AA Bar & Grill has a unique ambiance... it's an unremarkable, tattered location. From what I've heard from the locals, many are put off from visiting this Bar & Grill because of the "suspicious" location and storefront. It's located across the street from the town jailhouse here in Eureka, CA and one would certainly not expect some of perhaps the best steaks in all of Northern California to be served up in this "deceptively seedy looking location". The locals seem put back because of this, but my thinking was, at least local law enforcement should be readily available should they be needed. Time to focus on the steak...I ordered the...I think it was a 23oz. Porterhouse steak, sorry I really can't remember. But rest assured this steak was super delicious, cooked "almost" to a perfectly grilled medium well, don't hate you rare and medium rarers, this is how I like my steak cooked, I thought it could have been cooked pinch longer on each side to reach perfection. But it was definitely in the "get down on it, gonna eat it up, this is really good, ain't about to send it back" category. It was served with a generous spread of gorgonzola butter on top AND my new ABSOLUTELY favorite accompaniment to a delicious steak dinner AND perhaps the other reason patrons love and frequent the establishment. The bar, I ordered a Bloody Mary, this turns out IMO to be one of the best drinks to sit besides a great steak dinner! But V-Ron, why did you give it only 3 stars, if you think the steaks are amazing!, you might ask. Well, the place really is kinda "shady" looking and the onion rings...the onion rings were???...Well, I ordered onion rings at the local hospital cafeteria and they were the same ones! Not that great, just barely O.K. So, this place isdefinitely worth visiting again. Don't expect a "refreshing" atmosphere, but you will get 5 star steaks and drinks, 4 star service (one of the local diners that frequents AA, was there having dinner and drinks, she helped the only server there at the bar by getting up busing our table...that was kinda cool), oh yeah and 3 star onion rings. Great "locals" lunch spot! Staff is amazing! I have never been disappointed with a meal here. The patty melt is probably my favorite, but the burgers are good too. The fried pickles are good and somewhat like Hooters but a bit more breading. The sirloin steak "butterflied" was ON POINT and YOU MUST get the buttery gorgonzola topping for the steak! SO GOOD! Beer glasses are super cold and they always have a great cider on tap. If you're lucky enough to be there before the dessert runs out, get that too! :) You won't be disappointed with the food and the prices are budget friendly. read more

on a work trip and we have been literally asking everyone in town where to go for a good place to have a steak and everyone said your restaurant. We just came in and tried to order food and a waitress at the bar kept saying to us that we had to order drinks first but in a very unprofessional way. We kept telling her that all we want to do is order food and she got very rude and kept asking if we're going to order drinks then she finally walked away from us. I have been hearing about this establishment for a long time. It's highly recommended for its steak. I'll no longer be wondering about it. Our medium rare steaks came out medium rare on the outside and Blue on the inside. Neither was this filet mignon an exceptional piece of meat. It was average in every way. Salad while we realize salad at a place like this is generally garnish, this salad could more property be called "dressing on a plate with two tomato's and croutons." Our sides however were perfect. Perfect onion rings, perfect steak fries, which to be fair, are not as easy as you'd think, steak fries have a way of being floppy and not crisp, these were the best steak fries I've had in a long time. The ambiance was that of a neighborhood bar. People were there mostly to drink, we expected that. Waitstaff were friendly, if a bit distracted and busy, it was after all Friday night at quitting time. Most of my stars here go to the waitstaff who were lovely to us given we weren't drinking in a bar. Bottom line, I'm highly unimpressed by the steaks which I've been hearing about and wondering about for years. As a non-drinker, I won't be going back, but it was a quite friendly neighborhood bar if you're looking for one. It's quite possible it could have been an off-day. We are currently affected by food shortages due to close by forest fires so this could possibly explain the lower quality beef. read more

Best steak I've had in quite a while (and getting a good steak has gotten more difficult in recent years up here). I was there on a relatively crowded night (Friday after payday, first of the month, standing room only, etc.) AND they were in the process of training a new waitress, yet the service was excellent, the staff were friendly, and the environment was not surprising. (As some have mentioned, this is a bar. Not a 'pub' or a wine bar, but an actual honest to god bar) My companion and I had the two ribeye meal, and with drinks, sides and tip we were out of there for $80. (And, unlike some steak houses I've been to recently, they know what 'Medium' means) All told, it was better than I expected, and I'll definitely be spending some quality time there in the future. read more

This is my second visit to AA for a beer and great steak. It was recommended to me last year by a local who said they had the best steaks in town. So, initial impression from the street was dive bar, why would thy have good food? Once inside, the place was busy, clean and menus were chalkboards with all the menu items. My family and I decided to go here for lunch after hearing how good the food is.We did not know this was strictly a 21 and over establishment (as there is NO sign on the front door stating so). We thought it was a restaurant/bar (like Shamus) not a bar/restaurant. The bartender (a brunette woman with glasses) who came over to take our order promptly asked if our entire party was 21 & older in which we said no (one of us was not). Instead of politely telling us their policy & asking us to leave, the bartender took it upon herself to broadcast to the entire establishment (which was full at the time) that this is a "BAR!". Her tone made it seem as if we were a bunch of idiots. She was extremely rude, condescending and unprofessional. I will not support this business in future. read more

