I like stopping by at Kabul Express Kabob before I see a movie, since the food court is right next to the movie theater. The lamb at Kabul Express Kabob is really good and I appreciate being able to get lamb on-the-bone at an affordable price. I also really like their rice. I came here to buy food and let the employee know before ordering that I have a gluten allergy. As soon as I walked in, I told the staff that I cannot have bread, gluten, or wheat. I even explained that gluten is found in wheat and bread because I wanted to make sure there was no confusion. The employee went to the back to ask if the meat and rice were gluten-free, and they told her yes. When I opened my food, there was bread inside the container. I brought it back to the counter and explained that I couldn't eat it because it had been contaminated. The employee then told me that I never said not to put bread on my food. That was frustrating because the very first thing I said when I walked in was that I could not have bread, gluten, or wheat. Instead of remaking my meal properly, he grabbed the bread off my food with his bare hands and told me, "You can eat it." I explained that once the bread touched my food, it was cross-contaminated and could make me very sick. He then said he would make me a new one, but he simply took my original container to the back and brought back what appeared to be the same food with the bread removed. I asked for a refund multiple times because I no longer felt safe eating the food, but they refused. In the end, I threw the food away because I didn't trust that it had been remade or handled safely. The lack of understanding about food allergies and cross-contamination was very concerning. People with celiac disease or serious gluten allergies rely on restaurants to take food allergies seriously. Based on my experience, I would not feel comfortable eating here again. read more

QABILI PALAU - lamb shank tender, flavorful along with their special rice with raisin and candied carrots. Delicious! CHAPLI KEBAB - ground beef that's nicely seasoned, soft, with a nice crust and light crunch from the seeds/spices Both orders came with a green salad, Afghan bread, and a spicy cilantro, jalapeno-vinegar based sauce that just kicks everything up a notch! I haven't been to the Southland Food Court in years! But we were in the area and I remembered the food court has actual food places. We were really there for the Indian food, but my husband never had Afghan food (the things you take for granted when living in the East Bay!) so we tried the Mantoo dish. We didn't know what to expect, but it was good. I don't think it's something I am used to, but it looked good and tasted fine. Initially there wasn't anyone at the counter, but after we pressed the bell someone came by. Our food was made quickly and this is a place we would try again. What I don't like about malls are that the food courts all have the same generic chain restaurants or else "fancier" places that are all run of the mill. Southland is unique in that it has actual restaurants that serve real food. Hopefully Southland will fare better in the near future and continue to allow these smaller businesses to rent. read more

After a long drained day from work, I told myself I needed lamb plate to fill back my energy. Here I was at Kabul express kabob again. Never be more satisfied than this. I felt like the owner took my review as suggestion. Today the plate was filled with raisins on top. The flavors were very tasty. He gave me two garlic green sauce with the meal. I've ordered food from here a few times and I've had some mixed experiences. First time, they were really busy I had to wait 40 minutes for my food. The second time, they tell me they need 25 minutes to cook it - I'm 5 minutes late and the owner literally calls me 4 times and texts me repeatedly stating that my food is getting cold and to pick it up asap. His repeated calls and texts were unsettling. Overall, the food is good - but not great. The chicken kabob is typically 5 pieces and they serve a relatively small quantity of rice. Weve tried places in Oakland, Fremont, San Jose and even Sacramento. Who knew the best option was at Southland Mall, just 15 minutes from our house. We got what we always get at Afghan restaurants. My wife got the chopli kabob and I had the qabili palau and added an order of the bolani. Everything was insanely good. The spicing was perfect, the serving sizes were generous, the prices super reasonable and the gentleman working behind the counter was delightful. This was the worst experience. I ordered a chicken over rice plate that totaled and tax of $17.39. The cook was talking on her cell phone and moving around preparing the food, the cook used no gloves but her hands to prepare my plate so, I asked for a refund and was refunded the meal without the taxes and their reason was "the government took the taxes and we have nothing to do with refunding the taxes". That was the most ridiculous remark I have ever heard of. This place just reopened a week ago but now I'm wondering why it was closed in the first place. read more
