak paneer was perfect. We had veg pakora as an appetizer. It was SO good. Since we were celebrating a birthday and had cake waiting at home, we took home a lot of leftovers, which made the next night's dinner at home pretty epic too. For such a nice place, the prices are reasonable. There is a full bar. I had my back to it and didn't see it until we were leaving. I'm not sure if it is open all the time or not. When we return, likely for our anniversary next month, I might order a drink. It was about a 25 minute drive for us, so we won't be able to make this our new go-to, but you can be sure we will return as soon and as often as the opportunity comes along again.

This exceptional establishment has become my go-to destination for experiencing the genuine flavors and aromas that transport me back to cherished memories of home-cooked meals from years past. I discovered Flavor of India several years ago, and since that initial visit, I have never once been disappointed--not with the food, not with the service, and not with the overall experience. What makes this restaurant truly special is the remarkable consistency they maintain. Every time I walk through their doors, I know I'm in for an authentic culinary journey that honors traditional North Indian cooking methods and recipes. The heart and soul of Flavor of India are undoubtedly Pawan and Gurudev, the dedicated staff members who don't just serve customers--they welcome guests like family. Their warm hospitality creates an atmosphere that goes far beyond a typical dining experience. They remember regular customers, take time to explain dishes, make thoughtful recommendations, and genuinely care about ensuring everyone feels comfortable and well-cared-for. This personal touch transforms a simple meal into something meaningful and memorable. The restaurant's physical space itself contributes significantly to the overall ambiance. Abundant natural light floods the dining area, creating a bright, welcoming environment that feels both refreshing and inviting. Unlike dimly lit restaurants where you strain to see your food, Flavor of India's well-lit space allows you to fully appreciate the vibrant colors of the dishes--the rich reds of tandoori preparations, the golden hues of curries, and the fresh greens of chutneys and garnishes. Adding another layer to the sensory experience, the restaurant often plays bhajans--devotional songs that provide a spiritual and cultural soundtrack to your meal. These traditional hymns are a true blessing, creating an atmosphere that feels authentically connected to Indian culture and heritage. The combination of soulful music with the aromatic spices wafting from the kitchen creates a multisensory experience that engages not just your taste buds but your entire being. Whether you're seeking the comfort of familiar childhood flavors or exploring North Indian cuisine for the first time, Flavor of India delivers on every front. The authenticity of the food, the warmth of the staff, the inviting atmosphere, and the thoughtful cultural touches all combine to create a dining experience that nourishes both body and soul. This is more than just a restaurant--it's a place where tradition, hospitality, and exceptional food come together perfectly.

We have our favorites from their menu but they host a variety of curries, proteins, and small bites/street eats. Panipuri - crispy balls ready to be loaded up with lentils, delicious fillings and sauces, these mouthfuls are great for starters but you'll find yourself eating these throughout the meal not only because you're hungry but also because you just can't get enough of them. Samosas - hearty fried dumplings packed with potatoes that are perfect for eating on the go. Great by itself or with sauces and curry, these hot pockets are a burst of flavor that will stuff you up. Goat curry - full of flavor and a bit on the spicy end for those sensitive to capsaicin. Pair with naan or rice and you'll be golden, from the tastes you'll be experience as well as the heat! Butter paneer/chicken - the sweetness of the curry is subtle but the creaminess is what will win you over. Smothered over chicken or paneer, this is a delicious palate pleaser. Biryani - solid staple, flavorful and cooked perfectly. Great by itself or paired with some curry or a grilled entree. Salmon - delicious but a bit overcooked for my liking but in a pinch, omega-3s can be supplemented in this meal. Overall, Phulkari satisfies our craving for Indian curry any day and it's great knowing that the experience will consistently be a good one anytime those cravings come up. We haven't had a chance to dine in but would welcome the opportunity to visit for a sit down. For now, they're still our go-to for Indian cuisine when we are in the area. Unsure of where you'll end up settling for food or not having the time or space to cook an elaborate meal packed with flavors and aromas? Phulkari pulls through as the restaurant of choice!

EDIT: both of us had some stomach issues following our meal. Not horribly sick, but stomach aches…read moreand gurgling and stuff, general discomfort. Phulkari is under new ownership! New menu, new prices, new staff. Upon walking in they asked us if we would like to sit outside after seeing my service dog. I said no thank you (as it was chilly out) and they didn't push the issue at all, just sat us. They served us water immediately. This is a small thing but the water glasses were easy to hold and lightweight and I liked that. Anyways, they checked on us several times while we looked at the new menu, encouraging us to ask questions if we wanted. Rice is complimentary with each curry-type dish. Our food came quickly. When they noticed we had eaten half our rice, they repeatedly offered us rice and we said no thanks. Then they brought it anyways. We didn't mind, they were very eager to give good service and to be present. They refilled our glasses once they got low. At the end of the meal they came over and discussed the food with us, let us know about the new ownership and how they've changed the menu, and that they are using all fresh ingredients. They seem very eager to provide good food and service. The dishes were both flavorful. The vegetables in them were fresh tasting. Neither was at all spicy-- afterwards they let us know that they are doing all the dishes mild (Castro valley lol) so if you like your Indian food spicy you will need to tell them explicitly when you order.

It was both our first times eating here. You order at the counter, get a buzzer and seat yourself. We picked a nice window seat and I had a nice cup of chai ($2 with one free refill). Chai was delicious. Spicy and rich. Perfect for a chilly afternoon. Our food took a little longer than expected to arrive but it was worth it. My husband said it's the best chicken tandoori he's ever had. It was perfectly seasoned with a great smoky char. The goat curry was phenomenal! It was rich and the depth of flavor was perfect with naan. We ordered garlic naan but I think plain naan would've complimented the curry better . The garlic naan was a little overpowering. All that came to about $45 including tax and tip for two people . Parking was smooth since they have a pretty generous parking lot. I'd recommend this place for family meals and lunch meetups.

It's a self service place where you order & pay for your food, pick up your utensils and they call out your number for you to pick up your food when it's ready. It's more a takeout place than a full fledged restaurant. We ordered the chicken leg kebab (5/5), beef seekh kebab (4/5), chicken seekh kebab (3/5), achari gosht (goat) (3/5) since it was rather oily with some weird cuts of the meat and butter naan (5/5). The folks at the counter were courteous and welcoming. Overall, a place we'd come to again to sample their other offerings.
