Takeout lunch in Honolulu, Hawaii... Since today is Fish Friday, I looked for seafood for my mom's meal. AAA Local BBQ has been on my list of places to try, even though it's been here for years. Located in the strip of businesses to the left of Don Quijote Kaheka, AAA Local BBQ is between U Choice In and Hokkaido Ramen Santouka. I parked in the 15-minute stall, right in front. It's tight, but convenient. I could have parked across Poki Street in the covered parking, but I thought I'd be quick. There's outdoor dining, but the picnic tables have no shade. There are also birds, dust, and car exhaust fumes... it's better to go home and get away from the sketchy people. I got the Garlic Ahi plate and the Garlic Shrimp Plate. I liked the Garlic Shrimp a lot because it had a very thin layer of batter which added a slight crunch and flavor to the peeled Shrimp. At first, I didn't like the Ahi because it was a tad bit fishy. However, I used the tarter sauce which improved it, but didn't cover up the dry pieces of fish. Overall, it was an okay lunch. The rice was alright. It was my first time here. Me and my friend were just dead hungry so we picked a random place. I got the loco moco and he got the mochiko chicken. I'm going to stay honest ... my loco moco had virtually no flavor. The only slight "flavor" I got was from the gravy which tasted like a pinch of salt AND like whoever made it might have been wearing strong lotion on their hands as they made it. But I will say the Mac salad wasn't bad but the noodles seem off but regardless effort was put into making so that gets a C+. I liked my friends Mochiko chicken much more but I still felt like it was missing something.... Maybe a sauce to dip it ? Some spice ? Service was average. I do see many stop here at various times of the day though i thought that breakfast would be perfect as they open early daily at 6am and with lots of parking provided along with Don Quijote it would be an easy stop to pick up something to start my day. Breakfast is quite simple with either a plate or omelette and i just wanted a simple Portuguese sausage, scrambled eggs and rice which for $8.99 came with a generous scoop of rice and five pieces of Portuguese sausage was a great deal and was made quite fast. The staff is your average friendly crew though i could see a man cutting meat right in the back sink without any gloves that really got me concerned and a bit of an eww moment and more of wondering what else are they not doing. This place is located at the strip of eateries outside of Don Quijote on Kaheka. They have been here forever, but it was my first time trying it out. They serve mostly plate lunches and breakfast plates. I went with the mochiko chicken plate $12.99. They gave a lot of chicken, so you get a bang for your buck. I stumbled upon AAA Local Barbecue here at the Don Quixote store complex since it was a recommended breakfast spot from my dental hygienist. True story. My dental hygienist asked me how my day was going and I mentioned that I was planning on getting breakfast at the nearby Jack-in-the-Box. And so she recommended me to come to this restaurant/kiosk to check things out because she has heard pretty good things. I said all right whatever. And so after my dental appointment that day, I basically headed over to this restaurant. I never happen to be in this area, but on this day in January 2025 it was meant to be I guess. I walked from my dentist office on Punahou Street down to the Don Quixote shop, which was about 10 minutes walk or so. It was nice to not have to wait for the bus and it's also 2 blocks away from Ala Moana shopping center. If you're reading this, this shop is a good place to get breakfast before heading to Ala Moana shopping center. Why haven't I seen this before? I was here around 9:30am and they had a board of what they had to offer. Most of their breakfast platters were around $10 already, so there's really no cheap eats specials, but just an option that's not Ala Moana shopping center before 10am. It's a nice chill place to be, although there's not much place to sit down and eat. The overall experience here at this AAA Local Barbecue restaurant was like an L&L Hawaiian Barbeque. They make local favorites and serve all day breakfast for anyone and everyone who loves local comfort food served everyday of the week. My experience here was short but effective. I probably spent about 20 minutes here with 5 minutes of being indecisive and eventually ordering. The service was friendly enough but good and nice. I basically ordered one of their breakfast platters for around $10 and I added a side order of french fries that cost over $5. I found this place to be pretty good and yet typical as well. It was nice to be within walking distance from Ala Moana while not being in the mall itself. There was no real ambiance since it's not really a restaurant but a take out window without seats for anyone to sit. For the most part though, AAA Local Barbecue is a good spot for anyone who enjoys Hawaii local comfort food at any time of the day. Their menu is typical of anywhere you'd go