So I was randomly in town and was looking for the best steak in town and AA seemed to be it according to the yelp app. The outside seemed really sketchy. The reviewer who mentions that there seems to be an abundance of meth heads was not kidding. I parked down the street and I had to walk past a liquor store with some very influenced people standing outside. I tried to take the long way past a belligerent woman who was screaming and flailing about, but ended up having to duck into the store for a few minutes until she went away. The restaurant looks like a bar with a few tables. There's a chalkboard up with prices and the like. I did not enjoy the soup or the onion rings. I was afraid that the steak was going to be horrible after those first few tastes of food, but fortunately the steak delivered. The porterhouse is huge (a new york and a filet mignon in one!), and comes with a side of cottage cheese. They got the sear right and the middle rare. Very scrumptious! I would have liked to try the ribeye as well. I don't know when I'll pass through again, but it's worth another shot for the steak. read more

Our drinks where very reasonable. I got more food than I could eat but it was so good I wanted to keep eating! I will deff. come back again! Really great food! Right now we order take out and especially like the Porterhouse Pork Chops. They are so juicy, cooked just right, not dried out. With the chops is a salad, fires, or onion rings, or a combo. Applesauce, cottage cheese and all the sauces to go! They really have it all covered to go! While picking it up I noticed the bar was near full and a few tables had diners as well! All within the guidelines with in-door seating, of course! We like to order take out and eat by the bay. So I can't tell you about the drinks and drive out of there across from the courthouse / sheriff's office! Maybe when it warms up we will try the outdoor seating. Great place! read more

This is a bar... that serves bar food. It was crazy busy with obvious locals when I arrived. I got the only barstool left at the bar (there are probably 30 - 40 barstools total). I ordered an 8oz. Filet Mignon with a side salad and onion rings. The onion rings were definitely off the chart good. The side salad was iceberg lettuce with one cherry tomato. I asked for the bleu cheese dressing "on the side" because I despise when a salad is served with copious amounts of dressing drowning the actual salad. I saw the server write it down on the ticket "on the side" but my salad arrived with copious amounts of dressing ladled all over the lettuce, tomato, croutons, etc. The Filet Mignon was generous, I'm pretty sure it was more than 8 oz which is fine... cooked how I like it (Med Rare) but lacked flavor. I mean for the price, I guess it was fine. I would prefer some charing or maybe a little marinade... I don't know... just nothing entirely special about it. My glass of Rodney Strong Cabernet Sauvignon was a proper pour, however, I believe the bottle was probably opened for a while and not properly stored because I've had this particular wine before, and it was flat and probably oxidized. The good news is, when I got the check, the bartender didn't charge me for the wine. I never said anything to her about my dissatisfaction, it was almost as if she new the bottle was dusty and the wine was spent. I'm not saying don't go here, I'm just saying, it's mediocre. Kind of a classic, Eureka experience. I'm pretty sure it was all locals... or maybe truckers passing through because it is right on the main Hwy 101 passing through town. read more

I just recently checked my bank statement and saw that they took extra tip from me. I remember my total plus tip was $67 and I happen to see that my bank statement says $77. So I know they added an extra $10. Also the food was not worth $20! It was microwavable food & portions were small!! I can't believe they did this. I understand covid made business hard but don't change the tip on someone's bill just because you are having a hard time. I wouldn't recommend this place at all quality of food was not good and the integrity was not there at all. Old school horseshoe shaped bar, older clientele, attached to a motel on the 101 across from the jail. This bar is awesome. They serve some decent food, too! The drinks are strong, and the bartenders are good at their jobs. You won't find any fancy mixed drinks here in the way of "mixology" or the like, but you'll find your basics well represented, with a few beers on tap too. Two "regulars" came in, sat at the bar well after we ordered. BOTH got their food well before ours showed up. In fact one finished his food before ours showed up. Asked twice for iced tea refill, never happened. Over easy eggs on both our plates arrived with broken yolks cooked hard. Be nice if the bartender/server had spared just a minute or two from her BS session with the bar regulars to do the bare minimum for our table. Basically non-regulars have a cloaking device on as far as the server was concerned. Seems like great place to get hammered on a Saturday morning. Here are the best steaks in Humboldt County. Chargrilled to perfection would be an understatement. I always order the Porterhouse steak and am never dissatisfied. Many places can grill a steak rare as I like it, but this is one of the only which can chargrill it to a carbonized marvelous piece of meat. It's as they had walked a steer through a forest fire, gorgeous and black on the outside and juicy and red on the interior. Waitstaff professional and prompt. Drinks reasonably priced and STRONG!
