This is a no nonsense fast food joint that serves a decent plate lunch. THE FOOD: BBQ CHICKEN PLATE LUNCH The chicken was tender and marinated as expected. It came with the typical two scoops of white rice and a scoop of macaroni salad. The average price of a plate lunch was $10 or less. They have picnic tables out in front for patrons to sit and eat with a view of the parking lot. Not the most romantic setting. This place is definitely cheap eats. read more

Normally I wouldn't even consider eating here but I was starving, on a time crunch and didn't wanna wait 45 minutes to have ramen next door. Since I needed to eat, I just picked this place without even looking on Yelp or thinking about it. Shame on me and I can't blame anyone else but myself for this experience. This take out restaurant is outside of Don Quijote. They have a wall full of pictures of items on their menu. Portions are large like their photos. I think the pictures look better than the actual dish themselves though. They accept cash and major credit cards. When you check in, you get 10% off your purchase of $10.00 or more. I ordered the regular size Loco Moco with all rice. Hard to screw up Loco Moco but apparently it can be done. The gravy was oily and tasted Chinese along with the beef patties. The eggs were a little greasy too. Thank goodness for Tabasco, Sriracha and Black Pepper! I ate a few bites and threw away the rest of the plate. Usually, my vacation days are planned around food. But this time, our schedules were quite packed from meeting friends & shopping for coffee & mac nuts to bring back home. After spending some money at Don Quiote, we found this place, AAA Local BBQ outside of the market, next to several other eateries. We decided to try it based on the words Local BBQ. Didn't quite work out well. This visit was on 9/16/15 First, the place is run by people from China (I can tell by their accent as the cashier and cook spoke to each other) This alone told me it's not authentic. Plus, the young girl (cashier) rendered herself pretty useless. When I asked her what is Mochiko Chicken, she took a toothpick, poked at a piece to show me, said "here!" then popped it into her mouth. Wow, that was helpful! Luckily, there was a guy waiting for his order that explained things for me. The menus posted outside did not have any descriptions, so I asked what's in a combo. She turned around & shouted to the cook, what's a combo? He yelled back and pointed at the menu behind the glass and said "here!" He was losing his patience I assume. I checked in on Yelp and there was a 10% off deal. There was also a Yelp sign at the counter offering the same deal. When I showed her my check-in, she asked, "what's that?" I flipped their sign around to show her, at which point she asked the cook again what's Yelp? He responded loudly, " why are you asking me that question!?" and mumbled something, probably how he's going to kick her ass after they close. Whatever it was, it worked and she took 10% off. We ended up ordering a small BBQ chicken and a combo, which included BBQ beef, short ribs and chicken. Both came with rice and mac salad. The chicken plate was good, as the chicken was tender and has decent flavor. The combo: The beef was fatty, chewy and low quality. There was only one small piece of rib w/ little meat, and the chicken was the same as the other order, so not too bad. The mac salad was average, nowhere near the awesome ones I had on other islands. Overall, we were full and didn't get sick. But we would never come back here on our next visit to Honolulu. I grabbed a mini mochiko chicken lunch plate from AAA during my 30 min lunch break (ha!). It came out pretty fast and the mochiko chicken was decent, not the best I've ever had, but it fit the bill. THe lady behind the register was a little weird. She was wearing sunglasses (maybe she was hung over?....it wasn't like the sun was shining in her face). She was also a little difficult to understand so I had to stand by the window instead of sitting on the benches, since I didn't want to miss my order. read more

I decided to eat at AAA Local BBQ after shopping at Don Quiote, but somehow most of the restaurants there are not that good, including here. If you want more for your money, better to go L&L hawaiian BBQ or some other local fast food. I ordered the 3 items seafood platter for $8, which was ok, but the portions were small: 3 item Seafood plate - 2 1/2 stars - for $8, I got grilled mahimahi, ahi and shrimp. The Ahi was dry, not too tasty except maybe a little fishy. The Mahimahi was soft and tasty, but I got such a small piece, smaller than my palm, that all I got was a taste of it, and the shrimp was ok, but a little chewy and old tasting. My son usually loves to eat shrimp, but after one bite, he threw it away. I guess it's ok if you want something right after shopping at Don Quiote, but just a short drive to L&L at ward, you'll get tastier and more food with your rice. There wasn't enough taste in the seafood and so much rice that we had to buy a miso butterfish in Don Quiote to add taste and to fill with the starch. The mac salad was average. Service - 5 stars - the girl was very nice and friendly, and gave us extra forks, water and napkins for us to split the food. Service here is way better than any of the L&Ls I've been to. I guess I need to give it another chance and buy the full mahimahi plate so I can see if it compares to L&L. read more