on Oahu really. The prices here are generally on par with what you'd find elsewhere. My experience here was basically being indecisive, ordering, picking up, paying, and leaving. They accept major credit cards as well as cash. As far as parking goes, the entire complex has a generous amount of parking. But as crazy as the traffic coming in and out of the parking lot is on a daily basis, your best bet would be to arrive early enough to find parking or anytime that's not lunch or the dinner rush to secure the best parking. Or you could find parking in Ala Moana shopping center and walk 2 blocks over. If you are like me, route 7 comes by the area but you'd need to walk a block up from Kapiolani Blvd or route 1 and walk from South Beretania street. However you get here, it's a good place to have breakfast, lunch, or dinner. There's always uber and lyft to help you get here fast and easy. I've passed by this plate lunch joint many times when I was heading to U-Choice In for my rice cake fix, but what led me here was due to my Yelp Buddy - Bruddah Jace T. who had posted numerous pics of his ono looking plate lunches from this joint called - "AAA Local BBQ". Made my way down to the Don Quijote (Kaheka location), and you can find AAA Local BBQ on the outside entrance area of Don Quijote - (as there are many eatery businesses sitting on the outside entrance of DQ). I already knew what I came for, so I really didn't bother to look at their menu. When it was time for me to place my order, I told the nice lady that I wanted a Mochiko Chicken plate. What can I say about the grub? Surprisingly, my Mochiko Chicken plate was much better than I had expected! Yeah, I still have my all time FAVORITE plate lunch joint for Mochiko Chicken in da Manoa Marketplace, but AAA Local BBQ also did a pretty good job on their version of their Mochiko Chicken (as far as taste goes). The price for their Mochiko Chicken plate at AAA Local BBQ was much cheaper than my favorite plate lunch joint in Manoa, but as for their chicken pieces (volume), my favorite plate lunch joint in the Manoa Marketplace still wins hands down!!! One of the takeout food places attached to Don Quijote, Kaheka location. I decided to stop here becuase they have crinkle fries. I love crinkle fries! I ordered a BBQ burger combo and 5 pc lumpia w/diet Pepsi with extra ice. The burger was a good size, and was topped with mayonnaise, lettuce and tomato. But there was something odd with it. It wasn't quite right. The patty was way too soft and lacking any bbq flavor. I tried to figure it out as I continued to eat. Finished half and gave up. D- I love crinkle fries, but these were simply the worst. They looked like they were prepped for a photo shoot, so inviting and delicious. WRONG WRONG WRONG! The fries were 5 days under a heat lamp stale and completely inedible. Every single one. Believe me, I tried every piece! F The diet Pepsi was lacking of carbonation and went completely flat within 10 minutes. As for the extra ice, didn't get it. D- (for quenching my thirst with the first three sips, at least.) The vegetable lumpia are not very big, but it was hot and crispy and very nice. The vinegar sauce was slightly spicy and wonderful. It's also located in a convenient area, right next to Don Quijote, a Japanese chain store, so after you do your shopping, you can come grab a bite! There aren't seating in the area though, so you'll have to bring your food somewhere else. I got the mini Loco Moco ($8.49) which comes with 1 scoop of rice and 1 scoop of macaroni salad, but I asked for the rice to be substituted with another scoop of macaroni salad which they were totally fine with. I'm not even finished with my food and I'm writing a review. Here's why, the service was excellent; the food wasn't. The woman at the front was pleasant and efficient. However, the food left something to be desired. The patties on my locomoco were plain Jane frozen store-bought. if you're charging $10 that's your choice to go cheap but I'd step it up a notch and charge a little more, say 14.95. I'm a local boy who grew up on Maui and there's nothing better than fresh homemade hamburger patties for locomoco. Although the portion was generous, the curry was really bland and also had pulled pork mixed in it - which was unexpected. The chicken katsu itself was just ok but needed salt. They literally gave me 4 small rib pieces and 1 piece of bbq chicken - very small portions esp in comparison to the chicken katsu curry meal. It is actually a really good restaurant right outside of Don Quiote! It is amazing how many options they offer here! Stir fry, Hawaiin, burgers, fries, you name it! The food is also served very quickly. I have been here twice. I left this place satiated. The only thing is that the tables outside the restaurant are kind of dirty since it gets so much traffic. There are also a lot of homeless people hanging out here. I don't know who is responsible for cleaning this common area, but the tables and chairs could definitely use some Clorox. read more

When it comes to local plate lunch places, one shouldn't expect much because they are what they are. Supposed to be greasy, filling, local style comfort food, but this place is mediocre at best. I regretted giving them a try, but I was hungry and it was there. I ordered a local classic favorite, the Loco Moco. It is white Calrose style rice with 2 basic hamburger patties (the type you get in a bulk frozen pack) on top, brown gravy over it all and finally topped with 2 sunny side up eggs. If you aren't from Hawaii or have never tried it, you wouldn't understand how something it could be considered comfort food, but it is and perfect if you have a hang over. The dish sounds simple enough, but some how it just was horrible from top to bottom. Also, I assumed that my eggs would be sunny side up, but they came over medium which looses the addition of the runny egg in the dish. Maybe it was just that day, but considering how simple of a dish it is I doubt it. I like to give places second chances, but I wont with this place. I've never ate from this place before, so I decided to try it out. I ordered the bbq cheeseburger deluxe with fries combo. The total came out to around $11. I went home to eat and found out there was no burger patty in my burger! Like the deluxe part was there (lettuce, tomato, onions), the cheese was there, the burger buns were there, but no burger patty in sight. I have been eating here almost every morning for the past few days as I have a conference in Waikiki. They open early 6am which is perfect as I have to be at the convention center by 7am. The clientele is mostly regulars, same 7-8 people every morning around the same time. I always order the bacon breakfast, overeasy eggs, and rice or hash brown. The bacon (5 pieces) are perfectly cooked everytime and so are the eggs. If I go early, I get my food quickly but the later I go, the longer the wait is as they get busy as people coming in and people making phone orders. They have about 7 cleanish benches fronting the store which if convenient to eat and go. The price is very reasonable. My plate cost $6.99 + tax which is a great deal with all this inflation everywhere else. This will be my go-to place for the next few more days. read more

This is my go to place for a quick hot breakfast. Been here a few times and usually have eggs and bacon with brown rice. Love the fact that a small hole in the wall like this has brown rice and the bacon is nice and crispy. You order at the window and eat at one of the picnic style tables in front. Today I had 3 eggs with 1 scoop of brown rice for $6.03. I'll take that price for home cooking all day. They also have daily specials with 2 eggs, rice and your choice of 2 meats for $6.95. Triple A is your spot... located out front of the Makaloa Don Quijote and parking is usually plentiful in front, or the parking structure east of the lot and surprisingly street parking is offered around the area... seating is shared with the other businesses and on a first come, first serve but a spot is usually open... bring wipes if you have... the seating is outside so look before you sit ;) The dishes here aren't the greatest ever, BUT they do have their own flare on a few local favs... The Beef Stew... I can taste the spicy flavor they added... the spicy is more flavor and not hot spicy, but if you bring your own chili water, go for it! The Mochiko Chicken is average tasting but they give a very decent portion for a mini and I'm sure the regular plate is well portioned also... Plus side to this place is this is one of the few places that actually has brown rice (think $0.50 extra) and toss greens as an option... The prices have gone up since we came last time, but that was to be expected, Ordered the BBQ combo plate, which was BBQ Beef, BBQ Chicken, and Short Rib combo. After tax, it was about $19. Came with 2 scoops of rice and a scoop of mac salad. Some type of cabbage/onion slaw was added as well. It was a piece of boneless chicken thigh, a thin piece of beef/steak, and one 3 bone short rib. The chicken was pretty decent. Still somewhat tender and had a teri or soy glaze. The beef/steak was definitely over cooked for my taste, but still had that same glaze, so flavor was okay. The short rib still had enough fat still on it that made it enjoyable, but still a bit chewy. Is it gourmet? Nope. Is it plate lunch worthy? Eh? Was I able to split the dish with my wife? You betcha! That made this worth the value and therefore the 3 stars. It's good if you are there, but not worth dealing with all of the cars and traffic in the parking lot. Sometimes depending on when you go, you may have difficulty finding parking but they share the same parking lot as Don Quiote- you can just go around a few times & I'm sure a stall will open up. I usually get the pork adobo & garlic chicken combo. It's super yummy and consistent in taste. I don't like mac salad, so usually I order it with all rice. My friend that does order mac salad doesn't like how they have raw onions & celery bits in it. I'm the type of person where when I like something, I'm solely devoted to it... so honestly I haven't tried anything else but my usual!