Ordered my Easter pan of fried rice and decided to take a chance on this place because they say they're open every day. Lady in charge seemed non plussed and a tad arrogant about bragging that they "are always opened, even on Christmas and New Years." Just for about 20 people, I purchased a medium pan with no onions. It was set for Easter morning at 9 o'clock and the woman assured me that it would be ready with no onions. I prepaid and took my receipt home. When I arrived this morning at 9:15, she looked at me surprised and then sheepishly, and quickly went into the side and asked the man to fry up my medium pan of fried rice. So much for the preordering. She smiled and apologized. I prepaid for this mistake otherwise I would've left. In fact, if I hadn't paid for it I would've ordered it and then walked away. I had no choice then to wait here like a dumbass for a pan of fried rice which could've turned out to be quite lucrative for this woman had she not screwed me up. Happy Easter to me. I had also told her that I needed several containers of mustard which, had I not been so upset, I would've remembered to ask for. But was given none anyway. Do not buy or cater from this place. Nasty! And I told her that I had to be somewhere at 10 o'clock. So much for service from AAA local BBQ. Crappy service. I sit on a nearby bench, disappointed. I'm posting two pictures of their "fried rice" attached to this review. The 20 people at the party laughed so hard when I removed the foil. It was soggy rice with canned corn and soy sauce. And it was stink and reeking of five spice. UGH!!! What the bloody hell. The flavor was horrible. The party goers actually laughed at this dish. I got just shoyu and canned corn on rice. My pan of fried rice had NO MEAT whatsoever, just corn and rice!!! NO CHAR SIU. No Spam. No bacon. No flavor. I called them back after I got home to complain and the woman gasped and seemed shocked (as though she realized that they had made another error), "Ohhhhhh," and then recovered stating that their fried rice "does not have meat in it." I have never had meatless fried rice in my entire life and I'm as old as dirt. Again, do not buy from this place. I am so livid!!! I have a big family that likes to entertain. I have come here a few times. I had mini spicy BBQ chicken which was big enough to be one meal! I also had adobo pork. The pork was so tender and flavorful. I was very disappointed I checked Yelp for the menu and found the Combo C (Seafood Combo with your choice of meat) sounding good for lunch. I had my sister pick it up and deliver it to me at my job and when I opened my plate I was shocked!!! It comes with one scoop of mac salad. Overall everything tasted pretty good, not spectacular. Pork adobo definitely did not taste very Filipino-style but it wasn't bad. I felt like I got what I paid for and the portion size was great! I did not go wrong in buying a last minute dinner from them. Food came out extremely fast which was a plus. Quick wait time of under 10 minutes. Chicken freshly made . I could tell since it was lava hot. Nice light batter a bit on the sweet side. Chicken hot and juicy, not dry in the least. 3 stars Pork Adobo had an okay flavor but many pieces mostly dry and hard. One of the nice things about volunteering at Kawaii Kon is that it is held at the Honolulu Convention Center which is within walking distance of a lot of options, even ones with weird names designed to be first in phone books (who uses those?), for food. That being said, I opted to come here for a simple and quick take out dinner of Chicken Katsu. Compared to other katsu places, the portions felt fair but a bit small and didn't quite match their pictures in terms of having lettuce. Cashier was rude! Bad customer service for a decent bbq place. Ordered a "burger combo" and other plate lunches thinking it would come with a drink.. or if the cashier was doing her job instead of making pretty she could have offered a drink but nope! The prices seem high at first, but when you get your food you realize it's so worth it. Generous portion and you can tell the cook is a pro who also takes pride in his work. The lady taking orders is very nice and efficient too. Had the spam & eggs with rice for $6.29 and everything came out perfect. As in, absolutely no sloppiness or imperfections in how the eggs, spam, or rice were done! Zero! No crusty rice portions, no burnt or uneven egg or spam portions, everything exactly evenly cooked and delicious! Very impressed. FANTASTIC little find! We saw it as we were driving back to the hotel. The garlic shrimp was phenomenal! They were out of a couple of items (Hawaiian bread was one of them) so I was a little bummed out about that, but the people who worked there more than made up for it with friendliness (and a little extra Mac salad) :) If you get an opportunity to go to this place... I don't know if I will be eating at this place for awhile. After people were complaining about how long the food was taking and things like that. What I don't appreciate the fact that if you can't cover your plate correctly, why serve it? From this, the Kalbi was a little raw and not cooked well enough. My mochiko chicken was ok, but the brown rice was overkill and I almost could not eat it all. I was like..come on now, that is a lot of brown rice and less meat. If I was to return to this place again, one suggestion would that they will be more specific and clear about the pricing as well as the scoops of rice, if I remember it was no charge for the brown rice substitute as well as the French fries as well. With brown rice too at no extra charge, no less! Eggs pretty much any way you like 'em, with a picture menu of the different cooking methods, in case you needed to know what "over-medium" stands for. So the best part? Breakfast available ANY TIME. ($1 more after breakfast hours.) But a minor fee to chow down on bacon in the middle of the day. I've visited AAA a few times and have been overall satisfied. Everyone has always been super polite and friendly so I'd give 5 stars on service. Food was hefty portions, so again 5 stars on value. taste for me was pretty good, not necessarily great. I ordered the BBQ chicken and it had less flavor than most places Ive tried. Probably even healthier since it's not drenched in Hawaiian BBQ but mmmmm sooo good when it is! They DO have a large menu so I have a lot more to try. MY GOD. I don't know why I haven't discovered this place earlier. After doing some shopping at Don Quijote, I was super hungry and decided to try this restaurant on the way out. I thought, hey why not? I ordered the garlic chicken and mochiko chicken combo. The mochiko chicken was pretty good, but I was blown away by their garlic chicken. IT WAS THE BEST GARLIC CHICKEN I'VE EVER HAD IN MY LIFE. And I don't say that a lot. As a garlic fanatic, I've had garlic chicken plates from all over downtown and none of them really were garlicy enough for me or have really been that great, in my opinion. I'm still not over this one place downtown that had this deep fried, sweet flavored chicken and had the audacity to call it garlic chicken. My girlfriend, whose also health conscious, ordered the cheeseburger and fries combo (ironic right?). Apparently, they make their hamburgers homemade with 95% lean meat. She enjoyed it, especially because it didn't leave a messy nasty mayonnaisey on her hands like a lot of burgers do. They gave a pretty good amount of fries too. I am personally not a big fan of the outdoor food court environment that much, but it was definitely worth it for their relatively cheap prices.
